We were able to get a seat yet I can only imagine how busy it gets closer to opening First the host and staff: 5 stars for all of you for being so relaxed and welcoming! Second decor: it definitely has the farm to table feel, woodsy clean chic inside and an outdoor patio! We've been eating here for years and it used to be a really great restaurant that I looked forward to bringing out of towners to. Something has changed for the worse and Gather is very hit or miss. My husband and I go longing for how good it was 10-15 years ago but are constantly reminded that it just isn't what it used to be. We had a nice meal here two times ago and decided to go back and we both ordered dishes we had before but were very underwhelming and not consistent with the previous meal. One was the chicken mole half chicken and the other was the peach salad. Good/Great the first time and terrible the second time. The service was really bad the last time and I think we have given up. A little more than a year ago we went for breakfast and the waitress put all the items on the table next to us and our items on our bill. We were in town visiting recently and wanted to find a casual place for brunch on a Saturday morning. Our daughter suggested Gather, and we're glad she did. Here's what we noticed: - Outdoor patio seating was full when we arrived, but that's to be expected at peak time. There was plenty of seating indoors, and the vibe was nice and relaxed/casual. - Lots of good options on the Brunch menu. - Bloody Mary's were great, as was the food. My wife and I split a Brunch Pizza and the Falafel and Eggs meals...both were really good, but the Pizza inched out Falafel for the win. Our daughter ordered the Classic Breakfast and asked for the smashed potatoes to be extra crispy...and they came out as ordered (and extremely tasty). Such a great location and right next door to the Marsh theater (our destination). Beautiful windows, nice large room, and a really wonderful server! But I would stay away from the Marin Sun's hamburger. All 3 of us ordered it, and gave it a B-. Perfectly cooked, but the meet was both tough and not that tasty! Fries were edible, but not great. Wish I'd thought to ask for a side salad instead! The "Pizza of March" (I love that they do this!)...they change out one pizza and one burger each month!) that our neighbors ordered looked better and they said they liked it! The outdoor seating area was amazing. Decked out with plants everywhere, tranquil pond, it feels like I'm immersed in a garden briefly taking my mind off of pandemic. We ordered fennel sausage pizza, rockfish ceviche and fried cauliflower. Pizza crust had a nice toast to it, fluffy but not too doughy, topped with savoury fennel sausage. Would recommend. Rockfish ceviche was alright. I found it to be not as flavourful as I was hoping, not enough bite from citrus. Fish texture was good, tender and soft. Cauliflower was bomb! Family invited me to Gather for my birthday meal a few days ago (yeah, they still count 'em even though I just hit 120 with this milestone). I guess it's kinda like death row, when you get that final meal before they pull the switch. But, I digress (and digest -- shout out, Lorenzo Neal). The salads were good sizes. While the little gems caesar lacked zest and flavor, it was large. The local lettuces, at 10, was a great buy. My daughter had made shakshouka for me, and hers is better. The version at Gather, for 18, was kinda bland and undersized. My kid loved the classic breakfast and I gotta say I think he ordered right (16). The mushroom pizza (25) was cheesy but, alas, flavorless. Even the generous amounts of red pepper flakes we added were of little help. Baletto Chardonnay at 15/glass was a generous pour and went well with the food (complemented, for those tracking at home). Service was uneven. Gather is a large space, and we sat outside. The day was a bit windy; while a number of people attempted to brave the elements, most ultimately retreated to the interior. We stuck it out. Might return, but likely not. Gather was a huge supporter of Kensington Eats and a community favorite during the pandemic. Their take-home roast chicken dinner broke records in January 2021 with almost 40 families participating. Having more than just my family of four with us to dine, it was an excellent opportunity to order additional dishes to eat family style... so we basically ordered the bottom half of their menu, which included Gather's signature grain bowl featuring seasonal veggies and carrot tahini, and a pan-seared ling cod with oyster mushrooms and smashed purple potatoes--both delicious and hearty. The stand out for the table, however, was their grilled bone-in pork chop with roasted root vegetables, balsamic mostarda, and champagne grapes. A perfect bite as the savory char framed the sweet and bitter flavors highlighting Gather's dedication to staying local, seasonal, and sustainable. Unfortunately, we were not informed via email and had to leave as we did not want the pre fixed meal. So fortunate to get here for brunch. I went with a few friends and we ordered a few items to everyone to share which included the Prather Ranch Burger, Breakfast Pizza, Fries, cuz sharing is caring and Bacon with Toast. First, if you're stuck in the 90s and have a flip phone, I'm gonna say you're screwed cuz the menu is done via QR code. Second, the food was absolutely great. I didn't get a picture of the burger, toast nor bacon cuz we were hungry and didn't have time. What I can say is that we orders the burger Ned rare and thus it was served. Then the breakfast pizza! Omg after two years of Keto, I was in carb heaven. The crust was soft, chewy and crisp while holing the toppings of cheese, caramelized onions, bacon and the egg. Friend chose this place b/c one friend is vegetarian and gluten free. Given that parameter I was surprised at the (somewhat) limited menu. The gluten free pizza was over cooked, crispy - not to my liking. We were outside, it was chilly. One employee offered to get us a heater. A different employee said we couldn't. We frequently had to ask for things: more water, salt/pepper, serving spoon for grain bowl,... My Caesar salad was uninteresting but fine. My wife and I were looking forward to a nice date night before a concert at the Greek and choose Gather to get a bite beforehand. The host was efficient and set expectations for a short wait although we were on time for our reservations. One waitstaff set us up with water and a drink order promptly which was delivered shortly after. We had our menus down as custom and several times I tried to catch what I thought was our server near the kitchen because she had all the tables near us. She was obviously not too busy to pace around, look at her machine, stare into space, talk with other customers, but waited about 15 minutes to take our order while we were a couple feet from her. We were politely waiting, but when she finally deigned to come over and take our order made a point to smirk and say, "Thanks for your patience". Seriously? The food was good, but not extraordinary. She never checked on us even though we wanted to purchase another drink. Finally got the check from her and promptly left. Check the precious attitude on this particular server in the future. We never leave less than 20% tip, but sure did this time. Glad we stopped by the TipSea and cleared the bad experience and went on to see a wonderful concert. Stopped by Gather for brunch with my partner and his parents while they were visiting and it was just the right fit. We were looking for a solid place to eat before we headed to the Berkeley Botanical Gardens and this was perfect. They have a number of brunch options for both those who like sweet or savory breakfast, ranging from classic breakfast (eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon & toast) to french toast with sweet strawberries and whipped cream. When we went in April 2022, they had Loco Moco on the menu as one of their specials which I really enjoyed because the broccolini was seasoned well and the gravy pulled the whole meal together. Next time I'll be sure to try to biscuits and gravy. We also got the Avocado Toast, which uses Acme bread and come with a healthy helping of pea shoots and edible flowers on top. Best thing on the menu: French Toast - this sweet treat will be sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. It usually comes with strawberries and house made whipped cream, but sometimes can be subbed with seasonal fruit like peaches or caramel apples. Ambiance - Bright and friendly restaurant with a urban rustic feel. There's seating both inside and out, but for most days, the wooden 4 person patio tables outside create the ideal Sunday brunch vibe. read more

Gather is one of my favorite restaurants in Berkeley. I can always count on amazing food, ambiance, and excellent service. We have come here for brunch with my mother-in-law, celebrated friends' birthdays, and even came here for both my kids' gender reveals after finding out I was pregnant. This was over 14 years ago and I still love coming back--it's only gotten better. The brussels sprouts, kale salad, fries, burgers, and their vegan tomato pizza (first thing I ever ate there and it was SO good) are delicious. There are also plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options. I love that you could sit inside or outside and both are equally cozy. Super kid and teen friendly too! read more

** The following review reflects my delivery experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** Such a Berkeley-centric name for such a Berkeley-centric restaurant. The name evokes images of communes where skinny hippies eat granola, alfalfa sprouts, and pot brownies. I doubt you'd find those items on the menu here. OK, maybe the sprouts. I just get an organic, locavore Chez Panisse-type vibe from the menu, and I haven't been inside the restaurant. I just decided to order dinner via Grubhub just to see if the advance praise I've heard was true. And of course, the ones praising Gather were skinny vegans who probably eat alfalfa sprouts for breakfast. Not that I'm stereotyping...much. But I have to say what I ordered was pretty darn tasty. The $22 Rocky's Organic Chicken Half was simply roasted, sprinkled with fresh herbs, squeezed with charred lemon, and clearly brined to bring out the succulence in the thoughtfully dissected pieces (photo: https://bit.ly/30I7PAL). The pleasant surprise was the thick romesco sauce which I ladled liberally over the poultry. Delicious meal, and attentive service. You can tell how farm fresh the ingredients are. The smashed potatoes are awesome for breakfast, as is the toast from a local bakery. We were looking for a great burger. This place had it. Very good indeed. Unfortunately, I can't recall when I've had as bad service. Sunday evening at 7:30 and the place was quite slow. I suppose our server (if you can call her that) was too busy doing side work but who knows? We sat for 15 mins before someone came and took or order. Then we sat there for close to 30 mins before the two basic (but delicious!!) burgers showed-up. A different server stopped to ask how things were when we were 75% done but felt like she happened to notice that the short girl forgot about us entirely. Then, one we were able to get the empty plates off our table, it took another 15 mins to have a server allow us to pay. There were other clear indications we were simple forgotten about. I still gave a nice tip of course, knowing some will make it to the kitchen. However, this sort of apathetic and just silly bad service takes them off my list forever. read more

The food was fresh and wonderful - we got the brussels sprouts and delicata squash (a highlight for me!) and I got the Burger of January which was absolutely delicious. Located in downtown Berkeley, this restaurant is absolutely delicious. I have frequented Gather on numerous occasions both with family and friends and the food has always been consistently great - Especially their Brunch menu! Ambience/Wait (4/5): Although normally seating can be a bit difficult to find, sometimes even being prompted to sit at the bar or wait quite a long time, the food is well worth it. The outdoor patio also has tons of greenery, string lights and heated lamps which is perfect for chilly Berkeley days, and outdoor dining. Food (5/5): My go to order is the breakfast pizza with egg on top, along with an assortment of meats. It is perfectly crispy, thin crust, gooey from the mozzarella with a bit of a kick in the sauce. The pizza although thin, is very filling and not too oily. I recommend ordering chili oil and red chili flakes on the side if you want to up the spice factor and juiciness of each slice. Another go to order of mine are the hot donuts which are stuffed with chocolate I can only describe as a mix of nutella and berry compote. They are served piping hot and topped with sprinkles of sugar and cinnamon - tasting like a small churro chocolate bite! Ultimately Gather is a great place to come for brunch although it can be on the pricier side. I definitely recommend sharing, because the portions are on the larger side.
