    Calamachick Burrito
    John C.

I was on Main Street with a friend. We were looking for a vegetarian restaurant, and after looking at few places, decided to eat at Chickpea. I've eaten at the food truck before, but this was my first time at the restaurant. Nothing too remarkable about the space. I ended up trying two things: - Chickpea Fries: Good. Crispy, bordering on a bit too hard, but tasty. - Calamachick Burrito: Good. Tempura oyster mushrooms were really good, and packed tight into the burrito. It was big enough that I decided to only eat half and kept the other half for another meal. Service on the other hand was not great. We were there at around 2:30pm, so maybe between the busy meal times, but I got the feeling the servers just didn't want to be there. It wasn't busy at that time of day, but the servers made no effort to be friendly or attentive. So overall, the food was good, but the service wasn't. Given my experience, I would've preferred just going to the food truck.

Brunch set for 2 people was very good.

For vegan food, the brunch set for two people was very good. Food items were flavorful, and portion size was generous. I especially enjoyed the scrambled tofu. The omelet had vegan cheese in it, but it was too sticky and salty. The texture was unpleasant. The blueberry pancake with jam was tasty and very filling. The salad was excellent. The vegan bacon tasted artificial, but I kind of expected that. The home fries were crispy. I enjoyed the casual cottage-like ambiance.

"Chick steak" platter with the Saba Special.

The fries are made of chickpeas. And they are incredible. So is the variety of the vegan menu. I went for a platter with the "chick steak" as my protein. I don't know how they did it, but it smelled like steak and almost tasted like it - it had the colour, the texture, and seasonings - and it was wonderful. The platter also came with salad, hummus, and pita. The portion was too huge to finish. I washed it down with a Saba Special, which was a slush of hibiscus lemonade mixed with ginger beer. It made my mouth tingle. Service was friendly and helpful, and the place has major artsy vibes.

Hearty plates loaded with plenty of delicious food, Chickpea is one of the best vegan restaurants I've ever been to. This restaurant was recommended to me by non-vegan friends so you know it's good because it makes even meat-eaters excited to come back. The interior of the restaurant has a cute rustic vibe. It could be crowded if busy, and the food takes some time, but judging from the food alone I would definitely order here multiple times. The menu is full of new food names as I am not familiar with a lot of the mediterranean dishes. However, the menu is pretty straightforward and has cute images to help you decide what you want. The chickpea steak tasted like well done meat while still being chewy and while the poached egg didn't necessarily taste like egg, it's delicious in its own way. The egg completely won me over because it had great presentation on imitating a runny egg when I cut into it.

Chickpea is a vegan/vegetarian restaurant located on Main Street. They have an outdoor patio which is perfect for the summer and a variety of cocktails and summer drinks. Their service was pretty good - fast and friendly. For drinks we got their non-alcohoic pina colada, it was really good! Exactly what you expect from a pina colada. For appetizers I got their chickpea fries which were delicious! It came with a sweet and spicy sauce which was delicious. The fries itself were not super crispy but they were thick and flavourful. The fries were also gluten-free. For mains, they have you choose a style and then choose a main. So for the style I went with their rice bowl with shawarma at the main. The quantity of the food was HUGE!! Definitely bang for your buck. The shawarma was also gluten-free and were made of soy curls, sautéed onions, curry, sumac & coriander. For someone who is not vegan, this was pretty good. It didn't taste the same but the flavours were really good. My friend got the falafel platter which was really good as well! I would definitely go back to try their burgers next time :)

Two hummus plates, each come with salad and pita. Entree served on hummus.

Huge portions, wonderful flavor, fun vegan and gluten free options, overall 12/10 would recommend For the average person (the hummus plate option at least) = 2 meals easily. The hummus itself is perfection, and for the "cauliflower of life" main entree note it is a whole heckin cauliflower!!! Side salads are super flavorful too, could've had 20. Big yum. Fairy baklava was good, small portion, I wouldn't believe it was vegan ice cream if you told me!!! Inside was super cozy, fun decor makes you feel like you're in a mildly psychedelic nature scene so we felt right at home. Staff was super personable too and there wasn't a wait (lots of seating). Drinks had heavy pours too which was nice!

The food here was amazing! I was blown away at how realistic the vegan poached egg was. When you cut it open, the "yolk" comes out like a real egg... definitely didn't expect that and it was a pleasant surprise. Portions were large but it was a bit pricey. Taste was definitely there though. It was very busy, hard to flag the servers down, but they were very friendly. Hoping to be back soon to enjoy their hafla (which looks insane)! One thing they can improve on is the Turkish coffee. I stirred mine and ended up drinking some of the coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup...

Yum! This is the kind of vegan food that makes me consider going vegan, haha! I got the Calamachik Platter, the Chickpea Fries are so so so good! Salad was also super yummy and they have great hummus too. I ordered again a few weeks later but tried the falafel platter - the falafel was pretty dry and not very flavourful. Didn't visit in person so I can't say much about the interior of the restaurant. They don't seem to use peanuts in the restaurant, and were helpful on the phone when I had questions about my allergy. I think they do use tree nuts so that is something to consider. Worth a try!

Literally one of the best vegan breakfasts I've ever had, and I've been vegan for a decade. The cocktails are also so fun that it was hard to decide between them. The menu is vast, illustrated, and creative. Staff is very kind and accommodating. It was hard not to just look around because there were so many cute decorations and vibey touches to the place. Honestly couldn't ask for somewhere better. I'll come here again and again.

I have been to chickpea many times. I have seen it expanding and that is just because of the yummy ,fresh, super gorgeous vegan food. And the quantity of food is huge that small appetite people can make two meals out of one. I love how the fries are cubes and not long strips. Vegan meat in any of the dishes goes so well that you want to keep eating. My puff pastry was so crunchy and good mix of veggies. Please try some of their cocktails as the herbs and garnishing is so unique to each drink. The vibe is chilled and at busy hours, it does get crowded and loud but most of the times it's quite and easy. My favourite part is the beautiful and inclusive environment of the whole place. So welcoming and warm.

A great place for vegan food in Vancouver with lots of options! We got the kasum hummus plate and thought the portion sizes were quite large. They also have free refills of the pita bread which allows us to make sure that none of the delicious hummus goes to waste. We also got a side of the chickpea fries which were a bit small for the price but very tasty. Highly recommend for vegan food!

A must stop for brunch in Vancouver. Make sure you come hungry, the portions here are big. Lots of options on the menu for all types of breakfasts. We had their play on eggs benny the eggs benechick w/ lox & the truffled mushrooms, a burger (spicy halloumi), and a side of hummus and all left with leftovers. Definitely recommend splitting one or two things.

Ok ok, what's better than driving to Canada to eat vegan food, I'll tell you .. driving to Canada to eat vegan food while meeting new vegan friends! We decided to meet up at Mila Plant-Based, 100% vegan restaurant in the downtown area sort of right in-between Downtown Eastside, Science World, and Gastown. The restaurant has a lovely, quaint ambiance, feels very welcoming upon entering. The bathroom was .. well, posh! I don't normally make a point to comment on bathroom decor, while average in size, I felt like I was being upgraded to First Class lol. Ok, moving right along .. lol They have two menus, a Weekend Brunch Menu and, for all other hours, a Lunch/Dinner Menu, ..we ordered from the Weekend Brunch Menu. I had the Bibimbap Bowl - rice bowl with Yo Egg, mushroom bacon, kimchi, tempura yam, cucumber, carrot, gochujang sauce. This bowl had many layers of unique flavors all married perfectly in every exquisite bite, I say this very sincerely! My wife ordered the Pina Colada Pancakes - pancakes, toasted coconut syrup, cashews, cocktail cherries, rum-candied pineapple, mint. Each bite easily lived up to the the decadence displayed in the included image. We absolutely have to find our way back to Mila to try their Lunch/Dinner menu as it includes some amazing sounding options such as, Feta Stuffed Date - date, feta, pistachio, olive oil, maldon salt, ABURI LOX OSHI - carrot lox, aburi sauce, shiso, serrano, 6 pieces, Tuna Crispy Rice - watermelon akami tuna, sushi rice, lime kewpie mayo, green onion, sesame seeds, 3 pieces, and much more. We had quite a few options to choose from regarding where to meet for brunch, with every option sounding wonderful in their own way. Ultimately, we decided on Mila because of their unique, fresh and inspiring sounding dishes and yeah, they did not disappoint. Thanks so much for dropping by and reading this review. Do yourself a favor and extend the same courtesy to Mila by ... dropping by .. and enjoying some amazing tasty food.

An added crunch and some true delicious flavor!! The crust, being GF and the specific ingredients, led it to be quite crunchy, but I love crunchy crusts. I hadn't had lunch but a few hours prior so I had half the pizza at dinner, than half before bed after drinks! Yum!!! My husband had the Samsara Sausage pizza. He said it was just okay. In the Bay Area we have Shizen/Tane and which I can safely say are still pretty different from Vegan Shoku. (Both are so good!!). Vegan Shoku uses konjac-based sashimi which allows for sashimi and nigiri that looks like its conventional fish counterparts. Today, we ordered 1. Salmon Eggplant This reminded me of nasu dengaku but with a "salmon salad" (think tuna salad) on top of charred eggplant. There was a miso sauce, the same that's used for nasu dengaku dressing the entire thing. The eggplant was creamy but not oil-laden, and the salmon worked nicely with the eggplant and miso dressing. Every bite was perfection. Each bite was garnished with fried carrot strings and beet. Sooooo good! 2. Shoku Roll We figured we should definitely order this since it's the restaurant's namesake. Since it was topped with mango & a popping boba, it had a hint of sweetness which was refreshing. 3. Dynamite Roll Absolutely gorgeous roll that packed as much flavor as it did color. The sweet, savory, creamy and crunchy.... this roll takes you on a journey and more! 4. Teriyaki Beef Roll Don't ask questions, just order this! It's like a beef donburi in roll form. 5. Salmon Nigiri I've never been a fan of seafood so this was a bit of a risky pick. Sure enough, it was too realistic for me so I had to hand it off to my bf to finish. For those who love and miss the taste of salmon, this is a must try! 6. Takoyaki While this looked like takoyaki, it definitely wasn't. They were still tasty but they were more like meatballs than anything. Takoyaki is supposed to have chunks of octopus (which when I make it at home, I use konyaku), shredded cabbage, ginger in a savory pancake-like batter cooked in a ball-shaped cast iron mold, topped with aonori, mayo and brown sauce. The meatballs were in a brown sauce of some kind and were incredibly robust and meaty. They were too meaty for my liking (some mock meats sort of gross me out!) but that's more of a preference thing and doesn't speak to the quality. It was very flavorful, it just wasn't for me. 7. Matcha Ice cream The ice cream looked like it was slice from a cake! Maybe they peeled back the paper carton of the ice cream and cut a slice from that. It looked super surgical and clean, like art! The flavor was super robust and matcha-y. It was not the typical (disappointing) green-colored ice cream that tasted mostly of vanilla and had hints of match. This was the real deal! What a rare find! It extremely pricey but it more than made up for all the times I've ordered green-colored matcha imposter ice creams, so get this if you are a matcha lover! Being how uncommon these types of restaurants are, the server was super patient in answering my questions and was helpful in making suggestions too. If I find myself in BC in the future, you can bet I'll be making another stop in here to try other items on their menu. This was such a treat!!

I think there was a bit too much rice used in the sushi. Smaller amounts of rice would have been preferred. Also, we found that the Salmon Avocado Oshi tasted just like the Tuna Avocado Oshi. Either that, or they gave us two identical sushi orders by mistake instead of 1 Salmon Avocado Oshi and 1 Tuna Avocado Oshi. I was kinda bummed that they didn't have their vegan spam that day. Hoping to go back some other day and try it. If it weren't for the vegan spam though, I probably wouldn't bother coming back to this restaurant again. Pains me to say that as I'm usually a huge supporter of plant based restaurants but...this restaurant was really just OK for me.
