I have a fairly large at home bar with plenty of ingredients, so it gets harder to find a place that serves craft cocktails that I couldn't make myself. Tupper and Reed still stands tall above everyone else. I stopped in on a Saturday evening, feeling pretty mellow. After I arrived, a band started up that reminded me of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. You can't beat the ambiance, since this was an old music store, and the please is littered with antique record players and instruments. There are some negative reviews here about rude, more accurately, unresponsive bartenders, and I don't think they get what this place is all about. If you want a chatty, friendly bartender, go to an Irish pub. This place is all about creating unique concoctions in volume. Having said that, I'll tell you a story. In March 2019, I was with a chatty bartender here, since it was a quiet night. I was looking at the vast array of bottles, and noticed something that said "Buffalo Trace" but looked different from their usual bottle. I asked her what it was, and she didn't know. It had about three fingers left at the bottom, so she looked at me mischievously and said, "wanna finish it with me?" So we did. Turns out, that 375 ml bottle was worth about $300. It was one of their experimental batches, made with oats in 2002. I found a bottle online in England and got it shipped here. Best whiskey I've ever had. read more

Cute bar with occasional live music! They ID at the front, and last time I went they quizzed me on my ID and my friends. They seemed really strict. I walked out and back in and had to show ID again. It's unclear to me when they choose to open the upstairs or not. It was closed this time we came so there was less seating. There are some creative drinks of the menu and also classics. The service was coo. The drinks were good - the cocktails were on the stronger side but I didn't mind that. That's why I'm drinking in the first place. I think this place is mostly for the ambiance. It's somewhat pricey, but I don't know if that's a factor of the local area, inflation, or the interior just looking super dope. But take that with what you will if you take a look at the menu. I think this place is a nice spot for talking/drinking on date nights. Maybe like a pit stop before going somewhere else for dinner. If you can afford it, this is a nice regular spot too. This place is super cute and the service has been great so far. Jeff, Isan, and Sarah are amazing! So friendly and welcoming. The only drawback is that the outside stinks like sewage and sometimes it permeates inside. Wish they would fix that! I can smell it all the way to the pool table in the back of the building. Someone else said this bar gives New England vibes and it does. It reminds me of a pub I visited a few times in Boston, but that's aside the point. Let's start with the customer service - bar tenders were really attentive and nice. The vibes - casual, cozy, chill, mature crowd. The drinks - not your typical concoctions that you can find at other places. They have an interesting menu but or course, you can order more traditional drinks too. The drinks are affordable and strong. I tried 4 to get a better sampling of the menu. I only wish I took a picture so I could remember the names. I came on a Friday night and a DJ eventually came to set up shop in front of the fireplace. Nice mix of music, not overly loud which I appreciated. Bathrooms are clean too, always a plus. read more

New England vibes at this cocktail bar on Shattuck. This place does not serve food so it's definitely a before-dinner or late-night-drinks kind of place. We had their All Her Luck (strawberry gin / $14), Making Memories (akvavit / $14), Wino vs Dracula (toki whiskey / $14), and Pas de Bourree (parmesan brandy / $15). We enjoyed the Wino vs Dracula the most (flavorful and strong), while the Making Memories (egg whites overshadow the distinct akvavit flavor) and All Her Luck (on the sweeter side) were solid. Definitely worth a return visit to try some of the other items on their menu. Very cool bar that feels unique due to the historical building - so glad they didn't change it from when it used to be Beckett's way back when. Feels like you're at a pub in Europe. We really enjoyed our drinks and they had a DJ on Halloween weekend, it wasn't so packed that you felt claustrophobic, we found seats in the back and watched people play pool. I've walked by Tupper and Reed a handful of times without realizing what's inside. Walking into the bar felt like I was transported to a tavern on a winter night in New England -- fireplace, wooden chairs, and all around cozy vibes. I was a bit confused at first because there was a sign instructing you to wait to be seated, but apparently you just walk inside and seat yourself. The menu was interesting to say the least! I ordered the Making Memories (highly recommend if you like slightly sweet, foamy cocktails) and Vodka is Kind of a Hobby (super odd -- I think it had drops of olive oil or something similar?). I liked that the menu had a handful of unique drinks. I came on a weekday night and it got pretty busy around 10pm, so I imagine weekends are much busier. Found this place during a conference at UCB ...a little small...my biggrst gripe is they have no food but drinks are on point. We came twice and spent many hours there. They have a pool table you can play but it is a little cramped if it's full. As I mentioned, the drinks are bomb.com.org.gov Apparently there is an upstairs area but it was closed both times we were there. Bathrooms are downstairs so make sure you're still able to walk up and down the stairs or you will eat it. Lol Anyway I totally see myself coming back. So check it out! Who likes fancy cocktails? Well if you do, definitely check out this place on Shattuck. Me and my girl went here recently and I was extremely impressed with our experience. We got there around 6pm on a weekday and we were greeted by a friendly bartender. Forgot her name, which makes me sort of sad but also makes me realize how potent the drinks are. After all, I usually have a pretty good memory. Oh!! Also to add. We ended up taking a Lyft to get there this night but however parking is pretty standard. There's limited street parking and two nearby parking garages should you need them. The drinks were amazing. We were on the fence a couple times about certain drinks but the bartender was always nice and gave us easy descriptions on what to expect if we were to order a particular drink. This particular night I started off with a Ace of Hearts. It had the perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness! I don't think I've ever had Batavia Arrack before but I enjoyed the earthy tones of it. Mixed with Amaro, Honey and Lemon, the drink overall had an amazing complexity to it. Most of the drinks on the menu that we ordered, followed the same pattern. I always appreciate fancy cocktail bars like this because it also a hobby if mine. It's always nice going somewhere where you have a long list of cocktails with interesting ingredients to try but are also potent on top of that. I definitely will be back. I closed my eyes, reopened them and it felt like I was in a pub/bar somewhere in Europe. I absolutely LOVE the interior of this cocktail bar- I didn't feel like I was in the heart of Cal Bear University. The lighting was perfectly dim, creating a sweet romantic setting. Next to our table we had a wood burning fire place with our drinks in hand-everything was perfect. This is the ideal date night spot, where you can have great conversations. I was really looking forward to checking out this bar that was described to me as Harry Potter -esque. Came here during happy hour with some friends. I ordered off the happy hour menu and it took so long. The bartender wasn't familiar with the ingredients and she had a hard time finding them behind the bar. Wouldn't be a huge deal but she was super rude the entire time. I tried 3 different drinks here and they were all varying levels of horrible. I was really surprised as I tried so many different variations and every single one tasted bad. The last one I had was savory and tasted like soup. I love soup and it is my favorite food but I couldn't stand the drink, nor could my friends. My friend loved her tequila drink and ordered it 3 times so she didn't have the same experience as me but agreed the bartender was super mean for no reason. Not good vibes.
