As the weather gets warmer, I am craving something fresh and refreshing. After browsing the menu, I was convinced the mango salad was exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately, the menu doesn't have side dishes, so I ended up ordering the lemongrass vermicelli along with a guava juice instead. The guava juice was a bit of a surprise--not quite the freshly made tropical drink I had imagined. It turned out to be the same bottled guava juice you can easily find at the grocery store, just served in a glass and at restaurant prices. Then my lemongrass vermicelli arrived, and the server warned me to be careful because it was very hot. That definitely caught me off guard! When I think of vermicelli bowls, I picture cool noodles, crisp vegetables, fragrant herbs, and a refreshing meal perfect for a sunny day. This version was served piping hot, making it feel more comforting than refreshing. That said, the dish was still packed with flavour. The fragrant lemongrass aroma filled the bowl, the vegetables added plenty of texture, and the savoury components came together nicely. It just wasn't the light, cooling meal I had originally set my heart on when I walked in, dreaming about mango salad on a warm day. read more

Now this is how you do vegetarian and vegan meals! No wonder they made the list for Yelp's Top 25 Places to Eat in 2024!! Everything we ordered from here made us go "ummm yuuummm!" We went there on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, I had gotten a reservation beforehand and I'm glad that I did because it was crowded and there was a slight wait for walk-ins. The space is not too big but it's done up in a very tasteful manner. I would say it's a good date night spot for sure! When we arrived, we were seated promptly and the servers were pretty attentive. I got the guava juice and the ice offee.. I thought the ice coffee wasn't too sweet. For food, we were so intrigued by their appies that we decided to get just those and skip the main course. :: Uncle Hing's Wings - crispy oyster mushroom with a sweet & spicy sauce. It was pretty good, but the rice crackers seemed bland. :: Truffle dumplings - soupy, garlicky, and yummy! :: Coconut rice cakes - hands down the best dish on the menu! All of us at the table couldn't get enough of it to the point that we decided to get a second round. They were super soft and would melt in your mouth! Really good Vietnamese food. Oh and it's vegetarian. Came here on the recommendation of a vegetarian friend who said it has great food regardless of whether you are a vegetarian. I would agree with his assessment. We shared the "wings" (made with oyster mushrooms) which were honestly incredible. The breading, texture, and flavours were perfect. Definitely a must try. I also ordered the satay noodles which was also really tasty. The broth was very flavourful and loaded with veggies, tofu, and noodles. The portion sizes are generous and the food left me feeling full without feeling bloated or heavy. Service was very attentive, and I tried the pho bitters old fashioned which was interesting but not particularly memorable. Ambiance was cozy, a bit more on the casual side. I loveeeee them. I have never been to such an amazing vegan place before. This place has the best curated menu for vegan dishes with the perfect ambience for a date night. We went there on a Friday evening and we quickly got a space. We ordered couple of dishes from their menu, but the best one was Bun Bo Hue. The whole bowl was so flavorful from mushrooms to the lemongrass broth. And you can customize the spiciness too. Trust me, I have to go back here again and again to try everything on their menu. We booked one week in advance for 6 for Friday night - it's a small space so highly recommended. Wait staff is very friendly. Mmm the food. We ordered so much to share. Everything is so so good - the mixture of flavours, and textures is incredible. Every bite has both smooth and crunchy. My favourites in particular: - the coconut cakes. Wow. This was hands down, one of the best meals I've had in a very long time. For appetizers, we tried the truffle dumplings, which are served in a tangy broth. They were delicious and it was clear so much love was put into their presentation. We also tried Uncle Hing's fried mushroom "wings" and they were absolutely delicious. Perfectly crispy in a spicy, sweet sauce. A true stand out dish that I haven't seen other restaurants master. We shared the eggplant main with rice which was quite good. Eggplant can get a little soggy but they did a great job on working in fried eggplant on a tangy sauce based with loads of fresh cilantro and diced tomato on top. Their vegan ish sauce is one of the best in the game! Drinkable really! My order does not change, whether ordering for 1 or a group! I stand by these items! SPRING ROLLS (Crispy spring rolls served with greens & herbs for wrapping; ish sauce). The combo of fresh, vibrant greens, paired with their fried, crispy rolls, and then dunking in the ish sauce is just incredible! My fave dish is the COCONUT RICE CAKES (Savoury cast iron seared coconut milk rice cakes, veggie ground, vegan prawns, jicama, onion, ish sauce). The dish is so unique. Delicate and very favourable. I make a cucumber sandwich with it and smoother it in the ish sauce! Perfection! You must get UNCLE HING'S WINGS (Signature crispy oyster mushroom wings tossed in our sweet and spicy sauce). Completely different than any other oyster mushroom wing. It's like they broke the mushroom down and then battered and fried. The sauce is so good, slightly spicy, and includes fried crispy ride paper, onions, and plenty of cilantro! Lastly, the SATAY NOODLES (Spicy peanut & sesame satay broth, puff tofu, lotus root, pea tips, tomato and sweet potato noodles) is ridiculously delicious. Awesome to have a vietnamese restaurant that serves vegetarian food thar expands on the viet food menu. Lots of thing to try here that are not typically found in Vancouver. From the reviews before me, everyone raves about the eggplant dish and the wings. The wings were definitely the star of the show. Great flavor, great texture. The eggplant dish was lackluster. The choy sum veggies it came with were just blached with no salt or anything. I would skip it and try something else. The monsoon rolls were very refreshing but the crispy mix inside weren't very crispy. The peanut pineapple sauce was delicious. The banh xeo was disappointing as it was filled way too much with jicama and sprouts. The filling is double the amount as it normally is. The crepe itself got soggy too soon which means the veggies inside were too wet. Southern dry noodles were not bad. The sauce all went to the bottom so you should mix it every once in a while. The soup that it came with was very plain. We will definitely come back for the deep fried oyster mushrooms but maybe try other things next time. read more

Love their food!!! I've been to Do Chay twice and their food is always delicious. Price is a bit higher than expected but worth it. The food here is quite unique for a vegetarian place. I had the mango salad special (not on the menu) but I hope they add it as a regular item because it was absolutely delightful. Service is friendly. Our server was really nice and accommodating. He came and checked in a few times. The ambiance is quiet. It feels a bit slower but pairs well with the dining experience as you can really focus on the food. We went for Mothers Day and were really impressed with the food options. The waitresses were very attentive and the space was cozy! We started with three appies and none disappointed. The papaya salad was fresh and a bit tangy, the spring rolls were hot, delicious and crispy and the coconut rice cakes were not too coconuty and had a great texture. This is by far the best vegan Vietnamese restaurant that I have found anywhere. We had spring rolls and fry bread for appetizers. The spring rolls were so good that they disappeared before I could remember to take a photo. The fry bread was also great, the slight tartness of the jackfruit balanced out the sweetness of the fry bread. Next up was the sweet and spicy bowl and the bun bo hue. The bowl was alright, not too sweet or spicy with a nice crispness to the veggies. The star was the bun bo hue. This was a lot of food, the bowl is a big one. 4/5 - Plantain sticky rice tapioca - The Plantain to sticky rice ratio was really high with a very small amount of plantain. The plantain is like the sushi filling to a roll of sticky rice that's then deep fried and put onto a bed of tapioca pearls. The crisp on the sticky rice was a bit hard, and heavy. Tapioca was a bit on the sweeter end but nice and light. 2/5 - It is a taste preference though, because partner loved the dish since they liked crispy things. Perfect balance of textures of creamy and crunchy, smooth banana, not too pungent or strong. Liked the fried sticky rice and presentation that looked like a sea star. Do Chay is, alongside another Vancouver restaurant, one of my two favorites. Reservations are highly recommended, as this eatery sees a high volume of customers despite its modest size. During rush hours, the parking situation might be chaotic. The service we received from them was superb. The bartender and servers recommended some of the better meals on the menu. The indescribable deliciousness of their truffle dumplings. Dry noodles in the way of the South served with pho broth on the side are a knockout and a crowning achievement. I've seen Do Chay in the making since it's inception. Everything on the menu is vegetarian. They're sister restaurant to Green Lemongrass (further west on Kingsway), Broken Rice (Richmond) and a second Do Chay (Yaletown). Their next door to Pallet Coffee Roasters. We've been twice, both on weekday evenings and it's always busy. Modern and hip inside with exposed brick and hipster light bulbs. Service is decent but you'll have to flag them down for refills. The menu is split into street food, share plates, rice plate and noodle bowls. Their happy hour (3:00pm to 6:00pm, 8:30pm to close) only has a couple of drink options. Sad that there's no happy hour food offerings. Trip #1 - Banh khot ($12.00) - you don't see these too often. These had a compelling bite but the flavours were very one dimensional. - Pho dac biet chay ($16.00) - the avocado went surprisingly well with the vegan pho. Adds some creaminess to the dish. Broth was light and clean. - Banh tam bi chay ($13.00) - found the desert island noodles to be a small portion but the coconut milk sauce was interesting. The dish just won't blow you away. Trip #2 - Persephone coast life lager ($6.00) and Sobieski turmeric soda ($6.00) - Daikon cakes ($11.00) - these are essentially lo bak go with an egg underneath. Worth $11? Not particularly. - Satay noodles ($16.00) - the noodles were slightly clumpy but the flavours were good. Seitan (aka. wheat gluten) had a good texture. - Bun bo hue ($16.00) - broth isn't spicy and lacks in complexity compared to other BBH's in town. However, the soy protein was very umami and the mushrooms had a great bite. - Vegan pho ($16.00) - they ran out of avocado but doubled up on the vegetables. Broth was light. - Coconut jelly - they brought out a a complimentary dessert to end our meal. Nice unexpected touch Hope they do something with the rooftop patio. Ambiance: 4/5 Service: 4.5/5 Food: 4.5/5 Veg Vietnamese is hard to come by so when I heard that there was a restaurant dedicated to strictly veg/vegan Vietnamese, I knew I had to check it out! I've been twice now and can't wait to keep going back! First off, I love that you can make reservations online, no wait time is key when you're super hungry. The restaurant isn't huge in size but has around 6-7 tables for 4 and I like the decor inside. The service has also been really friendly both times and the food comes out super fast! Now for the food, I've tried a decent amount of dishes here with my favourite being the Satay Noodles (swap the rice noodles for udon noodles) and the Daikon Cakes - both are SO good! The Spring Rolls are also delicious but the portion size is a teeensy bit too small for the price in my opinion. I've also tried the Coconut Rice Cakes which a lot of people seem to enjoy but they weren't for me, and the Desert Island Noodles - I liked the broth and flavour but the veg meatballs I found to be a bit bland and dry so I wouldn't get it again. For dessert they also give complimentary coconut jelly which is nice! My new favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver. We have had take out once and dined in person this afternoon. I would reorder every dish not missing meat for a second. I am not a vegan or strict vegetarian but aim for mostly plant-based. Of course in person dining the presentation is lot nicer and fried items were crispier but really most of it made the trip through DoorDash just fine after we reheated a bit in the oven. Dishes we have shared include the Uncle Hing's Wings, Coco Rice Cakes, Papaya Salad ( so good had this twice ) Jackfruit Lettuce Wrap ( today's favorite) Sweet and Spicy Bowl ( definitely getting this again) and Vegan Pho. I've had this place bookmarked for awhile and finally got to try a couple of their dishes. Everything was very tasty and satisfying! Satay noodles: I loved the spicy peanut broth. It was so creamy and delicious! There were a decent amount of toppings, including roasted broccoli and cauliflower. There were also 3 pieces of seitan, which are these super tasty fried bits of gluten. I probably felt like the portion for this was a little small as they were so good that I wanted more! The noodles were a yellow colour, which I didn't expect, and came all stuck together at the bottom of the bowl. However, once I added in the soup, they separated nicely and had a nice chewy texture! Monsoon wraps: the portion came with 3 rolls. The pineapple sauce was very fresh and I could really taste the pineapple. It went well with the wrap, which had a nice crunch and lots of fresh herb filling. I didn't really notice the tofu, but they were still very tasty. Surprisingly, even after sharing the noodles and having 1 salad roll each, my boyfriend and I felt full. So these are definitely a good value, and non-vegetarian eaters should not be worried! I really liked the banh xeo crepe. It was huge and came with tons of greens. They have two noodles & soup items on their menu: vegan pho and bun bo hue. The vegan pho was pretty much vegetable noodle soup and lacked flavour. I'll stick to meat-based pho broths. I enjoyed the bun bo hue, it was a lot more flavourful. However, I came back a 2nd time and the bun bo hue broth seemed watered down. My least favourite dish was the salted egg yolk eggplant. Met up with a friend for a week night dinner. Do Chay looked intriguing but I was a bit skeptical since it was vegetarian. That skepticism evaporated once the first food hit the table. The papaya salad was the best I've ever had and the spring rolls were tasty and fresh. Our mains were not as good as the appetizer, but delicious nonetheless. I highly recommend giving this place a shot for vegetarians or otherwise. Most dishes were also vegan so there's options for everyone. I definitely would have stuck to just sampling the appetizers next time though. read more

Walked in and there was a 1 hour wait but we noticed a patio in the back that was empty and got seated outside immediately. Great service and even better food. I loved everything here and can't wait to come back. I was so full after eating all this for 2 people. The coconut cakes don't hit as hard as real banh kot for some reason but it was my boyfriends favourite. Highly recommend coming here read more
