Have to admit that I didn't have a great experience my first time. I think it was the Caesar salad's extremely rich and salty anchovies that ran right through me (tmi!) I remember the New Haven and cobble hill pies were pretty decent, but something ultimately didn't sit right after that meal. I had wanted to give them another shot since I heard such great things and saw that it made the NYTimes list (!) so over a year later I finally returned. Loved this place! It is small and was quite crowded when we went on a Saturday but it was worth the wait. We tried a couple of different pizzas and the Cesar salad. I really enjoyed the pizza with vodka sauce, and I appreciated them having an option for 100% beef pepperoni as that's hard to find and my friend has a pork allergy. They're not joking when they tell you to line up before their opening time: we got here on a Saturday at 5:03p (they open at 5p) and there were just a handful of seats at the bar left. Within 15 minutes, there was already a line outside the door. The place is TINY. We got a Sunset Park and a Ditmas Park. They have two sizes to choose from, so it's perfect for any sized group. The pizza is very crunchy all throughout, with the crust slightly burned, and it's very filling. Plan on under ordering, or you'll have to bring some home. I don't find it to be life changing, but I guess people love this place. For me it was just an average pizza. read more

The setup at Wheated is the classic neighborhood spot--bar up front, tables in back, open kitchen so you can watch your pizza go into the oven. It's cozy without trying too hard, and the vibe is welcoming whether you're here for a quick slice or settling in with drinks. Wheated nails the thing that matters most: the crust. They make it with sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast. There's this tanginess and depth you don't get elsewhere, plus it's got the perfect crispy-yet-chewy texture that holds up all the way through. All the pizzas are named after Brooklyn neighborhoods. That doesn't really tell you what's on them, but that's part of the fun. The Brighton Beach is my perhaps my favorite: bacon, garlic, black pepper, mozzarella. It's essentially carbonara pizza and it works perfectly. The bacon gets crispy, the pepper cuts through, and that sourdough crust ties it all together. The Bay Ridge vodka pie is dangerously good--creamy, rich, the kind of thing you'll randomly crave a week later. If you want a fully loaded pizza, the Supreme has everything: sausage, mushrooms, onions, olives, pepperoni. There are also some interesting combinations like the Red Hook (white pie with mortadella, potato, thyme, pistachios) and the Coney Island 2.0 (pineapple and chorizo instead of the usual Hawaiian). I think pineapple on a pizza is a crime against humanity, but maybe worth trying if you like Hawaiian pizza and you're feeling adventurous. They also do solid meatballs, a good Caesar salad, and the cocktails are affordable with a solid bourbon selection. Weekend brunch adds bagels, biscuits, and sausage gravy to the mix. Bottom line: this is the kind of place that adds minimal value to your neighborhood. That sourdough crust alone makes it worth going out of your way for. read more

I've turned this place into my regular Saturday night stop. 2 of the best mixologists/bartender/ therapist in the city work at this smaller bar. Yes there's table seating. But I'm a bar person. We got the vinegar hill pizza with bacon added and it was absolutely phenomenal--every bite was delicious and the crust was honestly chef's kiss! The meatballs with ricotta were also delicious and a really generous serving with fresh cheese shredded ontop! The service was great and very fast--5 stars there without a doubt. The drinks were where we lost a star here honestly--great ingredients and I wanted to love them but the cocktails were just a little on the sweeter side for my liking. If you like sweet though? I visited this establishment to place a takeout order. I ordered the Canarsie Pizza and while I waited I ordered a drink. The drink I ordered was called Horses Neck. It was very good and had the right amount of alcohol. The waiter was very nice. He offered me water while I waited for my pizza. The restaurant was very busy. It wasn't very noisy just crowded. All of the employees were very attentive. Once I received my order I paid and left. The pizza was really delicious. I'll definitely come back and dine in. Came here on a late Friday night with a friend. Was in the mood for Italian/pizza and found this spot via Yelp. Read the reviews and checked out the pics and wanted to give this spot a chance. Was seated promptly at the bar. I started with a Hatch Mezcal cup ($14) which was a solid cocktail. Ended up ordering the supreme pizza ($31). This was really good and very filling. I first tried coming here after work on a Friday; they were closed. I then tried coming here midday on a Saturday; they were closed. I lastly tried coming here on a late Sunday afternoon; they were open. Talk about confusing business hours. However crazy the business hours are, it is not so crazy to get here, as it is a 5-10 minute walk off the Church Ave station on the B/Q. Pretty straightforward there. But you did not come here to see me ramble about crazy store hours and subway jargon, you came to read about the food! I ordered two things, the meatball appetizer and the Bensonhurst pizza pie (sorry folks, no slices here, only whole pies). The meatballs are a trio of softball sized roundies smothered and covered in a marinara sauce and a blend of ricotta and parmigiana reggiano cheeses. They are soft, with a char all over the outside. I guess this works more as a meat sauce appetizer then a meatball appetizer. My server, Craig, suggested I keep the remainder of my dish to dip the crust in. Great idea Craig! Except someone else took the dish to create more room on my table. More on Craig later. In what seemed like an eternity later, my pizza arrived. It looks sharp, with all the tastings and makings that say, this is a Margherita pizza. The pizza tastes good, but the crust, made with a sourdough starter (I had to ask, though I pretty much figured it out), really is the star here. Most pizzerias I have been to make their sauce or their cheese the feature presentation. For once, it is nice to see someone choose to make their crust take the lead. It delivers a solid performance. After a while, the density of the crust gets too much, which is why I could not finish the whole pie. Before going in, my plan was to try to leave at least two slices behind. Unlike me, a pizza slice should not be left alone. Now, back to Craig. He is a super server. Genuine, engaging, colorful, and intelligent. I really liked talking to him. This is a guy who knows his pizza. I guess he knew I did too, but maybe that is because I was wearing my pizza shirt to the restaurant. Like the pizza, he too delivers a solid performance. You could taste the high end ingredients and I could see why they make bagels out of the same type of dough. The service was top notch and the rose on the menu was really really good. There were so many delicious looking pies all around me that I'll have to keep coming back and make my way down the menu. Despite spending many weekends of the last decade in the Ditmas Park/Flatbush area, I didn't visit this long standing ode to pizza in the neighborhood until recently. I always kept this spot in my back pocket, noting how they adorably name each pie after a Brooklyn neighborhood (shout out to Bensonhurst!) and have an extensive whiskey list. After many years, the night came when I needed to pull out a back pocket restaurant, and we were lucky enough to be met with barely a wait on a recent Thursday night during primetime dinner hours. Even though they tout one of the largest whiskey lists in the city (according to them, I have not substantiated this), they don't point this out anywhere on their menu or at their restaurant. Once upon a time they bragged about this large whiskey collection on their website and I even confirmed with our server this was the case to make sure I was remembering correctly. I know Wheated is now wading into the bagel making business and so I'm guessing they are rebranding away from being whiskey aficionados and more toward being dough aficionados. This makes sense-- the dough is great. I recently sampled some of their bagels at BagelFest and loved the addition of furikake on theirs. Each pie at Wheated is pretty sizeable and large enough to feed two diners, maybe with an appetizer. Unfortunately this means the menu doesn't favor those who like variety, because you don't have the option of dividing your pizza into two halves with different toppings, so we went all in on one flavor-- the Flatbush. My dining companion is a meat eater, and I am not-- I could tell they would've liked one of the pies with meat, but we weren't in a position to take home leftovers and could only stomach a single pie. I thought the pizza was great, though after a couple of slices I would have liked a little more variety on my plate. I did get to try some excellent wine and one of their many whiskeys though. If you're unlike me and don't mind a dinner of just pizza, Wheated is a cozy little neighborhood spot that has a lot of fans for good reason. read more
