Ma Maison is my fiancé and I's favorite French restaurant! It's always at the top of our list when deciding a restaurant for special occasions. I've also never had anyone tell us they do not like the restaurant once they try our recommendation. It's a small, cozy, dimly lit restaurant located at a corner near MGH. Street parking may be tough but there are garages around. The hospital garage may be a bit pricey; I believe the restaurant can validate for another garage nearby. Our must order items from the menu include seared foie gras (5/5), duck magret a l'Orange (5/5), escargot (5/5), french onion soup (5/5, and steak tartare (4/5). I love using their bread to dip with the escargot and eat with the foie gras as they do not come with carbs. During my last visit, I tried the boneless short ribs Bourguignon, I felt like it was a bit dry. I loved the potato croquette that came with the dish though, creamy on the inside with a crispy exterior. The meat did not fall off and melt, maybe it was just that one day. I will stick to ordering duck as my entree as it has never failed us and the cook and flavors are also supreme. Creme brulee is always great to end the meal! Chose this spot due to good reviews and short distance from our hotel. Ordered the: 1.Lobster Bisque. 4.5/5 This was very good. Good chucks of lobster. Bisque was creamy and flavorful. Some of the best food I've had in Boston, possibly the best French food in Boston. Came here on a whim and was so happy to get a reservation, it's a very intimate space but we felt comfortable at our table. Food was superb from top to bottom and was also mostly gluten free which was a nice surprise for the gluten free member of our party. Ma Maison is a small cosy French restaurant on Cambridge Street. We liked the decor. I ordered the lamb with mashed potatoes & gravy and my friend ordered the Chicken Coq Au Vin with buttered noodles. We shared Crepes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream with an overly sweet syrup. I would skip that and order a different dessert next time. The tables are very close together and the restroom is tiny and the door is heavy. I had an Aperol spritz and my friend had white wine. Hubby and I love you she had previously cheese soufflé and steak, which is the special on Tuesday night. She highly recommended it. She was right. She and I tried both. And it really was excellent. When eating steak you must dip it into the gravy at the very bottom of the container. Makes a big difference. We started with the lobster bisque which was split. It was nice and two bites of lobster in the soup, though not my favorite lobster fish, which is up to seafood in Salem. It was very nice and very good flavor. I ordered the chicken thigh with noodles and it was good. But not great and I wouldn't order it again. It is a very large portion and I was able to get two more meals from it. It was good, but not great. Hubby order the scallops, which were excellent and I would recommend them. That will be my order next visit. The dessert was spectacular. Hubby got the three scoops of sorbet and I had a giant profiterole which was quite large and really excellent. The only criticism I could have is that rather than a chocolate I'd rather be a thicker fudge type of topping. Our waiter was very good and very helpful, and able to remove all the dishes in one trip which was amazing also amazing was the warm bread to start out a nice Italian bread it was a big hit. The restaurant is a lovely little ode to downtown Boston with its charming little dining room, prep area in the back, and little bathroom with a super heavy door. The lunch service was very attentive. I got the salad with panko fried goat cheese and the lobster bisque. The salad, dressing, and fried cheese were vibrant and refreshing. The food was good but service was so so but not necessarily from our waiter. We sat outside, the left of the restaurant and I think we kept getting forgotten about or the waiter wasn't told. Then it started to pour rain and we asked the host if we could possibly get a table inside seeing that there were tables open and we were just waiting to eat our entrees and leave. But she refused and said we would have to wait but our waiter was very nice and sat us and we ate in like 10 mins after our food arrived and by that time there were many open tables so I don't know what the fuss was about. Ma Maison is a favorite when I visit Boston. The service and food are great. It is a small place. I will consider calling first.

What needs to be said first? It's between two considerations: 1) the ridiculous value offered or 2) the best "I want world class services, but without the pretension" staff. It's hard to pick between the two. The value encompasses how damned good the food is, the latter brings with it how you feel after the meal. Maybe I'll figure out as the review gets typed, but from the top, I'm not able to choose between the two. Let's talk ambiance: it's a small, intimate dining room. It's French: any surprise there? The dining room is warm and cozy but not cramped. The waitstaff extremely knowledgeable about the bill of fair without any semblance of pretension while remarkably efficient and attentive. They know how the dishes are prepared and how to tweak their recommendations accordingly given your whim. Even if the food was subpar, a meal would still feel good. But the food isn't subpar. It's simple, rich, savory, and depthy. You know, French. I'm no aficionado regarding French food- where I've lived the majority of my life offers BBQ as a delicacy and 'fried' as a standard. Regardless, to someone of my sensibility, this is French as phenomenal. That said, food: the escargot and foie gras. There's not much that needs to be done to in order to make either exceptional. A slight accent and proficient preparation begets tastebud orgasm. Yep, said it. I'm not your huckleberry when it comes to rabbit food, though the dressing on the salad was refreshing, the greens very fresh, and the panko crusted goat cheese a wonderful accompaniment. A nice parlay before the clash of the meal. Let's get down to the get down: duck and beef. The short rib was spot on perfect when it came to texture. Acidity from the wine allowed the savor to simmer to the top of the bite, the fat having been extracted and seeped into the muscle. The jus should be offered as a digestif. Excellent. The duck, well this is where things get surreal. Cooked with attention towards contrast in texture, the subtle undertones of sweet from the blood orange eschewed the gaminess from consideration while keeping the distinctive duckiness of the fowl in present at the front and back of the bite. The sauce became unnecessary; I used it as a dip, and only sparingly so. The Brussels were very simple, a light dusting of cheese went perfectly with the remarkably delicate texture (for Brussels)- they held together without having any pushback, crunch, or fibrous resolve. Often duck leaves me underwhelmed- there's so much that can be done with it, but few rarely attend to each variable. Ma Maison's presentation accentuated contrasts: moist with crisp, sweet with earthy (I'm not going to say 'gamey'), light with heavy. There's savoring a dish one bite at a time, allowing the taste to permeate and reveal itself in an interlude while sensing the texture (yada, yada); this is somewhere far above that. Get a croquette to sop up whatever jus is hanging around. The French onion soup had excellent taste, but wasn't quite as thick or as savory as I had had elsewhere in Boston. On the one hand, I get it; no need to present a wallop of a dish that early in the meal, but, on the other hand, I had my elastic waisted pants on (figuratively and maybe spiritually). All told, no deductions. On this trip, best meal while in Beantown. Go there. Enjoy. If Rissa is your server, you'll be treated to an experience par excellence. read more

All the yummy escargot!! Took my boyfriend here to celebrate his bday and we had an amazing dinner with all the bells and whistles. The restaurant is super cute and intimate. I really like the silver dishes and plates hanging on the walls and the cute snail figurines that are spread thought-out the restaurant. Since it was a special occasion we decided to get a whole bottle of French wine to share. It was very good and at a reasonable price! We wanted some appetizers and the very nice and attentive waiter suggested their butternut squash soup and we went with that. We were also super curios about the escargot in the menu because neither of us had never tried it and decided to go for it. We also wanted a small salad to share and they had a few to choose from. The soup was amazing! It was super creamy and buttery and rich and it really hit the spot especially on that rainy night. But the escargot! OMG! so good! They were literal bombs of garlic and butter in my mouth! I could of eaten a bucket of them! I would definitely get them again especially at a French restaurant. For our entrees we ordered the duck liver and duck breast. Both were very good and came with hearty sides. To close out the night we each got a coffee and since the restaurant knew it was my boyfriends bday they brought out a slice of delicious cake with a candle for him which was so nice! It took her 15 minutes to bring us bread after we asked, and when we tried to order drinks and appetizers while the rest of our party was still parking, she waved me off and walked away. Ma Maison -- a hidden gem that outshines nearly every French bistro in Boston I say this as someone who's spent over 40 years savoring fine dining--from Michelin-starred tables in Paris to New York's most celebrated spots--and Ma Maison still makes me smile. The Lamb Shank is transcendent, the foie gras melts like velvet, and the Onion Soup could bring tears of joy to Escoffier himself. I still dream of the Cassoulet (currently off-menu--bring it back, s'il vous plaît!) and finish every meal with either the Baked Alaska or Profiteroles, depending on my mood. Unlike so many haute cuisine restaurants where portion size seems inversely related to quality, Ma Maison believes generosity is part of good taste. The value here is as satisfying as the food. The location is small so tables closer to each other, but the service and ambiance makes it feel cozy and warm. We made reservations which I recommend you do before hand. We started with escargots which were large, plump and garlicky. Tasty with the warm loaf of French bread they served. Hubs also wanted the steak tartare and this was THE BEST he's ever had! If it's on the menu, he'll order it so he's had a lot of steak tartares. For dinner he chose the lamb which was juicy and deliciously prepared! I ordered the Dover Sole which was buttery, flakey and fresh. The dessert was really why I chose Ma Maison (aside from the Dover Sole)! We ordered the Grand Marnier Soufflé and made the mistake of ordering just one because we were both so, so sad when we reached the bottom! We wanted more so we decided to try the chocolate soufflé. After another patient wait (because it's made fresh to order), we dove into it. It's fluffy and good, but certainly wasn't the Grand Marnier soufflé! That first soufflé was light, fluffy, sweet and pillowy. It was delicious bite after bite! I'm still thinking about it and wish I can find something even partially as good as this one at home near Chicago. We just finished visiting a relative at Mass General and were looking for a lunch restaurant nearby. Look no further! Just across the road on Massachusetts is this lovely French bistro. Authentic to a T, with a wonderful lunch menu and an appealing wine selection, all wrapped in brick and decorated with classic touches. We did not have a reservation but fortunately there was a table for 2 available. We were greeted enthusiastically and seated promptly. Service was excellent throughout. The couple from Cognac next to us, speaking in French, is always a good indication that you're in the right place. We ordered a Sancerre and Rose along with escargot as a starter. To close out my trip to Boston with a strong finish, I left Ma Maison the last restaurant to visit. The reviews hyped me up, but it was very underwhelming. The restaurant, like most of Boston, is in an older building with a small dining room. Great for people watching if you get a table by the windows. I ordered the organic cheeseburger and strawberry baked Alaska. For the burger, I requested the meat to be medium and it came out bleeding. When I asked if it could be cooked longer, it came back well done and dry. Instead of complaining a second time, I just ate it. At least the raw onions were good. The fries were salty - just how I like them - though they rivaled McDonald's. To be honest, I did not like the strawberry baked Alaska. It didn't have the same quality as other baked Alaskas I've had in the past. The texture of the meringue was more like sticky marshmallow spread instead of fluffy clouds. It didn't tasted like it had be toasted and it was way too hard to scoop with a spoon. Similarly, the bottom was hard to separate. It tasted like a frozen shortcake that wasn't defrosted all the way. I should have gone with the giant profiterole. Very disappointed as I pushed my flight back just to dine here. The slow baked salmon was a thick, generous portion, and nicely cooked - it was tender and the skin was crispy. The bacon and peas added great flavor. I went to Ma Maison for dinner on a Sunday early evening and it was one of the best experiences I had with French food in Boston. Starters: - Bread: The free bread came in warm and with butter, and it was good. - Cocktail: St. Tropez, made of House Champagne, Cointreau, and Orange Juice. It was strong and delicious. No ice in it. - Country pâté: The pâté came with tiny cornichons and a sauce that is probably mustard. It has a great texture (chunky/meaty and not as creamy/mushy as other pates I've had), and is not too salty, and the sauce complements the pate well. - French onion soup: Exactly what you want on a chilly Boston night. It has a thick blanket of cheese. The soup is not too salty, so you can really taste the sweet onion flavor. - Seared foie gras: Very flavorful, not overcooked at all, and in a berry/red-wine style sauce with a poached pear. Mains: - Duck breast with orange sauce: got medium rare, the outside is crispy, and the inside is very tender. Not gamey. The portion size was good. The orange sauce really complements the duck well. - Lamb chops with potato: got medium rare, very tender as well. It is juicy inside, with a noticeable of gamey/lamb flavor, but not off-putting. The creamy potatoes are really good! - Ratatouille side: We got this as a side, but it wasn't too memorable. Most of the plates came to the table super hot (so that the food won't get cold), so be careful of that. Overall Service was warm, and the pacing of the meal felt relaxed.
