Fish & Chips (Beer-Battered Cod) with Ripped Fingerling Potatoes and Aioli
    Kelly N.

It was my second time eating at a Eureka! in the Bay and this location did not disappoint! The fingerling potatoes were bomb and the garlic wasn't overpowering! The servers were really sweet! I was there at night, so the lighting was warm. I would just say the chairs were kind dirty ...

Randomly dropped by here for a quick lunch. The food on happy hour was decent! We got salmon and steak frites which I forgot to take a pic. Service was good. The place is super spacious. Not sure if I was super impressed by the food.

Came by for lunch today with my family and had a good time, though the experience was a bit rough around the edges. Eureka is a restaurant with indoor only seating, though it does have an indoor patio area that opens to the street. They take reservations so I'd recommend doing that if possible. They've got a ton of beers on draft to choose from, and also offer a taster option which I did to try a few different beers. I wish the tasters were bigger, and wish they gave you something to track the different beers, because it's easy to get them mixed the way they serve them one-by-one. I wish they served them all at once as well, because I received my beers piecemeal, with one showing up 10 minutes after my other beers had arrived. On the food front, I got the al pastor fish tacos and tried the fish & chips. The Al pastor fish tacos were excellent, but the fries it came with were stale. The fish & chips were ok, a bit bland but well cooked. Like the beers, all of our food came out very piecemeal, with one item coming 10 minutes after everything else had come. Overall, it felt like the service was a bit hit or miss; the staff is nice but it was hard to get their attention, which I would attribute to them being spread thin. I think if you're not in a hurry this place has some good lunch specials and good beers to try, just be ready for a slow experience.

Been here twice, and it's a great location. Literally in the middle of downtown Berkeley. UC Berkeley being close by & Berkeley City College few steps away. Also, right off of the BART stop. PERFECT! They got great deals for Happy Hour. Those HH burgers are amazing. We've also had other appetizers there before & it's amazing as well. Definitely, a place to stop by for lunch or HH when in downtown Berkeley. The workers are nice as well!

We came to Eureka! Just to grab a few little bites to satisfy our savory craving. We got the pretzel bites and the Mac and cheese balls. The Mac and cheese is always the stand out with the yummy and slightly spicy fried balls. Staff was incredibly attentive and super kind! Oour service was constantly checking up on us. Highly recommend visiting midday when the weather is nice, since the whole wall/window was open and it was greatly ventilated!

Just missed happy hour! The truffle cheese sauce was awesome n loved it, but the cheese on the fries didn't melt? What's that mean? Lol.... The wings were extra crispy the way I like them!! Reasonably priced! The drink flight was hit n miss. 2 of the whiskey tasted like blah, n the other 2 were great. The Pinot noir was a miss, but the Chardonnay was great tasting. Don't recommend the whiskey flight, for the $$$ There's a lot of seating, but wooden n uncomfortable... which is what a lot of places in Berkeley do... so average seating. There's clothe napkins n very nice silverware! Good for date night! The server was nice and attentive! Very fluid conversationalist!!! I like that in a server! Close to Bart & street parking nearby! Clean restrooms! Child friendly, but not baby friendly!!!

Tried the Jalapeño Egg Burger with tots. The burger was cooked medium and the egg over medium exactly as requested. The tots were crispy and the portion size was generous. Everything was good but didn't quite have that wow factor that would bring me back.

Ugh I hate giving 3s but I must stick w the yelp credo and be honest. Started off bad w only one server and one bartender on the floor, server was super nice so no hate to her, hate to the managerial staff for leaving her up a creek like that. There was a manager(?) helping occasionally, but clearly they were very understaffed. Took a while to get seated even though there were empty tables available. Dirty soda was yummy, and the burger was good, but the buns were very odd? And like the bottom bun was already soggy and splitting by the time it got to my table. The fish and chips...I mean come on that plate is 75% fries! Gotta give credit that the fish were battered very well and not greasy, but besides that, mid. I usually fuck w eureka but this was a bummer!

It never goes wrong to go Eureka! For burgers! We went for St Patrick's Day and ordered a special burger with wagyu beef patty marinated in Guinness. You can truly taste Guinness in it. One of the best burgers I ever had!

The food was amazing. The atmosphere was chill with a great view. Ordered off the daily specials menu which is also on the weekends. Had the burger and grilled chicken sandwich. Bloody Marys were average. Our server was great and attentive.

Are there typically long lines to be seated? Is it large enough to seat a table of 6?

It definitely depends on the night you go. On the weekends it gets pretty busy around 7ish (especially if there's a concert nearby), but most weekdays are okay.

    2-6 pm and then 9-close

    Is there gluten free option?

We have our “naked” option which takes away the bun and serves your choice of item on a bed of arugula with our house-made lemon vinaigrette.

    How are the vegan options?

Veggie Beet Burgerhousemade red beet and kidney bean patty / pickles / tomato / red onion / arugula / lemon vinaigrette, Watermelon salad and a few appetizers as well.

That said I'm occasionally inspired to go check out the local watering holes for a good pour, some food if possible, and just to be in the presence of the human pulsation. Walking into Tallboy on a Thursday afternoon was a bit like Nirvana for me. There is a comforting vibe of neighborhood and after work people shedding responsibility and "toe the lineness" and transitioning to pondering true meaning and the other side of the elliptical bend over nicely crafted cocktails and HOTDOGS! I am a hotdog fiend, and Tallboy has a very creative range on the menu that does not disappoint. From a basic onions/mustard, an Elote Dog, an a Coney Islandesque (it has chili) version. Some folk go to bar and line up shots (or craft cocktails). At Tallboy you can do that AND line up their hotdogs which I intend on doing in the very near future. The pleasantries don't stop at the food (there are other delicious snack items on their menu to choose from too). Tallboy has a fully stocked bar, and the menu has a list of really unique and delicious signature craft cocktails. I'm not a Mezcal drinker, but I ended up dubiously ordering their Guava Martini which to my smokey surprise is made with Mezcal. I stayed with the smokey fruitiness of this Guava Martini as it was my mistake that I did not read in the description it is made with Mezcal, and ended up chasing it with their Tamarindo Cocktail which also has Mezcal. To those who really enjoy Mezcal the Tallboy Guava Martini and the Tamarindo Cocktail do not disappoint. Both have that deep Smokey Mezcal essence, but cut with the fruit sweetness. I personally think the Tamarindo balances well with the Mezcal. The Guava Martini the Mezcal comes through stronger, but both are just the tonic to release any existential pinging going on in your head. If you really want to kick in the hyperdrive pair either of these with an Elote Dog. I had their Deli Dog which sufficed. I think the Deli Dog would pair better with their standard Martini, but hey let's us not bring that snobbiness into Tallboy. Tallboy has an element of cloak and dagger or secret treehouse club about it. What I mean here is there is no signage on the outside (please keep it that way!). When you walk past all you see is this quaint beigeish/yellow brick façade of an establishment which begs you to press your face to the glass and scan what in the blazes is going on in here! Before you know it you are caught in the Tallboy tractor beam, and you find yourself sitting at the bar with some kind of craft drank and hotdog pondering the space and the very nice old fashioned wainscoting painted a shade of green circa 1930 (my description of winning in life). The cadre of bartenders are all really pleasant folk, very attentive (checking in with you to see if you need another round, hotdog, or snack), have tight shaker skills, and they know their craft and the menu. Tallboy also has SLUSHIES, and I did not do a deep dive on them, but I'm positive they may/do put spirits in them; or not. Also I noticed other patrons with a beautiful enticing thing that looked like an ice cream sundae milkshake hybrid (it had what looked like whipped cream on top) in on old timey soda fountain ice cream goblet. This could be a craft cocktail they make with the slushie, but major props for serving it in that goblet. I will investigate on my next visit which I intend to be very soon. Tallboy is the kind of bar establishment I could easily adopt as my after work living room for a couple of hours everyday.

Can't quite describe it but it didn't feel like an SF bar, felt more open and like a community watering whole. On to the food and drinks. I'm vegetarian so was so excited to try the dogs - which are vegan. And I may be biased but you cannot tell that you're missing out on anything with all the flavor packed combos. The bun was fluffy and soft and you have multiple fun themed options to choose from. My partner and I ended up getting the deli dog and truffle meltdown. Deli was perfect - classic mix of spice and crunch with the spicy brown mustard and giardiniera peppers. And the truffle meltdown was so savory and decadent - totally different flavor profiles from each dog! We were only going to grab one drink but the menu was so inventive we ended up getting two. I ordered the banana hammock (which comes with a fire show) and espresso martini slushee which was is up there with the frozen Irish coffees I've had in New Orleans. Tupper and Reed still stands tall above everyone else. I stopped in on a Saturday evening, feeling pretty mellow. After I arrived, a band started up that reminded me of the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. You can't beat the ambiance, since this was an old music store, and the please is littered with antique record players and instruments. There are some negative reviews here about rude, more accurately, unresponsive bartenders, and I don't think they get what this place is all about. If you want a chatty, friendly bartender, go to an Irish pub. This place is all about creating unique concoctions in volume. Having said that, I'll tell you a story. In March 2019, I was with a chatty bartender here, since it was a quiet night. I was looking at the vast array of bottles, and noticed something that said "Buffalo Trace" but looked different from their usual bottle. I asked her what it was, and she didn't know. It had about three fingers left at the bottom, so she looked at me mischievously and said, "wanna finish it with me?" So we did. Turns out, that 375 ml bottle was worth about $300. It was one of their experimental batches, made with oats in 2002. I found a bottle online in England and got it shipped here. Best whiskey I've ever had.

We heard this building has been many different iterations over the years, but happy to have found this spot in Berkeley for a fun happy hour with friends. We enjoyed the wine flight (choice of 4 wines), each with a nice pour, and shared the spinach dip with chips. We also enjoyed an espresso martini to cap off the evening. The staff were super friendly, and the lounge was filled with what seemed like regulars. The lounge couches were super comfy and it was an overall very relaxing yet intimate experience. I would definitely come back again with a group, or even stop by for a date night. Parking is a bit tough in this area, but there is street parking (if lucky enough to find it) and garages nearby.
