    Sausage gravy and biscuit
    Susan D.

Stopped in for brunch with a friend. Cozy place. We shared the cornbread- yum! My friend ordered chicken fingers- huge serving. She enjoyed it and took home leftovers. I ordered the sausage gravy and biscuit after asking the server about that option vs the tater tot option. He told me the biscuit was very good. I'm going to assume it was an off day. The biscuit was chewy- hard to cut with fork and knife. The sausage gravy had no taste- bland. I didn't eat it. It's kind of hard to mess up sausage gravy and biscuits so I suspect this was a one-off issue. I would return to try something else if in the area.

Visiting from Kentucky, was searching for a place for lunch close to the Museum for the Arts. Found this place on Open Table, loved the name being from Kentucky!! Everyone was attentive and the food was great. Only took a picture of the Hummus appetizer, which was delicious.

Came into town and needed to find a place that was central and could accommodate a dozen people. This looked like a good location and they were able to take my reservation on a lovely Saturday late morning with no problem. A good portion of the crew enjoy an alcoholic beverage with their meals and when I selected 5 Horses, I got a lot of positive shout outs for it. We had great service, especially for a large party. I ordered the Southern Comfort to split with the bf, which included eggs, fried chicken, a thyme biscut with a hearty sausage gravy along with a Honey Crisp Cider from Carlson Orchard. Oh my... what a fantastic dish! The eggs were cooked perfectly (medium over), the chicken was flavorful and crispy, the biscuit was also really tasty and they poured a delicious, savory sausage gravy over it to boot! My tastebuds were in heaven! The cider was sweet and also crisp and definitely a great compliment to the meal. The bf maybe ate a third of it since his stomach doesn't wake up until the afternoon but even he couldn't stop eating! I've taken my time to write this review, for no reason in particular, other than forgetting... and even after 5 months, I still think about this breakfast and can't wait to get back here sometime! As far as I remember, everyone enjoyed their meals and were quite content with the drink selection.

10 Stars!!! Mimi was our server and David was our beer guy. Mimi was quick and efficient. David was super knowledgeable about all the different beers in the area, on their tap, and what we would like according to our tastes. Food was excellent! I had their fish and chips. Fish was fried perfectly, crispy on the outside, moist and tender white flesh fish in the center. My wife also loved her Powerbowl salad and my son enjoyed his asian wings. Between the service and the food, I would tell all my friends in Boston to check out this place.

MIMOSA FLIGHT and some goofy lady

We received a recommendation from a friend of ours that lived in Boston for Five Horses because my husband loves craft beer and I love warm bars. We definitely checked that off the list here. The inside was mostly wood and just felt immediately warm - like it was inviting you to day We walked a little faster from our hotel than we thought so we got here literally as they were opening their doors for the day and it was already bustling. There was a World Cup game on that we weren't watching, but everyone else was interested in. I was interested in their mimosa flight - and it was PHENOMENAL. 4 different freshly squeezed juices with bubbles. Delightful. The staff had great suggestions about beer for my husband (he tried a few local options and enjoyed them), and helped me decide on a delicious taco to snack on. I did the Korean Style Chicken Taco and it was the perfect little nosh. Would definitely come back here to day drink or for brunch. I loved this place. So worth a walk in the December cold!

Came here on NYE to ring in the new year with some friends however it was very quiet- the restaurant was maybe at 3/8 capacity. We made the most of it and order some wings and tater tots along with a bottle of wine. The wings were huge and the tater tots were one of the best I've had. My friend ordered a hummus dish and pretzel. I didn't try either for a review. The music playing was very millennial which I appreciated. After we ate and chatted a bit we ended up relocating to another bar with some more nye excitement. Service was good, food served fast

    Fried Chicken Salad

This is a spot often visited. Fried chicken salad , hummus plate, burgers all delicious. Nice selection of beer for on tap and great ambiance with dark wood and cushioned seating. Always friendly service. Recommended.

tonights date night we decided to check out five horses tavern. the place was packed but we were able to get the last table. music was only playing on the bar side but the other side was still drunk as a few people had been overserved. the drinks were good a pink ghost for me and a red sangria for my other half. the chicken sandwich was lacking sauce it just had a tiny amount and tons of Lettuce the Forghorn leg horn flat bread had interesting toppings but they didn't serve well with the Flatbread that tasted like frozen pizza. the fact it was so packed makes me think we just ordered wrong I'll give it another try and update when I do. #datenight #Boston #Southend #willflyforfood #datenight #Massachusetts #chickensandwich #Flatbread #sangria

Food: Omg SO average for these prices. There was nothing particularly special about any of the dishes we had ordered. Location: Probably the best part - having gone to Northeastern, I LOVE the South End. SUPER stunning area with outdoor seating.

Salty Pig Pizza: A pizza with the same name as the restaurant! Who was the genius who came up with the idea of salted pig and beer caramel? It's brilliant! The salted pork appears to include Prosciutto di Parma from Langirano, Prosciutto Cotto, and Salcissia. Baking rendered the prosciutto's fat, which blends with the caramel to create a beautiful golden syrup that flows across the pizza's surface. The prosciutto was savory, oily, and tender; the minced salcissia retains its coarse texture and rich meaty aroma; the caramel was sweet and mellow with a honey-like sweetness, forming the top, middle, and base notes respectively. The arugula was slightly warmed, losing its astringent and raw taste while maintaining its crisp texture, helped to cut through the richness together with the Parmesan cheese powder. The crust was crispy, while the inside the dough was soft and chewy. The cooking time and seasoning were all just right, and the restaurant's proud wooden oven added a charming smoky flavor. Affogato: I had high expectations, but it was just okay. The espresso was too sour, and the vanilla ice cream couldn't balance it out. The almond biscuits had an overpowering almond flavor, and the flavor of plant-based protein was terrible! (Oh, this should have been a plus...)

We never had to ask for our glasses to be refilled, our waiter was attentive and professional. My husband had indicated on the online reservation that we were celebrating a birthday, and that was the only mention of our celebration. We walked into a unique space with dim lighting, stylish décor, and an energetic vibe that makes it feel like a great place for dinner with friends or a date night. The interior has a polished, slightly moody energy that fits the style of the food, and the layout accommodates both small tables and larger groups comfortably. It can get busy, so making a reservation is a good idea if you are planning to visit during peak hours. The biscuits are easily the standout item and are a must-order. They come out warm, buttery, and incredibly soft, making them one of the most memorable dishes on the menu. The restaurant is designed around sharing, so ordering a variety of small plates is the best way to experience it. We tried several dishes and found the flavors well balanced, with the shrimp and grits delivering a rich, savory depth and the fried chicken offering a crispy exterior with a juicy interior. The mac and cheese was creamy without being too heavy, and the variety of flavors across the menu made it easy to sample several different dishes in one meal. The cocktails are also worth exploring, with creative combinations that complement the food without overpowering it. Service was attentive throughout our visit, and the food arrived at a steady pace despite the restaurant being busy. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu and offered thoughtful recommendations, guiding us through the small plates format without pressure. The atmosphere stays lively without feeling overwhelming, though it is definitely on the louder side during dinner service. The energy of the room adds to the experience, and the pacing of the meal allowed us to enjoy each course without feeling rushed. Prices are a little higher than average, but that is expected for the Back Bay location and the quality of the food. Buttermilk & Bourbon is a great option if you are looking for creative Southern-inspired food in Boston. The combination of excellent biscuits, flavorful shareable plates, and a fun atmosphere makes it a destination for a meal that feels both polished and approachable. It is especially suited for dining with a group, where the format encourages exploration and sharing, and the lively setting adds to the sense of occasion.
