A great affordable bistro. The menu is manageable so each dish is prepared exceptionally. Unlike other restaurants Petit Robert doesn't try to be everything they do what they do best. The ambiance is exceptional in the warm weather al fresco dining with great seating in a quiet neighborhood. In the winter it is a warm and cozy atmosphere. I had high hopes, but unfortunately the service completely ruined the experience before it even began. I was seated and waited 10 minutes without anyone acknowledging me--no greeting, no water, and no one taking a drink order, despite multiple servers walking right past my table. I eventually tried to wave someone down, and the server responded by putting her hand up in a "stop" gesture, as if to tell me to wait. It came across as surprisingly rude. After about 15 minutes, I got up and asked if I had a server because I'd been waiting so long. The two staff members I spoke to barely looked up and casually told me they'd get to me when they could. At that point, I decided to leave. Beyond the lack of service, the staff seemed disengaged and sloppy, and the overall atmosphere just had bad vibes. I understand restaurants get busy, but a simple acknowledgment or a quick "We'll be right with you" goes a long way. Instead, I left feeling like my presence was an inconvenience. read more

Came in after social media was blasting the bottomless steak frites! Fries are standard fries crispy and i can always eat fries! Steak, not sure what cut maybe sirloin. It was cooked well, you each get a full plate of steak first with a pepper sauce. When you want more the server comes back periodically with a plate of sliced beef to drop on your plate. The steak itself for us wasn't seasoned at all, the sauce helped immensely. We also requested salt and pepper shakers. At $39 per person you can't go wrong, just ask for more sauce and condiments. Service was cool, staff is friendly and sparks conversations with the patrons around, so you'll just need to get their attention when you need something. The bread was good. Went to Petit Robert Bistro last Sunday to try their unlimited steak frites special! They offer this deal on Sundays only ($39/pp) and it comes with unlimited steak + unlimited fries. There are a couple of other restaurants around that do this deal on Sundays too, but I believe they only do bottomless fries & not steak haha. Made a reservation on OpenTable same day and had no issues w/ getting a table for 2. We ended up getting an order of steak + frites each to start, as well as a separate order of escargot (I love escargot)! The escargot was okay. I wish it had just a little bit more flavor... tasted kind of grassy and flat, compared to when I last had this dish in France. For the steak, we did medium rare & medium. They come out w/ a plate of steak and the fries first & come around w/ plates of steak upon request, ~2-5 pieces at a time. Came with a black pepper sauce, which was tasty & paired well. We ended up asking for salt + pepper shakers and more sauce mid-meal because the steak lacked some seasoning & it helped immensely. Overall, our experience at Petit Robert Bistro was not bad. I was expecting the steak to be thin and not good in quality like other places, but I was completely wrong. The steak at Petit Robert Bistro was not only much better in quality, but also properly cooked, juicy, and well-seasoned. The $39 deal gets you a serving of baguette, a small plate of salad, and unlimited steak frites. I love food, so I also ordered escargot to start my meal, which was delicious. The restaurant itself was nice and cozy. My friends and I arrived at around 5pm without a reservation, and there were plenty of tables to seat us. We ultimately decided to sit at the bar instead, and the restaurant started to fill up in the next hour or so. Our bartender took great care of us and made sure we had an excellent experience. Such a cute French spot! Stopped here for drinks and Petit Robert did not disappoint. I got the Solara spritz to start and finished with the perroquet. Both drinks were tasty and refreshing. 4 of us came here for dinner during Restaurant Week. Their Restaurant Week menu was a nice sampler of their regular menu. For starters, my friends got the French Onion soup and I got the Soup of the Day. The onion soup was so rich and the sourdough bread soaking up the soup was perfect. The soup of the day was a creamy squash-based veggie soup, delicious as well. I got the mussels and my friends got fish, chicken, and steak. All entrees were delicious and left us wanting for more. The fries were mediocre though. We ended the meal with dessert. I got the creme brulee and it was phenomenal! The portion size was quite generous and it was a perfect blend of creamy custard, crispy burnt sugar, and fresh fruit. I thought the food here was excellent as well as the ambience. It's a very cute outdoor setting with only one bad table by a tree, which is slanted. The BLT was delicious. Been there many times, had dinner there for a birthday , 7 people. During the end of our dessert and coffee, the manager rudely came up to the table to get us to move. We reserved it and spent a lot of money. His actions were rude, embarrassing and unacceptable. Staff kept apologizing. 1 star Extremely disappointing experience - would not recommend I made a reservation at Petit Robert for two with standard indoor seating, specifically because it was a hot and humid night. When we arrived, the host informed us that the AC in the main dining room was broken and they could only seat us outside. I explained that outdoor seating wasn't acceptable due to the weather and that I had explicitly booked indoor seating. They seemed confused when I asked why we weren't notified in advance. Eventually, they agreed to seat us in the bar area, which was fine and appreciated at the time. But what really frustrated me is that I later found out they had called other guests to inform them ahead of time--just not us. This dinner was for my girlfriend's birthday, and had I known we'd be forced to sit outdoors, I would have made other plans. As for the food: I ordered the steak frites medium rare. It came out basically raw. I sent it back, and unbelievably, it came back undercooked again. At that point, they offered me a different dish, but the experience was already ruined. The one bright spot being the waiter who was very professional and understanding. Overall, just a completely avoidable mess of a night, both due to poor communication and lackluster food. With so many better options in Boston for this type of meal (like Eastern Standard, for example), I cannot recommend against Petit Robert more strongly. Oh, and they also cancelled my OpenTable reservation so that I couldn't leave a review there or get my points. The cherry on top. read more

We also ordered the poullet entree off their main menu that was served with a delicious sauce (not pictured). With less crowd, we got a lot of attention from our server and she was super nice. For brunch, this place provides many typical French dishes in a bistro however we were a little disappointed that they ran out of mussel for that day. This is a super beautiful restaurant famous for its outdoor seating area and my friends all recommended this spot to get brunch. It had been on my list of restaurants to try for a while and I ended up visiting a few months back for Dine Out Boston during the late summer with my roommate. We both chose three items off the prix-fixe menu: a foie gras dish that was served with a very interesting cherry glaze as an appetizer, a seared cod over safron risotto entree, and a vanilla creme brulee for dessert. The food was good but didn't really blow me away. The appetizer was probably my least favorite - the piece of foie gras on my plate was a bit difficult to cut through and the savory combination with the cherry glaze (that had more of a puree consistency) just wasn't it for me. When I mentioned this dish to a friend from France, she also said that foie gras is traditionally served as a pate with bread or crackers rather than cooked and served warm. I really enjoyed my entree - the fish was cooked perfectly and was very flaky, and it paired really well with the risotto. The dessert was also very tasty - I was stuffed at this point already but could never pass up a creme brulee. I just found it incredibly strange that my creme brulee serving size was noticeably smaller than my roommate's. It may not look that way in the photo, but the serving size and even just the way it was served didn't appear very consistent. Granted, I had mentioned to my server that I had a gluten allergy but she had reassured me that the creme brulee was gluten free, so I wasn't expecting any different between the desserts in the first place... read more

Unfortunately there are very few praises to be shared following my experience here July 25th. While my mocktail, the Sous Les Cocotiers, was refreshing and my entree, the Magret de Canard was delicious, my boyfriend had to send back his steak frites twice due to the steak being served raw both times. My second drink, the Spicy Siesta, was made entirely too strong. I couldn't even finish half of it. We were here to celebrate my birthday. My boyfriend had made a reservation for indoors as the weather was supposed to be hot and humid. Upon check in, we were informed the AC in the main dining room had broke and they would need to sit us outside as they couldn't accommodate us indoors. Given the weather and my sensitivity to extreme heat, he asked why he wasn't notified in advance of this issue. Stating that if he had known, we would have gone elsewhere. She said "idk" and shrugged her shoulders. She seemed confused and unsure what to do in the moment. Perhaps she was new? Luckily she found help from a server and we were able to be sat in the intimate bar area which still had AC. We appreciated the effort to fix this mix up. Later in the evening the manger let us know they had called guests to inform them of the AC issue, but forgot to call us. Following our meal, my boyfriend had asked that a special dessert be brought out for my birthday. They completely forgot. After speaking with the manager, they did comp our full meal without us having to ask. In my eyes, this did make up for a little bit of the trouble we experienced. Also, recognizing that the two poorly cooked steaks and our experience with the hostess was not his fault, we still tipped our lovely server as if our bill hadn't been comped. He provided great service throughout the night and was really doing his best. Despite this, we won't be back. read more

I saw this cute French cafe on Instagram a few times and was very eager to come! One of the quotes on their menu ("mangez bien, riez souvent, aimez beaucoup") made me really smile, and fortunately, my meal here did not disappoint! My friends and I had a reservation for 12:30 on a Saturday - they were super busy at the time, and it took us around 5-10 min to get our table, so definitely plan ahead if you're coming for peak brunch hours. We ordered a pain au chocolat, the eggs benedict, a croque madame, and the bourguignon au fromage. Everything was so tasty! My favourite was the bourguignon - the beef super tender and juicy with just a fantastic savoury sauce. Croque madame was also a highlight - yummy ham and cheese inside perfectly toasted bread. Also, the salads with every dish were really tasty, with a light, sweetish dressing, which topped off a really great meal. For drinks I had the mise a vert cocktail since I was intrigued by the matcha flavour in the description - unfortunately fell a bit flat, since I didn't find the combo of matcha, gin, and lemon to work very well. Overall, a great meal! Price point somewhat higher than I expected, but I sometimes just figure it's the 'brunch' premium haha. My only complaint was just that the service was a little lacking, probably because of how busy they were; it just took a while to get anyone's attention (to get seated, to order, to ask for napkins or the bill, etc.) which was a little suboptimal. Went to Petit Robert Bistro last night for dinner and drinks with friends. We were seated outside at first and eventually they moved us inside as soon as a table opened up, which was very accommodating of them. However, there was a mix up with our drinks after moving indoors and the waiter didn't come back to take our order for another 10-12 minutes. Finally we placed our orders. I'll start with the drinks. I got the vin chaud which was perfect for a cold autumn night: not too hot and it came with a cinnamon stick. After dinner I got the bleu elegance and the cappuccino martini. The bleu elegance was refreshing and delicious, the cappuccino martini good but it's basically an espresso martini with baileys: a bit too creamy for my liking. For an appetizer I got the French onion soup which was delicious, savory, and everything you'd expect. For dinner I got the beef bourguignon which came with a side of mashed potatoes. It was very good but not amazing and for $39 I expected to be wowed. They also give you a small, warm baguette and butter for the table which was quite good. Had not been in years to this neighbourhood favorite. Sadly, so very disappointing. The place was crowded, both indoors and especially outdoors. A beet sald with pickled peaches was overwhelmed with vinegar ( removed from the bill ). The calves liver ( one of my favorite items and often hard to find here ) was so unappealing...I made it through half of the portion...2 very different looking thin slices ( different colors ) and topped ,with soggy bacon and drownned in excessive pan sauce. Nobody checked on us until after the plates were cleared. My friend's NY strip had zero flavor or any hint of seasoning...( I tried it as well... nothing ). The overall expereince was not good....best feature was the kind staff overall and especially the host and his assistant. I question whether the small kitchen is suited to such a large dining crowd. read more

Steak frites: would not recommend. The steak seemed like maybe it was cooked via sous vide and just barely seared, so the flavor was really lacking. Also since the fat wasn't rendered, the texture was frankly unpleasant. Fries were ok. Risotto: pretty good, large portion, cheesy and creamy with a good amount of vegetables throughout. Not the best risotto I've ever had but I did enjoy it. The complimentary baguette came warm and came with a side of butter. I wish the butter had been salted (or more salted than it was). I wanted to like this place but the quality of the food let me down a little. The atmosphere of the outdoor seating was definitely nice and the staff were friendly and accommodating. read more

A dear friend brought me here and I had no time to go over previous reviews, which Im glad for (this time around) since I rarely dine at establishments with less than 4 avg stars these days (bc my hectic schedule doesnt allow for much dining so must have some process of elimination) Ill first state that I did not choose my dish. I sensed that this was the type of place where the servers truly knew their dishes, so I asked him to "surprise me" I was so caught up in the rich dialogue amongst my friends who were hosting that I didn't notice the steaming baguette sitting there at first with homemade butter. My friend mentioned how much she adores good bread, so I took a bite, though I tend to hold out for the real deal part of the meal. I might have unintentionally consumed two halves with at least 2/3 portion of that butter. Im not saying it was Bergamot (of somerville. RIP) level butter. Im just saying I wasn't expecting anything, so steamy bread that melted in my mouth as first thing I consumed that day at 12:15 was delicious. The "surprise" was some dish that included crusty sliced bread with ham, cheese, and egg over easy on top melded together. There were fries (that appeared like a higher class version of McDs fries) on the side, which I used to dip into my egg yolk. And a fresh mixed green salad already tossed with a light vinaigrette. My friend ordered the Benedict and the host ordered a dish I cant seem to identify. Maybe an omelette of sorts. The coffee is said to be good. My mint tea was okay. Not as good as Cafe Bonjour in Downtown Crossing (using real mint leaves) but who has time for that kinda thing these days one might argue. I did appreciate the determination of our server who eventually found "hot sauce" for us despite a few failed attempts by others (in bringing that bastard tabasco), but my pleasure might be more due to his handsome bearded smile. I have no price (worth the food) assessments since my host generously paid for our meal, but Id consider coming back for the service alone and trying other signature dishes. It was packed when we arrived but emptied out a little by the time we were done and I can imagine a quaint date night on a warmer day outside under the moon or light pollution.
