We also spent an hour at the King Tut exhibit across the street! This restaurant/bar always seems packed. And, with reservations for 645pm (highly recommend) the bar was quite busy. The buzz from this high-end cocktail bar is exactly what you want on a Friday evening; From girlfriends sipping their wine to couples laughing and swirling their cocktails, Moon Bar is for the classy and sexy. Abby our server is excellent! A mixologist who knows all the cocktails and can recommend based on your preference. I tried one of their new cocktails with bourbon and did not care for it. Abby made me my mezcal drink that I have ordered before...its the 305 cowboy, an extremely popular drink. A must try for sure! Note: Some bartenders make you feel guilty for saying something about a drink you ordered and did not like. But, here at Moon Bar, Abby was so gracious to make me something that I will enjoy. Hats off to her:) Food: Since it was restaurant week we just shared everything. For starters we ordered the Tuna Tartare that was excellent. Then, we had Piri-Piri Chicken Thighs that were also good but quite spicy. For dessert, we shared the Caribbean Tiramisu, which was great. It was a tough choice between this and the Guava Cheesecake. We were so full that we ended up bringing home leftovers. Oh, I also forgot to mention we always order their Curry Fries - a must try when coming here Trust Me. The menu is small, with cold stuff, hot stuff and sweet stuff. The cocktails are split between creative drinks and OG classics. We tried the spiced watermelon, fried sweet plantains and smoked pork ribs, along with some beers and cocktails. The spiced watermelon had a big kick, which made it a little too much for me. The spot itself is cute and has a nice vibe, but overall, I wasn't super impressed with the food. It was a decent experience but it wouldn't be my first choice to return to if I was in Boston. read more

What an amazing time we had a moon bar! The ambience was perfect for a girls night out and great wall art. All the drinks we got were delicious which I feel like is rare for a bar. The great palm and golden colada were my favorite. They were both sweet with a tangy aftertaste. The roasted cauliflower was very flavorful. It was heavy on the sauce which was great and loved the crunch of the cashews. The tandoori chicken was my favorite. It was very juicy and tender chicken marinated well. As Mooncusser's sibling restaurant, the food quality at Moon Bar doesn't disappoint. Their dishes are definitely more playful and adventurous. For their Restaurant Week menu, you receive an appetizer, entree and dessert for $55 - such an amazing deal. Favorites were definitely their Big Green Salad, Spiced Chicken & Key Lime Semifreddo. Moon Bar is a true gem! The staff was seriously amazing from the moment we walked in. Everyone we interacted with throughout our time there was kind, accommodating, and took time to explain/recommend things. Special thank you to Jake (the bartender) and the hostesses!! The layout is different than that of a typical restaurant; it's a large bar with lots of bar seating at the center, with smaller bar seating type tables facing the windows surrounding. There was also a coat check and a small standing area where we ordered drinks while waiting for seats to open up. The hosts even seat you at the bar, and there's a fun social vibe to the whole place. Once we got to the bar, the food, drinks, and service were incredible all around. My favorite dish was the chicken things (They were on the spicy side but delicious!) The banana leaf dish and beef patty were also standouts. And then, if you're sharing, the marinated halibut and the green mango salad were a great choice. For cocktails, Jake did an incredible job. My go-to is a Bees-Knees, which was awesome, as were all of the other drinks he recommended! Some other favs from the night were the "Corpse Reviver #2", the "Rome with a View", and a drink that I can't remember, but it was pink and made with Suyo Pisco. (See pictured.) I know this is a long review, but it was all so good that we came back twice on the same night! When visiting again, we will definitely be back. This was one of my favorite finds of all time. Decided to visit Moon Bar to try out their restaurant week menu. I'm already a big fan of Mooncusser but I expected their cheaper menu items to be lacking but was pleasantly surprised by the amount of care put into each dish! The sauces came with a playful amount of heat that dances on your tongue but can still be enjoyed by people with a low spice tolerance. Service was excellent as our server was funny and beaming! We went to Moon Bar for dinner before a theater performance in the South End. Having dined at Mooncusser, we were very excited to try its highly-acclaimed tapas/bar location on the first floor. Top-line takeaway is Moon Bar is an excellent casual version of Mooncusser's upscale dining experience. The food and drinks are inventive, fresh, and thoughtfully curated. However, there were a few cons to our dining experience. First, the selection of dishes when we went were of higher than average spicy-ness. This wasn't entirely clear from the menu descriptions and as someone who doesn't love spicy foods, this definitely impacted the eating experience. Second, the window bar seats were oddly and uncomfortably structured -- the foot rests were way too far down while the window ledge was way too far up...definitely not ergonomic. It would also have been nice to have a hook or something to put bags. However, these certainly don't take away from the high caliber of Moon Bar's cuisine and we'll certainly consider returning in the future! Food: 1. Tuna escabeche (4.5/5) 2. The bar tender was very friendly and consistently checked up on us, making sure we enjoying enjoying everything and have everything we need. The food here was very delicious, especially the tandoori chicken. It was tender, juicy, and had amazing flavor. The sea bass was spicy but so flavorful. Wrapping the seaman's with the roti and topping it off with samba and "indian chex mix" created a unique but very flavorful taste. The upside down pineapple cake was one of the best desserts I have had. The cake was perfectly sweet and balanced amazingly with the tanginess of the pineapple. After a 3 hour flight delay, there weren't a lot of options left, but I had my eyes set on Moon Bar anyway, and they were open until 10:30pm on a weekday. The original plan was actually for Mooncusser, their sister restaurant that's more formal, but I missed that cutoff with my 9pm arrival in the city. Drinks: - Oh Diane: trakal, coconut and turmeric spirit, carrot - it's quite orange, but it doesn't taste too vegetal. It's really well balanced with the lemongrass, wasabi, and chili oil - Omotenashi: rye, sake, pear, mushroom, coffee coconut foam. The cold foam is like a dessert, but then the drink underneath is a bit savory and more complex - very unique. The flavors all come together amazingly Food: - Tuna crudo: with pineapple, cucumber, shiso, habanero oil - light and refreshing, with mini tortillas on top for crunch - Banana leaf wrapped black bass with pineapple sambal, roti. This had a good cook. It's best eaten with a bite of roti wrapping some fish, sambal, and the crunch mix My bartender / server was great - really friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Definitely recommend this place if you like interesting flavors. Also loved the whole classy tropical vibe of the bar with the smell of spices in the air. The Oh Diane shocked me since it was not what I was expecting and the ingredients worked so beautifully together. Golden Colada was also dangerously delicious, however it is a less daring drink compared to the Oh Diane if you aren't feeling adventurous to try their creative drinks. The Junglebird was refreshing and complimented well the fried sweet plantains and queso tapas. I wish there were more queso pieces because I could eat that and the banana ketchup all day. Both bartenders were very friendly, knowledgeable, and skilled in their craft. Food and drinks came out quick but we also went during a slow time so it might be different during a busier time. In addition to great vibes, be prepared for fantastic Southeast Asian inspired cocktails and food. I'm glad we had reservations because it was quite busy Saturday night. You can reserve for counter seating or bar seating. With counter seating, the stools face a window nook and you'll have more privacy, but I recommend bar seating to fully experience the lively energy of this vibrant cocktail bar. Plus, the bartenders are very friendly. The three cocktails we ordered were some of the tastiest cocktails we've had in Boston. Sweet, creative, and strong - their drinks are delicious and definitely worth coming for. - Cover Girl (Hamilton rum, Cognac, Jamaican jerk butternut squash, angostura amaro, almond): Refreshing and loved the hint of almond! - Junglebird (Appleton Jamaican rum, pineapple, Campari, lime): Smooth, sweet and tangy. - Old Cuban (Aged rum, lime, mint, Cinzano prosecco): The prosecco added a fantastic crispness and lightness. It's hard to find a cocktail bar that has not only great drinks, but impressive food as well. And Moon Bar does it all. We ordered: - Mahi Mahi Ceviche: The fish, coconut masala and sweet potatoes were deliciously fresh and flavorful. Our only gripe is that the portion is slightly small for $18. - Smoked Pork Ribs: The meat was so soft, tender, and succulent it literally fell off the bone. Dressed with mango chutney, this dish was the perfect combination of sweet and savory. My favorite dish of the night! - Banana Leaf Wrapped Black Bass: We loved wrapping the flakey, delicate fish into the roti. Fun concept and awesome flavor profile. - Yucca Fries: This was the only dish that I didn't love. The aji amarillo aioli tasted a bit too "fishy" for me, and I wish the yucca fries were crispier/more golden. My husband loved it though, so those who are fond of strong fish flavors may enjoy this. We also tried both desserts, the banana ice cream with wafers and the coconut rice pudding with hibiscus sorbet. After being so impressed by Mooncusser earlier this year I finally got around to trying their more casual outpost on the first floor and it did not disappoint! The menu is full of fresh, bright flavors with an emphasis on really well-prepared fish dishes. The halibut and tuna were stars of the meal in this regard with the perfect balance of acid and spice. First time here and won't be the last. Great drinks and food, cool ambiance, excellent service. Prices are what you'd expect for a small plate cocktail bar in Boston. For drinks, my wife and I shared the Moon Taxi, Mono Stereo, and Oh Diane, all of which were great. I would get any of them again, but we were told that the menu changes on a regular basis, so we won't get too attached. The bartender (whose name I didn't catch and I feel badly) was the guy who creates the cocktail menu so of course he was very knowledgable. When he recommended the Oh Diane, he explained the process of how he created the drink and I love when people get excited about something they're passionate about. He was also really friendly and seemed to know many other customers who came in after us. Food was almost perfect. The marinated halibut with tomatillo, avocado, and served with tostones was great was really nice. Fried sweet plantains are hard to mess up. These were as expected and the crema they were served with was a great tangy pairing to balance the sweetness of the plantains. The lamb burger was slightly disappointing. Not sure what the slowdown was with assembly, but the lamb was lukewarm by the time it got to us, it wasn't particularly flavorful, and the meat wasn't as tender as you'd hope for being medium rare (the correct default doneness). Bun was ok. The pickled veggies and chutney were nice. Overall, really nice experience. Would skip the lamb burger but would happily get any of the other food and drinks we got this time. read more

Back again to reiterate how much I love this place. The manager, Jake, actually recognized my name from the reservation and gave me and my boyfriend incredible service. It's such a great community. We got more food this time too! Of course I got the halibut ceviche again but we also got Dal Palak, which is a curry-like stew with lentils, and the beef empanada! The Dal Palak comes with shrimp too. It was a perfect balance between a little bit sweet, little spicy, soo much umami, and the texture was silky and not too grainy, considering it's made with lentils. The empanada was super buttery and flakey and the meat inside was perfection. I love it here so much and I'll be back again soon! Not only are the cocktails great, the ambiance is fun and unserious (employees wear Hawaiian shirts and there is pink neon signage adorning the walls), perfect for a date night or meet up. We've enjoyed every cold menu item, with favorites being the mahi mahi ceviche and tuna. Tandoori chicken is killer- the spices are delicious, and with a warm kick of heat! Lamb burger seasoning was a bit of a miss for our party and the pickled veg didn't complement the spice profile well, though the meat itself was cooked nicely. The chickpea fries and green sauce were yummy, albeit a bit pasty. Their sister restaurant located upstairs, Mooncusser, also features more raw seafood menu items, but is a much more formal dining experience. Why I'll go back: Outstanding cocktails and truly unique shareable dishes. Tony's Tip: Definitely make a reservation. They do run a waitlist, but it could take an hour or more on the weekend. You HAVE to order: the yellowfin tuna was the standout of the night The wife and I decided to wing it last night (Saturday) and walk over to Moonbar to try what looked like an inventive menu at a spot already known for its cocktail menu. It was cold and on the verge of drizzling, so even though it's a small place, we thought we could sneak in. Well, we roll up around 7:00 p.m. and there's not a seat in the entire place! One of the hostesses was very accommodating, though, setting us up at the walk-in/stand-up counter near the doorway facing the window along Columbus Ave. and then putting us on the wait list for bar seating, noting it might be after 8:00 until something opens up. Just as we're debating whether to have one drink and bolt, two seats open up at the bar and she pops back over to us for the upgrade to First Class! With what looks like total capacity of about 40 people and a decent music backdrop, Moonbar has great energy and reminded us a lot of haley.henry, the highly acclaimed and cozy wine bar in Downtown Crossing. What makes Moonbar a little different is the liquor license - thus the excellent array of cocktails - and a fully functioning kitchen that can offer a broader selection of dishes. I liked both of my drinks, but my wife thinks she might finally have found her go-to margarita! She went with a blanco tequila, and the marg mix had a touch of pineapple, all of which combined for a concoction that is less sweet than your typical 'rita. Nice to have finally checked that box! We ordered the yellowfin tuna, green mango salad, shrimp a la plancha, and the coconut rice putting. All were great, but we really enjoyed that first dish, which was a sashimi-like presentation spiced up just enough to have a kick but not so much that you couldn't enjoy the combination of flavors working together. All three non-desserts definitely had Southeast Asian and Caribbean influences, but I wouldn't characterize anything we ate as "spicy." As for dessert, let's just say I am not a fan of rice putting, but my wife had trouble fighting me off for a dish she thought she'd have all to herself. Seeing as this will only be the fourth review in the seven months Moonbar has been open, it seems this little Back Bay/Bay Village neighborhood gem is still flying under the radar. You wouldn't know it from the party going on inside though. Best of luck to the Mooncusser team with this latest iteration in its downstairs space. Big Green Salad (4/4): I usually treat salads as a mandatory vegetable to round out the meal. In other words, this plate had a steep climb to #1 but managed to ascend. This salad had a great balance of flavors, textures, and caused the first fork fight of the evening (with me winning the last bite!) Patty (3.5/4): The flaky crust, spiced beef, and gracious extra patty were enough to convince me. My wife and I came in last night around 9pm and was quickly escorted to two seats at the bar. The ambience here was lovely. We ordered two drinks and a dessert as a night cap to our evening. The dessert was delightful and the cocktail and whiskey selection was nice. However there was something very off-putting with our experience and that unfortunately would be the service. While I appreciate the initial greeting gesture, the servers we were interacting with did not appear as if they wanted to be there. They were giving off a vibe that made us feel somewhat unwelcomed and made my wife feel uncomfortable when she wanted to request for things from the bar or the kitchen. When the check came, we found on the tab a kitchen appreciation fee of 3%. Personally, we believe these kinds of fees need to be eliminated. Nevertheless we paid the bill on full plus left a generous tip of 20%. When we were saying our goodbyes to the servers and asked if they would mind retrieving one of our personal belongings that was accidentally left at the bar, one of the servers, while looking at the signed receipt from our tab, made a snarky comment and said "yes we do mind" while crumbling up the signed receipt in his hand. Was it a tasteless joke? I was completely taken back by this and offended. I feel this kind of service is unacceptable and behavior is absolutely unwarranted. If you are coming here for food and drinks, I hope these people are genuinely greeting you with a smile.
