I was sad that the restaurant Halgatteok replaced is gone but happy that a specialty tteokbokki place has come to the area. I intend to return more often, but on the single occasion I was here, I enjoyed the mala flavored garaetteok which was surprisingly not too spicy for me. The cheese really helps to alleviate the effects of spice. I also enjoyed the mayak rolls, and I hope to come back to try more of their offerings. read more

Came here after class with some friends to tryout grub around the area. I'm not very good with spicy food but still wanted to try their classic dishes. Unfortunately their least spicy was still above my threshold haha (which is good if you're looking for a more authentic Korean experience). Personally I'd love to try the dish if there were some way to get the food less salty and spicy since my diet's usually lighter. I'm glad I came and try the food at least and had a chance to hangout with my friends. The cashier was very nice to us and overall not too loud around lunch time either. I was so excited a tteokbokki place opened up in Northridge! I wanted to order takeout but based on the website's online ordering, it didn't look like you could choose additional toppings so I decided to go there and order in person. Maybe you can put them in the special request section but since it was my first time, I didn't know what extra toppings they had. The place was casual with basic tables on the right side, topping bar on the left, and ordering counter in the back. I decided with my favorite, the rose tteokbokki (mild spice), and wanted to try the gimmari seaweed rolls. I asked the worker which rice cake was the typical one and he said it was the #1 made with wheat flour, but then another worker overheard and told me the more traditional one was the #2 with rice flour, which I ended up choosing. After giving my order, I asked when I could choose my toppings and then they told me that I need to get that first before I order. There's a sign on the topping bar that says the main dish includes egg, rice cake, fish cake, and scallions, so I verified with the workers and they said whatever toppings you get from the bar is additional to what the main dish already has. All of the tongs were used so I had to wait for them to give me a clean one, and be advised that you're using the same tong to grab all the toppings - this includes vegetables, fish cakes/squid, and noodles. I do wish they had individual tongs for each topping so there's less cross-contamination. Finally I was able to finish ordering, but during the whole time of confirming my order, I was holding the tongs in my hand for at least a minute before they noticed and took it for me. Be careful on those extra toppings because I didn't think I got that much but it ended up being an extra $11 charge! Luckily it was enough for two meals. Once I got home and stirred through the food, I noticed they did not give me any sausages which was supposed to be part of the rose tteokbokki. Other than that, the flavor of the sauce was great and the mild was still spicy without being too spicy. I was disappointed in the gimmari because the noodles inside had little flavor, but at least the outside was crispy. Overall the food was good and I would definitely come back for more, but their service could be improved. read more

Been here twice already and have tried Mara, Rose and Grandma tteokbokki as well as rice balls and gimmari. This place is great! It's basically a build your own tteokbokki restaurant. You should ALWAYS add "toppings" to your dishes (veggies, noodles, eggs, meat, etc) since it only comes with the sauce, rice cake, fish cake, and an egg. My husband and best friend are obsessed with anything level two but I'm a chicken and can only handle level one. Which even then is spicy, so if you can't handle spice, level one will be more than enough! Rice balls were soooo flavorful with the seaweed and sesame oil. It's fun to create your own size balls (doesn't come pre rolled; you mix it yourself) Place has been clean both times and staff fairly friendly. I had a great experience the first time I ordered although my drink didn't arrive, the server (shoutout to Vivian) was AMAZING in helping me process a refund, and I was really impressed by the service. The portion size was generous, and everything was delicious. However, the second time I ordered (pictured), I was disappointed. The portion was significantly smaller than the first order, and my rice cake didn't have enough seasoning with the sauce. Plus, the squid tempura didn't feel worth the price. If you're new to the dish get level 1 spice as it already has heat. When you come in there is a cold bar to add additional items to the dish like noodles or more veg. Once you're done eating pay up and go! The drink selection available on this day was the soda machine and can sodas, the other machine was out of service. The service here was great! The hostess was very nice. I had my fourth month old baby with me and she was so helpful in getting me whatever I needed, like water or an extra napkin. The food is AMAZING. I got the rose tteokbokki. You can add other toppings but I just like it as it is. It comes with rice cake (choose the thickness of the rice cake and the spicy level you want) egg, onions, fish cake, sausage, and bacon. It's soooo good! I wanted to eat all of it, but the portion size is pretty generous, so I took half of it in a To-go box home. I love the environment. It's such a cute little restaurant. I finally tried Halgatteok for lunch. The inside is clean the young lady was kind and helpful. I ordered the tkeboki spice level 2 with the rice that you can form into a ball. I also got a Diet Coke. The food is really good has a lot of flavor and comes in a generous portion. I was able to take leftovers home. Spice level 2 is definitely spicy. I can't imagine how hot level 3 is. This popular Korean franchise has over 200 locations in Korea and is finally here in the US, just opening 3 months ago. You first pick your "tteok" or rice cakes. They offer 3 different kinds like mil tteok (wheat flour), ssal tteok (rice flour), and garae tteok (longer and thicker). They even have a toppings bar where you can add in veggies, noodles, seafood, etc. We ordered the Grandma (OG sauce) and Rose (creamy, spicy, cheesy) Tteokbokki. We recently tried visiting Halgatteok in Koreatown after KCON LA, but its parking lot is valet only and disabled parking is very limited. We left because of these issues. When we found out that Halgatteok opened a new location in Northridge, we immediately went to visit the restaurant. The parking was easy and two disabled parking spaces conveniently serve the restaurant and neighboring businesses. Being a fan of K-Dramas, K-Pop, cooking Korean food, and learning the Korean language, eating authentic tteokbokki has been high on our list. We were not disappointed at all with the food at Halgatteok. Also, we loved the K-Pop music playing in the restaurant. Halgatteok appears to be a combined word of grandma + let's go eat + tteokboki. The restaurant themes itself that you're enjoying delicious food that grandma made. Tteokbokki is a culturally significant food in Korea once served to royalty and is now often served by street vendors to children after school. It is a comfort food. Halgatteok is setup to allow customers to pick any extra toppings they want to add to their tteokbokki dish. Standard offerings in the tteokbokki are the specific tteokbokki type you want, fish cakes, a whole egg, and a choice of sauce type. There are several side dishes that can be ordered, but it is not a typical banchan side dishes found at other Korean restaurants like KBBQ's. We ordered a grandma (halmoni) tteokbokki, a rose tteokbokki, both with the #2 version of tteokbokki which is called ssal tteok. We also ordered sweet potato tempura, rice ball, squid tempura, and mayak gimbap. The tteokbokki, though spice level 1, was spicy, but not in a bad way. We added mozzarella cheese and that helped balance the spice level and added a delicious flavor. Highly recommend the cheese topping. The tteokbokki itself had the perfect amount of chewiness. The rose tteokbokki was not as spicy and I believe that is because the heavy cream tamed the gochugaru spice. The broth reminded me of Olive Garden's Zuppa Toscana because of the heavy cream, bacon, and sausage flavors. If there was a potato and kale or blanched spinach option to add, I think it would make the rose tteokbokki even better. This was my favorite of the two tteokbokkis we ordered though not to say the grandma tteokbokki was not excellent in its own right. I wish I would have added ramyon (ramen) and tofu to the tteokbokki's to help soak up the sauces. The rice ball is served as a bowl of rice mixed with other things. Gloves are provided to take a portion of the rice and ball it up in hand to eat. This was fun and tasty. The other side dishes we ordered were all cooked well and tasted delicious. The restaurant was easy to move around in with a mobility aid and an employee kindly assisted me with the restroom door which I always consider to be a high level of service. However, we were told which table to sit at instead of being free to use whatever table we felt comfortable sitting at like every other customer. There were at least three tables that could accommodate a wheelchair. It would be better for the staff to make a table suggestion such as "I believe you may find this table best to sit at as you'll have plenty of room, easy access to the soda fountain machine and restroom, and be most comfortable at" instead of saying "let me have you sit at this table". I think this is just an awareness issue and not a discrimination issue as the staff was very kind and I believe their intentions were for the good. We were very impressed with the food and the quick & friendly service of the staff. I highly recommend visiting Halgatteok and I recommend taking advantage of the extra toppings offered. So many great choices and options, but my #1 favorite is the rose tteokbokki with ssal tteok (smaller rice cakes) and melted cheese added. I got the rose tteokboki mild thinking to yupduk in k town, but this place is not spicy. It is truly mild in spice. I got the thick tteok which is supposed to be what they are known for but the flavors don't stick to the rice cake that well. I'm thinking the noodle or the small tteok works better. Maybe next time. The sauce is pretty soupy... I wish it was thicker and would stick to the fish cakes, sausage and rice cakes more. The rose was too American cheese flavored for me... it wasn't the best sauce. I had way better in Koreatown. Honestly, not as good as yup duk. It's cute and close enough to where I live. I may give it another go, but overall disappointing. Service is not the greatest.
