Scallion bread
Ellie C.

I heard about this bakery from social media recommendations of its customizable fresh mochi cups and was not disappointed. The inside was new, clean, and well-organized, with choices of pre-packaged breads, desserts, and mooncakes on display and an order-at-the-counter menu for their customizable mochi. Employees were constantly rolling out fresh baked goods from the kitchen and packaging them right in front of us (behind the counter), so you know goods were super fresh. I got two breads to try and both were fantastic: * The scallion bread was infused with fragrant scallion flavor and was light and soft and fluffy. * The taro bread was also light and soft and fluffy, and had a lightly sweet (not too sweet!) taro paste woven throughout. Since I have a sweet tooth, this was my favorite. The prices here are slightly higher than some nearby bakeries, but it seems like the quality and freshness is there to back it up. I didn't see any prepackaged mochi when I went, but am definitely hoping to try some on my next visit! Checkout was smooth and fast. They have a $10 minimum for using credit card.

I came here for the viral mochi ice cream, and it was pretty good! It isn't anything groundbreaking. It is exactly as you expect it to be. Since it is viral, it got crowded really quick, But the service was fast despite it. I would say, though, I feel the ice cream messed up the mochi texture a bit. I would opt to go for the cream cheese filling next time.

pretzels

It's not easy to find Asian style pretzels in the US, but I found them in Boston, in black sesame and pork floss & salted egg yolk flavors! And of course, I had to grab ALL the black sesame baked goods to try alongside. The staff even joked that they could tell I really love black sesame because I got so many lol. Located in the heart of Boston Chinatown, Golden Crust Bakery just opened this summer and has already gone viral for their super stretchy mochi ice cream. But don't sleep on their HUGE selection of freshly baked Asian-style breads and desserts, from salt bread and soft Euro bread (軟歐) to mango mochi, mini whole cakes, cream rolls, and so much more! I just wish I could smuggle all of them back to NYC... *Black Sesame Pretzel 黑芝麻鹼水包 Both pretzels were fresh out of the oven when I got them! It's softer and more spongy than a regular pretzel. The black sesame filling is nutty, slightly grainy, and not too sweet, almost like milk crumble (奶酥). *Salted Egg Yolk & Pork Floss Pretzel 鹹蛋黃肉鬆鹼水包 I loved the combo of savory pork floss and salted egg yolk. If I had to nitpick, I just wish the filling was spread more evenly instead of being concentrated on one side. *Black Sesame Bread 黑芝麻麵包 The bread is pillowy soft, light, and fluffy. The black sesame paste is evenly spread throughout, while the bread itself tastes like "piggy buns" (sesame bread rolls/豬仔包) I grew up getting from Cantonese bakeries. *Black Sesame Mini Mooncake 黑芝麻迷你月餅 They have mini mooncakes in different flavors for Mid-Autumn Festival! I was told these are all freshly baked in-house, with flavors like lotus paste, purple sweet potato (I regretted not getting this one), pineapple, and red bean.

Mango mochi

The mango mochi lived up to the hype!!! I got the mango mochi with coconut ice cream and butter biscuit crust and it was sooooo good! Loved the soft but chewy mochi and it paired so well with mango + coconut. Wish there were more and bigger pieces of mango but still good! At almost $8 per mochi, I think it was a decent size - good enough to share for 2 people, but can also be finished by 1!

Yum! We came here to try the fresh mochi balls and absolutely loved them! You can choose a filling of either ice cream or cream cheese, a fruit, and toppings and they wrap the filling in fresh stretchy mochi. I got one with mango and strawberry ice cream and butter biscuit crumbs on the outside. This was so so yummy and the texture of the stretchy chewy mochi was just perfect. The ice cream and mango added sweetness and I really liked the biscuit crumbs too which gave it a nice crunch. Overall this was surprisingly not too sweet or heavy even with the ice cream and they do pack in a lot in the mochi ball. I also got my sister a mochi with matcha cream cheese and strawberry to go and she loved it!

Strawberry mochi ice cream (topped with rice flour)

I saw videos of the mochi ice cream at Golden Crust Bakery and knew I had to stop by while I was in Boston's Chinatown! They have a variety of Chinese baked goods and pastries, but the mochi was what caught my attention. They have several flavors to choose from and make it fresh to order. I got the strawberry mochi with strawberry ice cream, topped with rice flour. It was fresh, chewy, and a fun sweet treat, especially since it's not something you see everywhere. It's $8 for one, so probably not something I'd get regularly, but I'd definitely come back to try some of their other pastries! There's no seating, but they have a small bar table in the front where you can stand and eat.

Mochi Strawberry Ice Cream with Strawberry Fruit and Butter Biscuit Topping

I'm so sad I couldn't visit this spot twice on my vacation because it was just that good the mochi was so chewy and soft that one of us thought it was cheese at first! I ordered the mochi ice cream on the right - it's Strawberry Fruit, Strawberry Ice Cream, and Butter Biscuit topping. I loved the butter biscuit topping, it was like having crumbled ice cream wafer cone on top. The bakery itself was small and a line of 5-7 people on Wednesday evening took about 15 min wait to receive my order (most people ordered the same mochi ice cream). I only saw stairs going down to the entrance, so it doesn't seem handicap accessible. There's one small counter to stand and eat at.

Japanese garlic salt bread

Spectacular new bakery that took over sweet waffles and boba space. I came after dinner on a weeknight and there was surprisingly still full shelves of pastries, bread, and cakes. Slightly on the pricier side, but so many options made it difficult to choose. I ended up getting the garlic bread salt bread, black sesame bun, and a taro mochi bun. They were all pretty good. The Japanese salt bread was light and fluffy, but different than the Korean style salt bread. The black sesame was filled with tons of black sesame paste. My favorite out of the bunch was the taro mochi as it mochi balls and the soft bread made a great combo together. I'll definitely have to come back to try out the other pastries. They also have mochi ice cream that I would love to get as well.

Bolo Bao and Salt Bread
Generous Y.

Stopped by because my girlfriend was craving salt bread suddenly. This happened to be one of the few spots offering it around Boston. Minimum of $10 needed for credit card usage. Typical Asian bakery interior with a small little window ledge that works as a place to eat. Nice service with the kids working a little bit (classic Asian things). Salt Bread - for what it's worth, this satisfied my girlfriend's cravings and did so the next day as well. I still think the trendy bread is interesting, but I suppose it is tasty as a buttery, salty indulgence. Fluffy on the inside with a perfect light crisp shell. Pineapple Bun - a traditional bolo bao but more of the Japanese melon pan style where the crust isn't super flaky and is flatter. Would prefer more of the traditional pineapple top as it has more flavor and texture!

Small little bakery on Hudson Ave in Chinatown. It's a little more upscale compared to the older traditional bakeries in the area. I saw the mochi on Instagram and knew I had to try it out. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of cream cheese so I got mango as my fruit with pistachio ice cream and rice flour. I don't think they make the ice cream in house, but the quality was pretty good. My total came to be roughly $8 after tax. There wasn't as much mango as I had hoped, but it was very sweet and I loved how soft the mochi wrapper was, with the cold ice cream a nice sweet complement especially during a Boston heat wave. After checking out I saw that they had a good variety of breads (think hot dog buns, scallion bread, pork floss, almond, taro, the usual) for a decent price. I also saw they had prepackaged mochi that I would try next time. Four mini ones were $6. I will return!

I came to try their viral house-made mochi ice cream. It was so so good and fresh! The workers are very friendly- be patient with them because it can get very busy and it's a small business! There are other cute pastries that I will definitely try sometime.

Very unethical bakery shop. They switched from no tip to automatically charge 8% tip off my credit card without my authorization.

This place also holds some good memories for me. It used to be our meetup spot when everyone would fly in from different places for onsite project meetings. I've also picked up cute souvenirs here for coworkers to commemorate those visits. The dining area is very clean, with tiled walls and a mix of rustic-looking furniture. I usually don't need breakfast beyond my London Fog. However, once a month, a colleague and I like to grab breakfast and catch up, I usually go with the Prosciutto & Parmesan Scrambled Egg Plate. It's a simple, protein-heavy meal with some carbs to keep us going through our long meeting days. Since it can be hard to step away and grab lunch during those meetings, having something filling beforehand is perfect. They serve breakfast items throughout the day, including shakshuka, along with sandwiches and plenty of pastries. There are so many pretty options, though I usually end up going for the walnut brownie. Overall Service: Service has been consistently excellent. The friendly interactions are a big part of why I enjoy starting my mornings here. It's a small thing, but it makes a difference.

I've been drooling over the passion fruit krembo and the pear tart so I had to give them a try as well. Pear tart- absolutely perfect, so mellow and sweet and I loved the poached pear in the middle! Passionfruit krembo- honestly stronger on the coconut and meringue flavor than on the passion fruit? Tastes almost like a lemon meringue tart to me. Orange blossom latte- frankly didn't get any flavor of orange blossom in the latte, until it melted totally I could taste it a little in the coffee. The vanilla was also really light. It's a pretty unadulterated coffee (as is typical for a cold brew) and I kinda like my coffee sweet and creamy, so I was not too impressed on a first taste. But once it melted I liked it a lot more. Probably will stick with black sesame next time. Note- they serve their pastries glued with sugar (?) on a cardboard round. Im not too sure how to eat it like this so I ended up prying them off the round.

My friends and I ordered from different spots. I got a sashimi bowl from Gogo ya! It was good and a nice serving size. The fish was fresh and some good toppings. My husband had their sushi tacos and a roll and really liked them too. I had a cucumber cooler that was way too sweet for my taste. I had to water it down to drink it. Perhaps there was a mistake when it was made because I can't imagine they would it this way otherwise. The place is very clean and nice diversity of options. I think the restaurants could do a better job labelling their menus for diets (vegan, vegetarian, GF, etc). In addition, it was weird that to pick up my food, there wasn't some kind of text system or beeper. You just had to stay around and they would just call up orders. This would be very confusing when the place gets busier and noisier. There was water available at the end of the main bar but it wasn't well marked and I had to go walk around to find it. They should also have some kind of areas with napkins and silverware. So my conclusion is good food but still needs some work for the rest.

The staff was super nice, and patient, as I decided on which 6 donuts to get. The stars of the show were the Boston crème and the cake batter. Yum!! You could tell how fresh they were. There was a perfect amount of filling where it wasn't soggy or too dry. I definitely recommend bringing these somewhere where a group of people can split them. They are definitely on the bigger side and it's more fun to try many flavors in good company :)

I noticed that the sandwiches are premade from the day before and stored in their fridge. Not sure why anyone would order a sandwich there but seeing that makes me less inclined to try. I ordered half a dozen donuts: vanilla glaze, strawberry sprinkles, Boston crème, peach jam, salted toffee, and smores Overall I was surprised at how tough and dense the donuts were. It was like that across the board so maybe it was the dough for the day. My brother said he's had it twice before where it was much better than this time. I was also surprised at how sticky the glazes/coats were. Maybe I'm too used to the hardened Dunkin frosting. Dryer exteriors are less messy to eat, just saying. Vanilla glaze was basic and solid. Strawberry sprinkles has a stronger strawberry flavor than Dunkin but part me actually prefers the Dunkin candy-like flavor. Salted toffee was a bit too sweet for me but it did taste good. I'll eat it in moderation. Boston crème and smores are actually quite similar with the chocolate exterior and the creamy interior. I still went for the smores since it's a limited time flavor for the month of August (that's how they get at you). I ended up liking the Boston crème more because of the stronger and darker chocolate exterior. I also like how the interior is smoother and less sweet. I get that the smores interior is made with marshmallow fluff which would affect the sweetness and texture, but at the same time it didn't deliver what I would expect from a smores - gooey sticky airy texture. The outside mini marshmallows and graham cracker dust wasn't additive. Peach jam tasted a bit like medicine and too sweet + heavy. Overall this place wasn't bad but it certainly had disappointing parts. I don't see myself actively choosing to eat this. I might change my mind after someone makes me try it again and it tastes good.
