I wish I had taken a picture of my food. If you are considering eating here before the show, i would strongly recommend NOT doing that. The lack of vegetarian options is very sad knowing the area. My $14 turkey sandwich was sad. Light on the contents and about the size as a hot dog bun. The pesto macaroni salad was so runny it was gross. It's about 2 T worth of product. The drinks from the bar were strong and fabulous but the food was a 1 star at best. It would be better if they didn't offer food at all so then you know for sure to eat before coming :( read more

This bar and lounge is attached to the Fox Theater, and quite crowded and busy before showtime on concert days. So hardly any seating available, but luckily we found a table to stand at this past Thursday evening. They serve a more extensive range of food and drinks beyond what is offered by the bars inside the Fox Theater. We tried the polish dog wrapped in proscuitto and hazy braised turkey sandwich, which came with sides of macaroni and potato salad, and everything was pretty decent, what I would expect from bar food. Plus the food line moved pretty quickly. The bar didn't have any lines at all (separate from the food line), staff was friendly and professional, and the midori sour we got was sweet and tasty. Nothing extraordinary about the atmosphere or menu offerings, but we had a good experience here during our recent visit for the fun and awesome musical performance by Madness!! read more

This is a brief review for the food I bought one evening at a show,. They had three or four sandwiches on the menu, but the person running the food said they were not available. So I got macaroni with a side of chicken (for an extra five dollars). The chicken came in a plastic cup you may find at your typical salsa bar -- it was literally less than one ounce in weight-- with a good amount of skin as part of it The macaroni salad was probably a cup and a half. If you're vegan, avoid buying any food place. The staff does not care, and will just shoo you away. I don't know if the bbq sauce is vegan, but the hot link hopefully is. Staff doesn't care if you're vegan or not. They'll give you non-vegan potato salad unless you tell them not to. Apparently a hotdog is a sub? Make sure to not ask for it. The staff (specifically one person) just recommend to just throw it away. Awesome. THE HUMMUS AND PITA COMES WITH FETA CHEESE! I like the Den best late afternoon, before it gets crowded. You know how most folks like to go to a cafe- get some coffee, perhaps a pastry, and then find a reasonably clean comfortable spot where they can go online or read a book, play with their smart phone, etc- hopefully a comfy couch, or cool chair. I like to do that occasionally as well, but I much prefer a classy bar, which during the day has a similar feel, just without the crowd of yammering ____________!!! (you just thought i meant a bad word didn't you.. nope, you did! haha- i was thinking hipsters..) Have any of you been to the Den during the day when you can actually see just how cool the decor looks? It is one of the few classy joints with great bartenders you can walk into before 7pm. Also for those of you who have seen a great show at the Fox and popped into the den before or after, you know, like I do, that having The Den right next door prolongs a great experience!! I stopped here for trivia night with some friends and we were quite impressed with this bar. The interior is sleek and sophisticated. The vibe is chill. Everyone is really friendly. A glass of wine was $6-$8. Not too shabby. I could imagine this place might not be very fun when it's crowded but when it's not, it's a great place to lounge with some friends. I might have to make this place a regular stop for Tuesday night trivia. Best of all, you can win tickets to a show at the Fox Theater. That beats playing for beer and pizza any day of the week. The decor is interesting. I like the fake robotic, machinery wall with all the buttons and levers. The chairs were comfy and the staff was nice. After an error with the guest list at The Fox, I was pretty bummed to be without a ticket for Broken Bells. I was waiting around awhile outside trying to sort the ticket dilemma, when the staff from The Den welcomed me and told me I should have a seat, relax and catch the show inside. Hands down the best thing about this bar are the multiple screens streaming the live concert happening inside The Fox Theater. I was able to see and hear Broken Bells perform, so that was the next best thing to actually being legitmately inside the venue. This mock lounge is reminiscent of mid 2000s chic, the drinks come in plastic cups with dried garnishes that make you cringe instead of binge. The drinks are watered down and put at a certain limit for preservation and you're left with a annoyed tipsy feeling and want to leave. If you're feeling like a fox who prowls the night to show stopping delight, don't come here. read more

You got to give it to The Town. Yeah, been slumming in the East Bay again, but you know downtown really has come to its own. Not a big fan of the Brown, but I'll give him some cred for trying to bring life to what was no man's land. Went to The Den on a Friday night and I was surprised. Hell, I did not know what to expect. where do I start? Let's see, parking was hard, and I am talking about Oakland -- hard to believe -- right? We stroll up to the Fox Theater and hit The Den, its what I am calling a Lobby/Lounge. Cool long bar, vintage light board, retro/modern couches and a very hip red leather 12' chase. The crowed was very diverse (not even in SF). The drinks were well poured, the DJ was going down on local bands. NOTE TO MANAGEMENT: Plastic Cups? What is that about? You can afford real glass, I am not at a frat party here. Also, get rid of the cheesy "food stand" I think those hot dogs you serve have been with the Theater since it opened who knows when. THE DEN is another wonderful addition to the growing list of postive nightlife establishments in the Uptown Oakland area. Located next to the historical Fox Theater, THE DEN has transformed the often unused space into a modern lounge while maintaining a 1920's Art Deco feel. The service was on par during my visit. However, the only complaint I have is that on Friday's and Saturday nights, the music is WAYYYY TOOO LOUD which has THE DEN sounding like a typical nightclub instead of the upscale lounging establishment it really is. There are rumors that this place serves food, and I did see a few plates surface during a recent visit, but I have yet to obtain clear confirmation on this. Another issue you should be aware of is the fact that this place can get PACKED with people, meaning you will be waiting in line to get in. So, ladies, wear some comfortable shoes... LOL read more

The Den - Friday Night Dance Party At THE DEN - Lounges Near Me - Oakland, California

This was one of seven places my friends and I stopped by this past weekend looking for places to throw an event. The venue itself is spacious and nice looking. And the bartenders were cool. My issue (and it was a big one) was the extreme unprofessionalism of a specific member of the door staff. An initial staff member (different guy) who let us in noted that one of my friends didn't meet the dress code, but since it was early evening he would let us in for a drink so that we could take a look at the place. He was polite and cordial. We ordered a drink, looked around a bit, then sat down to discuss the Super Bowl. As we were enjoying our conversation, another door person walked up to us (he had a big band aid on his chin), and told my friend he needed to remove his hat. My friend did so without looking at the security guy, which the security guy obviously mistook as an affront to his manhood. He said, "Is there a problem?" At this point, I stepped in and said, "Not at all. We just stopped in to have one drink and we'll be on our way." Security guy (stepping closer to my friend): "Maybe you all don't need to finish your drinks." Me: "Wow...um...he took off his hat and did what you asked, and everything is under control. Your job is done. We're just here to relax." At this point, the security guy looks at me thinking, not sure how to respond. Then he again looks at my friend and says in a confrontational tone, "You seem like you have a problem." My friend, now obviously agitated finally speaks up, "Do YOU have a problem? You're the one over here trying to be a tough guy." Security guy: "I bet you think you're a tough guy." Me: "Can you please just go away. We're relaxing." You see where this is going, right? After a bit more of a tense exchange, I convince the door guy to go away. But by now we're irritated and miserable. My friend regains his composure and has a friendly conversation with the bar staff before we leave. As we're leaving, the confrontation-seeking security guy at the door does some tough guy posturing and some jaw jacking. That's pretty much the story. Everyone else there, including the other security, were fine. But I'm not sure I'll be trying to throw any events here or even return as long as they employ a cheap goon/thug who reflects poorly on their business. We moved on to the Den from Pican after many many cocktails so read this review with a medium sized grain of salt. I found this place a little odd. We arrived around 9 pm on a Friday night so I expected a little more ambiance and bustle. But instead, I felt like we arrived after a big party had ended. Here are some reasons: 1. The place was almost empty and rather sparsely furnished, not in the cool and modern, done intentionally for effect way but like they cleared some tables and chairs to make room for a mob and that the mob has moved on and I should expect to see someone with a broom asking me to step aside while they sweep under my feet. 2. They served our drinks in disposable plastic cups. In my hazy state I wondered if it was St. Patrick's day and I was in an Irish bar after everyone else had moved on. No green beer tho. 3. The lighting was too bright (at least for me), especially the hallway to the bathroom. I kept thinking that they turned on the bright lights as a hint for us to leave. The whole experience felt like a very strange dream. I'll have to go back when I'm a little less un-sober and update my review. Three stars for now. read more

Not really loving the Den, despite my happiness at having another spot in Uptown. I went there last night for the first time and there were a few issues. 1) It was dead. Maybe there's something about the Saturday after New Year's Eve but, at 9 PM, the cavernous space was basically empty. After ten minutes of waiting at the bar for my late friend, it felt like the life was being sucked out of me. 2) Service was rude in the worst kind of way - behind your back rude. The bartender was totally friendly and attentive to me, got my drink, whatever. But, as I was waiting for my friend, two women were outside, trying to come into the bar, and they came to the wrong door. Maybe not the sharpest move, admittedly, but as he was smiling and waving them to the right door, he was clowning on them. He literally said, "Wrong door, retards!" - which is obviously wrong for multiple reasons. He then proceeded to be all smarmy and friendly when it came time for them to order drinks. Not on my watch, you ass. 3) The bar tending skills seemed to be lacking. My friend (when his ass finally showed up) ordered an Old-Fashioned. Now, I'm no bartender but isn't an Old-Fashioned a classic drink that anyone working a bar should know how to make? Not at the Den. They wouldn't make it. Really? I'm giving it two stars because the guy working the door was friendly, the space is nice and would be great if filled with people, and I may have just come on the wrong night. But next time I'm in the neighborhood and want to go somewhere fancy and pay $12 for a nice cocktail, I'll be crossing the street and heading to Flora. The bartender at the Den will probably be calling me a bitch through the window, anyway. read more

I stopped into The Den before (and after) a concert at The Fox. I asked for the bartender's speciality, as is my custom whenever I visit a new bar. Both of my drinks cost $8 and came in short, clear plastic cups. Based on their size and presentation, these drinks should have cost $6 each. It all evened out when another patron gave me his Jack & Coke at closing. The Den is a decent bar overall. I couldn't see coming here when there isn't a show at the adjoining Fox Theater. The expensive drinks and paltry "pints" of beer are not worth their weight. I liked the pulled pork sandwich and chocolate chip cookies for sale in the back of The Den. The pulled pork had enough of a kick to bring a tear to my heavily kohled eye. I'm lucky I didn't leave looking like the prom queen on the cover of an old Hole CD. read more

A nice place to have your final drink before a show at The Fox. Spacious, open space, comfortable flat couches to sit down with your friends and kick it before the show opens, and private inside entrances attached to The Fox. You get to to on on the left side for Ticket Holders and bypass any lines, so instantly you feel like you're getting the VIP treatment. Have your drink, chat with your friends, then make your way inside for the show. The interior is almost as swank as The Fox, and a great accompaniment to the Fox experience. All in all, you feel much more like a VIP at The Fox than at other venues in SF, and is there really anything wrong with the lost art of presentation and good customer service? I know, I know, some people think that being given an attitude makes a place special . . . I'm sorry, but you won't get that at The Fox. read more

I started the night off at many establishments before, so by the time I entered the Den, I was pretty much on my way to a good night. I love the proximity to the theatre, the bartenders and the nibbles. The patrons and fellow concert goers seemed pleasant as well. It's swanky, not janky, and could lead to hanky-panky. The little couches, the main gathering area and the upstairs lounge area is a great place to mingle and relax while sipping on your bevvie. I ordered the bbq pulled pork sandwich and it was pretty good. Of course as it got closer to show time, I saw almost every other person with one too, since it's the item with the most substance on their snack menu. It's a wee bit messy though. The drinks are strong, atmosphere is buzzing and I think the Den could be a great hang out pre or post show, or just if you're on Telegraph and wanting to take in the sights. I enjoy a place that bustles and hums, but sometimes, I just want to curl up and watch the city go by while I sip some whiskey on the couch in a chilled and lax environment. It was packed but thank goodness I was able to stand and move around without having people in front of me. I will definitely come back here. My friends and I were chilling upstairs where you're able to look down and have birdseye view of everything. Here's your Fox Theater pre-show pre-game strategy: Don't bother waiting in line. Hop in The Den, grab a drink from the nice bartenders, chat it up with new and old friends. Get excited for your show. Max out in a chill ambiance and watch the line go by. Yes, they won't preferentially let you in earlier or anything, but once the line is moving they'll let you in once the majority of said line is through. I can't believe this place has a $10 cover charge. In any case, the Den was really roomy and nice inside. I went on a Saturday, so the crowd wasn't too diverse. The drinks here are reasonable price, around $8. However, if you order anything on the rocks, etc. they pour very little. You have to find the right bartender that night. My friend and I were looking for a place to grab some drinks and have a good time. We drove down Telegraph and spotted this place. It seemed out of place. It was large and in charge. You could see happy people inside and outside. Bright lights were flashing and we heard hip-hop. It seemed like just the place for us. We walked in and found it was ladies night. By ladies night, I mean lesbian night. And that was fine by us. We're ladies, so we fit right in. People were expecting all kinds of women to show up and we know girls are much less obvious when they check people out. There wasn't that awkward moment when you come in and the guys undress you with their eyes. When I ordered a cran-vodka and a Long Island iced tea I nearly dropped my cash when the bartender told me it would be $17. My friend said that actually wasn't a bad price. I didn't feel so bad when I realized that the drinks were quite strong and the Long Island was thrice the size of my low-ball vodka. read more

I love the Den solely because of Tuesday trivia at 8 p.m. Granted I've only been to two trivia bars, but the Den beats Pyramid hands-down. The lounge atmosphere and sleek, comfy couches are a great place to sit and brainstorm instead of the hard, wooden chairs and bright, fluorescent lights of Pyramid. The $5 beers aren't bad, nor are the free concert ticket prizes. Plus, since trivia starts at 8 p.m., you can grab all-day happy hour at Lukas Tap Room a few blocks down beforehand. read more

I really want to like this place, I do. The ambiance is nice, the Theater features a lot of great artists, I've even had a good time here in the past. Unfortunately, after my experience here last week, I wont be coming back. It started when I went to the bar to get a drink. The bartender seemed more interested in playing with her tongue ring and texting on her phone then helping out the customers. After about 5 minutes of me waiting patiently, I was finally able to get the bartenders attention. She told me to hold on, and started chatting it up with one of her friends who had walked up to the bar. The bartender then took a shot and made her friend a drink before finally taking my order. You would think after all of that waiting the drink would be good, but it wasn't, it was awful! I asked the bartender if I could just trade my drink for something else. She said no, but that I could pay for another drink if I wanted to. When I asked if I could speak to the manager, she said there wasn't one around. At that point I just left my drink on the bar and went to Mua. This place really has the potential to be nice, but the people who run it need to get a clue and hire some professional staff. read more

This was a nice place. I liked the interior, it seemed classy. The crowd was decent, it was refreshing to see so many brothas and sistas in one venue enjoying themselves. There are bars upstairs and downstairs, but the dance floor was downstairs. Upstairs there are a few tables and seats, if you just want to chill or find a quieter place to have a conversation. Downstairs you will find couches and tables if you want to lounge with friends. The music was do-able, a little inconsistent. The music selection could have been better. The deejay played hip hop but alternated between current and older songs, but not ol' school. Toward the end of the night he played salsa and meringue. I'm not sure if the deejay played this selection to keep the crowd from getting to 'hype' or if he just wasn't up on the latest. Either way the music was good enough to enjoy yourself. Went for an excellent time on NYE-eve. Had enough fun with OlgaT spinning, and the bartenders fixing good strong jack and cokes (in real glassware ftw!) that I had to take it easy on NYE. I went to this place yesterday, a friend of mine recommended it, right next to the Fox Theater on telegraph, I wasn't too sure when he mentioned it, but I loved it as soon as I walked in... the atmosphere made me feel like transported to an old Oakland era. I went with two friends who came from SF and they loved it too, a block away from Bart was perfect for them. We had drinks for a couple hours there, middle of the week so it wasn't too crowded. The bartender was really nice, very spacious place, great seating areas, the old theater controls were awesome, good drinks, all really nice, we didn't want to go. I truly missed the Oakland while living in Paradise,Hawaii... For what its worth....I hella Heart Oakland! So what I liked,.... The mini Carnaval and Africa/Latin dance that broke out in the middle of the club around 12 or so. The kind of people that were there especially the female bartender downstairs that was really pretty and made the strongest drinks that tasted amazing... The fact that no one care about drama but loved the moment we were all sharing, the MJ tribute and the fact that we were all perked and together Or maybe it was the fact that we were all dressed up, listening to good music all together and all hella Hearting Oakland. I visited for the first time yesterday. My friend Betsy invited me, and then I told two more friends...and so on, and so on. So, I absolutely love the space. It is relaxing, spacious, and quite beautiful. The drinks are also pretty tasty. However, I didn't find the bartenders to be too friendly. I even tried to joke with homeboy, but he was barely biting--damn! Anywho, I digress. Will I return? Most certainly. Anywhere that lets me put in $5 for 18 songs of my choice is alright with me.
