The staff are very friendly and attentive if you need anything. The food comes out hot and delicious. My husband and I are new to the Phoenix area and were happy to find the new HMart that opened in Mesa. After shopping we were hungry and checked yelp to find a good restaurant nearby. We noted all the asian restaurants nearby and decided Chinese dumplings sounded like a great option for lunch. We read the reviews on Happy Bao which is tucked into the interesting Mekong Plaza. We were lucky to get a table in the delightful small space. The restaurant is clean and the decorations are great! We enjoyed soup dumplings - they were delicious and better than our go to Din Tai Fung in Seattle. They were hot and fresh and perfect. We also had the Dan Dan Noodles which were perfectly prepared and seasoned. Spice was perfect and we loved the small noodle which we learned were egg noodles made at the restaurant. We had a fabulous lunch, we will be back as we saw many other items headed to tables that we want to try in the future. Staff were friendly and efficient as well. The food, good. The service, horrible. At the end, the waitress put the bill on the table. I reviewed it and handed her my card. When she came back I wrote in a total that would have been a 20% tip and then noticed the total was incorrect. When I asked why did the total change from $41 to $49 (thinking she added a 20% tip already or something) she said no she had put the wrong check on my table. So instead of checking with me before running my card for a different amount she just went and ran the card. So I left the total at $50 and left. 3 days later, I was charged $64 for the lunch! When I called they said they had my receipt with the total scratched out and a $15 tip written in with my signature on it! Of course they have my signature on it because I signed the receipt for a total of $50. read more

They make everything here completely from scratch. It took about fifteen minutes for our order of dumpling and bao, the perfect amount of time to explore the shop across from them. So we stopped by the other night on a crawl through a few new places here at Mekong Plaza and this weren't bad at all. That's a terrible thing to say, because actually Happy Bao's has (so far) the best xiaolongbao (小籠包, XLB, soup dumplings) in the area. The 蟹粉小籠包 were OK, could actually benefit from crab and not shrimp, but good, not quite as good as the pork ones. Anyway. And for all the snobs out there, we're never gonna get anywhere if we keep comparing ourselves to NYC or YVR or LAS or the 626. Support local business if you want better stuff. Ok I'm done, I'm done. Got takeout from here. Zha jiang noodle (black bean noodle): 5/5, haven't tried many (both chinese and korean versions) but this is my favorite one so far. Xiao long bao (pork soup dumplings) (5/5)- not the best I've had but I love XLB so I might be biased. Lu rou fan (braised pork rice) (4/5)- not very traditional lu rou fan, kinda more like braised pork with rice but still a very yummy dish. read more

An excellent choice when you're in the mood for a meal based on Asian starches. What they do well are bao, steamed dumplings, rice, noodles, and of course rice noodles. We went for selections from all sections of the menu & everything was top notch: Singapore curry noodle, Hong Kong fried rice, Pork and chive bao, and signature dumpling, with hot tea after. Food: 7.5; Value: 4; Service: 8 Food: I got the Xiao Long Bao and the Signature dumplings. I wanted try the DanDan noodles too, but I am allergic to the nuts and felt that it would damage the integrity of the dish if I asked for an order without the nuts. Overall, the food was pretty decent. The XLB has good flavor, but was a little light on the amount of the soup inside. I've had this elsewhere and it's typically full off hot savory soup that will explode in your mouth and give you that good feeling. This one, not so much. Signature dumplings were well seasoned. Both came out piping hot and the best part of both were the actual dough. The dough was sticky, stretchy with a snap. This is what I would want from a good dry dumpling and bao. Value: so here is the real issue. I understand that they need to price the items around how they have it now, but the portion size is much too small. After eating the XLB(8pc) and Signature Dumplings(10pc) I wasn't close to full. At that point, I had spent about $20 and I knew that to get closer to full, I would need to order another $10 worth of dumplings. After tip and tax, that would mean I would have needed to spend about $36-$37 for lunch. I wasn't expecting that and that's where I would say this place falls short. I could have supplemented my meal with a side of rice or noodles for a few extra dollars, but that's not how I like to eat my dumplings and Baos. The actual sizes of the dumplings and Baos were small. The Baos are a little bigger than a quarter in diameter, the dumplings about two inches in length. Quantity wise, it may seem like a lot, but weight wise, it was not. Service: the staff was friendly and patient with my questions (something that is not always a given at Chinese restaurants). They were attentive with refilling the waters at the table and were not visibly unhappy when we asked for separate checks. Overall, this bao was not happy, not sad, just a bit hungry. I would say this isn't a cost-efficient way to get your food happy for the day. Tips: this place is located deep within the Mekong plaza near their food court and dim sum restaurant. read more

Ive tried Happy Bao's twice now and everytime Ive been impressed with the food. The Lou Ru Fan is delicious with pork that melts in your mouth and the dim sum variety keeps your visit unique and interesting everytime. I ordered a shen jian bao, signature dumplings, and seafood wontons. I wasn't impressed with any dishes especially the seafood wontons - the filling was small and dry. They didn't use the traditional egg noodles but rather another type of noodles that took the broth and flavor away. Although the dish was quite big, I still was not impressed. I think I can make better wontons at home. Their dumplings and baos weren't impressive either. Maybe I don't have the acquired taste for Chinese dumplings. Either way, I tried and I wasn't impressed. I definitely recommend people to try for themselves though because other people might like it more. read more

Just here to echo the sentiments of other reviewers that the XLB here are so good and better than anything I've had at Din Tai Fung. They do a great job with take out for all their foods including soup dumplings. I just wish I lived closer so I could eat there every week! read more
