Ho Yuen Bakery is located in Chinatown and not too far from the main entrance of Chinatown. My husband and I decided to walk in this past Saturday, around 10:40 am. After looking at everything in the displace case, I ended up purchasing: Egg Tart, $1.80, prior to tax- The size of this egg tart was pretty big for the price and it was delicious. Loved the eggy flavor and the delicate tart shell. Would buy this egg tart again from this bakery. Taro Cake- Similar to turnip cakes that you would get at dim sum restaurants, but this is made with taro. My husband actually pan fried this at home to get it nice and crispy, which made it even better. Egg Roll- Inside was pork and vegetables (cabbage was in for sure). I didn't have any but my husband did (he was getting hungry) and thought it was good but a bit greasy. --------------------------------- (Total= $6.00) This place is CASH ONLY. The employees speak both Cantonese and English so you shouldn't have any trouble ordering items (pointing also works just fine for those who may not be able to speak Cantonese). There is a mix of dim sum items and baked goods here. Quite a large selection of baked goods actually. I really liked this bakery and would come back here.

Most recently came to get a mooncake for the mid autumn festival and decided to try out the pineapple one. The service is always quick as they ask what you want even before you decide what to get. The outside skin is thin and the pineapple paste is thick and sweet. Overall, a great bakery to stop by and remember to bring cash!

The cute Buddha cookie, Chinese wife cake & sponge cake were all very dry. The cookie tasted chalky & stale, wife cake had a thick tough crust with a tasteless, pasty nearly non-existent filling & the sponge cake was fluffy but crumbly. Probably the worst Chinese bakery experience I've ever had- a massive disappointment :(

This is one of the few old school chinese bakeries left in Boston's Chinatown. If you haven't tried this place yet, be sure you hit them up and support them before they disappear (hope not). Unlike the newer style bakeries, you'll find older generation workers here and baked goods prepared just like they did 20 years ago. You won't see flashy ordering kiosks or specialty drinks or anything like that. It's just good 'ole baked pastries the way it was when you were a child. Pricing is good, taste is good and service is mom and pop style. Good selection. Place does not look fancy at all, so don't expect to add any decor shots in your instagram from here.

Was visiting Boston and had a craving for Chinese egg tarts, but the ones with the flaky shell...not the cookie shell type. And while we were at it, their sesame balls (with black bean paste filling) looked good....and big too! So, we went ahead and ordered one of each to take away.....since they are take out only. Mmm mmm mmmmmmm, the egg tarts were a bit sweet, but that silky smooth egg custard filling in that wonderful flaky shell was heaven. The sesame ball was very good too.....with that perfect light crunch on the outside, nice chewy outside with that lovely, and not too sweet, black bean filling......really made my day....especially after our dim sum lunch around the corner. The only thing I wished was that they were hot and fresh out of the oven or fryer, and that would have made this the most perfect day :) Unfortunately, the egg tarts and sesame balls had been out a while and had cooled. Not a problem.....still enjoyed them anyway. In fact, we were so fast to scoff them all down that I forgot to take pictures....oh well, too late :(

I was in dire need of an egg tart after getting a hair cut in the neighborhood and after checking out Mei Sum, which only sold 6 or so egg tarts in a box, I found Ho Yuen a few steps down. Bonus points for the menu with both English and Chinese taped to the counter, as well as for the prices - $1.50 per egg tart! The egg tart was plenty tasty, not too sweet, wonderful flaky crust, but very, very greasy on the bottom. One was enough for me. I'd come back to try the other pastries and bao and moon cakes. The service was ... distracted. Two of the three women mixed up the change for two separate customers' orders and started squabbling loudly, ignoring me and one other customer standing there. Finally, the third woman, a lovely older lady who reminded me of my grandma, chuckled at them arguing and finally asked me what I wanted.

The sweets are always very tempting, as everything in the display case looks amazing! This is really a grab and go spot, so make sure to know what you want and order quickly, especially if there is a line. The service isn't always the best, but that's fine by me, given it's not a sit down restaurant. It's also pretty bare bones in terms of decor. Overall, a great place to grab a quick snack if you're walking around Chinatown.
The search for egg custard in Chinatown is like finding a needle in the haystack. Thank you to the Yelp reviewers and for their reviews. Makes traveling to new cities and navigating around much easier. Ho Yuen Bakery is one of those original Chinese bakeries far and few standing in Boston. The baker had just brought out piping hot egg custard. Patron ordered 4 to go. I also got 4 as well for they will put in box for you. Also got the shrimp chips. If you are in the neighborhood Ho Yuen Bakery is the place to get your 'dan tat'. Believe me they are so worth it. Creamy like crème brûlée richness filling and flakey n crispy pastry shell. I ate two at the hotel. Staff is friendly and helpful when figuring which pastries to try out. There are no chairs and tables to sit and eat here. Will be back again the next time I am in the neighborhood. read more
I haven't been to Ho Yuen Bakery in quite some time & not much has changed. I used to come here all the time growing up with my grandmother to pick up some baos & my favorite, white sugar sponge cake! So you know I had to grab some white sugar sponge cake, curry beef bao, and other baos while I was in Chinatown the other day. They are still cash only! Make sure to bring some cash ;) I'm honestly not much of a bao person but I do love me some white sugar sponge cake. Tastes exactly how I remembered it! Very nostalgic & yummy. Will for sure be stopping by more often!! read more

Spent the day in Boston with family. I was told this is the bakery for all things savory and sweet. We bought a little bit of everything including a couple dozens of BBQ pork buns (which happened to be just freshly baked before we walked in) to take back to our friends and family in Lowell. The ladies running the front of the house weren't exactly the friendliest but I think it's because they want to get everyone in and out. Judging from the foot traffic we witnessed during our short 10 minutes in the shop on a weekday, I have a feeling this bakery gets really packed on weekends and Asian holidays. One last thing to note, this joint is located in the center of Chinatown with many other competing Asian bakeries on the same corridor. I would suggest researching a bit to better help select the right spot for your fix. read more

cute spot in boston chinatown, quick service, and yummy pastries. in our little tour of chinatown, we wanted to stop into multiple places and try as many little things as possible. we split a small green tea moon cake and an egg tart. so delectable and cheap. bring your cash! read more

BEST curry beef bread ever!! The curry filling is amazing and the bread is soft and sweet. $1.80 for the curry bread as of July 2022. The pineapple coconut buns are also the softest breads ever! I love the pineapple cookie crust on top of the soft bread read more
There are so many Chinese bakeries just foot steps away from Ho Yuen; however, this is THE bakery to stumble upon. You can't go wrong with anything here. Want something sweet? Savory? You got it! Stop by and grab a box of assorted bakeries to keep your tummy happy! I recommend: the pineapple buns, the hot dog buns and (my fav) the bbq pork buns (fresh, soft, springy, milky, just the right amount of sweet earthiness until you hit the jackpot bbq pork in the middle, which is phenomenal, savory and mouth watering.) read more

Ho Yuen is staple bun shop in chinatown that sells an assortment of chinese buns and pastries. Their crown jewel is their baked pork bun. It is filled with plenty of pork and the bread is the perfect level of soft without falling apart. They are cash only and there isn't much parking around in the area. I would highly recommend coming via public transit or walking. They have no seating area and you'll spend about 3 minutes tops inside. They are efficient at packing your order and speak a good amount of English. Note that they don't call out all the items that include meat, for example, their scallion buns include bits of bacon. Overall, would advise visiting and ensuring that you have cash on hand as they are a cash only business. read more
Review for lao po bing /old wife cake（老婆餅） only: Bit oily, not as light and flakey as those from Taiwan. $2 each. Also coconuty with sesame seeds. Not what I expected. They also sell typical baked buns, mooncake, etc but surprisingly pricier (as compared to Oakland or even SF Chinatown). Would not recommend getting this. read more

Truly a gem in the heart of Boston! I visited here everyday of my visit. The smell of fresh baked goodies will slap you silly once you open the door. So many options! The lineup is so fire! The price points are the cherries on top. Everything is basically under $2 and feel like each piece was created by grandma's secret daily recipe. I would recommend the following: the curry beef bun, pineapple bun, sticky rice cake, and the egg tart. Everything was out of this world! I'm a huge anti-dry food enthusiast and I can say that everything was moist, fluffy, and fresh! No matter what time of the day I came, everything seemed to taste fresh. Located in Chinatown, about 8 minutes from the subway stop. No indoor seating. Masks highly preferred. read more
No-frills cantonese speaking bakeries. I knew it was gonna be legit from the moment I saw the aesthetic and tried the pineapple bun for $1.30....from all my years of growing up eating this in New York City and trying different places in Boston, this is by far the best I've had. The bread was fluffy like no other (the stringy type of fluffy) and paired perfectly with the crispy exterior. The flavor was milky and fragrant. Had to give this 5 stars. read more
Super cute shop with delicious treats for every sweet tooth from just wanting a simple plain sponge cake to a sweet and savory pastry. We were able to get a little bit of everything between red bean pastry to bread to take home for the next few days. They have everything properly labeled and prices vary but well worth the quality! They also offer milk teas and other drinks. The shop is kind of small so I'd recommend taking to go especially if you're a larger party. read more
Best thing I had was the lo po bing (wife cake/ melon cake). You don't need to splurge on the melon cake with egg yolk. The original is what you want. It might be the best wife cake I've ever had. It's a smaller circumference but it's thicker than others. It is flakey on the outside with soft, sweet, and slightly crunchy filling. MUST GET. Other wife cakes I've had don't prioritize the filling. This place does. Sugar, shredded coconut, candied melon, sesame seeds, butter all in a flakey shell. The baked beef bun was good too. The filling is tasty and savory. Also, as a tip, know what you want to order before you go. If not, you'll be met with rude remarks in Chinese and lots of impatience from the staff. I speak Chinese, so I understood everything they were saying aloud or muttering under their breath. FIVE STARS FOR THE WIFE CAKE/MELON CAKE. Outstanding. Best you'll find anywhere. I cannot stress this enough. read more
