Came here for the first time last night and was really excited to try it. The sushi was absolutely delicious, but unfortunately the customer service is the reason I'm giving two stars. My husband and I arrived around 8:30 PM, and the restaurant was pretty packed. The only available options were a table right by the door--the screen door was open and made it very cold--or a table for six in the middle of the restaurant. I let the waitress know we didn't want to sit by the door. When I noticed the open table in the middle and sat down, she abruptly told us it was reserved only for larger groups--even though last call was in about 20 minutes and the restaurant was closing soon. What made it more confusing was that several tables for four only had two people sitting at them, so it felt like there could have been some flexibility. After a few minutes, we were directed to a table in the very back near the bathrooms, which wasn't ideal either. When we expressed that we didn't want to sit there, it felt like there was little effort to accommodate us or improve the situation. Thankfully, a very kind couple nearby offered to switch tables with us and moved to the spot by the door. The food was good, the service was decent, and its an overall nice little spot to go to. It was also clean which is always a plus. I wouldn't call it exceptional but I also wouldn't say it was bad. We ordered an appetizer, three different rolls, a baked roll, and sushi/sashimi. The chicken Karaage was amazing! The Canadian roll was good, it had a nice balance of the jalapeño sauce which added some acidity to the food. The Jessica Alba roll was underwhelming, I was not crazy about it, I felt it lacked body. The Shrimp-trio was also good but lacked freshness. The Volcano roll was good, it sort of tasted like a whopper, it probably had to do with the mayo, but the baked salmon was great. Then, the black snapper sashimi was interesting because it comes with truffle and scallions and although good, lacked a certain freshness I am used to with the sushi. I brought my friend here for her birthday. It was a Friday night. We came here a little early. Not crowded at all. Our food came out pretty quickly. Not sure if this was the owner or the manager but she made sure to approach every table and ask how everything was going. I thought that was very sweet. I was surprised to come in for lunch and learn that the original owners had retired. Admittedly, I felt a bit dubious about whether the experience would still hold up. The exterior had been remodeled to feature large, vibrant images of sushi, while the interior remained largely the same. We were greeted warmly and sat at the sushi bar. As expected, the menu had been updated, but I was happy to see some old favorites still available: yanagi roll, mexican roll, jessica alba roll. I was curious about the featured items on the board. The sushi chef handed me my first order--the scallop carpaccio with honey yuzu--and simply said, "No soy sauce needed." In my head, I thought, we shall see. You know that scene in Ratatouille where Remy describes every flavor in a dish? That was me. My mouth was experiencing an explosion of flavors, with a perfect burst of lemon tying it all together. It was phenomenal. We ordered another because it was just that good. And he was correct, soy sauce was not needed nor was it used. We also tried the crunchy eel and blue crab roll, which was equally delicious. Honestly, writing about it now makes me wish I could go back already. I'll definitely be making the effort to visit more often! And hey, the price has gone up compared to the past but the reality is the price of everything has gone up and inevitably it will trickle down. My family and I have driven by this spot for years, but usually frequent another local spot. We came in when our usual place was closed, and our experience was so positive that we have since come back to Yanagi, and it's now in our rotation for sushi spots! I really love that the price is right, and the quality is fantastic. Yanagi is situated in a strip mall, and there is a decent sized lot that shares spaces with the other businesses. Be sure to double check signage before you park since some of the spots are designated for specific businesses or have time limits. Inside, there are 10-12 counter seats, and around 10 tables that can be configured for groups between 2-8 people. The space is clean, and the service is wonderful-Kris in particular was really friendly and gave us some great recommendations. - Yellowtail Carpaccio (Yellowtail sashimi with sliced jalapeno served with half ponzu and yuzu with a hint of sriracha): a wonderful appetizer-their yellowtail has great flavor and the ponzu/yuzu combination is mouthwatering. - 911 Roll (Spicy tuna & cucumber, topped with avocado, habanero sauce): fairly standard roll, but delicious and great to share since it comes with eight pieces. - Rising Yellowtail Roll (Spicy tuna topped with yellowtail, cilantro, green onion): One of my favorites! I loved the cilantro and yellowtail together and this roll tasted really fresh and bright. - Sexy Roll (Spicy shrimp, avocado, cucumber, topped with salmon, chili oil & sesame oil): All of the flavors were working for me here-the spicy shrimp was less mushy than the spicy tuna, and the pieces of salmon on top were thick and buttery. This would be the perfect place for someone just testing their waters with sushi and have yet to be spoiled by the more refined sushi restaurants out there. Came here one night to eat. Saw good reviews in youtube and instagram so I said we have to try it. Anyway we ordered the takoyaki to start with and it was disappointing. They served us with a 1 out of 5 hot outside and cold inside takoyaki! Meaning it is frozen and fried when someone orders it. We just let it go. Their sushi is pretty ok. I'be had better. You know when the sushi restaurateur tells you not to use too much soy sauce that the fish is going to be fresh and delicious. I went to pick up a takeout order after a very long day, and the restaurant was about to close. The woman who packed my food (probably an owner) was telling me to use a little sesame oil and black pepper, and I mentioned something about having gluten free soy sauce at home. The man next to us (whom I'm guessing is also an owner) said "not too much soy sauce," and that was when I knew that both of them care very much about the food they're putting out. He said that he usually sauces the fish himself but couldn't because I'm GF--and it's always so reassuring to have it confirmed that the allergy note on the order was taken seriously. The fish was so good! There wasn't too much rice as there often is with chirashi, and the pickles were also great. It was nicely plated. The wasabi was really pungent and awesome. It was our first time trying the sushi restaurant as we live nearby. We ordered the bento boxes and 2 sushi plates. The sushi was delicious and fresh and the bento boxes had a great presentation but didn't seem that there was anything extra. As we were 2 people visiting, the bento boxes came out to our table 2 separate times about 7 mins apart. Typically we like to start eating when our whole party get the food so one party had salmon that was cold. The dipping sauce for the tempura was also cold.
