Easily our favorite restaurant in Berkeley after living here for 5 years. Perfect spot for a date night or a dinner out with kids. The service is always so warm and accommodating. The vibe is great, especially on the large outdoor patio (which has great heating). And the food is incredibly good, across the board. We love that the menu changes seasonally, all with local, fresh local ingredients. The new chef has also added some fantastic new items to the menu. Gather hosted a large business event for us with a pre-fixe menu and did especially well at hosting us. Beautiful place with live plants streaming off the headers over the kitchen. Cocktails were great and food was on point. Favorite dish of the night was the Spicy Tomato Pizza as the flavors were amazing. I've gone to Gather several times as it is a great meal spot with friends for different occasions such as a reunion and birthday. It is spacious, has great decorations, and their food is filling. The pizzas and burgers are unique and are very memorable. Out of many burgers I've had in my entire life, this is one of my favorite! The outside seating area is heated and looks gorgeous while the inside area is cozy and has a wooden feel. When I came for Brunch, there was a live band playing! They sounded gorgeous and was an amazing addition to my meal! Live music is definitely a perk of this restaurant that not many downtown restaurants have. It is a minute walk from the BART station, parking is street only which is highly limiting, and there is a cake cutting fee if you are looking to celebrate. read more

The menu has a great variety. Everything we tasted was delicious. We had the option to sit inside or outside and we chose indoors. Our order was taken quickly and the food came reasonably quickly. Our meal at Gather was one of my favorites so far in Berkeley. We were looking for something a little more upscale than most of the places near the downtown station and this spot feels like it would fit in with the nice places we enjoy in SF, without being super high end and unaffordable. The food was great - controversial take but this might actually be my favorite pizza in this neighborhood! We were a bit let down by the squash appetizer but I'm not sure what wasn't landing for us in hindsight - it was beautiful on the plate. The roast chicken came recommended and was outstanding! Also a nice wine list and maybe most importantly - really friendly, attentive, courteous staff who made our visit feel extra nice. The patio has a beautiful, cozy atmosphere and I think we'll be back for another meal before the holidays. This is a wonderful place to get together with friends. read more

We landed on The Last Straw and a Berkeley Breeze for our cocktails, and we had the Marin Sun Farms Burger (not pictured) along with the Marin Sun Farms Meatballs and Caesar Salad. Everything was fresh and delicious. The patio (and interior) was gorgeous and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately, service was very slow and we did not have a chance to order another round of drinks, but that was the only downside we experienced. When i arrived to the restaurant we were greeted by the hostess in a condescending / passive aggressive manner. after giving her my number of guests for a table which was 4, she hesitated to find us seating with multiple empty tables which could more than definitely seat my whole party. After finally being seated we sat down and glanced at the menu. We did not find the food to be appetizing or appealing to us to which we decided to exit. Upon exiting we were greeted by the hostess again with laughter and contempt as if we did not belong.I understand this is a more opulent area but personally everyone should be treated with equality and not be looked down upon no matter who you are. Having read so many good reviews about the restaurant, I took my wife here for our 1 year wedding anniversary. We brought wine with us anticipating a romantic dinner. Instead, we were rushed through service by a nice, but ineffective server who sent out the food so rapidly that we barely ate 2 bites of our salad before our pizza and entres arrived...together. I was frustrated and asked him to take the pizza and mains back to the kitchen to keep them warm since we had barely had a chance to taste our salads or even have our wine opened. We deceided then and there to cancel the rest of the meal, pay for our salads, and go somewhere enjoyable to eat. The few bites of food we had were decent but nothing special, so we didn't feel like we were missing out on anything by leaving. Food was not great. Salad tasted like it only had anchovy paste in it definitely the worst Caesar salad ever. Corn soup tasted burnt! Mussels were cooked well but barely any sauce. Best thing hands down was the crudo and the fried zucchini and beans service was terrible we sat at table for 10 minutes while our server cleared tables and tended to other tables. She was very hard to find after we got our food. We wanted to order another drink each but it took so long we're just going to leave. We had full plates of food she didn't offer to even give us any acknowledgment that we obviously didn't like our food didn't ask nothing. The outdoor patio is very cute and spacious. We were right under a heater so we were nice and cozy, but it seems not all tables have the same heat access. We got the butternut squash pizza and ceviche, and both were delicious! They also have a happy hour deal on drinks weeknights before 6 pm, which was a pleasant surprise. Great brunch spot in Berkeley! Think California fare, organic comfort food, craft cocktails, and good vibes! The first thing I noticed about Gather was their lovely greenhouse-like outdoor dining area! It's open, lush, and a great spot to hear the music (on Sundays!). They also have a lovely indoor seating area, but I would definitely recommend the outdoor area if you have a choice! I love that Gather offers local, organic, and ethnically sourced food and drink, so you know it's a meal you can feel good about. I really enjoyed their Brunch Pizza! It has baked eggs, tomato sauce, caramelized onions, bacon, potato, fontinella, mozzarella, and fresh herbs. It's quite sizable! They are also known for their Spicy Tomato Pizza. This one has a kick to it, so if you don't like spicy, you should probably skip this one. It was something different, but I didn't feel that it had as much substance to it. I'd recommend the Brunch Pizza over this one. The Falafel Burger is pretty good. It has a chickpea falafel patty with pickled zucchini, sesame-vegetable slaw, dill-cucumber yogurt, and pumpkin seed pesto on an Acme pain de mie bun. Served with fries. Avocado and Sprout Toast is pretty solid. I'd skip on the Loco Moco. The beef patty was overcooked and tough, and the dish is served with sushi rice instead of regular rice which I thought was an interesting choice...there are better options at Gather! Lastly, GET THE SMASHED BREAKFAST POTATOES! These are incredible. Crispy on the outside with garlic confit and fresh herbs. So so good!! If your dish doesn't already come with these (and even if they do), please order a side of these potatoes! On Sundays, they have live Bluegrass music from 11am-1pm! read more

We had a reservation for three at 7:15 on a Friday, and was hosted by one of our vegan friends. Luckily, this place seemed to have a great reputation, and it had been years since I'd been. The ambiance was more than hectic, it felt chaotic with a vibe of high anxiety, with rushing waitstaff and servers. We were pointed to our table, near the door. No salt, pepper, no table ware. The waitress didn't introduce herself and abruptly asked for our order. She left without a moments notice, no questions asked or invited. She wasn't much available. When the dishes were delivered, the server stood on one side of the table, plopping the dishes at the end, expecting we should reach for them. Again rushing off. I ordered the caesar salad and he was off without checking if we needed salt, or pepper or anything. I jokingly said to our host "I feel like we've been accosted with our dinner." He agreed. At some point the waitress came back around to check how things were going, and our host decided to add another dish, and she flew away, and I'm still waiting for a pepper grinder for my salad. When we finally caught the attention of someone, a single pepper shaker was delivered, no grinder, no salt. I ordered the halibut, which was dry as a bone, and considering that it was $36, I was really disappointed. The salad was ok, but again, would have been much better with fresh cracked pepper. Once we were done with dinner (we had warned her about needing to go for our evening entertainment) she disappeared again and we waited for our host to cover the meal. He struggled that the bill didn't have Apple Pay, or any way to cover it at the table so we could dip out to get to our dance on time. He actually had to get up and walk back to the waiter's station to handle the bill so we could leave. For someplace as popular and supposedly inviting, there was no ambiance, no graciousness, and it felt like we were an imposition to the wait staff. Like we were a bother, and in the way. I recall coming to this place shortly after they opened many many years ago, and it was a totally different experience. I get the feeling that they are riding on their reputation of sustainability and farm to table and have the constant run of reservations without needing to try much. Food ok but bathroom arrangement inconvenient and potentially dangerous. (2) bathrooms, one with urinal/stall and another with two stalls labeled all gender. If you bother to notice there is an interior lock that brings up a vacant/occupied sign. If locked, (2) people can't use either bathroom causing unnecessary wait vs if they labeled Male and female so 4 people could use bathroom. If you don't notice and are a woman and walk into the 2 stall bathroom a man can walk in and no one would notice and it can be locked. A labeled bathroom with keyed lock makes women more safe where another woman may walk in giving predators pause who look for ways to isolate women. While not pertinent, I am a moderate who votes both ways and my fiancé's transgender brother lives with us and our kids with me being happy a relative is here. Food: fresh sugar donut holes with fresh fruit preserves 10/10 light, hot and airy and the preserves made it, Caesar salad with chicken 10/10 light and chicken roasted in house and tender, veggie frittata with roasted potatoes and fresh green salad with vinaigrette 10/10 flavorful frittata with tons of asparagus and the right amount of cheese to egg ratio (light and fluffy), potatoes were so good with the extra sprinkling of maldon salt at the end and fresh fresh greens with ribbons of Nanette carrots, and sausage pizza 9/10 flavorful Italian sausage made in house but cheese and sausage slid right off the crust. It made for tough eating but the crust was thin and crispy. It did get soggy in the middle.
