Wow! I cannot believe I haven't tried AIKAN until now. This is by far the BEST AYCE SUSHI in all of the SFV! All of the nigiri was super fresh and so soft. The rolls were all great and full of flavor. There literally was not a single item we ordered that we didn't like! We paid $42 for the regular menu and there was plenty of variety with plenty of appetizers, nigiri, rolls, and more! The service was fast and easy as our server was always making sure we had everything we needed and our food was arriving quickly and they did a great job with presentation. The ambiance was nice and casual but also very clean and nice not too casual like most AYCE places. Plenty of booths and bar seating!! My impression here is mixed. What's sticking is smaller cuts of fish in the poke fish order, and I did a bad job ordering a mix of rolls bc they were too similar. Rolls are either spicy tuna or initiation crab, and the variations from there. It's more expensive than the local Hikari Sushi (AYCE in Chatsworth) . The interiors look newer than Hikari but that's on the superficial. Service was good. On fish portion, the nigiri orders were great - seared salmon, scallops. I should stick to this next time. Rolls are mostly stuffed with imitation crab or spicy tuna. We generally avoid tuna for mercury watch outs so it was a lot of imitation crab for us. I will do a better job looking at my mix of rolls-- someone said they all tasted the same, and I had the same experience. But it was probably because we ordered rolls that were too similar across person to person (eg viper and tiger). I like that the rolls are fewer pieces so I can manage the portion better and try more rolls instead. If I order teriyaki dinner again, I would ask for sauce on the side as it is too sweet with the full portion poured over. read more

We visited Aikan Sushi and had a really good experience. The sushi was fresh and well prepared, and we especially appreciated the all you can eat option. It made it easy to try a variety of items and made the meal feel like a good value. I was with a group, so it was a bit chaotic once the plates started coming out, which made it hard to grab photos, but I did manage to get one of the nigiri. Everything we tried was solid. This is one of my personal favorite AYCE restaurants in the valley. They have a large selection of rice free options and recently they began accepting takeout orders which is great. The kitchen items, which are generally an after thought, are genuinely good here. The service is a hit or miss depending on the day, and it is a pretty typical AYCE sushi vibe. The main thing I enjoy about this restaurant is that their rolls are actually 1/2 rolls. This gives you the ability to try a much wider variety of sushi. It also allows for you not to be stuck with a role you don't enjoy. I didn't find the premium options to be worth it for my taste personally. We ordered a variety of specialty rolls, sashimi plates, and nigiri and everything was delicious. My favorite were the jalapeño topped rolls they had. Had a great experience here once again, this time with a group of 7 as we celebrated a birthday on a Wednesday evening!!! This spot unfortunately doesn't do any reservations days in advance and even with coming a few hours beforehand, we still couldn't reserve a table. The lady gave an estimate that our wait may be 15 minutes earlier, but of course when we all came there, the wait was about an hour because a lot more people came. When you give your name, they ask for your phone number as they will text you. On the bright side, the AYCE sushi was amazing and delicious, with the sushi coming out very efficiently!!! We all ate our stomachs' fill and enjoyed every round. The salmon sashimi was fresh, melt-in-your-mouth, and soft! My favorite is always the fried squid. The fried edamame was a surprise to me and I enjoyed each bite as well. I thought it tasted kind of off. The rice that came with my chiriashi wasn't very warm The rice had a pickled cucumber ? garnish on it that I had to scrape off to get to the rice that I really wanted I tried some seafood poppers that were so sweet and pepper that I couldn't even taste the fish. When you are in an AYCE mood for Sushi, one of the best places in the SFV is Aikan Sushi, in Northridge. This time, I visited over the weekend and the place was packed. In order to get a booth, I had to wait outside for about 20 minutes. They have a good selection for their AYCE menu and I always choose the regular (as opposed to the premium). My favorite is always the Sashimi and here, their Poke versions of Salmon and Yellowtail (which comes with a slice of jalapeño) are my two favorites. You get only 4 pieces of each for an order and I clearly noticed how thin the fish slices have become. After some rounds of those, it was time to move onto repetitions of shrimp and seared shrimp sushi. They always hit the spot. During this process, I also go through several servings of ginger. Their miso soup is superb, always served piping hot with fresh cut scallions floating in the cloudy pool. Delicious. I cannot leave without having my two cooked choices. The jalapeño shrimp and the fried oysters. Both are served immediately after they are fried and assembled for presentation. Be careful not to bite into them right away, because they are real hot. The shrimp is plump and cooked perfectly. The oysters always fresh and juicy with a nice crisp and brown outer fried panko covering. Service here is always polite, attentive and swift. Plates are taken away the moment they get empty and new orders arrive soon. You will never feel neglected. The whole operation is well run, because there are people outside waiting to come in. If only they played Japanese music, instead of the loud pop or rock and roll inside. Unfortunately, that adds to the noise level of an already crowded (and talkative), dining space. read more

My go to AYCE sushi spot in the valley. The quality of the fish is amazing for the price. Their yellowtail, salmon and seared shrimp nigiri is to die for. It just melts in your mouth. And I also recommend the jalapeño shrimp! Service is quick and everyone is friendly. There's typically a wait around dinner time that ranges from 20-60 min and I think it's worth the wait. Second time at this location for dinner. It's way smaller than the others that we've been to. Plenty of parking which always is great. Come a little before the dinner rush as it does get crowded and there's always a line. Menu wise, some items have changed name wise. They're known for their AYCE sushi's. Both the regular menu as well as the premium. You're still able to order a la carte items. But for the price you would pay for that, just seems a better deal having the All you can eat. Same concept everywhere with the order sheet. There's a time limit on dining. Order everything you want for the first round. Mainly people last about 3 if they don't get full by the second round. Plenty of starters to choose from. I like to keep that to minimum as I rather have sushi over anything else. Mussels, which I highly recommend. The sausage, it's good but I think they downsize the order. I could have sworn it was 3 piece per order but now it's 2. Then there's the yellowtail and salmon hama (collar). The yellowtail always seems to be out at all the location I've been to. Shishito peppers is always a good choice. Easy to enjoy as they're still light and not over filling. The carpaccio which is now poke on the menu. That's also a must. What sucks is, if you order a couple order, it all comes separately. There's so much plates that it takes up the table. Can't they just combine it onto one plate. Then comes the sushi. Give it all to me. Each order is one piece. There's pretty much everything that you can choose from. Beside sushi, they have some pieces that's doesn't have rice which is really nice. They're an easy eat without getting full from all the rice. We don't get the rolls as I rather have more to enjoy than having 6/8 piece of the same thing with loads of rice. The food was great. Everything come out at different time so be advised with that. Also, some items didn't get delivered to our table which was ok. Plus some dishes have been taken off the menu from the last time I was here. They used to have 1.00 beer which was great. My son was craving sushi so I took him here for lunch. I chose this place because, of all the sushi places that I've tried here in the valley, this is the best of all! We came on a week day and requested for a booth. They said it would take half an hour, but we only waited about 10 mins. As soon as we were seated, our host took our drinks order then our tallied order. Appetizer came really quick followed by the main one after the other. Everything was so delicious! All you can eat is really hard to gauge, but we managed. Towards the end, I almost ordered a sushi roll which I realized I cannot finish anymore. We were so stuffed, but really satisfied! Service is always super quick, sushi is so fresh and prepared in smaller servings so you can try so much more food. I've been to this place a few times, but over the past few months, I've noticed a decline in portion sizes--especially with the sashimi. The fish slices have become noticeably thinner, and even the rolls feel like they have less fish in them. On my recent visit, I did the all-you-can-eat option, and after a few rolls, I felt like I was getting mostly rice. As much as I love coming to this sushi place, this is also as much as I dislike to come here because of the person who's in the front who is always there that doesn't have the best customer service. We usually drive about an hour away to come to the sushi place and the last few times we have been disappointed not from the food, but from the hostess, who always has an attitude of some kind. Joon is the hostess that is always there. We called once to check the wait times as you were going late. When we called, and she said that they can accommodate us, by the time we got there by 9:15 after driving an hour away, she was refusing to seat us as she said there are other parties ahead of us when we had called and drove an hour away to get here. Second time with my friend and some more situation, ask you to get seated. Another time with another friend and he arrived early, and there was plenty of space however refused to put his name on the list until the rest of the party arrives so when we all arrived, we had to wait again for another 20 minutes to be seated. It's just not acceptable to get this kind of service every time. We are regulars, even though we're living an hour away and we bring a lot of our friends to try the place because we really like it. Unfortunately this is the closest location to our house, however Pasadena location is our favorite from everything including service. I hope the service changes for the better soon. I've tried a lot of sushi buffets over the years, and Aikan Sushi is definitely the cream of the crop. There's a reason why there is always a long wait for this place. The ordering is a bit weird if it's your first time. You get a sheet to mark which items you want, and you only get 3 rounds of ordering. If you're opting for the Premium dinner, make sure to max out your 1-per-person items on the 1st round, because they charge for the next round per item, even if you didn't order the max for the table. MOST MEMORABLE ITEMS: Black Pork Sausage 5/5* Plump little babies that snapped when you bite into them. The skin has crispy bits of texture from being blistered, and inside was juicy with good flavor. It was a nice break from all the fish. Yellowtail Sashimi 5/5* Sliced with enough thickness, these translucent morsels with a streak of pale pink were almost too pretty to eat. Fish tasted fresh and simple, without much masking the ocean flavor. Truffle Halibut (premium) 5/5* Just barely a hint of truffle oil, but enough to elevate this halibut sashimi. Ama Ebi, Fried Soft Shelled Crab, Fried Oysters 5/5* They have a fry master back there in the kitchen! Fried items came out so piping hot, tasted clean, and had that delicate crisp you'd get from a perfect tempura fry. The ebi head was so crispy, you didn't have to worry about being stabbed by the pointy parts. Soft shelled crab and oysters were meaty, plump and juicy. Seared Tuna 5/5* I was enjoying the seared salmon until the seared Tuna came out. Whoa, this was way better! With the skin on, there was a smokiness that left the seared salmon in the dust. Uni 3.5/5* Presentation was phenomenal, topped with a thin fried lotus root chip and flower decor. The uni itself was a rich orangey color, but the taste wasn't as sweet as I hoped. Although the uni texture was spot on, soft but with that fresh firmness, there was a touch of zinc flavor that I didn't enjoy so much. Salmon Kama 5/5* I usually prefer salmon over yellowtail kamas because they are fattier and not as dry. Kamas are always good, but this one was noticeably better because they actually glaze the top with some flavor and grill it enough to have extra crispy skin and smokiness. ITEMS TO PASS ON: Jalapeño Popper 2/5* This didn't have the any spice to it at all. Drenched in sauce and huge, this is an easy pass. They also give you a huge portion, so order wisely. Karaage 3/5* Not the juiciest chicken nor the best fry. It was crispy, but not a delicate layer and some pieces were too dry. Careful how many orders you put in because the portion came out huge. Beef Teriyaki 1/5* Super dry and inedible. Overall, Aikan is a bang for your buck considering the quality of ingredients, variety of the menu, and freshly made to order dishes. Service was great and they came to check on us quite often. Everything was visually appealing, with the utmost care and attention to detail on plating. Sushi smaller than my pinky. All the pieces are pinky size so this is not a one off. Smaller than soy sauce packet. As if they decided to make it as small as possible. I have not seen a cut this small in all my travel. Kinda insulting. Do they care what a customer would thin looking at the final product? What a dishonest rip off. The picture on the menu is grossly misleading showing "normal" size sushi. They should label this as a miniature or a sampler set and in the menu post a picture of actual final product. If cost is issue, which it is understandable, just include fewer pieces but in NORMAL size for normal adult.
