this is the new ivy room?

the ivy room has been there for live music fans for decades, and is at this point one of the last places in the east bay to take live music seriously. so that part is good, and thanks to the Lani for that. but this nasty picture? yuck! why?

Great bartenders and music lovers will return with frequency as this is the music bar you can support and believe in!

Love love love this place, which has great vibes, fantastic and creative musicians, better than average drinks and a great crowd. Sound is great. If you're an aging rock and punk fan like me, you'll be happy to know that there are a few chairs and booths for you to sit in if you're too tired to join the pit, but if you're in the mood to dance and approach the stage there's plenty of space and time for that too. Get there early in the evening if you want a seat. I love that it's woman owned and operated and women are well-represented among the bands that play here too. Great ambiance and bartenders.

Love this place! I have seen so many shows here, across a wide range of genres. The bartenders and staff are always friendly. This place is a treasure! If Albany is an oasis, the Ivy Room is its Casbah!

I feel like this is definitely one one those if you're from the area you've been to or you know of this awesome little venue. They always have great musicians coming through and their sound is really good. You gotta check out the old show posters on the wall, there are some that I wish I could have seen! Bar staff are friendly and welcoming. They consistently bring their A-game

This spot in Albany boasts of nightly music with local bands. They have tickets that you can buy ahead of time or at the door. For a measly $10 you can see 3-4 good local bands and support local thriving artists. What I like most about this place was this feeling of community with bands, all of them supported each other and some even shared the same artists. It was truly something I hadn't seen before with bands pumping each other up. Each band was diversely different but the music was always entertaining. Th service is also great with the bouncer being welcoming and the bar service being quick. There isn't a crazy rush to the bar or stage like most places with everyone resourcing personal space. Parking is street and easily available. This institution is great for an evening of music.

I was thinking what would be worthy of my 4,600th Yelp review milestone, and by sheer coincidence, I've come back here after an absence of 4,600 years. OK, it hasn't been that long, but I was knee-high to a man and gave me a piece of mamma daddy never had...when I was last here. Oh Philadelphia Freedom, shine on me. Anyway I distinctly remember more of a tiki vibe back then and a pina colada in my hand. I think it even had a tiny, folding pink paper parasol in it. Now all these years later, Jamie W. and I are back for St. Paddy's Day to see how the Ivy Room was holding up. Very well if you ask me. It definitely feels more like a comfortable neighborhood bar than I remember from my youth, but of course I've become more comfortable and neighborhoody in my advanced years so maybe Ivy and I have been aging at the same rate. This time we avoided anything fruity or tropical and went straight for a couple of $5 Drake's Hefeweizens in plastic cups, of course (photo: http://bit.ly/2Z9HadJ). We watched, listened and danced a wee bit of a jig to a ten-piece Pogues-inspired bar band aptly named The Bogues (video: http://bit.ly/2ZajBBe). 'Twas a grand time we had even if there was no place to sit. In fact, we liked our experience so much we came back a couple of weeks later to see Fleetwood Macrame, a tribute band to, you guessed it, Fleetwood Mac with the lead singer and guitarist evoking Stevie Nicks quite accurately with her shawl-draped moves (video: http://bit.ly/2Z9HfOz). Oh yes, Ivy Room, I'm back. DRINKS - 3 stars...the pina coladas are fades memories but the Hefeweizens hit the spot MUSIC - 4.5 stars...what we came in for AMBIANCE - 4 stars...laid back and chilll SERVICE - 4 stars...the bartender moved fast TOTAL - 4 stars...definitely a homecoming for me RELATED - Looking for dining options on Solano Avenue? The menu changes regularly, which keeps things interesting, but one thing that never changes is the consistently excellent service. One of my favorite things about this spot is how dog-friendly it is. The owner's dog is practically the co-owner of the bar and is often lounging around, adding even more personality to the experience. If you are lucky enough to meet him, just know the dog has standards. The dog only accepts meat, so do not bother offering him the tortilla from your taco. Trust me, you will be judged. Another major perk is that they allow outside food. Conveniently, there is a taco truck right next door serving some of the best carnitas tacos around, making it easy to pair great food with great drinks. Also, keep an eye on the TVs. They always seem to be playing some delightfully over-the-top late-night movie programming that inevitably sparks random conversations and plenty of laughter among the crowd. Overall, this is a fantastic neighborhood bar with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and a ton of personality. It can get crowded, so try to grab a spot early if you can. You'll notice plenty of regulars who come back again and again, and to me, that is always one of the best signs that a place is doing something right.

Other people were free to also hang out in the patio too, but because we got there early and our group was big, we were able to put the tables together and it really just felt like we were the only ones there; very intimate. There is a pool table and a bar on the second floor, so you don't have to go back downstairs. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They provided great customer service and came by to our table to pick up empty glasses. There was an incident that happened where a man was taking pictures of people in the bar and he came outside to the patio and started taking photos of our group, which we felt very uncomfortable about. We alerted staff and they were able to handle the situation and came back to check on us. They don't serve food here, but they do allow you to bring food from other places! That was very convenient because we were already comfortable and didn't want to leave to go somewhere else. Tacos El Autlense is a 5 min walk away and it's one of my fave places to get tacos; that's where we got our food at! I literally had it the night before too hahaha, but I wasn't complaining! I've been coming here a bit more regularly, lately - more visits in the last year compared to the previous decade, in fact. Now I wonder what I was waiting for. According to the East Bay Express, Schmidt's Pub is "basically your living room, but better" - that does sum it up, except that very few of us have living rooms anything like this, with a cozy fireplace surrounded by comfy armchairs and rustic tables beside sunny windows. Not many of us have living rooms with Old Speckled Hen on tap, or populated with an entertaining parade of quirky folk and friendly dogs. If the people and dogs are not entertaining enough then pick up a copy of Calvin and Hobbes or A History of Clay Pipes (okay, I made that one up) and have a little retreat with a pint. 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on these factors: * Beer on tap (transported in reusable kegs) has a much lower footprint compared to bottles or cans. * Allows you to bring your own food, which is good for folk like vegans who are often more comfortable with BYO. * The snacks available at the counter could be a bit more Berkeley (or Albany)! They were mostly from big corps - Lays chips (PepsiCo) and chocolate bars from Mars. Would be nice to see a more imaginative/ethical selection. * A great community space with an inclusive atmosphere. Schmidt's is home to many groups (e.g., knitting) and provides a second family for many, some who send postcards from their trips! * Finally, we shouldn't underestimate the importance of having a place to slow down, reflect and connect with each other a little. In that respect, Schmidt's Pub is worth its weight in gold.

Located on a busy stretch of Solano Avenue on the lower…read moreportion near the San Pablo Avenue intersection on Albany, California, Little Star Pizza is just one of many locations of this burgeoning franchise from owner Brian Sadigursky, who began his mini-pizza making empire of his signature cornmeal crust deep dish pizzas in a small location along Divisadero Street in San Francisco's Nopa neighborhood. That location has since closed down, but two locations remain, this one in Albany and another along Valencia Street in San Francisco's Mission District. The team also owns three The Star pizza restaurants with locations in Oakland, Alameda, and Portland, Oregon. With all these locations to keep track of what makes people keep coming back for all these wide varieties of pizza pies? It's the dough of course, but it is not just any dough, it is their beautifully crusty cornmeal dough that is cooked to perfection for their Chicago-style deep dish pizza that is what makes Little Star and all of their subsidiaries so worthwhile. I had originally been to this location when they were located literally right next door in a smaller location on the corner. Now, in a much larger location, with floor to ceiling windows that let in natural light on two sides, and their own communal parking lot, where there is a door for direct takeout orders, Little Star Pizza is thriving here in Albany. What brought me and a dining mate back for a first time visit to this newer location was the affordable lunchtime deal that they serve seemingly seven days a week. From open until 3 p.m. diners can order a Personal Signature Pizza either Deep Dish or Thin Crust for only 11 dollars. You can also build your own personal pizza for 9 dollars which is an affordable option. My fellow dining mate and I knew we wanted to select from their Seasonal Specials or their Signature Pies. I decided to order their Personal size All-Star Signature Pie, which was topped with bacon, meatballs, sausage, pepperoni, provolone cheese and served on their signature cornmeal crust, then filled with mozzarella cheese and house-made tomato sauce & finished with parmesan & oregano. My dining mate was intrigued by their Specials menu, and their Personal size Sweet Heat, which was topped with spicy sausage, caramelized red onions, cherry peppers, hot honey and served on their signature cornmeal crust, then filled with mozzarella cheese and house-made tomato sauce & finished with parmesan & oregano. Since both pizzas were so affordable at 11 dollars each, we decided to splurge and order two dessert drinks as I ordered their Golden Gate Orange Soda Float and my dining mate ordered their Dad's Root Beer Soda Float. The wait for our personal size pizzas would be a lengthy one, at least twenty minutes, which for about a nine inch pizza pie, is still a considerable amount of time. But once you do get the pizzas you order, I can report it is well worth the wait, as the pizza has that extra special graininess to it that makes it extra special good. Combined with the fresh tomatoes and an abundance of mozzarella cheese, you cannot go wrong with any type of pizza you order. I liked my All-Star pizza pie with its abundance of meat toppings and I tried my dining mates Sweet Heat pizza pie and it came as delivered as it has a combination of sweetness meets spiciness. Luckily our wait wasn't too long, as we had our ice cream and soda floats to keep us satiated while we waited for our pizzas to be handcrafted. Our total bill was $42.08, which was with tax but before gratuity, which in all reality was very reasonable considering we ordered two rather large personal deep dish pizzas, and our floats were a mere fraction less in terms of pricing. Since they have a Happy Hour on weeknights from 3-5:30 p.m. with reasonably priced cocktails, one-topping pizzas and other menu items at affordable pricing, you better believe it will not be another decade that passes by before I make another appearance. Here's to the continued success of Little Star Pizza, may more locations be in the future, and may their current locations continue to thrive thanks to their delectable Signature Deep Dish pizzas!
