There were only 3 other tables there, yet the service wasn't great. The server couldn't answer basic questions about the menu items. We put in the order, she came back verifying one of the items... but then my meal came out and my companions did not. She asked again what her order was...20 minutes later my meal was cold and hers finally arrived. Seemed like it wasn't put in at all. The manager had come by at the beginning. He was nice. I told him before my guest arrived that it was her birthday and he said he would quietly send over a dessert when he saw we were done. Needless to say, it never arrived. Crispy calamari, brown butter cinnamon roll, and crispy chicken bites were all served COLD so off to a bad start already... Entrees were served hot thankfully. I liked my beer battered fish & chips but the batter kept falling apart. Bf liked his burger but the steak was mid. Service was nice but not super attentive imo. Okay, I had no idea they had a bottomless mimosas option here, I will definitely be coming back for that at some point, haha. Great ambiance, delicious food, and fast service, plus live music (only Thursday nights & Sundays for brunch), Zinc @ Shade in Manhattan Beach has it all! A five-star experience all around, I was pleasantly surprised from our friendly server (Jenna?) to Hugo, who playing live music while we were there. We didn't mention it, but it was actually a birthday brunch and it felt so perfect! I can't wait to come back here again and try the white pizza (apparently it's very popular), as well as many of the other delicious items they offer. The staff here is so amazing! They were so friendly and made sure we were enjoying our time (without being overbearing). We came for happy hour and had no regrets. It's just a good deal for a majority of the plates we got. We got the spicy tuna, the empanadas, the grilled pear and burrata, and the filet bites. We got the spicy tuna because everyone else around was. It was pretty average, I would say maybe skip it and get another app. The empanadas came out hot! The chicken was seasoned perfectly and the portion of bread to meat was . The pear and burrata was refreshing and the perfect medium in between the filet bites and the empanadas. The filet bites were our favorite. We couldn't believe this was on the happy hour and if we didn't have the tuna, we would have ordered another! As much as I liked the vibes here and sitting in front of a fire, the food we had was surprisingly mid and rather overpriced for the quality and taste. We came for DineLA and only one other table was occupied - at dinnertime on a summer Friday. :( Yes, it's a hotel restaurant, but I checked reviews beforehand and had high hopes. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the meal. We tried the Steak Frites, Shrimp & Grits, and Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice - all pretty, but just did not taste as good as it should have. This was for DineLA, but these items are also on their regular menu. The sorbet and the NY cheesecake, though, were highlights. I would come back just to enjoy the sorbet in front of a fire. My girls and I went here for brunch and it was really good! I was able to get a reservation for 8 and we were sat right away. The service was great and the waiters constantly would check on us and make sure we were okay :) The food overall was excellent- my steak was perfectly medium rare and the eggs were not overcooked. Great ambiance with covered patio and very dog friendly. They even brought some water for my pup without being asked. That was very appreciated! It's a great spot for a casual Sunday afternoon brunch or snack, which is what we did while walking the dog. The Brussels Sprouts and Goat Cheese pizza was kind of bland. Nothing too special. The fries were hot and fresh which was good. The front desk, runners and bussers were great. Our server was friendly, yet he was also the bartender and taking care of a large party inside. As a result, we were forgotten about and there were long stretches of time where nobody checked on us. We had to hunt him down to pay the bill. This isn't his fault per se, but management shouldn't have had him take our table on the far end of the patio if he was taking care of a large party inside. read more

We sat on the terrace for dinner in January. They had lots of heating laps that kept everyone warm. The service was excellent and attentive. The wait time for the food was just right. Great and attentive service. We had our dog, and she was welcomed. There were 2 other dogs on the terrace. Very pet-friendly. The food was excellent. We were here for Dina Around LA event and we were warmly welcomed by the restaurant's team. The outdoor terrace is very nice and had great lighting--not too much sun but just right amount of light--perfect for brunch. You also get a nice ocean breeze. We had some appetizers--crispy calamari and Margherita pizza. Pizza had really good fresh tasting sauce and mozzarella cheese, while the calamari had that perfect crisp and flavor. read more

Christmas Eve dinner definitely lacking in quality for the price. For 95$, you get a bread roll, amuse bouche (best thing - prawns), a salad, and a main. The biggest letdown was the prime rib. Definitely overcooked when called "medium" (pictured). For those who have had prime rib, can imagine how over cooked this is. It was hard. Usually, you cut the middle of the roast for patrons who want more rarer cuts and the outside of the roast for more well done. But the manager said all the cuts are the same "medium." Which makes me wonder if these were cut from the roast fresh for patrons. I get that it's a holiday dinner, but for a 95$ asking price, the expectation is higher and at least, patrons should be able to ask for a less well done cut. read more

I checked in the Shade Hotel Manhattan Beach at night. I ate alone at Zinc in the hotel 1F for dinner. The man at the bar was very pleasant service. I couldn't drink, so I ordered a slice of lemon in the hot water. And I ordered Crispy Skin Norweigan Salmon. There was a risotto under the crispy grilled salmon w skin, which was a little thick, but the taste was mild and easy to eat. This dish was well served with the hot lemon water I ordered. Really delightful place to sit outside and have brunch on a nice day. It can get very hot on the "Metlox plaza" sitting area, so keep that in mind. Not the least expensive brunch around but quite tasty. The avocado toast comes with two over easy eggs which was very nice. My frittata was OK, nothing special, but the fruit that came with it was nice. Our waitress was doing her best to handle a multitude of tables. We appreciated her hard work. We came on a day when they were doing a special at brunch, where, and magician came around and did magic right at your table. That was definitely worth every penny of the expensive brunch. There's no free parking anywhere, but your best option is to park in the underground structure. TL/dr: pretty fancy and pricey brunch that's basically worth it read more

This past holiday season, my wife and I decided that instead of cooking on Christmas, we would do a dine out. We got an email from Shade/Zinc saying that there were doing a dinner and we thought that would be fun! We're locals and have been there for happy hour and the food (and drinks) were always pretty good. When we made a reservation, we asked to be inside since it was a bit cold that day and it gets chilly and damp in MB at night. When we got there, the guy at the front started to seat us outside. Luckily, the manager was there and changed things for us back to the inside. When we sat down, the wait staff we had was a bit rushed (but at least nice). The menu was $95 for 3 courses (bread, salad, main and dessert). We ordered drinks (pretty good) and then had to wait a bit to order. When we were sitting there with our drinks, we noticed that it was pretty cold inside. People were all wearing jackets - including us. Why? Both entry doors were propped open creating a nice cold breeze. We asked the waitstaff to please consider closing at least one of the doors and they said they would "try". Sigh. Next, the food came out. Bread was meh and the salad was miniscule. When the mains came, at that point I asked for another cocktail. My wife had the polenta (didn't finish) and I had one of the meat dishes. Pretty unforgettable and a bit tough (I can't even remember what it was lol). once we finished the main, the wait person came back and said my cocktail was on the way. I had them cancel it since it was so late in arriving. For dessert I has the cake popsicles (3 tiny ones). The dessert reminded us of what we could get at Peet's Coffee. Sigh. At this point, they finally closed the entry doors, nearly 90 minutes later. Maybe the baby in a carriage bundled up in blankets in the middle of the dining area got it done. It was a very funny Christmas experience. We laughed quite a bit on the way home. read more

Came by earlier today for Memorial Day brunch and while the food was consistently tasty, the service left much to be desired. To begin, my family and I waited long enough for someone to come by our table after seating that I had to go up to the maitre'd to ask for a server. Our waitress finally came to warmly greet us, but that's where the positives end. She was otherwise largely absent for the rest of our meal and my wife and I had to ask other waitstaff to help us with clearing the table, the check, take-away boxes, etc. On top of that, I mentioned a Yelp check-in offer for a complimentary guacamole appetizer early on in the meal only to have our waitress completely forgot to ask her manager about it until after we had finished all of our dishes... On the bright side, our breakfast sandwich was top notch with its egg, bacon, cheese, aioli, and caramelized onions all in perfect harmony. The margherita's mozz and toppings were fresh though the thin crust was more like a flatbread in texture. Lastly, our son's French toast was fluffy and generously portioned. Ultimately, we enjoyed our food, but we were seriously frustrated and disappointed with the poor service especially with having to keep a close eye on our toddler's schedule. read more

Came here for drinks on a Sunday afternoon with a friend, and we got seated within 5 minutes (we had no reservations). Try to find street parking otherwise there's paid parking at the hotel. Credit cards accepted and they'll bring the machine to you. Bathrooms are available inside the hotel, to the left (around the bar). Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Quite a few people were celebrating birthdays when we went. It's good for big groups. They had live music when we were there, so the vibes were fun. They have cocktails as well as non-alcoholic options (primarily coffees and teas) available. We didn't try any of the food during this visit, but I'm curious to see how they'd taste during a HH. read more

We had a great brunch today at Zinc. Food was good but what was of note was our server, Jenna. She noticed one of our party barely touched her meal. She graciously asked if she did not like it. My friend admitted it was cooked well, just not what she expected. Jenna replied, let me remove that from the bill. You shouldn't have to pay if you didn't like it.
