Ma Maison is a favorite when I visit Boston. The service and food are great. It is a small place. I will consider calling first.

To close out my trip to Boston with a strong finish, I left Ma Maison the last restaurant to visit. The reviews hyped me up, but it was very underwhelming. The restaurant, like most of Boston, is in an older building with a small dining room. Great for people watching if you get a table by the windows. I ordered the organic cheeseburger and strawberry baked Alaska. For the burger, I requested the meat to be medium and it came out bleeding. When I asked if it could be cooked longer, it came back well done and dry. Instead of complaining a second time, I just ate it. At least the raw onions were good. The fries were salty - just how I like them - though they rivaled McDonald's. To be honest, I did not like the strawberry baked Alaska. It didn't have the same quality as other baked Alaskas I've had in the past. The texture of the meringue was more like sticky marshmallow spread instead of fluffy clouds. It didn't tasted like it had be toasted and it was way too hard to scoop with a spoon. Similarly, the bottom was hard to separate. It tasted like a frozen shortcake that wasn't defrosted all the way. I should have gone with the giant profiterole. Very disappointed as I pushed my flight back just to dine here. The service was friendly, but I don't think the quality of my meal was due to having an off day. read more

I went to Ma Maison for dinner on a Sunday early evening and it was one of the best experiences I had with French food in Boston. Starters: - Bread: The free bread came in warm and with butter, and it was good. - Cocktail: St. Tropez, made of House Champagne, Cointreau, and Orange Juice. It was strong and delicious. No ice in it. - Country pâté: The pâté came with tiny cornichons and a sauce that is probably mustard. It has a great texture (chunky/meaty and not as creamy/mushy as other pates I've had), and is not too salty, and the sauce complements the pate well. - French onion soup: Exactly what you want on a chilly Boston night. It has a thick blanket of cheese. The soup is not too salty, so you can really taste the sweet onion flavor. - Seared foie gras: Very flavorful, not overcooked at all, and in a berry/red-wine style sauce with a poached pear. Mains: - Duck breast with orange sauce: got medium rare, the outside is crispy, and the inside is very tender. Not gamey. The portion size was good. The orange sauce really complements the duck well. - Lamb chops with potato: got medium rare, very tender as well. It is juicy inside, with a noticeable of gamey/lamb flavor, but not off-putting. The creamy potatoes are really good! - Ratatouille side: We got this as a side, but it wasn't too memorable. Most of the plates came to the table super hot (so that the food won't get cold), so be careful of that. Overall Service was warm, and the pacing of the meal felt relaxed. A very cute date spot! The restaurant is small so I would recommend making a reservation. The service and food were good, nothing blew us away but I'd definitely return. We had the escargot, lobster bisque, duck, veal, and the chocolate soufflé for dessert. The escargot was good and as expected! The lobster bisque had a good portion of lobster but tasted fishy. I wouldn't recommend getting it, not sure if it's always like that. I did enjoy the duck but it was not up to par with other French restaurants in Boston. The meat was cooked a perfect medium rare but the flavor was lacking a bit. The veal was good but I am not a veal fan so I cannot comment! The chocolate soufflé was the item I was most looking forward to. It was unfortunately a bit watery and the flavor was not a deep chocolate, more like a light milk chocolate. I've had plenty of soufflés so I will not be getting it here again! Overall, I would recommend coming here even though there were some misses. I've passed by this place so many times, but never stopped in for whatever reason. My friend had a birthday dinner here and it was the perfect spot for a more upscale dinner. When we arrived, the hostess was a bit curt with us, given there was some confusion with the reservation. The rest of the staff was very kind. Based on my entreé (Lamb Shank), I would have given this place 5 stars. The lamb was very tender and full of flavor. However, I think some of the other dishes were more deserving of a 4. If you're vegan/vegetarian, I wouldn't recommend this place, as your options will be pretty limited. I'd return again for a special occasion. read more

The restaurant is very small and quaint so reservations are definitely recommended. Every seat was filled at 6:30pm. The service was exceptional but the food was the main event. My wife and I started off with a bowl of lobster bisque with chunks of lobster, we then shared a 14oz veal chop cooked to perfection and topped with a mushroom cream sauce sauce, along with a side of mashed potatoes. This is my second time I have gone here and they did not disappoint! The portion sizes are large, so everyone had left overs. The quality and flavor of the food was excellent. We went to Ma Maison for the first time yesterday and it certainly won't be our last. They had an outstanding Christmas menu - I had a lovely smoked salmon mousse with smoked salmon, capers and creme fraiche and then a scrumptious sea bass in champagne sauce. This review is for the restaurant and not necessarily the food. I am from out of town and found this charming French bistro-like restaurant in Beacon Hill online. I made a future reservation and was looking forward to having dinner here for my final night in Boston. Unfortunately, we were not prepared for the traffic congestion or one-way resident only parking streets around the restaurant. I contacted the restaurant that we were running late and trying to find parking. I was told that they validated parking at the Charles Street garage for $15, which we proceeded to get to and would be at the restaurant shortly. When we arrived at the restaurant, I found the restaurant to be much smaller than anticipated, and tables were almost on top of one another. I didn't see any open tables as the diners were pretty packed in. When I checked in with the hostess, I discovered that they had given my reserved table away because I didn't show up on time. She indicated that she would have a table opened up in 20 minutes that were on dessert. Frustrated that they didn't hold my reservation and the restaurant was overpacked and hot, I declined to wait and went elsewhere. Maybe the locals are more knowledgeable on how to maneuver in the area, but the lack of empathy for an out of towner was annoying. As a frequent visitor to France, I am sorry that I was not able to experience chef Jacky Robert's spin on the French classics, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise. I had great hopes for Ma Maison but it just didn't do it for me. Perhaps it was an off day, but the only parts of the meal I enjoyed was the wine and the bread. Although the rhubarb compote/sauce was delicious, the foie gras itself was just...not great. And I have no idea why the plate needed to be served at 400 degrees. My sausage entree was just... not good. I've never had sausage of this texture, it was like super blended purée and reminded me of when I put rabbit through my blender so that my dog doesn't choke on it. And it had a bizarre aftertaste. My friend did, however, enjoy her salmon very much. For desert we decided to splurge and got the chocolate soufflé and the napoleon. The soufflé was soggy, and their twist on the napoleon had hard wafer type layers instead of thin soft crepe-like layers. The best part was the scoop of ice cream- tasted home made and truly wonderful. The service was fine, but considering every plate they cleared was at least half full, I'm surprised no one said anything. I wanted to stop in for oysters and a glass of wine before a flight, so came in at like 3 PM. Lady at the door was a little snooty about the whole thing (esp. bc I came in with my suitcase I guess) but didn't turn me away. Due to that first encounter I was pretty nervous about dining here, but felt welcomed by the wait staff and I'm glad I ultimately stayed because the food and ambience were awesome! Got a glass of sancerre -- coming from SF, I was astonished by the fishbowl-size serving of wine for my $$! So so worth it for the price, at the local wine bar in SF you'd get a glass half the size for the same price lol. So pleasantly surprised. Oysters were awesome as well. PLUS, complimentary baguette that came with the most delicious, savory butter. Super great meal! Everything on the menu looks delicious, and I'm sad I didn't have the appetite to try more stuff. Feeling French (: I would go here again if I was in the mood for French food and if I was in the Beacon Hill area of Boston. My friends and I got the cutest corner, window table. The restau' had major French vibes with the French speaking staff, small tables, smells of yummy sauces and scenes of celebration and people in deep conversations. Third venture here, perfect day for secluded outdoor dining. Hostess and server Blake were welcoming and outstanding. My friend made reservations at 8:45 on a Saturday night. We arrived slightly late, but that was not a problem as they were still in the process of finishing up with the table prior to us. We got seated in a quaint and cute ambience. Tables were pretty close together which was reminiscent of France itself. For an appetizer, we share the chunky duck and cabbage soup. It was a perfect starter for our meal, and the bowl was just enough to share between two people. They even offered us a small second bowl so that we could split it. It was slightly fatty in a clear broth. Entrees consisted of the lamb shank and veal. Both were served on the bone which provided even more flavor than without. The mushroom cream sauce with the veal was to die for, coming from a sucker for mushrooms. The reduction with the lamb over the couscous was divine. I preferred the lamb over the veal as it was more tender and moist, but both were great. Since we weren't too sure for a red choice of wine, we asked our kind waitress for her recommendation based on what we had intended to order. She was more than happy to ask the Chef who suggested the Plan de dieu which was slightly sweet and dry, perfect for the meal. Came here for our anniversary dinner on a trip to Boston, and was kinda disappointed. Ambiance/service: The ambiance and service were probably the redeeming points for me? Definitely a cute little date spot with moody lighting and homey-style decor. Our server was nice! I think there was confusion on the dessert for our celebration - we ended up getting two desserts (one we paid for) instead of the just one. Food: I'm really not sure if French cuisine just isn't in my palette or if it was an off night? Our reservation was around 8:15 so close to closing so maybe it was that? I've had escargot before, but this one tasted really really earthy - the garlic butter didn't do much to make up for it. The bread and butter both needed more flavor - I get simplicity to accentuate the ingredients, but it didn't taste like anything really. The French onion soup was almost lukewarm so it was a bit off putting. The entrees had similar tasting sauces but they were lacking depth - they kinda just tasted like straight wine with almost no other seasoning. The meat (both the beef and the chicken) were a little overcooked so we were chewing through. The best part of the meal was that we were together, celebrating. I'm so glad I came here to eat. It's on the corner between Cambridge and Anderson so it's close to Beacon Hill via walking. We made a reservation for 8:45pm on a Thursday night and it was jam packed! Definitely recommend a reservation, which is super easy via OpenTable. Let's get to the meat of it though. For starters we ordered the foie gras, escargot, and French onion soup. The soup really is warming and who can say no to caramelized onion? Foie gras is a first for me, it's very fatty and rich. Honestly, I couldn't have finished without the pear served alongside it. The escargot is so good, parsley and butter is a delicious way to pair something that is unfamiliar. I loved it! Apparently this dish to serve it is what they do in France as well, so very classic French methodology. My boyfriend ordered the lamb shank with ratatouille and it was delicious. Though not as delicious as my duck magret! The ratatouille definitely had some eggplant in there, a rich flavor mixed with all the mushrooms and veggies. We weren't too big of a fan of the Merguez Sausage with the lamb but it has a very unique flavor to it. My duck was so beautiful, medium rare and still that duck flavor and fat. The orange sauce with the duck was so good, my boyfriend kept dipping his lamb into it! Finishing off the meal, we had the pear custard. When visiting a French restaurant I have high expectations. The food tends to be exquisite and some dishes are here. The Foie Gras is amazing and so are all the deserts we tried. However the escargot which is something I always try at French restaurants was only ok. The service varies on who your server is as we had friends who came to the restaurant after we sat and we ordered before they even got their menus and yet they had their appetizers first. When looking for someone to call for a refill and even when we wanted the menus for desert, it is very difficult to catch anyone looking at your table as if each waiter will only look at their own table only. On the bright side they brought us water as soon as we sat and refilled it often. That is how I would get someone's attention...finish my water so someone could come by and I could ask for something. The place is very small and you will have to be a party of two and be lucky to get a table without a reservation, which is what happened with our friends..who came in a little after we sat and were hoping they could sit with us, but with such little space it seemed unlikely they would even be able to get a table but as they were asking a table for two was leaving. Its rather on the expensive side which can be understood with the quality of some of the dishes, however I would except everything to be great for these prices. So light and airy, and the Reese's pieces were such a nice textural contrast, but if you don't have a sweet tooth, probably skip it. I tried the scallops from a friend's plate and they were so fresh and tender! I completely devoured the steak tartare, I am a big fan of raw meat, and this just satisfied a craving. Got to the restaurant an hour before our reservation, and luckily there was a table available. The host was kind and promptly directed us to the open table. The restaurant was super lively. The soup was delicious, had thick cheese, and lots of onion; the flavors were so aromatic and delicious. The lamb chop was also extravagant. So tender, the meat was just falling off the bone. There was a nice tomato sauce with an array of vegetables. For dessert, I ordered the pistachio napoleon. The cream was quite thick, a bit too much for my taste. But my friend, a lover if pistachios, assured that it was perfect. The vanilla ice cream that accompanies the dessert helps to get the napoleon down the throat. It is not salty or greasy. The baguette soaked in it is delicious Foie Gras Highly recommended! A vegetable with a taste similar to yellow peach is paired with foie gras. It melts in your mouth. It is recommended to order 2oz, which is just right for one person Burgundy Escargots General, you can order it or not Steamed Mussels Highly recommended! I forgot to take a picture and was only focused on eating. The taste of white wine completely diluted the fishy smell of mussels. There is sausage in the sauce. It is delicious to eat alone or with bread. NY Steak The sauce is quite special. It tastes a bit like butter, sour and salty. I suggest ordering medium rare for a more tender steak. Frog Legs The top 1 of this meal! ! This dish is only available on the dinner menu. The frog meat is super tender. It is coated with a thin layer of flour so it absorbs juice very well. The sauce is amazing. The rice at the bottom has been soaked up by the sauce. The whole dish tastes like Chinese food. Duck Magret My friend said that it feels like I can come back to life in the next second. The duck meat is very tender. The sauce is very similar to plum sauce. If you can't eat it raw, don't order it. Lamb Shank The stewed lamb has a strong wine flavor but not smelly. In fact, I prefer the lamb with a stronger flavor. Short Ribs Recommended! The beef is very soft and tender. The wine flavor is completely integrated with the meat. It is very tasty. It is paired with crispy mashed potatoes with fried skin. The menu and price of dinner are different from those of lunch. Lunch is generally cheaper, but there are also some dishes that are only available at dinner. You can choose by yourself. read more

A cute French restaurant in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood - smaller than I expected (read: cosier?) but not too cramped. We had reservations for 12:15 on a Sunday, and when we arrived the restaurant was around half-full; we were seated shortly after they cleared off our table. For my main I ordered the short rib bourguignon and my friend had the salmon filet. Beef was quite heavy - the sauce was a bit too salty/heavy for my taste, and the beef was slightly dry and chewy. Portion sizes were massive (perhaps commensurate for the price, although I would have preferred a smaller meal at a lower price). The potato croquette was tasty - nicely crispy exterior with tasty mashed potatoes on the inside. It's surprisingly large so a bit difficult to eat without it disintegrating haha. The salmon was not bad, too, although definitely on the heavy side (and same large portion size, too). All in all, an OK experience. I think I'd be keen to visit again, but I'd probably order something lighter next time (a croque maison or something; seemed to be quite tasty looking around at neighbouring tables). read more

I've lived on Beacon Hill and can kick myself for not trying this restaurant earlier. Authentic (or as authentic as you can get outside of France) French food with American-sized portions. Everyone in my party got sandwiches, which came with fries and a salad. Mine had ratatouille, which I ate with a fork and knife. Simply incredible! I have never heard of Ma Maison, however, was brought here for my birthday dinner. Ever since dining here, I've been recommending to everyone. Walking into Ma Maison, you are welcomed by an intimate, dressy, & cultural atmosphere. I simply forgot I was in Boston. The hostess took us to our table & actually pulled the table out to create more room to get into the booth along the wall. It's the little things that matter! We started with a glass of red & one of the french cocktails. I believe the cocktail was Prosecco and a raspberry liquor. For food, we ordered the short rib and duck dishes. Excellent small French Bistro doing very brisk business on a freezing cold Boston weeknight. The service was friendly and spot on. The Ma Maison Cosmopolitan was great, tart and just what I wanted. The Foie Gras, which I only order in French restaurants, was lightly seared and delicious. And it did not deter me from ordering duck a l'orange, which was cooked to perfection. Love French cuisine. Very authentic and price wise reasonable. We enjoyed the food and atmosphere.
