A great place for events, casual get-together, and everything between, Gather serves classic American fare with a clearly farm-to-table twist (judging from the amount of vegetables and vegan/vegetarian friendly dishes they serve). Their cocktails were great, although for those who have not had Mezcal before, the Luscious Melon would not be a recommendation. Otherwise, their pizzas and side dishes are quite good for sharing. Came here for a brunch with a group of 12 on a Saturday at 10:30AM. I had made a reservation a few weeks prior but it was surprisingly empty for brunch on a Saturday! We were seated immediately. I ordered the brunch pizza without bacon and the smashed breakfast potatoes. Both were so delicious! The potatoes were perfectly crispy but I wish they were seasoned more; however, with the addition of some salt and hot sauce, they were great. The pizza was also so good, especially the jammy egg on top! They also gave me some free soft serve since it was my birthday :) The only downside of the experience was that many of our coffee orders were mixed up and some folks who were lactose intolerant were given whole milk coffees even though they had ordered oat milk. Overall, I would definitely come back here for the food and vibes, but I'll be skipping the coffee next time! read more

I ordered a cafe au lait which was quite nice and my boyfriend ordered a bloody mary which he described as "good, but a little on the sweet side". For food, we ordered the potato soup, french toast, and croque madame. I loved the soup! It was so warm and comforting, just what I needed on a cold afternoon. The french toast was also divine - the apple and mascarpone really balanced the sweetness. The croque madame was just okay to me. The space is really beautiful with high ceilings, cozy wood, and plants everywhere. The only gripe I had with this restaurant is the music. Last night we took our party of 9 to Gather for a celebratory engagement dinner. Kate, our waitress, went above and beyond to make our experience fabulous! The outside covered patio room was cozy and warm despite the crazy rain outside. Our food was delicious, the cocktails unique and tasty and the manager herself brought out complimentary champagne, to our delight, to toast the happy couple! We were also given delicious cookies as a perfect way to end our meal. We felt welcomed and never rushed. I absolutely recommend Gather for a lovely dining experience. If you get lucky to have Kate to wait on your table, she will be more than happy to take photos! We came here for Sunday brunch, and it was super lively with live music and a full restaurant. We got the falafel and eggs, spicy tomato breakfast pizza, and two drinks from their charity menu. The ingredients here for all dishes definitely tasted high quality, fresh, and healthy, but the flavors were a little milder than I was expecting. My boss hosted our staff dinner here last Friday and everything was amazing. We had reservations for 5pm and the staff were so friendly and accommodating it was such a nice warm welcome. It was happy hour when we arrived so we ordered a few glasses of wine which were amazing. We also ordered a bunch of starters to share. The rockfish ceviche?! *chef's kiss* you can taste every ingredient, it was so fresh and refreshing on the palate. The fig salad was something different as I had never had figs but boy, was it delicious! You can tell every ingredient is handpicked and so fresh. This was a great place with some interesting toppings for pizza. We were greeted at the front by some friendly waiters and at first, we were uncomfortable sitting indoors since concerns about COVID, so the waiters accommodated us and moved us outside. Unfortunately, the outdoor seats were super cold, but the waiters were so nice to once again move us to a seat near an outdoor heater. Also, just as a side note, parking can be a bit hard to find depending on the time of the day. Mostly it's just roadside parking. We parked in downtown and walked over. We ordered three whole pizzas for my group of three because we had two guys who can eat a lot. We totally underestimated the sizes of the pizza because we ended up with so much leftover pizza. We ended up taking them home in compostable boxes which was great! We started out with a sweet and spicy cauliflower appetizer. It was quite delicious with a good balance between spicy and sweet. We then moved on to the pizzas which consisted of a sausage pizza one with peaches as a topping, and another with squash as a topping. I think they might have a revolving menu though, because I checked recently and the peach and squash pizzas are no longer served. The peach and squash combos sounded so weird at first, but they were great! The sweetness of the peaches was actually a great compliment to the rest of the pizza. The sweetness wasn't overpowering either. The sausage pizza was the most "normal" out of all the pizzas but we liked the other two pizzas much more. Even though the pizzas were pretty unique, they didn't exactly stand out as the best pizzas I've ever had. By the way, there are gluten free crust options in case anyone has dietary restrictions. The price was pretty high, but I think the friendly service made the visit pretty worth it. I think I might come back for a visit if they offer some new interesting pizzas! read more

I wish the cauliflower pieces were a little smaller and crispier, but they were still so good. 3 stars: The garden vegetable soup was my least favorite dish. It was very bland and tasted like vegetables floating around in water. ENTREES 5 stars: We decided to add mushrooms (extra $4) to our spicy tomato pizza. Best decision ever. The serve was attentive until our food came and then he went M.I.A. He didn't bother to check up on us after the food was delivered to see if everything was okay, or if we needed anything. My drink sat empty from just after the food arrived until we were ready for our check. Everyone's drink was empty within minutes of the food arriving. It was hot today 80s so it was pretty hot inside too, the room temp water on the table wasn't cutting it. I would have loved a refill on my ice tea and maybe some ice for the water. When he did bring the ice tea he failed to bring the sugar I'd ask for the first time around. And when splitting the tabs was 50/50 or not at all. It's 2023 I'm sure you could itemize it. read more

I had such high hopes for Gather and was so excited for weekend brunch since it's been on my list of places. It was surprisingly not busy on a Saturday morning. I liked the ambiance of the place and the detail in wood furnishings. First, the service is excellent and I really loved all the servers. They had wonderful and fun personalities, which made us feel so welcomed. Second, the presentation of food is so lovely and a real artistic foodie treat to see. The menu is a standard brunch with a bit of variety. I had chose the sausage and biscuit gravy. I was a bit surprised with the darker color in gravy and it must have been due to the mixture of spices incorporated into the dish. I loved the sunny side eggs on top since I'm a huge fan of the yolk. I thought the flavor was alright and overall enjoyed my dish. My boyfriend had the burger and I definitely stole some of those fries. I like the crispiness and the generous portions of fries. My boyfriend said that it was a typical burger. I think maybe if I had ordered a typical breakfast than maybe I'd would have enjoyed the food experience a bit more. The prices for dishes were on the pricer side and I'm not sure if the food lived up to the value of the price. We ordered a pitcher of mimosas for the table, which we all enjoyed. This place has really gone downhill the last few years. It used to be one of my favorite places in Berkeley. I loved the menu, the variety, the atmosphere, and the service. This was my first trip back since the pandemic, and I was really disappointed. We were there for dinner around 7pm on a Friday night, and the place felt empty. We used to actually have to get a reservation to eat here. Sometimes we would grab a spot at the bar because the wait was too long. Now, I'm sure you could walk in during their peak and get a table right away. I guess everyone else figured it out before we did. The tables are all spread out now, and it gives the place a really lonely, empty, sad vibe (the tables used to be packed in). The menu was underwhelming compared to what it used to be. The appetizers were bland (what happened to the beef tartare?), and the waitress had no idea what was on the menu. I remember a nice large, tender pork chop. Now you get a few small, dry bits of pork tenderloin for the same price. My friend got the flank steak, and it was a bit better than the pork, but still way overcooked for medium-rare. I used to come here for dates, birthdays, and family gatherings over the years. I don't think I'll be coming back. It's sad when good places go downhill. I'm nostalgic for the old Gather. read more

Gather came up on a list of ten places to eat when seeing a show at the Berkeley Repertory Theater. I'm on a new eating plan and Gather seemed perfect: I could avoid carbs and cheese, while my mom could get a cheeseburger or pizza for her casual pre-show birthday celebration. Cal isn't in session and the whole town is a morgue. I could not believe how few people were on the streets at 5:30PM. The parking is very easy: we went into a garage basement, where we saw three other cars. It's a flat fee of $5, which to anyone living in a city is a welcome surprise. The interior is casually elegant with an enormous open plan kitchen with gorgeous green tile, sparkly fancy appliances, and plants (like a topiary) lining the top of the half-moon shaped kitchen. We had a wonderful server, but everyone who works here is young, attractive, and personable. You order via QR code (still!) but it works better than most. The only problem is that if you close out your tab, it's hard to order more. So best to leave a tab open until the end if you think you might order dessert or another cocktail. I had the celery root puree (vegan, gluten-free) and it was divine. I could eat that soup daily. We shared the trendy vegetable appetizer---spicy cauliflower--and while I eat a lot of cauliflower appetizers, I'd place this in the top 10%. My ceviche also in the top 10% of ceviche I've ever had. Mom's burger looked good. The fries didn't look fabulous but she said they were above average. My friend, who used to live closeby, ordered one of the grain bowls she remembers fondly from her Berkeley years. As it was my mother's 82nd, we had to order dessert. Two options exist on the (still) limited menu: warm bread pudding and three salty chocolate chip cookies. The online menu said the bread pudding was "out of stock," but they turned out to have one and even put a candle on it because I told them it was her birthday. There is a happy hour drink menu, but the Manhattan isn't on the list. A great Manhattan for $12, with a mix of bourbon and rye. My friend ordered the Paloma, for the same price, and liked it a lot. All I can say is that I wish we had a Gather in Santa Barbara or Santa Monica. I'd go back in a heartbeat. Great healthy food, lovely setting, excellent service, and terrific prices. For three appetizers, a burger, an entree grain bowl, and four cocktails (Mom and I each had a Manhattan and split a third), plus a dessert, the pre-tip tab came to $100. Fantastic. read more

The interior design is so aesthetic with the hanging lights and the outdoor patio area is bright and airy, perfect for warmer spring days. The service was amazing, the servers were accommodating and kind when we needed to add an additional table to fit everything we had ordered. Here's what we tried + my personal ratings Butternut squash soup $9 - this was such a hearty spiced soup that made me feel like I was drinking a cozy thanksgiving with each spoonful. 10/10 Avocado and sprout toast $12 - the generous avocado purée and seasoning topped with sprouts all atop a crunchy piece of toasted baguette was delightfully refreshing and tasty 10/10 Marin sun farms cheeseburger + avocado $26 - good burger and fries, well balanced ingredients, tasted as expected. 8/10 Spicy tomato pizza $23 - THIS spicy tomato sauce and tangy puréed olives were the perfect combo on this thin crust pizza. One of the best pizzas I've ever had, the flavors were perfect now I know why this is their most highly rated menu item on Yelp! 11/10 if you order only one thing from this restaurant you have to try this! Duck confit hash $26 - tender duck leg, with perfectly seasoned potatoes and poblano chile , red onion, topped with a slow cooked egg and hollandaise sauce, absolutely delicious 10/10 French toast $16 - with cinnamon apples, whipped mascarpone, and apple syrup drizzle topped with pretty edible flowers, this delight for the eyes was also a delight for our sweet tooth. According to my bf this was "the best French toast" he's ever had I think the whipped mascarpone may have won him over more than anything. You must try this if you have a sweet tooth! 11/10 Broccoli rabe and mushroom $25 - with a leek cream sauce, thyme, and lemon zest, this pizza has a roasted veggie aroma. The toppings make a great combination for a white sauce pizza 10/10 The drinks we shared were pretty normal and met our expectations but did not exceed them: Latte Rooibos tea two pretty mimosas (grapefruit and blood orange) I'd definitely return for their brunch menu in the future but I'd also love to try their lunch and dinner menus because they have a unique twist on most of their menu items that isn't found elsewhere! read more

I've even told many people to go here just for this pizza. Instead on this recent visit, the crust was pretty tasteless and dry. And... the toppings were just not of the same caliber as I remember. Overall, it was a waste of money and I left hungry. My friend, however, loved her burger and appetizer. So, it may be that Gather is no longer the place for gluten free pizza. I've come here for brunch a couple times, and each time I've been pretty impressed by the quality of the food! The interior of the restaurant is really nice and modern, with some fancy decorations on the ceiling and walls. The waiters are all very responsive and respond pretty immediately when you ask for something. Although the food is a bit pricey, the ingredients are fresh and definitely high quality. When I've come here I usually get the breakfast pizza, which is a pizza that has eggs on top along with various meats. The pizza is very flavorful and is not too oily, with a well-made crust. It usually doesn't take too long for it to be served, and I recommend eating it with chili oil as well! It's always served hot and the cheese melts in your mouth. Overall, it's a nice place to come for brunch even though it is a little pricey. If you want food with fresh and high quality ingredients, this is a good place! read more

We ordered coffee and orange juice and later the falafel brunch and the French toast. Food came out pretty quickly and looked amazing. They put some effort into presentation. Tasted great too. The falafel was topped with eggs and a bit of salad and came in a nice romesco sauce. Also had a side of bacon which could have been a bit crispier but still good. In my search for a farm to table restaurant for a party I am hosting, I reached out to the email associated with the events section. I was responded to immediately by Jodi (GM and events coordinator) with a cc to Lucy. They immediately reserved the date and time for my party size- great! But in my initial inquiry, I had various questions that went unanswered. I thanked them for the quick reservation but proceeded to re-submit my inquiries for the gathering I wanted to take place just to make sure all would be set. That was Feb 21st. On Feb 25th, I circled back the email to both Jodi and Lucy and have yet to receive a correspondence from either of them on my inquiries. I called and left their business a message 4 days ago to give them one last chance and yet again, no response 12 days later. If this is indicative of what their attention to potential new customers is, I am no longer interested in bringing my whole party to this venue. I've canceled my party's reservation as it's seemingly so more important to this venue to get a reservation than to correspond and ensure their customers a respectful and attentive environment. It's too bad that a local business would act in such a way. Business loss for sure. read more
