A small traditional Korean restaurant hidden in a cute plaza. A location not where you'd expect a Korean spot is Hansin Gamjatang. When my friend recommended a new PBS place I had to try it. The restaurant décor is not the best or tidiest, but overall I'm here for the food and so far it's a good start. Pork bone soup: The soup is packed with flavor, but still balanced. Not too spicy, not too salty, the soup is just very enjoyable. Soup is also very meaty, I got a variation of different bone, not just the pork neck. Rice is not the purple rice mix, but the white rice, that's not too wet. Perfect for soaking that delicious soup. Side dishes: Came with three side dishes, kimchi, sesame seaweed and fish cake. The sesame seaweed just edged out the fish cake in the competition of side dishes. The seaweed was nice and chewy with a good mix of savory sesame flavor, hard to find in other Korean restaurants. Fish cake was delicious, as always, and more common. Would definitely come back and try some other dishes and get the PBS again.

The food was very average. The service was pretty bad - we had to walk to the counter to get anyone to take our order or bring us water. The space is clean overall

It's been a while since I've had Gam Ja Tang (Pork Bone Soup) so when a friend suggested I try this new place, of course I had to. There was a generous amount of meat on the bones and lots of each side dish. As usual, it was served in a cast iron bowl, still bubbling hot. The flavour wasn't bad but I think it would have been better if the broth had been cooked a bit longer. The side dishes were very good. The rest of the menu had some interesting dishes that I would come back to try. Somebody told me that it's the same owners as the previous business in this space. Unfortunately, the furniture shows the wear, with torn upholstery.

My favourite Korean restaurant in Markham, serving up lots of classic dishes in huge portions. I usually come for their amazing soondae dishes, but this time we opted for their Chicken Katsu and the Pork Bone Soup The katsu is a must-get here, the portion size is HUGE and the sauce they make to pair with it is insanely good! The food and service were great as always, but this time when we visited, the price we paid was different from the price listed on the menu Otherwise it would be 5 stars!

Mixed review. I really like their spicy rice cake I've ordered it multiple times and it's chewy and not overly spicy. Fish cake was good too. One of the better places for spicy rice cake. The pork bone on the other hand was horrible. It tasted sour and the meat does not taste fresh. I got take out so I called to double check the soup was made fresh and they confirmed it was. I asked if they changed the seasoning and they said they didn't. So I'm not sure what happened but I had a few sips and a few bites of the meat and no it was not edible. Maybe the meat was not fresh and affected the taste.. I asked my family to try it and same thing. We dumped it and lost out on $15 but better safe than having a bad stomachs ache. They said no one complained about it all day so made it seem like it's my issue which I thought was rude. Anyways moving on. Sharing review of my own experience but maybe you'll experience better

A great new spot if you're looking to support locals and craving for some pork born soup! They are located on the plaza on Kennedy/14th (where Lucullus bakery is) and won't be hard to find as the plaza isn't too big. They offer a variety of Korean dishes but many Korean soup options and variations. There's also combos and happy hour for pork bone soup as well (11a-12p). We ordered two regular pork born soup and I had to say, I was surprised how flavourful it was overall. There's a generous amount of meat and soup, and they also offer a pretty good portion of side dishes as well. Definitely a great option if you're in the Markham area, and I will be back. As of covid19, they only offer takeout.

Can here on a fairly busy Saturday. They have a happy hour between 11am-12pm where the pork bone soup is ~$8. We came just in time for that. It was loaded with meat that melted of with the slightest touch. They also have glass noodles in the soups which as different for me and only one potato. It also comes with a bowl of white rice and complimentary Korean appetizers. Flavour-wise it was pretty good but indistinguishable from any other Korean place in Markham. We also ordered spicy tteokbokki, which came in this little pot. The rice cakes where nice and chewy but I thought the spicy sauce was pretty bland and watery. It also wasn't spicy at all which was a little disappointing. They also quite a few items with blood sausages which is pretty rare to find. I didn't order it but for anyone who is looking for Korean blood sausages, they have all the options.

Updated menu accurate for Sept. 27, 2020.

Moderately empty at 2:00 so there's no waiting for seats. Not sure how long their pork bone soup promo lasts, but it's 2 for $16 as of Sept. 27, 2020. You can see the handwritten promo on the door. The food was decent quality - nothing particularly outstanding but no complaints. They are closed at 3:30 - 5:00 for break time. Accepts cash and debit only. Small discount for cash payment and they give you a points card. Not quite sure how it works because the formatting is wonky and littered with typos. The prices on the regular menu looks a bit high compared to the dozens of Korean restaurants in the area. But if you're looking for a quick and cheap meal with a partner, the pork bone soup special is a great value. Parking is garbage as usual in this plaza, but they have 2 whole parking spots reserved I believe. So good luck finding a spot.

I was craving something hearty and warm and Hansjn Gamjatang really hit the spot. My boyfriend and I both ordered the Gamjatang despite their extensive selection. I had pretty high expectations since they named their restaurant after their signature dish. They served the Gamjatang with a dipping sauce which seemed like ponzu and wasabi. It was a pleasant surprise as no other restaurant I've been to serves it this way. It really complimented the meat. The soup itself was bubbling hot and there was also glass noodle in the soup which I enjoyed. It's not the most flavourful Gamjatang I've ever had but it wasn't bad either. We both ordered the small size but the portions were generous. The service was attentive and they also offer 10% discount if you pay in cash. I would recommend this place and will be back to try some of their other dishes.

Had another visit here. Tried some new bulgogi dishes. Nice and savoury home style cooking. Worth a try.

Spicy Tteokbokki and Kimchi Stew (with side dishes, a bowl of rice split into three)

Waiter was a little rude from the get go when we walked in the door. She seemed a little irritated because we were teenagers. The selection is quite limited and there aren't any drink options or desserts. The soda which is not even on the menu, costs $2.50. For that price why not go to Mcdonalds (another customer near where we were sitting even brought in a starbucks drink). In addition, the cell signal inside the restaurant is quite poor. I immediately noticed a ginormous fly and the singer IU is glitching over the speaker. The ambience is quite poor and not aesthetic. The food took a decent time to come. The food is quite good, the Spicy Tteokbokki was delicious and the Kimchi Stew was decent. They only provided three serving of side dishes and it was very mid. Overall, there are better Korean restaurants with food and dine-in.

    Michelle K.

Pretty good authentic Korean food in Markham area. I loved their seafood pancake and especially their sauce that goes with it. I've had a lot of Korean pancakes and usually their sauce is all the same but this one was different, tasted homemade and was delicious. Pricing is pretty much the same just like any other Korean restaurant in the area - similar to Owl but way better food. If you're thinking of going to Owl, I highly suggest you try this instead.

Tteokboki + Don Katsu and Pork Bone Soup (L)

For dine-in, the booth seats are all being used. No skipping a booth to distance, those bamboo walls definitely do not protect against the people seated behind. Probably a family ran restaurant, not that many people working so if there are a few tables seated food takes a while to be served. The menu does not have much variety, so the options felt very limited for trying to have a family style meal. Service is below mediocre; the waitress had a little attitude and communication must be kept simple. Customers that were liked more seemed to have gotten extra complimentary side dishes. The food was okay, very home style and average. Overall, would not be back. There are better Korean restaurants that are closer to home, that serves more side dishes.

We ordered the bossam, seafood pancake, and budae jeongol and the bill came to ~$100. The bossam was quite a large portion and the flavour was quite delicious. Our favourite item was the seafood pancake. We devoured that and if given a choice to only order one dish, I would definitely recommend the seafood pancake. The budae jeongol (as a solo dish) could easily feed two people. They pack the soup in two large circular soup-like takeout containers and the ingredients in a square container - same as the ones that the bossam and seafood pancake came in. There were plenty of tteokbokki, sausages, cabbage, and ramen noodles. We put the dish together in a wok and kept it heated on a portable induction cooktop. They gave four containers of banchan: fish cakes, japchae, radish kimchi, and mandu. My only complaint about this experience (4.5/5) was their inaccurate waiting time. I called in around 5 PM on a Wednesday to place my order and they quoted that the order would take around 20 to 25 minutes. I showed up ~30 mins after I called and they didn't have the food ready until 5:50/5:55 PM. I understand that they're busy, but I would have appreciated a more accurate wait time.

I usually get their hot pot size of pork bone soup to share with others. It comes with lots of pork bones and a huge piece of potato. Bossom 5/5 - I love their bossom here. The only complain is that their bossom comes with lettuce rather than napa cabbage. Still super delicious though. Banchans 5/5 - Their kimchi is the best banchan they have. I often times also buy just their kimchi to take home as it's very garlicky, fresh and delicious. Spicy pork rice 3.5/5 - A good rice option, but I still prefer their soup better. Jajangmein 3.5/5 - Another one of those dishes that I can skip. Only get it so that we can have a variety saucey noodle dish. I can't recommend this spot enough. Make sure to get their kimchi! But also make sure to check your order before leaving. One time I was there, there was a flustered teenager working the front of house. Because I'm a regular there, I touched my order he handed to me and noticed there was no hot soup burning my hand while holding the take out bag. When I brought this up, the chef came out and also mentioned that he had forgotten to pack my two containers of soup. Thank goodness I checked. Unfortunately when I got home, I noticed that he also forgot to pack my two white rice that comes with my soup. So just make sure to double and triple check before leaving when you get your take out! Once we placed our order, we got the complimentary banchan (potato noodles, spicy cucumber, seaweed, kimchi and pancake). The banchan was not as fresh as the ones we used to experience at their Bamburgh Circle location (so sad that this location closed) but was still good & edible. My gamjatang arrived piping hot & the portion was massive. The flavor of the broth was missing the depth of the Bamburgh location but it was still delicious. The portion was so huge that I didn't finish my bowl like I normally do. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal especially the mackerel. He said it's the best grilled fish he's had. Diners tuck these soft meat slices into lettuce, Napa cabbage, and turnip with a smear of the savoury bean sauce for a protein packed bite. Our table was split about the haemui pa jeon ($28.99). The size of a medium pizza, it's made for a group. Personally, I found it way too thick and didn't contain enough ingredients to balance out the doughiness of the Korean style pancake. Conversely, my relatives preferred the heft as it contrasted the crispy exterior and soft interior. I guess it depends if you're a thin versus pan crust type of pizza lover. I'm firmly in the Neapolitan camp. I thoroughly enjoyed the crust that develops on the bottom of yachae dolsot bibimbap ($18.99). And the hot stone rice bowl contained a good combination of ingredients to ensure there was plenty of vegetables and beef to go around. De Chou's LA kalbi ($34.99) was rather neutral with very little sauce, so you mostly taste the beef. I personally would have preferred more sauce to help caramelize onto the beef ribs, but the older members of the family appreciated the plainness and liked that it was tender. (3/5) De Chou Korean Restaurant - Lunch Review…read more We stopped by De Chou Korean Restaurant for lunch today since we happened to be nearby. The sign said it opens at 11:30 a.m., and true to their word, the doors opened exactly on time. The restaurant itself is quite large and impressively clean -- that was my first good impression. We originally went in because of the sign outside advertising Korean ginseng chicken soup, but when we asked the server, he told us it's no longer on the menu. A bit disappointing, especially since my wife wasn't feeling well and I thought that soup would've been perfect for her. We ordered two Bulgogi Dolsot Bibimbaps ($21.99 each). The portion was decent, but the flavor was a bit bland and not salty enough for our taste -- overall I'd give it a 6/10. We also tried the Japchae ($13.99). Unfortunately, it was too greasy, a bit slimy, and overcooked -- about a 4/10 for me. They served five small side dishes, which were just average (5/10), and a small cup of noodle soup that was lukewarm and slightly sweet -- not to my liking, as I prefer savory over sweet in Korean food. The total came to $65.51 before tip, and we left a standard 15%. To be fair, by the time we finished lunch, there were quite a few tables filled, so maybe other dishes are better. But based on what we ordered today, the food didn't live up to the price. Would I go again? Probably not.
