A cold rainy city needs to have hearty fare that sticks to your bones. And if the cooking is fine and the raw ingredients are first rate, I will take that hearty fare in a summer heat wave too. * * * Naam has blueberry milkshakes to die for. Granted, all of the Pacific Northwest has amazing blueberries. Plenty of places make blueberry milkshakes. Blueberry milkshakes in season are just good. Most places in Vancouver do not make blueberry milkshakes. The 5% that do deserve all the loving you can give. * * * I ordered a Veggie wrap off of the "light" side of the menu. That "light" veggie wrap could have fed a lumberjack for an entire day. A heavy deep rich whole wheat tortilla was filled with potatoes (!!), homemade green salsa, homemade red salsa, and five or six other kinds of vegetables. The tortilla was burrito sized. This was way more solid eating than a Texas egg and potato taco. Or a plate of Texas egg and potato tacos. Fresh vegetables and fresh potatoes taste a heck of a lot better than driven-in-a-truck eggs and driven-in-a-truck potatoes. Green or red salsa is used in Texas to cover for the ho hum egg and potatoes that are in your Texas wrap. Green and red salsa on top of vegetables that don't need any help at all, but sure like to make friends? Sign me up. So we came and used out both my plant based deals. One was a BOGO free deal on summer drinks, and the other was 25% of any Kokomo bowl. My daughter got a Hibiscus lemonade, I got a Spearmint lemonade and we shared a Kokomo acai bowl which had frozen acai, berries, banana, raw granola (house-made), mint and toasted coconut. The drinks weren't bad but I wasn't blown away by them either. They were refreshing and thirst quenching for the hot summer day that it was. Don't think I need to try Spearmint lemonade again though. This was our first time trying and Acai bowl, and we are totally hooked on them now! I wanna learn how to make this at home now. It was so refreshing. Is there anything more satisfying than eating something that's healthy and tastes good too?! I suppose you could also just call it a smoothie bowl. Went with my family for a bday brunch. So for anyone who doesn't know, the Hafla experience is an AYCE experience. Not the kind where everyone in the restaurant is walking around, selecting all of their foods to put on their plates and then walking back to their own table with it. For this experience, each person chooses one main entree for themselves and then the restaurant brings a whole bunch of other dishes to accompany that main entree. Everyone at the table has to participate in the Hafla. You cannot have 3 people ordering Hafla, and 4 people ordering from the regular A la Carte menu. It's meant to be a family style sharing experience. Oh my goodness. What an experience this was. They brought sooo many dishes to the table. If I could make one suggestion to the restaurant to improve the experience for their customers, it would be to get bigger tables for the Hafla! Holy smokes...there was sooo much food on the table. At one point, the waitress came out with some baskets of pita bread to go with our food and asked where to put them. Ummm...wherever you can find space?! We had lots of leftovers by the end of the meal. I think my daughter said she counted at least 15 boxes of leftovers! This wasn't just All You Can Eat. This was More Than You Can Eat, cuz we were all super full from everything that they brought to us, and we never needed to ask for anything to be refilled as we couldn't even finish what they'd brought to us initially. What a feast! As for the food itself. I think the one thing that kinda fell short a bit was the Chickpea fries. I'd had these once before from their food truck a few years ago. I really enjoyed it back then. This time however, the Chickpea fries were not as impressive. Everything else on the table though was excellent. I don't know where else in Vancouver you can get a plant based AYCE meal, and this one was very impressive. Some standouts for me were the Cauliflower of Life, Hatzil Baladi (charred eggplant), and Baba Ganoush. A few of us ordered some drinks and those were pretty impressive as well. My daughter's Lavender Lychee Lemonade looked so lovely and refreshing. For myself I ordered a Chai Latte made with oat milk, and that was excellent. Oh, and you know how sometimes restaurants have menus on their websites and the menus don't match what's on the printed menu in the actual restaurant? Well this was the first time I was actually happy to see that the menu in the restaurant was different cuz online it says that the Hafla costs $42 per person but when we got to the restaurant it turned out to be only $40 per person. In this day and age, when things are usually only ever getting more expensive, it was a real treat to see that something had actually gone down in price for once! Highly recommend this place. I'll be back sometime for sure to try their regular, non AYCE menu!
