This review is for the $8 personal size margherita pizza lunch special. From the texture and blandness of the crust I might guess they have a supply of refrigerated pizza dough from a can in their kitchen. Also, the sauce looked and tasted like it was simply crushed tomatoes straight out of a can. There was probably 50 cents worth of cheese and a nickels worth of basil. All in all pretty tasteless. Thankfully they had oregano and hot pepper flakes available in the shakers.The quality was just not there. Maybe their full size $14 margherita is different, but I'll never know. I won't be going back. There was no service, order at the counter and retrieve it when they call your number. I'll be going to the pizza shop at the main place mall for a delicious slice for $3.75. read more

I went there for dinner before going to Shea's. We where lucky to get a table because it was booked. Note: make a reservation before a hockey game & Shea's. I shared a margarita pizza and three hot stuffed peppers. I thought the pizza was ok. I had a taste of the hot peppers and let me say I needed a gallon of water afterwards. We couldn't finish the peppers & we explained why to the waitress. We had to try and get the waitress attention several times just to bring us water and our bill. Saturday reservation for 4 at 5:30 pm. Waited 10 minutes for a hostess to arrive to seat us. Waitress arrived at our table 15 minutes later. No hummus tonight, she said, and then added that they were also out of any dish requiring chicken. My wife found a wine on the menu she liked, but they were out of that too. We did have wings for an appetizer, but they were off-putting - a spicy first bite that was followed by nothing but the taste of not quite fresh meat. The large meatball app was the best thing we tried. Three of us had three different pizzas - all delicious, all slightly greasy. We won't return. read more

This was my second time having dinner there in less than a week. The prices are very reasonable for the very high quality of food and service you're getting. The food was made in front of our eyes, from making the dough to baking the pizza to even mixing the salads or preparing the appetizers. I will definitely go back there. P.S. This place is two blocks from my apartment and we just LOVE it. I finally tried a pizza other than breakfast or menooshi and the meatball pizza was fabulous. Also, I don't know what they are doing to that hummus but it is so creamy and delicious! My friends 2 year old loved it as well. Honestly the worst service in Buffalo, that I have had in a long time. I Was really looking forward to coming here. We had an 8pm show on Saturday and made a reservation for 6:45. We arrived 15 minutes early and expected to order a drink at the bar prior to our seating. We proceeded to check in with the hostess she informed us that she would let us know when our table was ready. My wife an I both ordered a simple Cocktail and end up with a glass over flowing with Ice and half full with Mixer. I'm not sure there was any whiskey in my Manhattan at all. My wife and I continue our conversation and notice that it is now 7:10 and there are open tables around the restaurant with a new crowd coming in. We ask the hostess if our table will be ready soon. She lets us know that she will check and get back to us. Another waitress came to seat us at 7:25. She was very kind, but also seemed overwhelmed. We shared a pizza and stuffed peppers - food came out at 7:45 and was good, but we were certainly rushed. We asked for the check right away as to not going risk missing the show at shea's 710. The waitress again was kind and brought the check and then apologized for cashing me out before she asked if I would like another glass of wine. Super swanky, light, and bright. This place is a great addition to the theater district! Two of us shared an early dinner before a show and Shea's and left happy and satisfied, and saying that we'll have to be back. The staff is super friendly.... and the menu is great: a morning menu of French press coffee beverages (those I think are served all day), pastries, breakfast sandwiches, yogurt and fruit..... and a lunch/dinner menu of hearth baked pizzas, salads, and sandwiches. There's also a wonderful cocktail menu, as well as a great wine and beer list. The two of us each had a salad: Arugula Salad for her (arugula, goat cheese, walnuts, and strawberries topped with balsamic vinegar and olive oil).... and the H+P House Salad for me (mixed greens, scallions, tomatoes, parmasiano-reggiano, and balsamic vinaigrette) for me. Both salads were of a nice size and the ingredients were fresh. My friend said hers was a bit on the "too tart" side.... and mine had a bit too few scallions (like 2-3 tiny slivers) and a bit too much cheese. I love cheese, but with this type a little goes a long way.... it was a bit over-powering. We then shared the Margherita Pizza (San Marzano sauce, fresh mozzarella, basil, and extra virgin olive oil). It was the perfect size for two to share after salads or appetizers and was absolutely delicious! Slightly charred crust, slightly acidic sauce, mild and creamy cheese, and fresh basil slivers to add a bit of depth.... it was reminiscent of the pizzas I enjoyed in Italy. Desserts are made in house.... and there were two to choose from on the evening we were there: Baklava and Amaretto Cake. My friend had the former which she said was delicious.... and I had the later which was dense and sweet and flavorful. It was served on a plate drizzled with thickened simple syrup (which should have been omitted as it made the bottom of the cake a bit soggy, and was cloyingly sweet) and a next to a dollop of real (!!!) whipped cream. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't great. It was solidly average. I got a margherita pizza and gnocchi with pesto. The tomato sauce was kinda sour but the crust was good. The gnocchi was okay. Such a disappointment! I would definitely not recommend this establishment after my experience last night! I know it was a Shea's night but there is no excuse for waiting 20 minutes before your server even acknowledges you, 40 minutes before you receive a glass of wine and then get a pizza that is not even warm all the way through! I know restaurants are having a difficult time getting help, so then you don't book your restaurant to full capacity! A hidden gem in the Theatre District, you need to do yourself a favor and swing by for lunch or dinner. They have a fantastic roast beef sandwich...but more importantly, their Margherita Pizza is OFF THE CHARTS fantastic!!! Light, power packed with flavor and perfectly proportioned sauce (sweeter side which I love), thin crust and fresh mozzarella cheese. This place could and should be amazing, but it's not there yet and I'm not sure it knows what it wants to be because I certainly couldn't figure it out. It's in a great location downtown and is huge, I mean walking in you get that wow feel because it's super modern yet still has that rustic cozy coffee shop vibe....but wait is it a coffee shop? So, we came in around 10 am on a Saturday morning because we had heard great things about their breakfast. I thought the place was going to be hopping' but we were the only two in the joint so we went up to the counter to see what the place was all about, ready to get some coffee and food. I asked what kind of coffee they had, only because there were no menus or boards indicating what they were offering. I asked if they had any flavored coffees and I should have specified what I meant by that because the girl's response was, "I think we can put some pumpkin spice in to make it pumpkin coffee." Then, I clarified asking if they had any flavored beans and she said no so I went with a regular coffee. (The only kind they offered.) I asked what kind of milk they had and was told, "We only have 2% right now." Oh come on. You're a trendy cafe downtown and you only have 2%? So I took the coffee black and asked about breakfast. The girl was very hesitant about her responses and said, "We could do some eggs on a panini." That was it. I looked at my breakfast buddy with a confused face. What was this place? I knew they had pizzas, but it was 10 am on a Saturday so I thought maybe they would have something other than pastries and eggs on a panini. Then the girl said, "Oh actually I think we can do pancakes." Then my friend asked if they had any breakfast pizzas, to which the girl responded apprehensively, "Yes but we can't do those now because our pizza guy isn't here yet." The whole conversation was awkward and strange and so we both went with two black coffees and had a seat at the bar area. The coffee was no doubt, awesome, bold, fresh, delicious. The interior of this place is amazing, I loved the tables, the large windows allowing for a great view out onto Main Street, the wooden barrel tables, the color of the walls, everything. Which is why it was so frustrating to have such a mediocre at best experience with the food because this place could and should be THE place to go. The girl, which I should clarify was sweet and polite, just seemed confused about what they were offering. She did say they had only been open a month, but it didn't seem like they should be open for breakfast if the only food they had were pizzas and if their breakfast pizza man wasn't in yet at 10 am on a Saturday when they open at 8. I'm so happy there's another awesome addition to downtown! I stopped in here right in the middle of the theater rush, but we were able to get a table. The service was really good, but they were busy and there was only the world's nicest hostess and one server handling all of the tables. Still, though, we didn't wait long at all. We weren't sure how fill we would be so we decided to try two pizzas: the margherita and meatball. The meatball was by far the show stealer, bit the margherita was no slouch either. I really like the sauce they us--it's not too sweet but not bitter at all. It really reminded me of pizza in Italy. On a hungrier day, the two of us could've easily polished off two pizzas bit we ended up taking five slices home. We also got the house salad, which at $8 was a bargain. We didn't try and cocktails or coffee, but I would love to return to try both. read more

I enjoyed dinner here last night. Unfortunately they did not have enough staff that night and they only had seating at the bar. There were only two of us, so it was pretty comfortable at the bar. Seeing the brick oven, we decided that we pretty much had to order a pizza. They have a section for red pizzas and a section for white pieces. We decided to order one of each and split them. We ordered the Buffalo Pie and the Pesto Chicken. Both were very good in different ways. The Buffalo pie was spicy, burned my mouth, but good. While the pesto chicken pizza was fresh and almost tasted like a salad on pizza dough. They explained that they use flour that's finely ground; an Italian grade flour and you can definitely tell, the crust was fantastic. I really enjoyed the meal and would like to go back and try some of the different varieties or maybe even something besides pizza. My friend ordered a cocktail that included Saint-Germain which she enjoyed. The staff were friendly. We probably each ate about 4 slices and there were still about four slices left over. read more

Toyed with three stars because H+P is probably/will be much better than what we experienced Friday night. To summarize: mediocre, expensive pizza in a mostly appealing space with an overworked/undertrained staff. Read on for the details. It's a really great space oriented around a beautiful pizza oven. You can walk in and get slices, sit at the bar, or be waited on at a table. One thing, though. Inexplicably, there are not enough tables. Huge portions of this restaurant with like two four-seat tables. Really weird. We ended up siting at the bar because there were no available tables, but also because we didn't want to feel like we were in the middle of nowhere. Also inexplicably, even though it was a busy Friday there was only one bartender taking care of the 20 or so seated at the bar. (I felt terrible for this guy. For example, the restaurant clearly doesn't own enough wine glasses, so he had to hand wash one every time someone ordered wine.) It took a long time to get his attention. Actually we never really did. A waiter that seemed to grasp that the bartender was sinking came over and grabbed our drink orders. This waiter--Matt or Mark, thank god for him. We ordered two pizzas, meatball and margherita. We got them super fast! (But only because the kitchen screwed up and gave us someone else's pizza. Turns out that these were the last pizzas in the place so we ended up feeling bad for the people whose pizza we were inadvertently served.) If you're hungry, I'd recommend one per person. But the pizzas--like the restaurant itself--look beautiful. Nicely charred on the bottom, very thin with bubbly cheese on top. Thing is. They weren't good. Though thin and charred, the pizza was strangely soft and soggy. I loved the meatballs on the meatball pizza, but pizza like this is about texture, and the texture was not good. I suspect they are using too much cheese or too much sauce or maybe something is up with the dough. I want to go back because I think they're going to work things out and because Buffalo doesn't really have another place line this. But to be honest, it's gonna be hard to convince my wife. Starting with the good - the staff was nice, the ingredients were fresh, the space was trendy and clean. Came in Thursday night, around 730 - there was 1 table sitting down and a group eating at the bar, it was not busy so I'm not sure where the wheels fell off. Started by ordering tea - it came in a to go cup, even though I was staying there to eat. A mug would have been a nice touch. Salad - ordered the H+P House Salad. Fresh ingredients, perfect amount of dressing. However, the tomato's weren't cut properly and there were parts of the green/yellow core in them - maybe that's the fancy way to eat tomato's, I apologize if I'm mistaken but usually the core is remove. Serving - I was eating alone, was brought tongs & a side dish for the salad. Probably to mix it, or share, or portion it? Not entirely sure. Ate straight from the bowl as it was not that large of a salad, I'm sure it could be split though. When my pizza came, they tried to take away the tongs and side dish - I guess the pizza was meant to be eaten from the serving tray and finished in one sitting but not the salad (full disclosure, I ate everything). Pizza came out, and I guess they're currently struggling how to cook it. The crust was soft, almost a pita consistency - they tried, so hard, to get a crispy crust - even going so far as to hold the pizza over the open flame, but it came out soft and mushy. Ordered the Pesto Pizza - the toppings were just alright - the pesto and sauce are very mild, lack substance and layered flavors. Also, they open daily at 8a for breakfast - which does not make sense to me as many people need to be to work by 830a. Had the coffee here in a past visit and it was good stuff - I'd grab a cup on my way to work if they were open earlier, 8a doesn't leave me enough time. I'll try it again, in a few months, and update my review. This is probably just because they're a newer restaurant. read more

I came here for lunch on a Saturday. There were only a couple of tables seated, not a busy time in this area. We were seated immediately. Our server was super friendly, and offered suggestions right away. It wasn't an act, he clearly loves working here. The food is all cooked in a wood/gas fired pizza oven. I had the Buffalo Pie. It was cooked perfectly, and had lots of toppings. The crust was tasty, the banana peppers added a nice little spice. The meatballs on top were tender, I just wish they had a little more flavour. Working in close proximity, I have awaited the opening of H+P for a few months now. I have to say I am pleased with the final result. The menu is small, but it seems to have a decent variety for different tastes. It consists of a half dozen pizzas, salads, sandwiches, and a few apps. I tried the prosciutto pizza. It was great! The arugula that topped it off was perfect. I couldn't seem to get onto the webite(?) and the phone number is not on their menu (716-262-0866), but I was able to obtain it and they do offer takeout. They also have a selection of coffees, pastries, and offer breakfast sandwiches. Staff was friendly and polite. I love new places and supporting small businesses, a friend told me about this place; super cute, great croissants; so we went today to get some school stuff done over some coffee. Walked in, super cute vibe. Nice guy taking orders. First strike: no croissants. They're still on the menu but "they're working on the dough and not providing them currently." Alright. We order 2 coffees and a gluten free banana Nutella pizza, less than $20 all together. Which was nice. But then.. Strike 2: They do NOT have wifi. What cafe or coffee shop doesn't have wifi? I couldn't even get half the stuff done I needed to because it was online. But what's worse, I asked and they told me to connect to time warner cables wifi, it'll give you two hours free. Ok. Doesn't even work, it's too limited. They say well try this other Buffalo wifi. Also doesn't work. They have a wifi listed under them so I asked can't I just use yours, why can't you just give the password? The man said "well that's just for security purposes so no I can't. I don't know why other wifis don't work for you, my laptop is connected just fine." I try really hard not to write rude reviews as I love small businesses and the unique places the Buffalo. But this was a little much. Good lunch stop or to just sit down to talk with a friend over coffee. But you most certainly can't use your laptop. Very pleased! Came here on a Saturday night around 5:30 before an event on Main Street with 4 other people. The place was far from packed. We received excellent and prompt service. We split 3 of the wood fired pizzas- the vegetarian, margarita, and 4 cheese. All of these were delicious! I especially liked the 4 cheese and margarita and found the vegetarian to be slightly dry (lots of veggies but no sauce) but 2 other members of my party ranked it the highest. We didn't order anything else off the menu, but it looked very good. I'm excited to come back for breakfast and/or lunch, as they had pastries that looked amazing. What a terrific dinner last night...Let me say that Johnny, who greeted us the door was an added delight to the mix. He was extremely friendly and accommodating and we had a terrific pizza and salad. Our server Lauren was so kind and made sure that our order was brought in enough time for us to enjoy the meal and have time for a wonderful dessert of rice pudding. Even though it was theatre night at Shea's and a concert was on at Town Ballroom, the service was wonderful, the staff was gracious and accommodating and the food was DELICIOUS....we will see you for dinner before the next show.....check this restaurant out.....you will not be disappointed read more

This is probably the worst pizza I have had. The dough is bland, the sauce isn't very good, and the chicken we added was boiled. There was no seasoning. I was visiting family in Buffalo recently and just so happened to be there for the opening for H&P. I ate breakfast and lunch there on more than one occasion ! Breakfast- the croissants are incredibly delicious and the coffee was perfect. The only thing that upset me was the fact I couldn't purchase beans to take back home with me! Lunch- I tried the meatball pizza and the four cheese, they were truly the best tasting pizzas I've ever had! The hearth oven cooks them perfectly, I was so impressed! Their salads are really fresh and perfectly dressed with olive oil and balsamic. A favorite of mine which you should def try if you go is the roast beef sandwich! All of their bread is baked in fresh every morning for their sandwiches! For dessert I would 100% try the brownies and they have these long cookies with sesame on them (can't remember the name) which are amazing! read more

I came in on Saturday afternoon with my brother and friend. We split the meatball, roast beef sandwich, and whiskey press. All were fantastic! The baguettes for the sandwiches were made fresh to order and I honestly haven't had anything like it in this city. So good! Very friendly staff who explained all food is made in house with clean ingredients and they take pride in the quality (which they should). It is great to see this section of Main Street experiencing a renaisaance. I work downtown and this area has become a hotspot for lunch/happy hour. We are visitors from the Bay Area (SF). It was our first visit to Buffalo. We were walking at downtown and chanced upon H+P. It looked cozy so we decided to go inside and have lunch. Our group ordered pesto chicken pizza, margherita pizza, and chicken souvlaki salad. The pizzas' crust is really Mediterranean. Like the one you would find in Italy- light, a little charred, just perfect to our liking. The toppings are fresh. Just enough sauce, and cheese. My son (13) finished his margherita pizza easily. Same with the pesto chicken pizza, it was very good. Then came the SALAD- it was the best chicken souvlaki I have ever had (so far). It was no denying fresh and authentic. The greens are so fresh and flavorful, and the addition of creamy goat cheese made the salad from good to great. The food at H + P is equally good from what you can find in San Francisco, which is a culinary destination. Buffalo is so lucky to have a good Mediterranean restaurant like H+P in the neighborhood. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for awhile now, and what better time to go than before a play at Shea's ... Since it is literally across the street! We gave up our table and elected to sit at the bar and eat. The bartender was super friendly and gave us some good recommendations on the menu. We opted for the meatballs, an arugula and parmesan salad, and a pizza with meatball, pepperoni and stuffed banana peppers. I brought my parents in for lunch on Sunday 2/27- during the veritable tornado- and we enjoyed an excellent prosciutto pizza and goat cheese salad. The food was perfect and we finished in plenty of time to make our show. The waitress was kind enough to show us a much safer way back to Shea's (she saw us struggle to get in) and we went on our way. Sitting at the airport on my way back to Boston, I realized in all the excitement, I had left my credit card at the restaurant. I called and could only hope that they would be kind enough to cover me and... they did! In all the restaurants I've visited in my life this is the worst I have experienced, ever. Went downtown to see a show and picked this nightmare by chance. We were seated promptly but it was over a half hour before we seen any wait staff. By this time it was too late to leave so we decided to stick it out. After another 20 minutes we received out sandwich order. All I can say is pitiful. As time was running thin I asked the waitress for my check as soon as possible. When she did not return we decided to leave the amount we thought we owed and left. I had never done this before but time was up. Poor quality food in Buffalo spells sudden doom. Walking down main street not able to decide where to eat lunch, tow of us decided on Hearth + Press based on nothing more than the sign. It's European Cafe located in the theater district of the downtown. The interior, the decor, the presentation, the service, the food, the ambiance...it's the total package. Food was delicious. Nice selection off the menu. We ordered a salad and a pizza for the main course. The arugula salad was plentiful topped with goat cheese walnut and apple - so refreshing. The pizza is done in a Stone Hearth oven. If you are a thin crust affectionado, it is really just straight up impressive. Thin crispy crust, perfectly distributed toppings, slather of sauce, perfect amount of fresh basil - delicious. They earned every single star out of five! read more

Their location is ideal. We ordered pickup and it was super easy and reasonably priced for a foodie-pizza. I was so excited to try their Neapolitan-style pizza. Sauce was excellent. Cheese and toppings were very, very good. The weak link by a significant margin is the crust. If I were the owner, I'd make an investment in a different dough supplier. It tasted like a cracker. Weird right? Very disappointing. I couldn't help but feel like this restaurant could be SO good with a different dough for the pizza. The sandwiches were bigger than expected! They were also cut in half so it was very convenient to give each other a half of our sandwich so we could try both.
