The lighting is dim and romantic. Definitely not conducive to sexy food photos…read more The waitstaff was speedy and friendly. The acorn has been on my list for YEARS! So to say I was extremely excited is an understatement. We ordered the Sourdough (with House Cultured Butter, Vancouver Island Sea Salt) Shiitake (with Soy Braised Squash, Kelp, Ginger,Lemongrass) Cabbage with Brown Butter and Pomme Dauphinois Harvest which was house made ravioli stuffed with chicken of the woods. For dessert the Plum with Fig Leaf, Miso Honeycomb and Thai Basil Sourdough was good. No arguments there. The shiitake was fine, palatable. The cabbage and potato were very bland and made me question why the Acorn is so hyped. It was so bland i didn't finish it. Keep in mind SERVING SIZES ARE TINY. The ravioli were practically inedible the chicken of the woods was beyond overly salted and the pasta wasn't cooked. We joked that al dente was at least touching water. This pasta has never heard of water. Easily one of if not THE WORST PASTA I've ever had at a restaurant in the past few years. Thank goodness the plum dessert was yummy. Very good. But truly I don't understand why people rave about The Acorn. I love food. Im a vegetarian but it's hard to comprehend why it's so hyped. Maybe there was a new cook? Maybe it was an off night? Crossed off my Vancouver bucket list. It took me a while to write this review because I frankly was in shock the contrast between the actual food vs the lore it has around town. The highlights were a basic sourdough and a well balanced dessert. That just feels so wrong.

This is a vegetarian restaurant and we had the ten course tasting menu ( which sounds like a lot but most dishes are 3-4 bites). Everything is seasonal so when we were there in June the dishes included asparagus, potatoes, leeks, rhubarb, etc. and every dish was amazing. The service was also very attentive, including explaining in detail what each dish was when it was served. Delightful. This is a once in a lifetime experience.

Went with my family for a bday brunch. So for anyone who doesn't know, the Hafla experience is an AYCE experience. Not the kind where everyone in the restaurant is walking around, selecting all of their foods to put on their plates and then walking back to their own table with it. For this experience, each person chooses one main entree for themselves and then the restaurant brings a whole bunch of other dishes to accompany that main entree. Everyone at the table has to participate in the Hafla. You cannot have 3 people ordering Hafla, and 4 people ordering from the regular A la Carte menu. It's meant to be a family style sharing experience. Oh my goodness. What an experience this was. They brought sooo many dishes to the table. If I could make one suggestion to the restaurant to improve the experience for their customers, it would be to get bigger tables for the Hafla! Holy smokes...there was sooo much food on the table. At one point, the waitress came out with some baskets of pita bread to go with our food and asked where to put them. Ummm...wherever you can find space?! We had lots of leftovers by the end of the meal. I think my daughter said she counted at least 15 boxes of leftovers! This wasn't just All You Can Eat. This was More Than You Can Eat, cuz we were all super full from everything that they brought to us, and we never needed to ask for anything to be refilled as we couldn't even finish what they'd brought to us initially. What a feast! As for the food itself. I think the one thing that kinda fell short a bit was the Chickpea fries. I'd had these once before from their food truck a few years ago. I really enjoyed it back then. This time however, the Chickpea fries were not as impressive. Everything else on the table though was excellent. I don't know where else in Vancouver you can get a plant based AYCE meal, and this one was very impressive. Some standouts for me were the Cauliflower of Life, Hatzil Baladi (charred eggplant), and Baba Ganoush. A few of us ordered some drinks and those were pretty impressive as well. My daughter's Lavender Lychee Lemonade looked so lovely and refreshing. For myself I ordered a Chai Latte made with oat milk, and that was excellent. Oh, and you know how sometimes restaurants have menus on their websites and the menus don't match what's on the printed menu in the actual restaurant? Well this was the first time I was actually happy to see that the menu in the restaurant was different cuz online it says that the Hafla costs $42 per person but when we got to the restaurant it turned out to be only $40 per person. In this day and age, when things are usually only ever getting more expensive, it was a real treat to see that something had actually gone down in price for once! Highly recommend this place. I'll be back sometime for sure to try their regular, non AYCE menu!

Japanese & French cuisine? sign me up! @restaurantyugo you can find modern Japanese fare w/ French inspired ingredients. I've been wanting to check it out for the longest time, and I can say I left satisfied. I find it rare nowadays that I go into a new restaurant I've never been and leave happy with every single dish I ordered. I also love their woody interior and cozy ambiance. The staff were attentive as well. It's located in the heart of main street so I will definitely be back soon. What we ordered (in order of our fave): 1) Grilled Octopus-the oyster mushroom in this was venture winner imo 2) Scallop Ceviche- incredibly fresh and vibrant flavours 3) Lobster Squid Ink Risotto- loved the texture of the risotto; good chunk of lobster but it was a bit salty for my preference 4) Unagi Aburi Oshi-- not the best I've had but it was solid comfort food

Service was very good, despite being busy, all the tables were full, our cups are never empty for too long. Being a cold night, they were thoughtful & offered hot green tea (o-cha). The restaurant was cozy however the chairs will need to be replaced as the chairs were peeling. It didn't matter to me as the food was very good. For appetizers we ordered the following with our friends - King Salmon & Albacore Tuna Crudo Big chunks of sashimi with a very good dressing, no need wasabi or soy sauce to go with it. That dressing was enough - Soy Shrimp Deviled Eggs, it was delicious & everyone agreed that I had the best looking appt, the presentation was very "stylish" - Chicken Tarte - pieces of chicken wrapped & baked in Filo pastry with fresh salad in a light vinaigrette dressing. My friend said it was delicious. For mains - Sushi Omakase - Sushi selection by the chef - it was fresh & yummy - Seafood Risotto- Seafood was not over cooked especially the Hokkaido scallop, the risotto was well cooked... I enjoyed it. - Osso Buco - hubby liked that espete Dashi Polenta, it was different & good For Dessert, we all had the Matcha cheesecake, it was very good & light. We will return again to try their food.

Everything is cooked to perfection with great flavor, and the tare (teriyaki) sauce is really solid. Some of my favorites are the garlic stems wrapped in pork, the chicken thigh with leeks, and the chicken wings. Not sure if it's just me, but everything tastes even better with a beer after each bite. If you want something more filling, the carbonara udon was great too. It's also really cool to sit near the grill and watch the chefs cook, everything comes out surprisingly fast, so there's not much waiting.

For the Temaki promotion, there was only one staff member assembling hand rolls, while the yakitori grill station operated separately. Even so, the execution at the temaki station felt inconsistent and rushed. The nori was not properly toasted and turned soggy quickly, losing the intended texture almost immediately. At a premium dine-in price, that crisp contrast is a core part of the experience. The rice was uneven and overly moist, which affected overall texture and balance. Even when ordering one round at a time, it was difficult to distinguish between the chicken and pork components. The wagyu and garlic beef were the only real standouts and were well executed. The space itself is quite tight, with limited room for coats or bags, making seating feel cramped and not well thought through for dine-in comfort. The warabi mochi dessert portion was also very small. On the service side: The Yelp reservation system was smooth and convenient. Staff were polite in person. However, when I called later to ask about a personal item potentially left at the booth, there was clear difficulty understanding the request, suggesting a communication gap. Overall, while some items were executed well, the consistency and attention to detail did not meet expectations. At this price point--even with the HH menu--execution needs to be significantly more precise for the experience to feel justified.
