Top Bread - Bakeries Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

Top Bread is one of my go to bakeries in Chinatown. It has an assortment of sweet and savory baked goods. The store ambience is very clean, not super big, air conditioned with glass display cases of all the baked good. The cakes are beautifully presented with fruits on top and the presentation for all the goods is nice. They have a $10 minimum for using credit cards so keep that in mind when going. read more

Food was tasty, I got a garlic cheese baguette and a taro and walnut bun. Service was good, paid very quickly - make sure to bring enough cash! The place itself was very pretty and clean, lots of soft colors and it smelled great. read more

Very tasty and soft pastry. Not overly sweet just right. Had some very unique desserts and designs

The egg custard tarts here were phenomenal, flaky and creamy. We came here at around 7pm at night and there were barely any breads left. However, I did enjoy the red bean paste bread. I would equate this as similar to a very small Paris Baguette, but perhaps without as much variety. The staff could have been friendlier when I asked them questions about what was inside various pastries. read more

This place has a lot of sweet pastries. I bought the natas, portuguese custard tarts. This was one of the few bakeries in the area that sells this dessert. It was not overly sweet so it was good. The crust was flaky and delicious. read more

Portuguese Egg Tart - Quite good. Right flakeyness. Filling is on the gooey-er side. Would definitely recommend. I could see these being top tier if you get them fresh. read more

I bought a mango moose cake the heart shaped one for a birthday. I should have chose a square or round one because that way you don't loose much of the portions. Other than that the cake was light and airy with fresh fruit. Their pastries are the same way and really delicious. They put some twists on the classic pastry/bao by adding an additional garnishment to the traditional pork or say pineapple bun. The deserts are presented nicely in the cases and they are all very nice and helpful with anything you need. read more

Their breads are extremely fluffy and aren't strong in flavor which is what I like in breads. Specifically, their egg tarts and milk bread is one of my favorites and I order a huge quantity each time I come. They never disappoint with their treats! read more

Honestly there's a lot of competition. But if I can just share 1 food item I believe that Top Bread is a winner for, it's their Portuguese egg tarts. It's always warm, not too much crust, pastry like crust that is flaky and buttery, and the custard is very moist and soft. Melts in your mouth. The other breads are meh and you can find cheaper else where in Chinatown. read more

A nice little bakery in the heart of Boston's Chinatown. It has all the Chinese brands that you would expect in a typical Chinese bakery. Make sure to come early in the day for freshly baked bread and cakes. read more

Oh my my, I was so surprised at how clean and organized this place was! This was such an improvement from when this used to be Bao Bao Bakery. All of the pastries here were lined up perfectly and majority of them has English translation of what the items were. Everything was beautifully displayed which can be dangerous for someone with a sweet tooth. Green Tea Mini Rolls- Fluffy little green Swiss roll. Not too sweet, not too bland. It was okay. Strawberry Mini Rolls- There were slices of strawberries inside the cream of these scrumptious rolls. Overall Service: There's definitely a language barrier but in the age where we mostly only use cards, I'm just happy there wasn't any struggles when they were using those debit/credit pad and the transaction was pretty quick. read more

Their egg tarts are too sweet for me. I found the crust to be pretty good. Flakey and not too greasy nor is it gummy from being under cooked. It's the same for the Portuguese tart. The custard itself is too sweet, but the crust a good consistency. Still hunting for the best egg tarts in Boston. I love love love their glutinous rice balls filled with mango, taro or coconut found in the cold case. It was always my favorite treat to eat as a kid and theseeeeeee are a killllller. Pass on their matcha red bean square loaf. Under baked, and giant holes throughout the loaf! Paid for lots of air. And I typically come here at night, probably near closing time ish (6?) and it always always always smells like cleaning product. It is such a turn off for me. read more

With so many bakeries in Chinatown, we decided to try this one since it sounded more unique than others. I was surprised by the different variations of buns they had in there. The typical dried pork bun was sprinkled with seaweed flakes and they had purple taro swirls on the top of their taro bun. They also had dried pork wrapped in seaweed and Portuguese egg tarts. The tarts aren't warmed up for you but it's kept warm enough in the compartment they're in. It gets pretty crowded in there but definitely did not regret coming to this bakery. I ended up getting the taro bun and Portuguese egg tart to go. The tart wasn't as crunchy as it should've been and the crust split from the egg part easily. However, it was decent for the most part. read more

Staff could be friendlier, buns are good tasting but not amazing. Pricing is standard for Chinatown. Buns here are never bad so it's a solid choice. read more

I love this place. They have a pretty good selection of desserts. If you wanna buy a cute desert that looks like a duck or mouse, here is the place to come. Their eggtarts were also alright. Everything is delicious. You really can't go wrong no matter what you choose. We had the green tea rolls and hot dog roll with coffee.

Though there are many different bakeries within a block from here, Top Bread is special. With COVID restrictions, everything is pre-packaged and super easy to grab and go and also get a drink. I think the selection here is more modernized and exciting, bringing together different traditional flavors with twists (like Cheese). Though you'll be paying a few more cents per item, it is definitely worth it! read more

BREEEAAAAAADDDDDDDD! You need some pork floss buns, perhaps some pineapple buns, or maybe even some egg tarts. Top Bread is among the handful of Chinese bakeries within the Chinatown area and is one of the newer ones that has opened up in the recent years. Once you step in, you'll realize that this one is different than the rest. Customers are greeted with a clean and bright store with the pastries all carefully laid out on pull out trays around the store. If you look carefully at the packaging of the pastries, you would notice that the names of two other bakeries are included, Great Taste Bakery and Corner Cafe Bakery. Although I am convinced that they are all owned by the same owners and are supplied by the same supplier, Top Bread seems to provide a better product. Price wise, it would also be ever so slightly above the other stores. However, what you receive is a product that's handled with care as to opposed to other bakeries such as Great Taste that pile everything up on plates with no regard to the pastries. Aside from the pastries, they also have whole cakes as well but I have not had the chance to try them yet. Also keep in mind that they started charging 25 cents for bags due to recent changes in Boston. Next time you're throwing an egg tart party, come by to Top Bread! read more

This is a fantastic little cake / pastry shop in China Town. I had probably walked past it several times but whenever in China town, the rush to get some good food from wherever you are going to totally blindsides everything else that is in the way. That's probably why I never saw this place before. I can go on and on about it but will try to keep this short and simple: - Amazing selection of cakes. Especially if you are throwing a party for the kids. Some of the cake designs made me laugh like a kid :) (pics attached) Hello Kitty!! - pastries and small treats are just as fun as the cakes. They focus a lot of cartoon characters. I bet they change them every month or so. Some of them are big hits - Angry bird anyone?! - They have assorted flavors of specialty breads - some fruit flavors I had never come across before; pear for example - They also have savory snacks, cookies, and many more yummy treats to take home and snack on (not too much maybe - keep check of those cals!) - The place is super neat and clean and clearly being very well managed. A total contrast from almost all places in the area (no matter how much we enjoy the food!) If you are in the area, don't miss upon this gem! read more

This new contender is easily my favorite bakery in Chinatown. It reminds me of my favorite "Western" bakery in Shanghai--ironically here, it's considered an Asian bakery. My affection for Top Bread simply comes from the fact that I love their bread--what better reason to love a bakery! I also appreciate that they're open bright and early with fresh bread that I can pick up on my way to work. They won't have everything yet first thing in the morning but luckily for me, one of my favorites, their deliciously fluffy hot dog bun with cheese, is pretty reliably ready by 7:30 am. I've also had their pork floss and laver bun, which is again, soft and fluffy, but the mayonnaise almost has a faint curry flavor. It's not bad, but a little unexpected and not my favorite. However, to their credit, pork floss buns in general can lean towards being dry and theirs is moist and flavorful. Top Bread has also reignited my love for egg tarts--especially their Portuguese egg tart (which has the brûlée-ing going on). Their egg tarts are consistently silky-smooth-melt-in-your-mouth-goodness inside a flaky, buttery crust (that also melts in your mouth!). YUM. If you've never tried an egg tart, this is a great place to fall in love with one. To be perfectly honest, I've had 5 egg tarts from here this week and it's only Wednesday. This may or may not be an indication that I'm in a little bit of a honeymoon period, but I have faith that Top Bread will stand the test of time. Recommendations: 1) Hot dog bun with cheese, 2) Portuguese egg tart, 3) Box of 4 little pastry balls filled with red bean paste and salted egg yolk read more

Top Bread - They're especially fresh around 4:30 pm--I'm sure they are at other times too but that's when I usually stop by on my way home. - Bakeries Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

I visit Top Bread pretty much every time I go to Chinatown and leave with their Pork Floss Cakes and Hong Kong Style Egg Tarts. These are arguably the closest I've come to the versions I've had the last time I was in China. Everything is also super cheap. Four egg tarts and a small box of pork floss cakes costs me about $12. They also have a really great variety of pork floss buns and house made cakes. Definitely worth stopping by! read more

Top Bread is a small, little bakery located across of another Chinese bakery in Boston's Chinatown. We came here on a cold blustery night to taste what Boston had to offer- delicious egg tarts! From all the egg tarts I've had (specifically NYC made ones), Top Bread definitely won the best taste test. Like all Chinese bakeries, the pastries are either inside plastic self-serve displays or sitting on top of the glass cases in plastic to-go containers. There, however, is a hand-written sign for the egg tarts in which the cashier will get the egg tarts for you. We got the almond cookies on top shelf and the pack of mini hotdog buns and paid less than $5. It was definitely worth it so we returned another night for their house-made pineapple cakes which also hit the spot. As usual, the ladies working there were nice even when it was almost closing shop. Will be back another time for some sweets. Accepts cash only. No bathrooms. Open decently late. read more

My review is based on them having these out-of-this world desserts that are similar, but not identical to mochi. They're small, round, dusted with coconut on the outside, and have -- wait for it -- mango filling on the inside. The only other place I've found this dessert made fresh like this is in NYC. Morever, the ones here have some chunks of mango too. Score! These were relatively small but they came in fours for $4. I popped into at least six other bakeries in Boston and didn't find these anywhere else. And believe me, I know exactly what I'm looking for. So the next time I'm back in Boston's Chinatown, Top Bread is where I'm make a beeline for to satisfy this craving. read more

This rating may go up if I return to buy any of their cute mini cakes. They have far more mini cake selections than any other Chinatown bakery I have seen. I originally came to try the taro bun that I saw a picture of, but by 4pm on a Sunday they were all sold out :( $10 minimum for credit cards, as mentioned in the tips. A little pricier than other bakeries, but also more brightly lit. The packaging said "Great Taste Bakery" so maybe the two are affiliated. I asked for their hours, and was told 6:30am-9:30pm. I don't know if this is every day and I couldn't really ask for clarification because of the language barrier. I saw some signage in English, but not all of the cases are marked. read more

Omg their egg tart melted in my mouth. I love the flicky crust, so I'll be back for more next time. So much non fatty pork meat in the bbq pork bun. I love this place. But have to get there early or things will mostly be gone by the afternoon :( read more

A cute addition to Chinatown, although their buns are on the pricier side for the area. Average price for a roll was $1.50+ That being said, the buns I got were lovely and delicious. I enjoyed seeing the creative flavors, which give a twist on traditional Chinese fillings. I got the taro bun, which had a beautiful spiral sugar crust on top (see photo). The filling was sweet taro, and there was a good filling to bread ratio. I also tried the bacon and cheese bread. And OMG I actually tasted the bacon and cheese?! I really like strong flavors (not what you expect of an Asian woman) so I was prepared for disappointment, but this bread was the perfect amount of salty, cheesy, and bacon-y! I devoured it quite happily. :P I was more pleased with my orders here than at Ho Yuen Bakery, which is comparable in price and overall ambience. All in all, this place is definitely worth a visit. I look forward to trying the cakes! UPDATE: I went back today to try the Okonomiyaki bread. This is a Japanese-inspired flavor with seafood flakes on the outside and a cabbage-mayo filling. I really enjoyed it! There was a lot of flavor, and the cabbage added a nice crunch. Beware that the seafood flavor is strong. ;P However, if you're into that, definitely try this for a savory snack or lunch! read more

Finally a bakery in Chinatown that is somewhat comparable to bakeries in SoCal. Clean, bright, and fresh. The breads are fresh and individually packaged. There are also little cakes and pastries. The bbq pork had a good portion of meat to bread. The bread was very soft and moist. The chocolate pudding bread was very tasty and not too sweet. I also tried the coconut twisty bread and taro bread later. They didn't taste as good, but I don't know if it was because it was not consumed right away. The taro bread did not have enough filling in my opinion. All the individual breads were about $1 so yay! Cons: Not all the breads were labeled and some were only in Chinese. The paper they bake the breads on don't come off very easily, so you take off a good portion of bread.. read more

I was in town visiting and dying for some type of Asian pastry. Every single bakery, in Boston's Chinatown, either had a bad odor/stench of looked really dirty that I had to walk out right when I walked in. However, I walked into this bakery and it was clean, well kept, and the staff was friendly. We were there around 7 on a Sunday and mostly everything was already gone. So, I had very little to pick from.... I chose the egg custard tart and sponge log cake filled with fresh fruit and whipping cream. I usually don't like egg custard tarts, but this was delish! The crust was crispy and had the perfect texture. The custard had great consistency and wasn't too sweet, just perfect!!! The sponge log cake was so good. Probably the best that I've ever had. The sponge cake was very light but held everything together. The whip cream was nice, light, and had the light touch of sweetness. The fruit...there was strawberry, mango, and honey dew. I didn't like the honey dew in it, but it was it terrible. My friend got the taro mochi and he thought it was pretty good. I would definitely go back to get the sponge cake!!!! read more

If you're not familiar w/Asian bakery goods they are different from your typical chocolate frosted cakes. They are usually made with rice flour and are fluffy & less sweet in taste & less dense in texture. There usually aren't thick frostings either. You do have to guess as to what some of the items are in the store, not many descriptive signs. There are a variety of cute cupcake looking cakes & a selection of savory baked goods & whole cakes. It's pretty much a serve yourself shop, there are trays to hold your selection and when you're done, it's taken to the cashier. Nice little selection of desserts. I picked the package of 8 fruit rolled cakes ~$4, also picked a single striped cream cake & an almond cream pineapple shaped cake for a total of $8.00 Cash. The rolled cakes I tried are comparable to angel food cake. Lite & fluffy, delicate cream filling, not too sweet with fresh fruit. Though I would love to try everything at once, it's going to have to wait! read more

This place has become one of my favorite Chinatown bakeries! It happens to be the closest to my workplace, so I come here often, and I've sampled a lot of their pastries, which are always fresh and so tasty. The char siu buns are light, airy, and generous with the pork. The pork sung and ham rolls are wonderful. Their egg tarts are delicate and flaky. The sesame twist bread hits just the right note when it comes to sweetness. I love the taro paste in their taro buns, though they could distribute the taro more evenly. My favorite item here though, which you might miss completely without looking for them, are the chocolate almond shortbread cookies, which are in plastic containers on top of the display cases. They're addictive, and I guarantee you can't eat just one. I've noticed that prices have gone up slightly since the pandemic, but I think that's a small price to pay to support a local business that keeps me well-fed at work. Love this place! read more

I think their stuff is alright. My friends like their mini cakes and I did not get the chance to try enough to know but I think they are OK. It is a bit complicated to get cakes, apparently customers will need to point out what they want to the worker. Problem is, worker thought I was trying to get cakes on my own so she rushed to stand in front of me and btw she stepped on my foot without apologizing. I looked at her and said ow but of course, still not apology. When asking what is inside the cake, the worker is unable to speak english and when she could, she stated the obvious that a cake had strawberry. Like yes I see the strawberry but what else is in it? smh... Place is kind of small and i think having to pull out the breads to get it gets tricky when the store is packed. Not my type of place I will be going often. Then again i dont think I will come back since I do not know what I am buying. read more

Whenever I visit Boston, I always make sure to visit Top Bread before noon before some items start to run out. The selection is pretty good, and the price is affordable. I love the coffee bun, milk bun, pudding bun, hot dog and chives, and chocolate almond bun; they're absolutely delicious. I usually buy 8-10 baked goods to bring back to Maine, leave two that I want to eat within the next two days out in room temperature, and store the rest in the fridge. The bread holds up pretty well; I've never gotten any moldy bread even after leaving them in the fridge for almost two weeks. I've also tried Top Bread's bubble tea, and it's okay. Not bad but also nothing to write home about. The staff here speaks some English, so non-Chinese speakers rest assured. read more
