I'm quite curious about the relationship between the three bakeries in Chinatown (Corner/Top/Taiwan). Although their names seem to have nothing to do with each other, they share paper bags and some products. Are they sister shops run by the same team? Egg Tart蛋撻: Since there was no insulated box, it was cold, which is a shame compared to Corner Cafe. The egg and milk aromas were masked, but there was a slight eggy smell. Portuguese Egg Tart葡撻: Although it was also cold, I preferred the baking. It had a thin crust, and the filling was still smooth and delicate, with a richer egg, milk, and sweet flavor. Butter Bun奶香包: The best product, but I forgot to take a picture... I unexpectedly encountered "Little Swell bread微波麵包," something that has disappeared in China for a long time. It was exactly the soft and moist texture I remembered, and the milk, butter, and salt flavors were even stronger. read more

I've been here 5 times and the last 3 times there's an issue with my order. I spend over $10 each time and they tell me no I need to buy more. Today she says I need 6 items. Solid bakery in Boston's Chinatown. Would rate it a 3.5. Everything is individually packaged so it's nice being able to try a selection of pastries. They've gotten expensive over the years (now it's about $4-5 for a bun) and the quality can be hit or miss. Some things are fantastic such as their milk bread loaves or taro buns. Other items are just okay such as their raisin coconut bread & bolo baos. Those tend to be dry & flavorless. Like many other Chinatown businesses they require a $10 minimum to pay with card, so definitely more convenient to bring cash. read more

For the last year I have been on a mission to try all the bakeries in Boston Chinatown. I've landed on the only one worth writing about. If you're old school and only want traditional pastries this is not the place for you. This IS the place for you if you're looking for fresh, high quality and unique flavors - Chinese buns with a modernized twist. I recommend the swirled taro buns, pineapple bun (with mochi!), matcha red bean, scallion and hot dog bun, butterscotch bun, or any of their bread loaves. There is such a large variety of offerings that I have yet to try everything. They're very nice and usually have someone at the register who speaks English. Highly recommend a visit. read more

I've been going to top bread for years now for the great quality of food, even driving an hr just to get it. But unfortunately, my most recent visit completely changed how I feel about this place, and I won't be returning due to the shockingly poor customer service. While checking out, I placed my tray on a surface where I had seen other trays before, unaware that it was actually a fridge someone was trying to access. One of the staff members immediately screamed at me in a high pitched tone, "AH AH AH!"--as if I were an animal. I quickly apologized, saying, "I'm so sorry!" But instead of accepting it, she mocked me by repeating "Yeah, SORRY" in a sarcastic voice. I was stunned by how aggressive and demeaning her tone was over such a minor, and honest mistake. At the time, I still went through with the purchase, but in hindsight, I regret it. No customer--or human being--should be spoken to like that. It's incredibly disappointing, especially because I used to love this bakery. This place reminds me of the 85C degree bakery chain. They have very authentic Taiwanese bread/pastries that I personally like better than the 85C degree selections. I got the pineapple bun that had mochi stuffing inside which is super hard to find! Usually Asian bakeries just sell plain pineapple bun with no stuffing inside. (Also just a side note pineapple bun has no pineapple, it's just referring to its looks). We also got the ham & corn toast, beef sandwich, and the wife cake. We loved every pastries we got. I also love how they sell the wife cake in small bite sizes. It's very addicting... I'll have to come back every time I'm in Boston. This is probably the best Asian bakery in Chinatown. Honestly a go to for all my Chinatown bakery cravings! Top Bread has yet to disappoint. I feel like the variety and quality of all their products is seriously unmatched in the area, but honestly you can't go wrong with most of the bakeries in Chinatown. I love their pineapple buns ( the ones stuffed with pork floss and mochi and other goodies are to die for ) and their egg tarts are some of the best in the area. I usually stock up wirh a bunch of their products over the weekend if I go and they last me a few days - nothing you can't pop in the microwave and have them taste like new again! This place is a scam. They will not give receipts and they up charge everything at the counter. I got 4 things and I estimated that everything I got will cost $15 max. I got to the counter and they told me my card won't work unless I get 2 more things. It made no sense, but I'd just gotten out of the doctors office and I needed something quick to eat on the T. I got 2 of the cheapest buns I could find, $2.6 each, and I brought it to checkout. She said it was $22.55 and I was stunned. Every time I go to Chinatown this place is a bakery I always stop by. Their Portuguese and egg tarts are delicious. Their birthday cakes are to die for. They have fresh fruit and aren't sweet like other places. The ladies at the register are always nice and willing to help. The bakery is always busy but the line moves pretty quick. Top Bread is right next door to Hong Kong Eatery. After our meal there, we decided to check it out. We were looking for a snack to have later in the evening. When we entered, the lady working at the register greeted us. Then she let us be so that we could browse and decided what to try. My husband wasn't feeling very adventurous. As a result, we decided to try wife cakes. We had never heard of wife cakes. My husband, after reading the ingredients, decided he wanted to try them. The ingredients are simple: sugar, rice flour, butter. Wife cakes are Cantonese in origin. Some have fillings in them such as winter melon, almond paste and sesame and are seasoned with 5 spice powder. The ones we tried didn't have any filling. We enjoyed them, for the most part. One that I tried had a mealy texture in part of it. The others had a softer, more pleasant mouth feel. They have many different pastries available here. Many are very attractive looking. We were surprised to see tiramisu here. My husband said to wait until we were in The North End to get some of that (which we did and is another review). Do stop in if you are in the neighborhood. Top Bread has a wide selection at reasonable prices, though perhaps not the most competitive in Chinatown. I was surprised to find fluffy Japanese style cheese cake, something I rarely see in American based bakeries. I grabbed a taro bun - absolutely loved it. The sponge like pull apart bread was filled with a sweet taro paste and baked until golden brown. As a result, probably easier for non-Chinese speakers to navigate. The egg tart has a pastry that is more shortbread style and the filling was a little too sweet for my taste. It's a solid option, but doesn't take the crown. I was surprised that the hot dog bun has ketchup! In retrospect, it would seem to be an obvious inclusion, but I've never had a hot dog bun with that. Came here with the mission to satisfy my friend's "Asian dessert" craving. Nothing fit the bill better than a red bean bun. Some of the other Chinatown bakeries Ive visited often run out of options unless you go early in the morning. I bought 4 breads and 2 egg tarts for a total of $13.70, and most of the buns and breads seem to be priced at around $3. I request either give me a chestnut cake or money back but the staff so rude and arguing trying to blame everything else but themselves. First they can't answer my questions second they can't do anything about it why can't they tell the manager or the owner so they can do something about it instead of arguing. Most things are individually wrapped and labeled in both Chinese and English which is really nice. I no longer have to second guess if I should try an item. I stopped in recently to grab a small pre-made cake for beau's birthday. This section is not labeled and a do not touch area, so you would need to ask one of the ladies for some assistance. There is also a sign that states this as well. We love Chinese sponge cake, so this was a hit! Light, super soft, fluffy, and just the perfect amount of fruit toppings and sweetness. I also grabbed some hot dog and coconut buns for my mother-in-law. They were really delicious! The hot dogs buns were not the typical ones you find at surroundings bakeries. It was topped off with cheese, garlic and herbs. Similar to those you find at Tous les Jours and Paris Baguette at H-Mart. The coconut bun had raisins in it, which was yum! read more

If you added an "S", changed an "a" to an "e", and put an "ing" on the end, then Top Bread would become my #1 piece of advice to everyone, everywhere in the world: Stop Breeding. Top Bread is the least submissive bakery in Massachusetts, hence the name. It's right in the heart of Boston's glorious, tiny Chinatown, which may not be as big or as famous as the equivalents in NYC and SF, but is certainly one of the highlights of Beantown. And for all of those who have had really bad stuff from some Asian bakeries, I've beantown that road before as well, and this place is not going to disappoint you. What to get: Wife Cakes. Richard Nixon may not have liked "Tape Bread", boats are better bought from "Tarp Bread", Yelp reviews are more prevalent for "Typo Bread" and Ginger Rogers is more likely to frequent "Tap Bread", however those places all pale in comparison to Top Bread. And they're much more trustworthy and less creepy than the notorious "Just-The-Tip Bread." I recommend you try their specialty, which are the "Wife Cakes" that they have hundreds of sitting on top of the large display where all the other cakes are. They are powdery and chalky, and one girl that I know doesn't like them at all... however another girl I know thinks they are absolutely divine, and so do I. I'm not sure why they are so addictive, but they are strangely impossible to stop eating. I wonder what it is that goes into them, or why my body starts going into convulsions when I don't have them for awhile. Anyway, even though some of their other products might not be up to the same lofty standard, Top Bread easily scores a 5 for the Wife Cakes alone, and I adore them to an insane degree. Speaking of an insane degree, you should see what these people at Harvard and MIT are doing. Or what I did at Oxford, come to think of it. The girls in this bakery will giggle and whisper about you in a language you may not understand. For me, that kind of turns me on, so I don't mind. I think one of them must have a crush on me, or more likely, think I look horrendously ugly or utterly bizarre. They were the ones that told me to try the wife cakes, and for that, I will be eternally grateful. You may even say that they "wifed me," if you want to be technical about it. While you're in Boston's Chinatown, also try an avocado bubble tea (mixed with the fresh fruit of your choice) from New Dong (love the name) next door, as well as something with Lychee from the Juice Bar, and some Egg Puffs from the extremely imaginatively-named "Egg Puffs." I am sure I will try Wife Cakes from other places, but I doubt any will ever Top Top. And as the legend goes, once you Pop Top, you can't Stop. There's no circus in here (it's not a very Big Top), and it's not militaristic (it's not a Tank Top), but I tip my proverbial mercury-laden madness-inducing Top Hat to this marvellous bakery. read more

I've always loved this bakery. Even thought they are a bit pricy. But on our last trip I found some items I've purchased somewhat stale. Also I never really noticed this before but when I paid with a credit card they charged me over $1.50 extra. When I questioned them they claim it's for tax reasons. Nowhere in their store mentions this. They should give customers a heads up before automatically adding it to their order. Also my order was around $13.
