    soup or curry?
    Bee F.

Why is finding good Thai in the East Bay so hard? We ordered pretty classic stuff--pad Thai that somehow leaned way too sweet, and a green chicken curry that was so watered down it felt more like a soup than an actual curry. My husband also ended up getting food poisoning, which really sealed the deal on this one. We're pretty sure it was the mai tai served in a novelty cat cup... and now I have questions about how often that thing is actually getting properly cleaned. Let's just say I'm not thinking about it too hard. Anyway. Another Thai spot crossed off the list. The search continues.

I've dined at both the SF and Oakland locations before. Oakland started off really strong for me but over time the food felt a little inconsistent, and the SF location personally just did not hit for me. But this Berkeley location? Okayyyy now let's get into it. Parking here is definitely challenging, so give yourself extra time. We came on Mother's Day with reservations at 2 PM, right before they closed for their dinner reset at 3, and we were still seated pretty quickly which I appreciated, especially with how busy it was. We sat outside on the patio and honestly it was such a nice vibe. They do have outdoor heaters if needed, but the weather was perfect that day. We did everything à la carte for a party of 7. Appetizers: Vegan Spring Rolls: 5/5 Super crispy and fresh. The chili peanut sauce was so good we kept going back for more. Crispy Pork Belly: 1/5 Way too overcooked for our liking. It came out super dry and chewy, almost like a thick pork jerky. Definitely not something we would order again. Main dishes: Panang Neua: 5/5 OMG. This was the dish I came for and it absolutely delivered. The meat literally falls off the bone and melts in your mouth. The sauce leans salty, so pairing it with the blue rice balances everything out perfectly. So rich and flavorful. Crab Fried Rice: 5/5 The large chunks of crab really made this dish stand out. It was flavorful, not dry, and not overly mushy either. Solid all around. Hat Yai Fried Chicken: 2/5 Too thin and too dry for us. I would not reorder this dish, but the roti it came with was actually really good dipped into the sauce. Beef Larb: 5/5 Wagyu beef? Say less. This dish was perfectly seasoned and packed with flavor. Straight chef's kiss. Yellow Curry: 4/5 Honestly you really can't go wrong with yellow curry here. Comforting, flavorful, and paired well with everything else we ordered. And of course we ended with the mango sticky rice to share because you simply have to. It was the mango on top to finish the meal. Overall, this Berkeley location easily gave us the best experience out of the three. Great service, beautiful patio seating, and several dishes that were genuinely memorable. We'll definitely be back for that Panang Neua alone.

Lunch combo was delicious and beautifully presented on a large platter. Comes with soup, 2 appetizers and entree. Like that they use a lot of quality fresh vegetables in their food. Restaurant has beautiful ambience and elevator lift for disabled. "Smile" was our very kind and friendly waitress.

Food: everything we had was really delicious. The pad Thai is super chewy and had an awesome balance and kick in flavor. The vegan fresh rolls were my personal winner of the meal though. Ingredients were very simple but paired with the sauces, it had such a flavor that I couldn't imagine. Portion sizes were fair and appropriate however, it is definitely on the pricier side. For 3 dishes and no drinks, it costed $80 and these were the cheaper items on the menu. Ambiance: very lovely decorations and very cute aesthetics. Perfect for a date or just a nice lunch. They managed to pack quite a fair amount of seating in their small space Service: we showed up on a Sunday afternoon where there were about 6 tables of guests and 2 waiters on the floor. They had us wait at the door for 5-7 minutes and then after we were seated we waited another couple minutes before our menu was given to us and another 10-15 minutes before our order was taken. However, when they did give us attention, the servers were very nice and friendly. TLDR: nice and friendly servers but expect a wait in between requests

I had high expectations, but the food quality here was completely off. The chicken wings had a distinct, rancid taste to them--either fried in old oil or using meat that was far past its prime--making them entirely inedible. To make matters worse, the Pad Thai noodles were totally flavorless, bland, and lacked any of the rich, signature Thai spices and sauces. Definitely not worth the price or the hype. Won't be returning.

Ambiance is good and waiters were very attentive and kind but menu is slightly deceptive; it's additional for your choice of meat on top of the dishes already being pricey. Giant "shaved ice" snowball on Thai iced tea was unnecessary and inedible. Yellow curry and blue rice are definitely the highlight: those alone are 5 stars. Pad Kee Mow was definitely on the spicier end but our waiter did warn us so no fault for that! Overall pricey night out for 2 seeing as we got 2 dishes and shared one drink.

I love everything about this place !!! Huge sizes so they are for two to share FYI. The decoration is fun and the food is amazing literally everything is delicious. The crab fried rice comes with tons of real crab and a palate cleansing broth. The Thai tea comes like a snow cone so cute, also if I ate red meat I'd order the cup of noodles next time because it looks great. The fresh rolls don't have avocado but make up for it in uniqueness. Really friendly service quick and attentive. Advice- don't sit toward the back of the patio because people will be walking behind you the whole time so just make sure you have room around your table as the space is narrow. Besides that prices are comparable and food is great fresh quality.

10/10 Thai tea and samosas. Get 4 samosas! Best curry I've ever had. Coconut curry with just an insane amount of flavor but not in an overwhelming way. Come here!!

The food, service, and ambiance were amazing. I had a party of 3 and we went on a Sunday at 5PM (when they opened). We were seated quickly and they had several openings upstairs. The restaurant is really beautiful with their lighting and view. They also did accommodate a table for 8-10 people next to us if you're looking to reserve a large party. We ordered the Pad Thai with Pork (+$2), Green Curry with chicken (+$2), Papaya Salad, Jasmine Rice, and Neua Num Tok Rolls. Everything was packed with flavor and spice. The curry was definitely spicy but tolerable. I would come back to try other dishes!

My main complaint is that this place is pretty overpriced. I think you can find the same level of authentic, good Thai food for so much less. You just get so little food considering how much you have to pay... plus the curries don't come with rice? You have to buy like the smallest scoop of rice for an extra $5?! Wild to me. The vibes were really cool and the service was good, so I could justify the prices on special occasion... but other than that it's not worth it imo.

Really enjoyed our meal at Farmhouse Kitchen Thai in Berkeley. The food was flavorful and everything we tried had a nice balance of bold Thai flavors. The presentation was definitely a highlight too--colorful, fun, and very photo-worthy, with dishes that felt thoughtfully plated. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is the price. It's definitely on the pricier side for Thai food, so it feels more like a special occasion spot than an everyday dinner. That said, the taste, presentation, and overall experience were still really good. I'd come back when I'm in the mood to splurge a little.

    Homer S.

I've been to the Oakland one so was thinking it was more of the same in ambiance. It's a little toned down more with the space. I was hoping for something else with the Oxtail Curry. It was kind of salty but meat was tender. I was hoping for a peanut tinge. IYKYK. Everything else was good. Service was great. We were seated on the 2nd floor. And I think I want to go again because of how hosptiable the people were. There was a gigantic tv that always had fireplace showing.

Forget Imm Thai--this is my new go-to spot for Thai food. From presentation to flavor, everything delivers a solid 10/10. Among the classics, the pad thai was the best I've ever had. I still think Imm Thai does pad see ew slightly better, but this place holds its own. The Thai iced tea is pretty unique with a dome of shaved ice, but I wasn't a fan--it ended up being too watery. The khao soi (a curry noodle soup) is on the pricier side, but the generous pieces of beef short rib are unbelievably tender and completely worth it. The roti mataba also makes for an excellent appetizer--hearty and savory. And the Thai vacation omg...coconut ice cream and blue sticky rice served inside a coconut shell, topped with fresh coconut meat. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's the best dessert I've ever had. Skip the mango sticky rice and order this; I'd come back for it alone. Service is consistently polite, attentive, and thoughtful. They even cleared and wiped down our table before bringing dessert, which I really appreciated. Try out this place for Sunday brunch on the outdoor patio!!

If you didn't know, know ya…read moreknow...located essentially across the way from CAL in Berkeley, East Bay Spice to me is a hidden gem filled with such nostalgic memories shared with friends over the years. They closed for a time, and now seem to be thriving again! Heading to the Greek for a weekend show, we wanted to pop in somewhere close-by. We cozied up to bar seating, and enjoy a couple of martinis featuring local gin and vodka, and ordered some food to share: the Original Tikka Masala Flatbread (we had to finally try it!), and the Sev Puri Chaat (first time trying this ever!). Service was amazing, and if I could write this review purely on the originality and creativity of the menus, I would (see pics!) The menus were CD cases (remember those, ha) with a fun take on 'Spice Girls', titled 'East Bay Spice Company'. For Spice Girls fans, you will recognize what album this was derived from. Each page of the cd book was a different part of the menu, including drinks, happy hour (from 2-6pm), and food. So fun, and unlike anything I've ever seen before. The food was so fresh and delicious. Loved the pomegranate seeds and lightness from the Sev Puri Chaat, bite size garbanzo bean/potato goodness! And standing O for that flatbread..pro-tip: get a side of the Tikka Masala sauce to pour on top. Absolutely amazing. I'm a huge fan of Tikka Masala, and having that sauce be a base for a pizza...come on!! We did chicken as the protein. Overall, so happy to return and have East Bay Spice back apart of the Berkeley rotation again. Small, dimly-lit, cool digs. Also check out their sister spots: Tap in Lounge and Tipsea in Berk, Blue Rabbit Bar off San Pablo, and Lemon Drop in Alameda.

The presentation was impeccable, and the sauce was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. The chicken seemed like a leaner cut, possibly breast, but it was still tender and not overcooked. I thoroughly enjoyed this plate and would 100% come back to order it again. My husband ordered the flatbread, though I can't remember the exact name, and it was surprisingly delicious as well. It tasted almost like a pizza version of the chicken tikka masala, making it a great shareable option if you're looking to snack, chat, and enjoy cocktails. Speaking of cocktails, the bartenders seemed very knowledgeable and helped me choose a drink based on my preferred spirit and cocktail style. I ended up with the Skeleton Key, which was strong, but still paired well with the meal. I'd happily come back to try more cocktails and, of course, order that chicken tikka masala again.

Tupper and Reed still stands tall above everyone else. I stopped in on a Saturday evening, feeling pretty mellow. There are some negative reviews here about rude, more accurately, unresponsive bartenders, and I don't think they get what this place is all about. If you want a chatty, friendly bartender, go to an Irish pub. This place is all about creating unique concoctions in volume. Having said that, I'll tell you a story. In March 2019, I was with a chatty bartender here, since it was a quiet night. I was looking at the vast array of bottles, and noticed something that said "Buffalo Trace" but looked different from their usual bottle. I asked her what it was, and she didn't know. It had about three fingers left at the bottom, so she looked at me mischievously and said, "wanna finish it with me?" So we did. Turns out, that 375 ml bottle was worth about $300. It was one of their experimental batches, made with oats in 2002. I found a bottle online in England and got it shipped here. Best whiskey I've ever had.

We heard this building has been many different iterations over the years, but happy to have found this spot in Berkeley for a fun happy hour with friends. We enjoyed the wine flight (choice of 4 wines), each with a nice pour, and shared the spinach dip with chips. We also enjoyed an espresso martini to cap off the evening. The staff were super friendly, and the lounge was filled with what seemed like regulars. The lounge couches were super comfy and it was an overall very relaxing yet intimate experience. I would definitely come back again with a group, or even stop by for a date night. Parking is a bit tough in this area, but there is street parking (if lucky enough to find it) and garages nearby.
