The Peruvian scallops were also memorable. We also ordered the clam chowder which was good but not great. Main: 5/5 We ordered the koshikhari rice which was as good as advertised. The perfect comfort food with a buttery sauce and a medley of fish. Dessert: 7 /5 Look no further than the key lime pie. I'm not a key lime pie guy but this was too good. I have had fishing with dynamite on my list for a while and we somehow got reservations on a holiday weekend! This is a small and cozy restaurant so you need reservations because they are popular. The menu has lots of curated seafood options and even had holiday food specials. My husband ordered one of the specials, the fwd's classic cioppino which had a light tomato broth with cous cous and a variety of shellfish. The dish also came with two crostinis with what tasted like a chipotle aioli. This dish was solid, and he paired it with oysters from the raw bar which were peak freshness and had an exceptional horseradish amongst the sides. I opted for their blue crab seafood roll which I have never seen before. The blue crab portion is generous and the flavor really pairs well with its buttery roll. For the side, I opted to have the ceasar salad instead of the fries, and the lettuce was very crisp but I thought it had a bit too much salad dressing for my taste. The highlight dish was my starter, the Japanese hamachi sashimi. This hamachi came out in an apple ponzu sauce and had a thin jalapeño for crunch and heat. Pro-tip: get the SAFFRON AIOLI for your shrimp, crab cake or whatever, it's a GAMECHANGER. Found my new favorite seafood spot and it's a cute little restaurant right by the beach! Make reservations because this place has very little seating and is popular (will be sad when they lose their outdoor seating). Super friendly and fast service, excellent seafood options on the menu, and the dessert is just *chef's kiss* I tried all their oysters and my favorite was the Princess Delight (only a little briney), followed by the Sea Cup (medium briney) and Silver Fox (medium briney). The Peruvian scallops were deliciously tangy with a citrus bite. The crab cake was chock full of crab and so yummy with the dill sauce (and I don't even like dill!). Began our meal with some clam chowder soup and this was the only item that is NOT recommended. It wasn't thick enough, and there wasn't much substance in it. It was more like a broth. Continued on to raw oysters, ray clams, and raw scallops. The clams and scallops were decent, and I had to try them because they rarely on any menu, but they weren't as good as the oysters (which were outstanding). The crab cake, grilled octopus, and koshihikari rice were all spectacular. The crab cake had a crispy crust that made it very tasty. The grilled octopus was very flavorful. The koshihikari brought this rating to a 5 star rating-- it has a risotto texture to it and very palatable. Finished the meal with a key lime pie. He guides you through the menu and made great recommendations. I would give this place 10 stars if I could!!! My girlfriend and I have been meaning to try this place for months, given our love of seafood. It's hard to get seated as a walk-in, as indoor space is limited, so we made an advance reservation this time around. The establishment is smaller and cozy. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess and had the pleasure of being served by Alex, who was beyond knowledgeable and lovely! We started with a tequila cocktail, the Agua Vida. This was a veryyyy strong tequila drink served up, if that's your thing. We switched over to gin after that, and had a couple of the "L-Word" cocktails. My girlfriend is a gin connoisseur, and she deemed it the best gin cocktail she's ever had. Seriously, it was that good. For food, we started with the grilled octopus. It was perfectly cooked - crispy on the edges but still soft on the inside. It came with shishito peppers, potatoes, arugula, and this delicious spicy mayo sauce. The spicy mayo was such a good and creative addition. It took the flavor of the fish to a whole new level! We continued on with an assortment of seafood. I love how you can order as much or as little of something as you want here. We had gotten 6 oysters, 4 shrimp cocktail, and two scallops. We then decided we wanted just two more scallops and two more of a certain type of oyster, and were able to order just that. No minimums! The seafood was all to-die for. The shrimp cocktail was marinated in juices and dill. The scallop needed nothing else on top of it, as it came marinated and with a tiny slice of grapefruit on top. It just worked so well. The oysters and the accompaniments were unreal. I'm seriously in love with the ponzu sauce provided. So innovative. At this point, we had taken up a little too much time at the table with all of our eating, drinking, and chatting. The next reservation was about to come in, and the staff diplomatically asked us if we would mind moving to the bar, and then we could "stay forever!" No problems for us there, as the bar area is adorable and ran by the best bartender ever, Torin. You'll be hard pressed to find someone as cool and knowledgeable of libations as him! Drink wise, we finished up the dinner with another cocktail, the Mulholland Drive (a whiskey cocktail) for me, and the Everything Nice (a gin cocktail) for my friend. The fish portions were insane. I've been to places with a $45 crab or lobster roll, and you get a sliver of fish. Not this place. The price was completely fair and justified for the amount of crab in that roll. The bread was literal perfection. Crisped on the edges but chewy and soft in the middle. I couldn't stop eating the fries. Crisped to perfection with a unique seasoning. I asked for a side of the malt vinegar mayo, and I'm so glad I did. Addicting. This restaurant has poor management and communication skills. We called ahead of time in the afternoon and asked to move our reservation from 6:15pm to 6:30pm. The hostess, Bonnie, confirmed the change and verified that we would have a 15 min grace period until 6:45pm. She notified us that this would shorten our dining time, which we were fine with. At 6:30pm, we called to let them know that we would be there at exactly 6:45pm. It turns out they gave our table away. Instead of admitting their fault, they insisted that we were the ones who did not show up on time. Keep in mind, we called at 6:30PM but they had already given away our table. This means, they gave it away before our 15 min grace period. Not only did they fail to honor the 15 min grace period, they also refused to provide any accommodations. They would not allow us to walk in because they were fully booked. This is a clear indication of poor communication amongst staff, handling of customers, and management on the part of the restaurant. We drove an hour and half, wanting to try this restaurant, but I'll never return due to the terrible customer service. read more

We'd always wanted to stop by FWD pre-COVID but never got around to it. Finally had the opportunity when we decided to venture out of our COVID-19 bubble. When we went, it was all outdoor seating. They took up what may have been parking spots out front to set up a cute little al fresco dining area. Just be aware that there is almost no quarter from the sun for most of the tables. Hubby sat next to a planter so he got a little bit of shade but I had to drink my cocktails in a hurry because it was getting very warm, very fast (served up). That all being said, the food was phenomenal. We ended up spending more than we expected to but it was 100% worth it. And we were STUFFED. We'd already decided to start with the spot prawns, 12 oysters, 6 clams, 6 pc shrimp cocktail, and 6 scallops but I saw the squash rolls get dropped off at the table next to us and my carb-starved brain ordered them last minute. All the seafood was fresh and the toppings provided were perfect pairings. For entrees, we got the koshihikari rice and the coriander crusted tuna (hubby's pick). I wasn't expecting very much from the tuna because I mean who hasn't done a seared tuna dish? But I was quite surprised. Though the tuna was great, the accompanying farro was a revelation of flavors. My fiancé and I spontaneously went to Manhattan Beach for seafood and we came across Fishing with Dynamite. They happily checked in a couple of walk-ins and we were excited. We were seated in the outdoor area and our waiter Sal was very approachable. Within a few minutes more ppl started arriving and we figured we arrived just in time given it was the lunch rush and reservations were highly recommended. Our waiter Sal was so approachable and polite. We ordered a variety of oysters, ceviche, clam chowder, shrimp tacos, and a blue crab roll. The food came out in courses and was so fresh. The staff were so kind and excellent. We didn't finish all the food we ordered so we took it home so we can enjoy the rest on the couch. I definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone looking to eat seafood or if you're in the area and unsure where to go. We love this place and we are lucky it's in the neighborhood. We went here last Friday night and enjoyed making our own seafood tray with shrimp, scallops and oysters. When I walked up to the receptionist on a brisk and beautiful Saturday night in August, I was told only outside dining was available, which means a table on the sidewalk. Eating on a beautiful street Manhattan Beach only adds to the ambience of the popular Southern California venue. The server Sophie was helpful and obviously loved her job. She offered recommendations, said mix and match was encouraged, offering her enthusiastic opinions I ordered the best bowl of New England Clam Chowder I have ever eaten and one taco of rockfish, one of Mexican white shrimp. Back in California spending some time in LA, Pismo and Napa. On the way up from LA, stopped in at FWD by a friend who gave my favorite kind of review: "You HAVE to go there!" So we did. In addition to that review - the ratings on Yelp would have gotten me here - over a thousand reviews at 4.5 stars - that many people can't be wrong. And they weren't! We arrived, reservation in hand, right as they opened and were quickly seated at a window table. I was surprised that a place this highly reviewed was not larger but I'm sure a ton of factors went into that choice. We enjoyed two items which we shared: The first was the Coriander Crusted Bluefin Tuna with an Orzo accompaniment that balanced it perfectly. It was simply a wonderful combination of flavors and the tuna was melt in your mouth tender. This is a dish you eat slowly. And then our second "course" came. I say "course" because our server very thoughtfully served the first dish on its own so it would not be overpowered by the flavors of the second one: the Koshihikari Rice Plate - and he was right. It too was an amazing compilation of flavors that would have competed too much with the tuna. All in all a wonderful meal. I can only imagine what everything else on the menu tastes like! We had the oysters to start (delicious), hamachi sashimi (I've been craving this since we left), spicy octopus (this was a little spicy for me, but my bf loved it), halibut, and sea bass. Excellent service and food. Every dish is a work of art. We had the Hamachi sashimi appetizer, crab cakes, koshihikari rice and seared scallops. All of them were delicious but the sashimi was by far the best! The waiter was nice enough to offer us a free key lime pie for dessert. I'm not a fan of lime or dessert but I believe it one of their most popular desserts. The interior of the restaurant is pretty small but they have ample space in the makeshift outdoor patio that has stayed after the pandemic. Looking forward to returning when I am in the area again. They put some seasoning on it that makes it taste so good and they have 2 types of dipping sauce. Omg I'm salivating thinking about it now. Halibut: we got the halibut with a peach vinegarette salad and it was absolutely delicious. The halibut was perfectly good and the sourness is the dressing plus the peaches really complimented each other. Soo soo good. Highly recommend. My hubby got the seafood risotto. OMG most delicious. It's super creamy and full of seafood bits. It doesn't look like a lot but it's very filling. Get this one too! It doesn't disappoint. For dessert we got the key lime pie. It was eh. We were asked about allergies and we received a walk through of the entire menu. Simply outstanding seafood highlighted by the best oysters, littleneck clams, mussels and lobster I've had since Neptune Oyster in Boston. Each shellfish was incredibly fresh and flavorful on their own, accented wonderfully by the accompanying saffron aioli, mignonette and superb cocktail sauce. This visit, I got to try some Pirates Bay, Cotuit and Misty Point Oysters all with their unique flavor profiles...some delightfully briny, others with clean celery notes.
