Rating is based on dine in dinner for 4: Ambiance - 4/5 - nice atmosphere whether it's a date or with friends/family Location - 3/5 - right off Kingsway and Knight on the southwest side. Parking - a challenge especially if it's during rush hour Food - a vegan or vegetarian eatery. If you're a meat eater, you're out of luck. Simple menu with appies, rice, noodle dishes. 5/5 - Banh Xeo Crepe - a crispy deep fried crepe. Slightly pricey but enough to feed 2 people. Everyone's favourite dish. 5/5 - Spring Rolls - crispy & flavourful 5/5 - Monsoon roll - flavourful filling with soft wrapping 3.5/5 - Vegan shrimp curry bowl with rice - a mild yellow curry flavour. Had a great lunch with an old friend from HS. We had to do some catching up as life is passing by. Going through so much similar experience connects people despite so much time has elapsed. We found we can still understand each other. Had the spring rolls, crepe and tofu with rice. All were vegan. I am not generally big on vegan as I need proteins for my exercise regiment, found the meal astonishingly filling. Update: this place is still awesome. We've come here many times over the past couple years, and the food is always high-quality. Sometimes the service is a bit haphazard -- forgetting certain items, or with significant delays (both for dine-in and take-out) -- but you always can forgive it for the food quality. My only real complaint is it tends to be on the oily side -- even compared to other Vietnamese and Asian restaurants. They seem to update their menu regularly, adding / removing certain dishes, and modifying others. This latest time, we ordered way too much food, but it was all excellent: -Bahn Xeo Crepe ($18) -- I'd seen people order this a few times and finally decided to try it. Now it comes with plant-based "prawns", which are an interesting texture, and totally un-fishy (thankfully). Other than that, it's mostly bean sprouts inside. The crepe is somewhat crunchy and quite oily, but very tasty. 4.5/5 -Black Garlic Eggplant ($15) -- Perfectly cooked eggplant, with a sweet, garlicy sauce that works well over the rice. You get a bit of steamed bok choy on the side. Very good. 4.5/5 -XO Green Beans ($13) -- I'm a sucker for Asian green beans and these hit the spot. Oily, savoury, and lightly sweet, with a great garnish of garlic and fried onion, served atop crispy vermicelli. Really tasty. 5/5 -Lettuce Wrap ($14) -- this is advertised as coming with tempeh, but it only came with a few small pieces, and instead came with a lot of fried tofu, and diced veggies cooked into a swimming pool of oil. It's tasty, sure, but this one seemed too different than advertised and is just too over-the-top oily. 3.5/5 -Mushroom Vermicelli ($15) -- the best part of this dish are the little spring rolls and the garnish on top of the vermicelli. If you don't mix this in with the noodles enough, you'll be left with very plain, flavourless noodles underneath. Very tasty dish though. 4.5/5 -Papaya Salad ($13) -- done very well, seasoned perfectly, and comes with some nice bean curd skin sheet strips on top. My introduced me to this place and I loved it! They don't take reservations, so when we arrived, the hostess told us there would be a 15-30 minute wait, and I wasn't keeping track of time, but it was definitely within that window. They just take your number and text you when a table is ready. The hostess was friendly and throughout the meal I felt that our waitress was just attentive enough, and was helpful with menu questions. The decoration of the building is really nice without being over the top and felt warm and cozy on the cold rainy day it was outside. I like that they still have dividers up where the tables are close together. My friend and I ordered the Coconut Rice Cakes and Spring Rolls to share. As a coconut fan, the rice cakes were like heaven. The middle has a creamy coconut filling, and I liked the mild sweetness of the cakes. Spring rolls had a nice crunch and flavourful filling, and were good wrapped in greens and drizzled with sauce. Lots of pickled carrots and radish(?) in the sauce which was really good, I felt like the sauce actually added something to the rolls and cakes, as well as my noodles, rather than just being an add-on that ends up covering the main flavours of the dish. For my entree, I had the Desert Island noodles. These were not quite what I was expecting but I was very happy with them! When I think of vegan meatballs I usually expect something along the lines of Beyond Meat, but this wasn't like that at all, with a more natural, slightly nutty, flavour and texture. They used a generous drizzle of coconut milk to impart a coconut flavour to the dish, and the tofu and peanut toppings added a nice crunch. There was also plenty of greens so it felt like a balanced meal. The portion sizes are large. I took one of the rice cakes and about a third of my noodles home. They finish the meal with a small complimentary coconut jelly, which I wouldn't have ordered by itself (even if it was larger) since the flavour was too weak for my taste, but it wasn't bad, and as a complimentary add-on it was a nice way to close things out. read more

If you've never heard, these "wings" are one of the many signature dishes from Do Chay! Do Chay Saigon is a Vietnamese restaurant highlighting the best of vegetarian dishes, with a few modern twists. Both of their locations have stunning decor. The overall theme is very rustic and simple, with subtle nods towards their Vietnamese heritage. Now, jumping into the food. While I have heard nothing but good reviews from Do Chay, I had my own hesitations about vegetarian Vietnamese food, especially their pho. Their pho broth tastes like it mainly uses mushrooms as a base. I actually thought it tasted quite interesting and enjoyed it. Their noodles, however, got quite soggy quite quickly, which isn't something I usually see when I order pho. Also, with the amount of avocado included, the creaminess of the avocado actually conflicted with the overall texture profile of the soup noodles, taking away from the usual clarity of a typical pho broth. On the other hand, I absolutely loved the wings and the mushroom vermicelli. Uncle Hing's Wings are made with oyster mushrooms, deep-fried to crispy perfection and tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce. Even though they were deep-fried, I found them surprisingly light. It would be an amazing snack to have with an ice cold beer or cocktail. Their mushroom vermicelli also has oyster mushrooms in it, in addition to some wood ear fungus. Tossed in some lemongrass chili oil over a bed of vermicelli, and served with a spring roll and a side of fresh herbs and pickled carrots. The food here is amazing. Why massacre living things for nourishment when vegetables can taste this good? I have to admit, I am usually quick to write-off vegan places. I am not interested in processed vegetables being made to look and taste like meat because I can have the real thing. That's not what they are trying to do here. Vietnamese food has so much great flavour that you won't miss meat. In some places in the world, people have been vegetarian for centuries and their experience preparing tasty vegetarian meals stands out compared to any meat substitute available on the market (although they are getting better all the time). The coconut rice cakes were sensational. The fragrance and the creamy coconut milk in the centre of the rice cake gave it a rich eggy texture. I can't finish this review without mentioning the "ish sauce". I always load up on Fish Sauce at Vietnamese restaurants, but this place being vegan has come up with a sauce that is similarly tasty. read more

I'm sorry to say that this is the worst vegan meal I have ever eaten. We ordered many items and nothing tasted good. The vegan pho broth was completely bland, the noodles were so mushy they broke apart immediately. The broth was not hot enough to cook the sprouts. The monsoon roll tasted like herbs, but that was it. The daikon cakes weren't bad but really nothing special. I've definitely had much better papaya salad elsewhere. Another restaurant usually beacons me away or some kind of fast food temps me to cheat and we cancel USUALLY. I AM SO GLAD WE WAITED IT OUT. :D We ordered a wide array of vegan options. The best easily were the spring rolls and the squash blossoms. Close second comes to potstickers and pho. Next time we are going to both try the rice bowls; order doubles of squash blossoms and spring rolls. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. The staff is charming and prompt. I'm really impressed with this place . The are definitely on point . I've been back so many times, for take out and dine in. I've almost tried every dish here and they all have been super delish! I dont even know where to start. Uncle hings wings are so good. Oyster mushrooms are sooo good . Nice and a great kick. The bun bo hue is the only one that I feel should maybe not have so much Lemongrass in there. It's cut up into little bits and you will get a mouthful which isn't the easiest to eat, so maybe if they smashed it in the broth . The spicy sesame bowl isn't spicy at all . Great place for some vegetarian Vietnamese food. It was a long bus ride for us but worth the trip. We got the satay noodles, vermicelli with mushrooms and the rice cakes. While the satay noodles were very flavorful, the rice cakes won hands down. We loved the texture and the flavor, very unique. The Do chay tea was a refreshing cocktail but it's did not blow my mind. Who knew that this vegan/vegetarian spot would open up on Kingsway where there's a number of Vietnamese food. There was a wait when we arrived at 1pm and they do have a wait area but based on the layout, it's just situated at the back near the bathrooms. The menu designs were definitely something that I don't see often at Viet restaurants. We got a number of different dishes but I think it's safe to say that the tapioca dumplings were our fav. They were cooked perfectly that it was soft and chewy. I got the bun bo hue since it's the dish I use as my base line to judge a Viet spot and while presentation of it looked a little more modern like Banh Mi Tres Bon style, there was something lacking in the flavours. All the things I look for in a bun bo hue like the pig feet and pig's blood weren't present (Obviously since it's vegetarian)... This spot reminded me a lot of Anh and Chi and I'd probably pick it over Anh and Chi but I'm more of a hole-in-the-wall kind of person when it comes to Viet food so food flavours matter more to me than restaurant vibes. I would come here again if I'm introducing someone to Viet cuisines but would definitely not bring my Vietnamese family here since we already have a preconception of what we expect to taste when we eat Viet food. read more

Spring Rolls are super crispy and delicious. Wrap the spring roll with mustard green and herbs. Every bite with a crunch with fresh vegetables and mint. Saigon noodle had good flavour and packed with heat. My favourite is the Satay Noodles drenched in peanut and sesame sauce. The coconut rice cakes are going to be one of my fav appy dishes! Nice toasted exterior while the inside is similar to a rice pudding, nice soft texture. I'm also a fan of their "ish" sauce which is a more subtle and lighter flavor compared to the traditional fish sauce. it paired well with the coconut rice cake while still giving a similar taste to the original fish sauce. Completely exceeded my hopes and expectations! It's my first time here and my favourites are the XO potstickers and satay noodles. The potstickers are the tastiest potstickers I've ever had, meat and veggie potstickers included. The potsticker skins, filling, and sauce together made me a bit upset that there are only 5 pieces in one order! The satay noodles are so loaded with flavours that you can't pin point each individual one, but you taste the rainbow with each mouthful. Love that it's loaded with veggies. We stopped here for dinner on our way through Vancouver. We had one of the best meals EVER! We sat at the bar so we got to eat watch the two chefs cook. We started with the truffle dumplings. I had the spicy peanut satay noodles. My husband had the southern style dry noodles (that soft boiled marinated egg!) and my son had the vegan pho. We loved all of the dishes so much. This is an updated review from my 1st visit (there were lots of communication problem with walk-in seating and was given the wrong quote time) but through my friends strong recommendation, I decided to give it another shot. From the three visits, I would say the pot stickers are delicious. The sauce is delicious and the filling is sweet and tangy. I really enjoyed the presentation. The dessert noodles had a very coconut-ty sweet taste and the portion size is shareable. My friend ordered the Mushroom Vermicelli and it tastes better with the Fish Sauce on the noodles. I tried this cute little place since my friend is vegan (I am not) and it was really good! We ordered: Uncle Hings wings - fried mushrooms, must order! The seasoning was SO flavourful! Grilled eggplant - came with rice and veggies, also I would def order again! Coco rice cakes - these were good, but I didn't love the coconut hint. They are a restaurant favourite though. Jackfruit lettuce wraps - also very good! This was one of my friends faves. I LOOOOOVE DO CHAY!!! I had an amazing time here!! Do Chay is another great green restaurant in Vancouver! A few steps away from the Vegetarian Po Kong Restaurant(s). They were so busy when we visited that we had to share a table with 5 other people. I mean I didn't mind sharing a table with other people especially if I'm waiting for my vegetarian dishes. We got the chance to meet new people so I guess it was a plus! I got to try the coconut rice, bird's nest and eggplant. Honestly, every single dish I had was so delicious that I wanted them all for myself. The eggplants had so much flavour in them, I wanted another one. It wasn't something you'd get at an average Asian restaurant. It was cooked really well and paired so well with white rice. The bird's nest was to die for and those coconut rice cakes were something new for me. I'd definitely come back again and re-try and relive those said dishes as well as try new ones!! read more

Stellar Vegan/Vegetarian Vietnamese Food Do Chay gets 5 stars for having the golden standard combination of excellent food, service, and price. This location isn't particularly huge, but it's spacious enough and well organized and laid out. Each table section also has clear partitions for what I assume are for covid safety reasons (if that sort of thing is still important to you). The menu has a nice selection of street food, shared plates, and rice plates, but you can pretty much share most of the dishes. When I came here we got the spring rolls, green beans, papaya salad, lettuce wraps, vegan prawn curry, and pho. There were three of us and that was plenty of food for all of us. Everything was delicious, and in particular the spring rolls, papaya salad, and lettuce wraps were super tasty and stood out. A lot of times, trendy vegan restaurants tend to be on the slightly pricier side, but what really makes Do Chay shine in my book is that all of their dishes are super affordable. Their dishes range between $9 to $18 Canadian dollars, with $18 being their most expensive. Finally ate at Do Chay after leaving due to us having to wait 45 minutes last time, and this place definitely did not disappoint! I only came with my parents, since my brother was tired and he hates vegetables anyway. I ended up ordering 10 dishes and the waitress was looking at me like "bish are you *really* sure". Well, don't underestimate the appetite of a 5'0" girl, because we ended up finishing everything except the jackfruit dish, and that was only because we all hated it (sorry Do Chay we still love you). We ended up packing leftovers - which consisted of half a head of lettuce. Yes, the people beside us looked at us like we were cuckoo but my mom wanted the lettuce so here we are. Green Beans (3.5/5) A very solid dish. It's nothing spectacular, but the sautéed onions and shallots really elevated this dish. The green beans were cooked nicely as well, since they weren't too undercooked, but not limp and soggy either. Overall, it was a light and refreshing way to start the meal. Eat your veggies kids! (And adults.) XO Potstickers (4/5) What I liked: The crispy bits on top and the XO sauce, as well as the mushroom filling. What I didn't like: The fact that the dumpling skin too thick and that it wasn't pan fried so it didn't have the crispy exterior that I like in potstickers. Spring Rolls (5/5) Delicious! Spring rolls are always a win and are pretty hard to screw up. These ones weren't too oily and the filling was flavourful and tasty. Salted Egg Yolk Eggplant (2.5/5) Wasn't a fan of the salted egg yolk flavour which didn't go well with the eggplant. The batter was too thick and over-fried, so it was hard, not crispy. This issue was especially prominent in the mushrooms, which were like mini rocks. Coconut Rice Cakes (2/5) These might be good if you like coconut, but I wasn't a huge fan of them personally. The texture was pretty good, except there was some filling on the inside which had the texture of celery? This would be rated much higher if I was a coconut fan. Pan Fried Daikon Cakes (4.5/5) This was delicious as well. The daikon cakes were fried nicely, and matched well with the egg underneath and the sauce on top. We all devoured it in seconds. Okay, minutes, but who's counting? Black Truffle Tofu (4/5) This was quite tasty, though my parents enjoyed it a little more than I did, probably because I wasn't a fan of the ginger taste from the slivers of ginger on top. The truffle and the tofu was good though. Jackfruit Lettuce Wraps (0.5/5) The 0.5 is for the lettuce, which helped tone down the sauce in the Sweet and Spicy bowl. Nothing against this dish, but I have now confirmed the fact that I hate jackfruit, and so do my parents. Banh Xeo Crepe (4.5/5) This was the most surprising thing that I liked. It was super tasty! The crunch from the crepe and the bean sprouts with the mushrooms and green onions on the inside was a unique tasted that I couldn't get enough of. I wish they used a little more mushrooms and a little less bean sprouts, but minor complaints. Sweet and Spicy Bowl (3/5) The sauce saved this dish. The batter on everything in this dish was way too thick, which completely ruined the flavour of the vegetables. The mushrooms were pretty good though. The sauce wasn't spicy at all, and it's very overpowering, making this quite a heavy dish. I wouldn't get it again. So there were a few misses, but I'm still giving this place 5 stars because there are enough good items on the menu that I will be coming back for. Prices are decent for the portions, and service is great as well (at least when we came here at 4pm). I wish they didn't serve the side vegetables of mint and whatever, because no one ended up eating that so it was rather wasteful. I absolutely love trying vegan asian fusion restaurants. Do Chay was on the top of my list during my trip to Vancouver. TIP: Come for dinner & they'll serve a small complimentary dessert. We tried some of their street food/shared dishes. I was a huge fan of their SALTED EGG YOLK EGGPLANT and COCONUT CAKES. The BANH XEO CREPE & JACKFRUIT LETTUCE WRAPS are quite refreshing and come with tons of greens which I appreciate. I normally find vegetarian food to lack in texture but this meal left us wanting for nothing. Literally everything we had here had good flavour and texture without repeating the same coating on everything. We had dumplings, the eggplant, spring rolls and the mushroom "chicken" wings. I'd do all again. Prices are a bit high but if you look at the food, you can see the amount of labour that has to go into it,.. you won't easily be whipping up copy dishes at home... We did not eat in but they looked as if they had pretty solid COVID measures in place including large plexi-barriers and spacing, none of which took away from the pleasing wood-based interior. Delicious vegetarian food at do chay. Ambience is nice. Decor is nice and cozy, lots of earth woody green tones. Overall food was good. Ordered the vegan rolls, coconut cakes, Jack fruit lettuce wrap and birds nest. Vegan rolls were the high light for me personally. Tasted so much like the ones at anh and Chi and pretty spot on (wasn't able to tell the difference between a vegetarian and meat version) but becareful eating these. They're made fresh to order. Burnt my mouth pretty badly eating these. Coconut cakes were a bit to oily or creamy for my liking. One piece was good for me. Hubby enjoyed eating these. If your not a fan of coconut in general I would skip these. Jack fruit lettuce reminded me faintly of eating Peking lettuce wraps. Good spices and flavours. Warning tho, very very messy to eat. The birds and nest was ok. I enjoyed the egg tofu but felt it looked pretty but not something I would get again. Server was quite good about filling our waters and attending to our needs. Compared to veggie Chau I think this place is a good competitor but I still personally think veggie Chau takes the cake for me. Man oh man. I was soooooooo excited for this place and I was also quite disappointed. Service is great, environment is good, food is very mediocre. I got the lettuce wrap, satay noodles, and bun bo hue. Lettuce wrap was salty, satay noodles were big disappointment as the noodles were too fat and breaking apart, bun bo hue could filter out the lemongrass. Heard a lot of good things about Do Chay, and finally had the chance to drop by with a group of 8 for a birthday dinner. We called in advance and were able to secure a reservation on a Sunday evening, which was awesome. It looked like the most they could seat was 8 at the table, but I didn't get a chance to wander around back so I'm not sure if they can accommodate larger groups. The round table for our party was located right by the door, which let in a lot of cold air during our stay, so if you're coming with a larger group in cooler temperatures, be aware of this and have a warm sweater or jacket with you. Smaller tables and booths on the other end of the room right by the door are also impact by the chill whenever the door opens. What's great about Do Chay is that they have onion and garlic free indicators on their menu. What's not so great is there aren't any rice bowl options available, but there's still appetizers, share plates, and noodle bowls. Our group ended up ordering the following: four orders of Pan Fried Daikon Cakes, two orders of Banh Xeo Crepe, two orders of Satay Noodles, two orders of Do Chay Vermicelli, a glass of Black Lemonade, and the Sweet and Spicy Bowl for the one friend who could consume onion & garlic. The Daikon Cakes were delicious! They aren't vegan and come with an egg, and the dip that came with it really complemented the daikon flavour. Be forewarned: while it doesn't look like it, this dish is HOT as it's been fried, so bite carefully. My friends really enjoyed the Banh Xeo Crepe, although it seemed a bit messy to cut up and eat. The Satay Noodles weren't that spicy, which was perfect for the friends who didn't like spicy, but I ended up asking for chilli from the chef to spice it up. The friends who ordered the Do Chay Vermicelli found their dish was great and didn't need to add anything to it. The friend who ordered the Sweet and Spicy Bowl had to get half the dish packed to go as it was very filling (caaaaarbs!). She loved every bite though, and thought the sweet and spicy flavours complemented one another very well. The black lemonade was well liked and according to the friend who ordered it, it's a drink that they always get whenever they visit Do Chay. Overall, customer service was wonderful. Our server checked in on us frequently and made sure to come by and refill the tea whenever we emptied it out. Super informative and great at recommendations and accommodation requests, which we really appreciated. All in all? Would want to go back and try some more food another time and definitely would want to try that black lemonade! read more

A gem in Vancouver's "Little Saigon". My friend and I were literally hungry. We feasted on Coconut Rice Cakes, Uncle Hing's Wings, Spring Roll and Banh Xeo Crepe. Came here on a few separate occasions, and I have to say that the food here is amazing! Do Chay is a vegetarian Vietnamese restaurant?, hence its name, which means "vegetarian stuff". My friend and I ordered the desert land noodles, eggplant tofu rice dish, and the coconut rice cakes yesterday when we are there. Previously, I've also tried the pho and the lettuce wraps. I don't know of they have a different kitchen staff during dinner hours but it seems that their dinner service is more consistent? For example, I thought that the coconut rice cakes were much crunchier and creamer during dinner. Food was good as usual but I thought the desert island noodles was a bit bare bones. Chau Veggie has a really similar dish and they give you more "toppings". read more

Seem like this is new restaurant as i have been to this side of the city many times but didn't see it there before( at least in last 8 months) I actually found it online when i searched for vegetarian restaurant. To my astonishment it was packed after covid 19 opening and there was line up just for pick up or delivery guys. Wow, vietnamese do like vegetarian. Its a decent place to be. Not very big but accommodating with almost 25 people at one time. Clean bathrooms. Few compartment seating. Two window seatings and dinning style tables. Semi open kitchen but no bar. Complimentary hot green tea is always amazing but they also provide complimentary desert which is aome kind of rice pudding with beans. Not my taste though. I did try. Afterall it was complimentary but didn't like it. Otherwise everything else on menu looked so yummy by reading the descriptions. No doubt the two dishes me and my friend had were outstanding. Kabucha bowl( dont mistake it for kombucha) basically it's coconut curry tofu with nuts and rice. And other one was desert noodle which was basically dry odon noodle with some coconut milk gravy and spices. Raddishes n herb to garnish.
