The pork belly bao was cooked just right, it was very tender. I added a bit more hoisin than what was already on it. It's the normal size of a bao that you'd find elsewhere. The turmeric fish rice box was enough for 1.5 or 2 meals. Generous portion each of fish, garlic rice, roasted veggies, and fresh pickled veggies. The fish had a nice kick to it, very flavorful, balanced well with the rice. Pickled veggies were fresh and refreshing, a good palette cleanser. I liked that it was not overly vinegar-y. Roasted veggies could use one less dash of salt and maybe 3 minutes less being cooked, but otherwise it was good. It had carrots, broccoli, zucchini, and beets. I don't really care for beets but it worked well in this dish. The golden milk tea was ok, not terribly sweet, which I liked. It's not as yellow as the others I've seen. All of that came out to about $18. The only other patrons was a couple that wasn't eating so my food came out in about 5 minutes. Had lunch here yesterday with a friend. The food was outstanding and very affordable. The server was kind and offered to give me extra veggies with my rice box because the pickled veggies were a bit spicy and I can't handle spice. However he was unable to answer our questions about wether the teas had caffeine and give descriptions of some of the other menu items. It would be helpful to have a printed menu with descriptions so it's more clear what is in each item. Those are the reasons I only gave it 4 stars. Well, we've gotten the turmeric fish rice box about 25 times. It was always great until the last few weeks. It comes with a pickled veggie salad, roasted veggies, a nice sized portion of delicious fish, and savory delicious rice. We live in the neighborhood so we were getting take out from there pretty frequently. It was great having a convenient option. However, the last few weeks the roasted veggies have changed from the variety they once were, too mostly zucchini and yellow squash. It used to have roasted beets and delicious cauliflower and a few other various veggies. The pickled veggie salad has been full of way too many jalapenos in my last few orders, and the jalapenos are not pickled enough so they aren't really edible, at least for me, with that much heat. Holy cow! Er, duck confit. What a little gem, right here in north central! We stopped in for lunch today and enjoyed the duck banh mi and the lemongrass beef rice bowl. Both were flavorful and reasonably priced. The banh mi bread was to die for (crispy and shattery, without being hard) and the seasoning the in the rice made the rice bowl aromatic and delicious. Wow. The menu is fairly simple, as is the interior of the restaurant. Over the course of two visits I had delicious lemongrass beef banh mi and the rib rice plate. The rib rice plate is likely the best tasting food for the money in Austin. Four perfectly spiced and tender pork ribs are served over flavored rice. The hot medley of oven roasted vegetables (Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, carrots, beets, squash) was a perfect, especially when paired with the cold side of slightly vinegared cabbage/radish/green onion/cucumber. As to price .... and this is a note to YELP ... having to rank Heo with two $$ (meal and a drink) seems a little insane. Having a numerical spread for $$ of $11 to $30 seems a little deceiving. We went here on a Friday around 7pm. No line! We ordered a Pork Belly Bao (really good!) and one of the specials, a Rice Rib Plate. The rice and ribs on it were really good, definitely well-flavored, and seemed authentic. There was a good amount of ginger and sweet teriyaki bbq in the meat and rice. I wish it was a bit spicier. Just finished my meal here and am already planning my next visit.. and may or may not know exactly what I'm ordering when I go. The menu is limited, but it doesn't even matter. The rice boxes are amazing and a really good portion size. I was very hungry at dinner time and ate the whole thing, feeling nice and full after. I was with two other friends so we each tried one of the rice boxes. Of the three, the beef was my favorite. The chicken one is a drumstick, which I didn't realize before ordering it.. but I still loved it! Also I was unsure if they had pho or not, because I didn't see it on the menu online, but had seen it on Yelp. A very simple menu - four different proteins served three or four different ways. They do pho, sticky buns, rice boxes and banh mi (sandwiches). We had the tumeric fish and pork rib rice boxes. Both came with super tasty roasted vegetables (I hate cooked carrots, but somehow theirs were delicious) and a pickled cabbage salad (very refreshing). Both were excellent - the pork ribs were tender and delicious, and the fish was delicately spiced. The garlic dill rice was superb. Portions are good, and while not seemingly spicy, we had a pleasant mouth glow going on after the meal. The decor is so -so, except for an amazing wood feature wall that made the space. We were going to eat at Titaya's down the street, but since they were closed, we tried this spot. We ended up having an excellent meal for about half (or less) than we would have spent otherwise. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful - also pretty funny. Highly recommended. Will be our go-to spot in this part of town. We made our first visit to Heo Eatery tonight, but it definitely will not be our last. We loved it! It's a little hard to see going south on Lamar because of the neighbor's bushes. But worth circling back if you miss it. There is additional parking in the back if the parking spots in front are full. As to the food. I had the pork belly bang mi and loved it. The French bread was fresh with a nice crunch to it. The pork belly had a subtle sweetness to it that paired nicely with the pickled veggies. Even the tater tot side was tasty, and I usually don't like tots. My husband had the Beef Bao (sliders) that he really liked. The staff was very friendly and helpful explaining the dishes. We stopped by Heo eatery on our way to a movie one night just hoping for a quick bite to eat. We were surprised and impressed by our experience! The place was decorated with good taste and very orderly and clean. We got the beef bon mi and the curry pho special along with some sides, and the food was all amazing.
