Stopped by Northern Cafe Bar & Grill for lunch sometime on a weekday. Plenty of parking spots available to park. Inside the eatery was bright and plenty of tables available for dining. We were greeted right away by the hostess and she also sat us down. Excellent customer service from the moment we came into the establishment until we left. We tried their famous Chongquing Crispy Chicken along with the Beef, Chicken and Shrimp Fried Rice. It was yummy. Definitely glad we stopped by to try their food. The servings for both the entree and mixed fried rice were plentiful. We can't wait to comeback to try other food items on the menu. I had high expectations for this place because I enjoyed the food in the Northern Cafe restaurant at Downtown LA. But sadly, I was disappointed by this branch on Reseda. The menu was on laminated paper which must be a few years old and felt disgusting to touch. I started with hot tea and it was served in a metal cup. I wish they served it in a nice ceramic container for customer's enjoyment. For lunch, we ordered chicken chow mein and their pork and crab dumpling (like a xiao long bao). The chicken chow mein had a boatload of cabbage and probably 10 strips of chow mein noodles. It should have been called cabbage noodles (lol). The pork and crab dumplings would have been a hit, but the dumpling shell had a "soapy" smell. The meat inside was soft and tasted good, but I couldn't get over the smell of the shell. We would have also wanted to try seaweed salad, but it was unavailable on this day. The parking at Northern Cafe is plenty. The staff is also courteous. But given the state of the food and overall feel, I give it only two stars. Truthfully, you can find better Chinese food close by this area. I was craving a beef roll and happened to stumble upon Northern Cafe while looking for nearby spots. They have a small parking lot and the space itself is spacious. My sister and I were greeted right way and got to choose our booth. There were a few people dining in, but they still had plenty of seating available. Our server was super kind and attentive. I haven't been to the physical location but I live a mile out and its raining - so I can't speak to the ambiance or service in store. I ordered the Spicy Braised Noodle Soup which was a bit of a disappointment. There were three beef slices with one being pure ligament which was inedible. The broth didn't have any flavor, it tasted like hot water with chili oil. What I did like were the thick cut noodles and its texture but they still missed something that I can't quite figure out. We also ordered orange chicken which had a good flavor but the texture was mushy rather than having an enjoyable crunch. We also ordered chicken chow mein which was decent. This review is for a delivery order. I am very happy I finally tried this place out. They have a large selection and it doesn't disappoint. I ordered the Shrimp Wontons in spicy sauce. Really good. Had great shrimp flavor and the wontons were the perfect chewiness. It wasn't too spicy and the sauce clung to the wontons so you get a perfect bite every time. Next was the Stir Fried cabbage and the Sautéed green beans, if you like these vegetables you will love these dishes. Very flavorful and huge portions, they both come with white rice. The last thing I ordered were their DanDan Noodles. This was my least favorite of the items. That may be my fault I ordered them mild spicy and to me the dish lacked flavor. I am no expert on how DanDan noodles are prepared I just would have preferred if the sauce was thicker and stuck to the noodles. My first time at this location. I tried the one in Hollywood before a show so we didn't get a chance to relax and enjoy. We all loved everything we got. We like eating family style so we can try a little bit of everything. Green beans were the table favorite and must have. I really like the fried rice because it was flavorful without being drowned in soy sauce. I was the only one eating the wonton soup dumpling. Skin was a little thicker and gummier but I do realize it needs to be able to hold the soup and meat inside. Dumpling was tasty and comforting. Orange chicken was better than most fast food Chinese places. Crispier and the sauce wasn't too sweet. I didn't like the thick noodles in the chow mein. It's not what I expected. But the flavor was good. The young male servers were all nice and attentive. Greeted and seated the minute we walked in the door. Very nice and open seating. Northern Chinese cuisine is so good! We were in the mood for some good dumplings and noodle, and I remembered that I wanted to try this restaurant Northern Cafe right by CSUN. It's a nice, spacious restaurant with plenty of booths and windows. The staff were friendly and the food came out on time, so that's a plus there. Now when it came to our meal, we definitely enjoyed everything that we ordered. We started out with Garlic Chicken Wings and Popcorn Chicken (not spicy at all, but delicious), and they both were great starters, especially if you like having the saltier side of your fried chicken. The Popcorn Chicken is almost addicting and it's easy to finish it before you know it. Then out comes the House Special Beef Noodle Soup which I think is almost a mandatory must-have. I did wish I went with hand-pulled noodles instead of the regular noodle, but you can't go wrong with any of their noodle options. The broth was, warm, calming, and steeped in the wonderful aromatic beef flavor, while the noodle and beef were cooked to near perfection. Add some (or a lot) of chili oil, and you have yourself some noodle nirvana! The handmade Juicy Pork Dumplings may be hot (caution), but slurping the hot soup out of them was half the fun! They were well made and were just a treat. 8 pieces are plenty to start so they're not stingy with their portions. Finally, the Angus Beef Fried Rice was our last dish and it was quite good although it fell a bit short compared to the other dishes. It's not that it was not tasty, it just wasn't as tantalizing and was a bit more one-note and could have uses a bit more kick in the flavors. All in all though, I'm looking forward to coming back to try more of their menu! read more

I went here with my aunt in northridge. I had to take care of my grandfather who has cancer. We came here because we had to order dinner take out because we didn't have time to go to the grocery store to get food. She craves this place and same with my uncle. We ordered the beef roll pancake. It was worse than what I had at other places but I enjoyed it still. It had a sweet and tangy flavor but the texture was a soft bite. For 15$ I don't think it was worth it but I liked the flavor and texture to a certain extent. We also ordered their original beef noodle bowl. It was as I expected, salty and warm. The flavors were okay but it was short from amazing. We also ordered some pork egg rolls and wontons. I tried a small bite of one and it was horrendous. I just don't like pork in general due to its high salt and nitrate/nitrite levels. Overall, the food is decent and the noodles are its highlight. We ordered the chow mein too and the noodles have a fresh texture and taste to it. Inside it was crowded and with a lot of Chinese families. The soup inside was tasty and very hot so make sure you wait a bit to try it. The waiter recommended the BRAISED BEEF NOODLE SOUP. It was good the noodles are made in house. I'm so disappointed with my experience here. I was craving dumplings and remembered having driven past this place a few times so decided to give it a try. Came in on Sunday January 11th around 5ish. We sat down and were given water and a few minutes to peruse the menu. We decided to try the pork dumplings, spicy chicken wontons and beef roll. We were hungry and eagerly waiting on our order. We see a waiter walking towards us with a beef roll and we assumed it must be ours. However he brought it to the booth behind us; which we thought odd since we ordered BEFORE them. We didn't think much of it and we got our dumplings.....the waited. And waited and waited. Our beef roll wasn't coming it seemed and while we waited we overheard the people behind us ask a waiter what the dish was; referring to the beef roll. There had been a mistake and they gave them our dish since they didn't even order a beef roll at all. Mistakes happen and it's totally understandable. What is NOT ok is being ignored, and then LIED TO when I asked where our beef roll was. I know they recognized their mistake and instead of owning up to it and just being honest they avoided our table and just said "it's coming". We literally had finished all our food and still waited an additional 20 min from when we got our first dishes. It really irks me when no accountability is taken and on top of that no effort was made to remedy the situation. The dish wasn't made a priority to remake as it seems they expected us to wait for all the other orders to be made before remaking our dish. When I asked them to cancel it they were quick to say yes and assure me it would get taken off the bill. OBVIOUSLY it needs to get taken off the bill since I never received it. When I paid I asked if the beef roll normally takes that long in hopes they would finally come clean and just be honest. They said there was a mix up in the kitchen. Which is not true either. As much as I loved the dumplings I will not support a business that is going to avoid my table AND lie to me over a mistake that could've been easily fixed. First I will say that I really enjoyed most of the items I ordered and a few not as much. I would definitely go back and will order the items again that I really enjoyed. So let's dive into the must order items.... The shrimp fried rice was absolutely amazing. Lots of shrimp, veggies and seasoned perfectly. The beef roll was surprisingly yummy and had a little sweet spiciness to it. I will always order that. The broccoli was good. So the item that I liked least was the golden noodle soup. It was super spicy, which I don't mind but had no real flavor. The shrimp and pork buns were also lacking in flavor but super heavy on the dough. The restaurant is pretty much self service. You order digitally and then get your own plates, napkins, silverware, water etc.... If you do need anything though the staff is more than willing to assist. Since moving away from SGV and Northeast LA, it's been hard to find real, authentic Chinese food in the valley. However, with Northern Cafe I feel like I've finally found my new fave Chinese restaurant! The beef rolls are pretty good. Still not like what I used to find out in SGV but pretty close. Second time here and I am not disappointed. Their spicy wontons are big and juicy and I love their sauce! The juicy pork dumplings were good but not as soupy as I'd like them. The beef roll is surprisingly crispy but not dry. The portion of bok choy is also great for sharing. The golden prime beef soup is addictingly spicy and comes with a heaping portion of noodles. Came here on a chilly Sunday night around 7 pm. The parking lot is medium-big and had a decent amount of spots open. We were greeted immediately and given the choice to choose where we wanted to sit. We automatically got physical menus and waters. The inside has interesting decorations, ranging from cartoonish posters, to the steering wheels of ships, and a variety of different lighting fixtures. Overall it seems modern and clean. We waited a bit after choosing what we wanted to eat and noticed that we could order for ourselves using a QR code on the table. Other tables were being waited on but since it had been a few minutes, we decided to order online. We decided to get the juicy pork dumpling, the spicy beef noodle soup with regular noodles, and the chongqing spicy chicken. The food was ready pretty quickly and the friendly employee also provided us an extra bowl for the soup since we were going to share between the two of us. I had moderate expectations because I know that this is a small chain restaurant but was definitely surprised with the food items! The juicy pork dumplings exceeded my expectations. They tasted exactly like they should, very savory and juicy on the inside with a thin wrapper. A little pricey but worth it since there aren't that many restaurants in the valley that have this (and have good ones). The Chongqing chicken also exceeded my expectations. I was surprised by how big the pieces of chicken were! Usually they are small but these pieces ranged from bite size to large nugget. It also had excellent flavor, nearly exactly what it should taste like. My only complaint was that it wasn't that spicy, probably to cater to the clientele and I have a high spice tolerance. Still worth it and would definitely get again. The spicy beef noodle soup was just a tiny bit disappointing. Not spicy at all to me and okay weak flavor. The meat was more flavorful and the noodles were good. I think good enough to try and make your own opinion but I personally wouldn't get it again. Still very happy with the experience. Went New Year's Eve, not very busy for dine in, saw lots of people doing take out and DoorDash. I've been to the location next to USC, pretty different taste, I prefer USC more. Ambiance: dark but cozy, lots of seating. Service: servers were nice and attentive. You can either order online at the table, or a server will come and take your order. When we say we got our water which had little white flakes in them, like pieces of food? Not too sure but the server was apologetic and changed it immediately. Cucumbers: 6/10 really salty, very different from the other location and dong tai fung, not very good. Pork soup dumplings: 9/10 very good and juicy Pork wontons in the chilly sauce: 9/10 very good, sauce was amazing and the filling was good. Dan Dan noodles: the hand pulled noodles were delicious, the ground meat was good and spicy. The price was decently priced for Chinese cuisine, definitely cheaper than ding tai fung. You have to get the House Special Beef Noodle Soup here! I went with the knife-cut noodles, and they were nice and chewy. If you prefer flat noodles, you can have that option as well. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the beef was super tender. Plus you get quite a few slices of beef, which you don't always see at noodle restaurants. The potstickers were also fantastic-- crispy on the outside and very juicy inside (careful when you bite into it! It literally explodes with flavor). One downside was the tableside chili oil, which I felt lacked any heat at all. I also was a tad disappointed that the skewers weren't on the menu like the last time I'd been here. Still, the overall quality of the food more than made up for it, and I'll definitely be back. It's great to find such good soup dumplings in the valley however these do come at a bit of a cost. Their soupy and savory filling were incapsulated in a soft chewy bun that made these so perfect to eat. Their steamy and soft textures were excellent for the cold night we chose to come eat. I liked the braised spicy beef soup however it could have used more spicy in my opinion as I realized i should have ordered it at a high spice level since their medium tasted slightly mild, nevertheless it was hearty and had a great amount of protein and noodles.
