We stopped here to watch the football game and have dinner. There are many TVs so it's a great spot to watch sports. We ordered the nachos which I highly recommend. They are piled high with cheese, guac, sour cream, jalapeños, onions, etc. For entrees, we went with the Reuben sandwich which was so flavorful, and the grilled chicken sandwich. The grilled chicken was a bit dry, but the sweet potato fries were good. The service was not the friendliest as once we paid and left her a tip (over 20%) she never said thank you? Upon arrival we discovered they only serve breakfast on Sundays which was kind of a bummer, but we glanced over their menu and the rest seemed good. I got the fish tacos with sweet potato fries and my boyfriend got the fish sandwich with a cesar salad. He really liked his fish sandwich, he said it was a fresh piece of fish. My tacos were alright, I'm picky with fish tacos and I will say I've had better. These felt like I was at a pub or bar but they were okay. My friends and I dropped in for a quick, casual bite before the fireworks this Fourth of July. It was quite busy because of the holiday, but was quickly seated. I split the beacon hill cheeseburger with a friend and they gave it to us perfectly cut with equal amount of fries which was great! My other friend had the chicken wrap and she noted that it was yummy and flavorful, but a bit too saucy. Another friend had the bang bang shrimp and said that she would have preferred the sauce being already mixed in instead of being beneath the fried shrimp. Served two people, peas in it were excellent, the truffle was tasteful and delicious. Dish didn't need anything else, normally I find I like my Mac with more salt and pepper. I visit here after work. it's just a 10 minute walk and it's enjoyable. Yesterday, I ordered the chicken piccata since they removed the chicken parm from the menu (without my permission! ) The chicken piccata sauce was delicious and garlic bread was a good accompaniment. The only ding was the chicken. It could have benefited from a breading of some kind since the taste was kind of bland. I could easily have drank the sauce. It was that good. I had a coco rum and it went down easily. That sauce, though. Don't change a thing! Adelaide gave very good service. She was attentive and also remembered my to go order of a Reuben sandwich for my dad. The ambiance? The place itself is full of history. It's near MGH and doctors and interns are rumored to eat there. I'll try to visit more often than I have been. This is an awesome spot to hang out for a quick bite and drink after work. The staff is incredibly friendly and the service is pretty fast. It's not a fancy restaurant and bar by any means but it has all the necessities, high top tables, coat hooks, big bar, and groups seating areas. The food itself is good. I can be a germ phobia so it may have been me over sensitive but when I saw the condition of the kitchen which is across from restroom it really made me feel sick. I came here with a big group for Saturday brunch. One of the few spots in Boston where we were able to book a last minute reservation. They have plenty of seating, so that usually helps. To start, we got the breakfast loaded tots for the table to share. One of the members of our party was vegetarian, so they were able to put the bacon on the side. In terms of the main meal, everyone seemed pretty happy with what they ordered. I got the meatlovers omlette, which was pretty big and came with a nice portion of home fries. The huevos rancheros and eggs benedict also looked delicious. Compared to some other brunch spots in Boston, I'd say this place is solid, but not the best. I would prefer Cafe Luna in Cambridge, but they tend to book up faster and they are a bit more expensive. Next time, I'd like to come back and try some of their more traditional bar food offerings! read more

It tasted like watered down tomato juice. We asked for Tabasco, which also seemed to be watered down. Got pretzel sticks, horrible, not pretzel bread at all, just burned breadsticks. And the sauces for the breadsticks were, you guessed it, runny and thin and tasted watered down. The blue cheese with the chicken tenders, watered down! Nothing we had was good. We stopped here after visiting a loved one at MGH. It was close and the reviews made the restaurant look decent. First impression was that it was old, dark, and dirty inside. The restaurant wasn't super busy as we were hitting it on the tail end of the lunch rush. We stood at the front for 10 minutes. Servers buzzed by the front, but no one acknowledged us. I figured that there was a host that was busy somewhere and that is why the servers were ignoring us. Finally, one of the servers stopped and brought us to a table. I have a gluten allergy, so I had a few questions on the menu. The menu was not super clear on what was safe. The server, Louis, did offer to grab the gluten free menu. This menu was not on their website, as I would have already looked at it ahead of time, if it was. But by that time we had already figured out that what I was looking at was safe. Food was mediocre. We had salads. My husband's chicken was woody. Both salads were barely dressed. The dressing was tasty, but there was just so little of it on the salad. I would have asked for a little more dressing, but the server never came back after someone else had dropped the food off. When we were done eating another server picked up our plates. I ran to the bathroom after eating and saw our server hanging out in the wait station. He did not look busy. We then waited 25 minutes for our check. At that point we asked another server if they were able to get our check. Louis then came by and snottily dropped off the check at our table. He just threw it down as he stormed passed us without saying a word. He was clearly annoyed that we just didn't want to hang out all day in the restaurant while he hung out in the wait station, hiding from his guests. Another server cashed us out, because again, our server was no where to be found. We hopefully will not have to go back to the hospital any time soon, but if we did, this would NOT be the place to go. Boston has so much to offer. People should skip this one!!! read more

I've been here a few times and the food was just ok. On our visit last night a Monday in April, everything was great. I had a Guinness that was perfectly poured. The calamari was excellent. Came here for brunch with my boyfriend--really liked it and would definitely come back! The food was rich and comforting and the perfect reward for waking up and going outside on a weekend morning. We got the breakfast loaded tots, which I think were the star of the table! Yolk porn on top was perfect and the creamy, cheesy, bacony taste on top of crispy tots made me keep going back for "one more bite" even when I was full. The breakfast pizza was also really good and quite a lot of food. It had scrambled eggs instead of a fried egg which I would have preferred for the flavor, BUT scrambled eggs are much less likely to spill all over you when you pick up a pizza slice for a bite (so still happy with the pizza!). I only recommend this place if you are a visitor or the "other person" of a patient at MGH and you want to get an alcoholic beverage... like a Bloody,... when you've been waiting for your person to get out of a 4 hour surgery! The bloody was actually very delicious! The interior is par and somewhat old and dirty. The ladies room is TINY. I had to wait in my stall until the other person was done using the sink so I could actually maneuver to the sink to wash my hands. I didn't try any food so I can't speak for that but I didn't order any food for a reason. Not sure I would trust the cleanliness of the kitchen. read more

It's a vintage (est. 1930) gastropub/dive bar vibe except with a bunch of flatscreens everywhere. I ordered a margherita pizza and fries. The fries were perfectly salted and golden crisp. The Margherita pizza taste good, but the cheese kept falling off. I'm not sure if that's typical with a Margherita pizza?? Now is the time for an update on this Beacon Hill institution. I've had lunch here twice in the past couple of months and I've bumped them up to 5 stars. I will be forever grateful to Harvard Gardens ownership and staff who throughout the worst of the Covid pandemic, provided regular FREE lunches to those of us working onsite at Massachusetts General Hospital. I know that Mass General employees have always been loyal customers anyway but HG went above and beyond to make sure that those of us who were essential employees and had to be onsite were well fed and felt cared for ourselves. A number of local restaurants did this too (and I am grateful to them as well!) Most days there was a free lunch from one restaurant or another which was so greatly appreciated. But I have to say that I remember Harvard Gardens doing this many more times than others. I respect Harvard Gardens for their commitment to frontline hospital workers and I will forever be a happy (and well-fed) patron. Although I did work throughout the pandemic, I retired from MGH at the end of May. That said, I of course will continue to patronize Harvard Gardens where truth be told, I have never had a bad meal. The food is solid American fare. There is a bar area too where I have spent many a fun time after work with colleagues. Forget "Cheers"...(ugh), Harvard Gardens is the place where "everybody knows your name"...and even if they don't, you're treated well and will leave happy. I have to travel into Boston tomorrow to run some errands but I have made plans for lunch with a friend and we will be meeting here. Great American food, reasonable prices, nice environment, clean bathrooms and great staff. Thank you Harvard Gardens for everything you did for us at MGH during the pandemic.
