Went to DD Mau during Dine Out to try their $40 three-course menu. The space is pretty cool (though it's located in a somewhat questionable neighborhood). Service was friendly and welcoming. Overall, it's a solid hangout spot for Vietnamese fusion. Golden Basa Roll ($13) A rice-paper roll with fish and vermicelli. Unfortunately kind of forgettable -- the flavour was pretty mild and not something I'd order again. Fried Sticky Rice ($14) My favourite dish of the night. The fried sticky rice had a great texture -- crispy on the outside and chewy inside. Served with lap cheong, shimeji mushrooms, and a fried egg. The sweet soy sauce tied everything together nicely. Damn Good Chicken & Rice ($21) My second time trying Vietnamese turmeric chicken and rice. It reminded me how many Southeast Asian countries have similar chicken-and-rice dishes with their own tweaks. Hard to go wrong with this -- a solid option. Grilled Meatballs & Lemongrass Vermicelli ($25) A classic bún chả. I always enjoy the freshness of herbs and how light Vietnamese dishes can feel. That said, the protein-to-noodle ratio felt a bit off, and the broth leaned a little too sweet for me. Banana Cake ($10) A unique dessert, though not really my thing. This place is always delicious! Came here for a work lunch and the food did not disappoint. Started with a 'Not a beer' drink which is jasmine tea + foam - very refreshing and light! My favourite appetizers were the crab pockets and deep fried crispy rice cubes with Chinese sausage. Both dishes had so much flavour and excellent crunch! For my main, I got a winter special, Banh Canh Cua. The broth was very tasty, noodle texture was great, and I enjoyed the variety of meats and seafood. The Smashing Rice Paper was a refreshing, textural start, but the Fried Sticky Rice was the absolute MVP--crispy, savory, and so comforting. For mains, the Hà Nội Style Grilled Meatballs and Lemongrass Chicken Vermicelli were bright and packed with flavor. We tried out their Dine Out Vancouver dinner and really enjoyed how playful and creative the menu was from start to finish. We began with the fried sticky rice, which was surprisingly interesting. The sticky rice is pan-fried, cut into small cubes, and tossed with shimeji mushrooms, sweet soy sauce, sliced lap cheong sausage, and topped with a runny egg. It's tasty and comforting but FYI... the rice really sticks to your teeth. The smashing rice paper was a standout starter. It starts with a deep-fried rice paper (almost like a shrimp cracker), followed by a steamed rice sheet topped with flavorful minced pork, shrimp, and scallions. Dipped into the fermented pineapple anchovy sauce, it was inventive, bold, and delicious. For mains, the vermicelli bowl with grilled lemongrass chicken came with fried pork spring rolls and delivered exactly what you'd expect in a good way. The Hà Nội-style grilled meatballs and pork with vermicelli felt like a deconstructed pho, where you dip the noodles and vegetables into a sweet and spicy soup. A very solid and comforting choice. We finished with the banana cake, which leaned more glutinous in texture. Paired with tapioca and coconut milk poured over top, it was rich, satisfying, and a great way to end the meal. I really loved the inside of the restaurant--the ambiance and service were great. While the food isn't the most authentic, it's still decent. My favorite dishes were the fried sticky rice and the damn good chicken and rice; both had good flavor. I took a bite of the chicken & rice with shallots and onions, followed by a spoonful of soup--it was a perfect combination. The chicken pho was also very comforting and hearty. Although the food was good, but there are a few things that can be worked on. I felt like the chicken wings weren't the freshest, though the flavor was still good. The beef carpaccio slices were a bit too thick, making the beef chewy. The hu tieu didn't have much flavor; it felt like I was just eating rice noodles with some toppings. I had been meaning to come here for years, and I finally made it on a Wednesday night (for my friend who was doing a live DJ set!). What a cool spot in the heart of Chinatown. I think the thing that stands out to me the most was the service. Our server was absolutely hilarious and even showed us a well-timed meme at one point. We were laughing so hard I'm pretty sure we all had tears in our eyes. The food was excellent as well. They were great but I felt they were a bit sweeter than I like but still amazingly crispy and sticky. The chicken pho had a really nice broth full of flavour and the noodles were just al dente. The only thing is I found the chicken to be dry. We also ordered the crab and pork pockets. I didn't taste any crab but they tasted like real Vietnamese spring rolls but square shaped. We always come because the food has always been amazing at DD MAU. Fresh tasting like home and unique at the same time. The last meal we had the service went above and beyond. Our son almost knocked over a tray one of the servers was carrying to the kitchen. And the staff, Julianna, handled it so well. She was so kind and thoughtful. My son was so worried he was in trouble, thought he broke a glass and was embarrassed the whole restaurant was staring. But Julianna got down to his level made sure he was safe and reminded him he didn't do anything wrong. Hip and tasty Vietnamese eatery in Chinatown The damn good chicken and rice is in fact damn good. Make sure to drizzle the broth liberally on your rice. The Hanoi style meatballs and vermicelli (bun cha Hà Nội) is also delicious, with the perfect combination of umami and fragrance from the fresh herbs. Another highlight is the fried sticky rice, which is shockingly tasty with big flavours and textures. That being said, everything I've eaten here has been really good. This is a hidden Vietnamese restaurant located next to Fortune Sound Club, which can be easily overlooked when walking by. Funny enough I didn't notice this place and walked right pass before my partner called me back. The restaurant is dim but has great vibes. There is an open bar section and silver/metal tables with pops of colours, textile accents, and wall pictures bringing a Vietnamese touch. We ordered their famous chicken wings and beef carpaccio to share, which we didn't regret. The chicken wings were crunchy on the outside and juicy inside. The fish sauce smelled quite potent at first, but the taste wasn't overbearing though the wings were a touch salty. The beef carpaccio was so tender and flavourful though a couple of our friends still preferred the one from Phnom Penh. I tried their lychee jasmine green tea, which wasn't too sweet or syrupy. It tasted a bit diluted but the tea flavour really came through. I wished they added some real lychee to give the drink a fresher note. For our mains, we ordered their Damn Good Chicken & Rice and a Sate Beef Banh Mi. The Sate Beef Banh Mi was nothing special. The bun was crispy and the vegetables were fresh and crunchy. The beef was a touch salty. Overall, it was good but not mind blowing. The chicken rice dish reminded us of Hainanese Chicken Rice. It had a strong onion taste and the rice was quite wet. Flavour was good, but nothing stood out. The soup that came with the rice on the other hand was addictive. It was a simple chicken broth with green onions, but it was a salty goodness that my partner and I fought over. Service started off great but was less attentive as the night went on though the restaurant did get busier later in the night. There were times we couldn't find our server or had to ask for takeout boxes twice. BUT it was such a nice gesture and we really appreciated it when they gave us complimentary shots since we were celebrating a birthday. Overall, we really enjoyed the appetizers and the ambience of the restaurant. So much character in this smaller establishment! We were looking for a Vietnamese restaurant within walking distance since my little guy loves pho. This restaurant came up when I searched with good reviews so we walked over. Server was friendly and attentive. They were able to offer a kids sized pho (not on the menu) which was excellent since the normal bowl of pho on the menu would've been too large for him. Hubs and I sampled four of the seasonal menu items and for the most part they were great. Eggplant was so well balanced and delicious! Duck rice rolls were decent. Hubs loved the braised pork belly as the flavours were delicate and clean. Coconut panna cotta for desert was just okay - I thought the coconut flavour was lacking but texturally it was lovely. In a city with a vibrant and competitive Vietnamese cuisine scene, it is surprising that this restaurant continues to operate. Both the regular pho and bun Bo hue lacks depth in flavour, straight salty and spicy, nothing else. The portion is also small. (So small that after dinner I had to get a burger next door). The "damn good chicken and rice" is a joke, nothing good about it. Should rename it to damn bland chicken and rice. Best chicken wings EVAAAAAAA!!!! I'm not a huge fan of chicken but my boyfriend's friend took us here and claimed that they're known for their dishes and I was blown away. If you're into the crispy skin less meat type of chicken wings, this is for you. They also have a very strong, fragrant fish sauce taste/smell if that's something you're into. The fish sauce component was definitely the ingredient that sent me over the top with these wings. Their other dishes are really delicious as well. They feature a hip/trendy ambience with viet cuisine. I had their spicy beef noodle soup which was very strong and spicy to me but really hit the spot on a cold winter day. The broth for the chicken rice also paired amazingly with the rice and serves as a comfort food. The restaurant is located in a basement in Chinatown, and you'll need to keep your eyes out to find the sign (very discreet). I saw that they have vegan options, so I decided to order take-out one evening for dinner. They offer 15% off if you order online (their online order wasn't working for me, so they honoured the discount for my phone order -- very nice of them). The food was ready 15 mins later. They're located in a skethcy area, and so when you arrive, they have you ring a doorbell, and they bring out your food to you. I ordered the vegan avocado salad rolls ($8 plus tax, before discount) and the vegan pho ($13 plus tax before discount). The salad rolls were very fresh, with a good amount of avocado, nice crunchy veggies, fresh romaine lettuce (rather than the usual crappy iceberg you get at some places), and a rich, creamy peanut sauce. Very nice. 4.5/5 The vegan pho was similarly satisfying. Generous portion of fresh rice noodles with good consistency, tofu, and mixed veggies (broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and shiitake mushroom). The broth has a nice mushroomy depth to it -- not too salty, yet somehow has enough depth to make it interesting. They didn't serve any hot sauce / hoisin with it -- I guess you have to ask for that. But you get the usual pho garnishes (basil, bean sprouts, lime and jalapeno). Good pho. 4/5 Overall, reasonably priced, good portions, very fresh, and tasty food. Coming back from Nanaimo, we wanted something a bit lighter and pho seemed like the perfect choice! We ordered quite a few of their items for take out starting with of course, the beef pho which had plenty of noodles, a sweet and clear broth and a good assortment of beef. In addition, I had always wanted to try their banh mi and honestly, it wasnt anything special as the bread was a bit soft but they included a lot of lemongrass chicken in the filling. The crab fried rice was simple and not too oily while the crab pockets were a delightful surprise being stuffed to the brim and crisp even as take out. The chicken wings were also stellar being well fried, not overly sauced and delicious! Finally, the star of the night was without a doubt, the chicken rice which was similar to Hainanese chicken but had shredded chicken and onions on top of some of the most flavourful rice i've tried! The broth of the pho tasted very clean and not heavy with msg. They have pork and vegetable spring rolls option, an order comes with two spring rolls. The spring rolls are very good, crispy, fresh, and not too oily. The fried sticky rice is like a crispy rice variation, really enjoyed this take on sticky rice. The chicken wings were fried well, but I wasn't a fan of the fish sauce glaze. This is a personal opinion, but someone else in my party enjoyed it. Was craving Pho so my friend and I decided to stop by DD Mau. It was extremely clean inside and the ambience was so chill and homey. We both decided to get the beef pho and I got an iced coffee along with it. The beef pho was so delicious, there was a good variety of meat and the pho noodles were so fresh and had a delicious chewy texture with a bite. The broth was absolutely amazing and so clear. Had a craving for Vietnamese food one night and decided to order from DD Mau via Uber Eats. It took me so long to choose what I wanted because let's face it, this girl wants it all (lol). In the end, I ordered the Trifecta rice plate (pork, chicken, egg... bingo!) and got myself a nice, cold Vietnamese iced coffee too. The order came quickly and was packed well. I was very happy to open my box and saw that my egg yolk was in tact (it matters to me ) and looking gorgeous. The Trifecta was great and satisfied all of my cravings. I must add too that the pickled veg that came with it was also delicious! To top it off, I thoroughly enjoyed my coffee. It was cold and strong, just the way I like it. If you're looking for that caffeine kick, their iced coffee is sure to deliver! Currently giving them a 4 star ranking as I would love to revisit to check the vibe in-store once dine in is open again. I've heard great things and can't wait to experience it for myself. read more

I haven't had the pleasure of dining in yet but I just wanted to send a shout out to awesome take out service from DDMau. All of the dishes that I got were packaged nicely and they offer some really good fresh and healthy vegetarian meals. I got the Avocado salad rolls which were super fresh and came with an amazing peanut dipping sauce. I could seriously eat a whole jar of that stuff in one sitting. My favorite are the chicken wings, I unfortunately forgot to snap a photo but they are so delicious. Crispy, tangy and juicy. I thought 11$ was a fantastic price for the portion. I also like to order their Bahn mi. I hope to someday dine in but until then I'll definitely be ordering take out! read more

Best Vietnamese I've had outside of Vietnam. Though I do with they had my fave, bahn xeo. But beggars can't be choosers. The egg coffee was delicious, and basically dessert in a cup. Sweeter than I remember it being in Hanoi, but super yummy. I got the "Obama Noodles" and the flavor was amazing!! I did have to add more fish sauce, but I recognize that a flavor most westerners aren't used to, and therefore probably best from a business perspective to not be too heavy handed with it for most.
