    Pizza Monster!!
    Matthew L.

First Street Apizza is a New Haven-style pizzeria that opened in Seymour, Connecticut in January 2005. It was founded by restaurateur Chris Guerra. In 1998, when he was just 23-years-old, Guerra opened his first restaurant: Dayton Street Apizza in New Haven. After its popularity took off, Guerra looked into opening a sister pizzeria in a nearby town. Seven years later he found a small location on 1st Street in downtown Seymour and dubbed the new pizzeria 'First Street Apizza'. Both pizzerias make New Haven-style thin crust pizza and the menu features a variety of gourmet toppings including artichoke hearts, broccoli rabe, eggplant, and cherry peppers. Guerra later purchased the whole building that was attached to Dayton Street Apizza. In 2012, on the opposite side of his original pizzeria, he and Sara Holycross (his partner in business and life) opened Cilantro Fresh Mexican Grill. Guerra passed away unexpectedly in 2016; Holycross continues to run his three restaurants. I recently stopped for pizza at First Street Apizza. I had previously tried the pizza at Dayton Street Apizza and thought that it was pretty good. I was in downtown Seymour on this particular day to see a triple feature at the nearby Strand Theater. I thought that getting some pizza before the show sounded like a good idea. The interior of the pizzeria is tiny. They have a few tables and chairs but most of their business seems to be take-out. After looking over the menu, I decided to get a medium pie with half "New Haven Fresh Clam" (fresh chopped clams, mozzarella, fresh garlic, extra virgin olive oil) and half "Pesto Chicken Special" (white pizza, grilled chicken, pesto, mozzarella, sliced tomato). The pizza was flavorful and delicious. The crust didn't quite have the signature char that you would get from a traditional brick oven, but it was still pretty crispy. It paired well with a bottle of locally-produced Foxon Park Iron Brew. I only ate about half the pie and reheated the leftovers for the next day. In addition to pizza, they also make calzones, stuffed breads, subs, salads, pastas, salads, and various appetizers. I enjoyed the pizza at First Street Apizza and would definitely order from them again!

So I found this place because most shops in the area do not sell single slices. I literally called 3 other places and I would have to buy a small/ personal pie which would take about 20 minutes. I needed something quick for my child to have before after-school activities. Luckily, this place met my needs. I ordered 2 slices and he told me to pick a drink; they run a 2 slice and a drink special for 6 bucks. Can't comment on the pizza but the place is clean, there is outside parking along the store front; quiet 1 way street.

I don't understand the low ratings. This is mostly a take out place and should be rated as such. We ordered a large pizza and it was good. We consider ourselves pizza aficionados as we lived near Roselands pizza for many years. We have since moved to Beacon Falls. Now I am not going to compare to Roselands because that is another league all by itself. So on its own merits the pizza was very good. Ample fresh toppings, sauce and cheese were good. Crust was thin and well cooked. Overall a very good pizza. With regards to price, well in these times if you want to eat out or take out your going to pay a little more than before. So price was comparable. We will definitely be back and try other dishes.

Continuing on the New Haven Apizza trail today with a stop at First Street Apizza in Seymour, CT. Amazing white clam. One of the best yet. As for the place, it's an old school joint with three tables and a counter. The woman handling customer service was awesome. The place was clean and had a good neighborhood social vibe. So much so that I ran into, Chris a fellow Pizzaholic!

Couldn't believe the low rating on this place because I love it. There is a bit of a "Logan's Run" feel to the place because I swear I've never seen anyone over the age of 25 working there. That aside, I really dig the pizza here. My personal favorite is the mushroom as shown below. I usually like to pair it with an order of wings (go for the hot honey BBQ!).

Ordered a Jumbo Shrimp Pizza tonight. Pick up time was an extra 15 minutes than what I was told over the phone. Smelled delicious on the drive home. But when I did get home and opened the box... never mind Jumbo... but where's the shrimp!?

I am a fan indeed. Yes I know there are awesome eats in New Haven (Sally's, Pepe's, Modern, Bar?) but for the valley this is where I enjoy going. It is small with three 4 tops and an eating counter however our party of 5 did just fine. Dad got the eggplant parm sub - huge portion and easily feeds 2. We also got a fresh mushroom pizza as well as a half bacon, half eggplant pie. Of course you need to wash it all down with Foxon Park pure sugar soda! Orange, cherry grape, lime - all the colors of the rainbow. The pizza is thin, thin - the way I like it and has a generous amount of toppings. The mozzarella is fresh ( they grate it there) and they use local ingredients like potato chips from Old Lyme to sauces and bread from New Haven. ( They have a sister restaurant in Westville). The service was very friendly and attentive. The young man waiting on us was very pleasant and was especially nice to my father. There was a brisk take away and delivery service going on while we were there and we were still well looked after. For these reasons and more...it was a 4 star experience this evening at 1st Street Apizza!

The fresh clam pizza was watery and no taste. I specifically asked if it was fresh clams which it was not but I've never had a watery pizza.

Born and raised in Eptahori, Greece, Tzepos immigrated to Connecticut in the 1950s with his family. He opened his namesake pizzeria in downtown Seymour in 1970. The name "Zois" is the Greek male equivalent of the female given name "Zoey", but it is also the Greek word for "life". Zois Pizza became well-known for their Greek-style pizza which is cooked in pans. Tzepos' brother Nick also operated pizzerias throughout Connecticut's Naugatuck Valley. The last pizzeria he ran before his retirement was Oxford Pizza Palace, which is currently operated by his son John. Zois Pizza is and has always been a family-run establishment. Zois' son Jim Tzepos has been running the day to day operations since the early 2000s, but Zois still pops in from time to time to make some pies. In addition to the signature Greek-style pan pies, the menu also consists of salads, appetizers, grinders, trays and calzones. I recently stopped in for dinner at Zois Pizza for the first time. I often go to downtown Seymour to see cult film screenings at the Strand Theater. I usually stop at an area restaurant beforehand to grab dinner, so I decided to try out Zois' on my most recent outing. I looked over the menu and decided to order three small pies so I could sample a few different kinds. The three that I ordered were the "Greek" (cheese pizza topped w/ fresh tomato, spinach, feta, garlic & oregano), the "Greek Godfather" (cheese pizza topped w/ sausage & roasted red peppers), and the "Roula Special" (cheese pizza topped w/ chicken, bacon, broccoli & garlic). Although I'm partial to New Haven-style apizza, these Greek-style pan pies were very good. They were full of flavor and had a nice and light, airy crust. At one point, my server checked on me and asked which of the three were my favorite. I told her that I enjoyed all three, but it was the Roula Special that really hit the spot. She responded, "OMG! That's my pizza! I'm Roula!" It turns out that she was Roula Tzepos: Zois' granddaughter! To drink, I enjoyed some cans of New England Brewing's "Fuzzy Baby Ducks" and "Sea Hag" IPAs. Overall, I had a very enjoyable experience at Zois'. I even had some leftovers to bring home for my family to try. If you're looking for a good place to grab dinner in downtown Seymour, then head to Zois'!

Their site says that they have 15 taps featuring local craft beers, but once we sat, we were immediately told they did not have a number of items on the menu. Very few of the beers were local, so I settled on a Yeungling, which was unfortunately flat, sour, and warm. I returned it, and our server was happy to get something else. He did not take it off the bill however which was disappointing. Our server let us know that he was a very experienced bartender, but every time a drink was served, he grabbed it by the mouth of the glass. Gross. Also, several times, the server would ask one person at the table if they'd like another and run away before seeing if everyone at the table was OK. The pizza was the saving grace, and just the way I like it... Thin & Crispy (as stated on the Staff's uniforms). Cooked in a cast iron skillet, it was a unique, and welcome twist. I went for the clam casino special, which was very good. I would definitely get it again if available. Maybe with a squeeze of lemon next time. My wife got the chicken cutlet with hot peppers which was also very good, but totally overloaded with garlic. Wedge salad was good, but could have used a little more dressing. Maybe they just had an off night. I will try them again, but my experience and other recent reviews seems to trend that the staff lacks leadership and needs a significant amount of training. If they could get the management and service right, this place could unlock a ton of potential.

I feel this place can be better, service be more consistent. Beer can be updated and fresh. Came for a music event and the lighting and stage are nice. Will come back to try pizza again, maybe just a sauce and cheese.

The pizza is good and consistent though. It's not awesome like it is at their West Haven store, but it's good. Good flavors & toppings. They do make their own sausage for those meatlovers out there. Where i fall flat are with their meatball parm grinders. In my opinion they're nowhere as good at the pizzas. They do fall short with their grinders. I keep trying them to try and end up with a better result than the previous time but it hasn't happened. So I'll stick to their pizzas. The last time the meatball parm was barely warm. It cooled off or they didn't warm it enough. The pic shows the mozzarella cheese has cooled. The pic was taken as soon as I got in the car to leave. "We all know our cameras eat first." The flavor isn't really there either with their meatballs. Other than that, the flavor with their pizzas are good. Tasty cheese and sausage. Don't forget the fox on park birch beer though. It's a must. Crisp & refreshing. The store inside is very small. It is very clean though. They only have medium 14" pizzas. I tried for a small and was told only the medium. That's totally fine. No issues with that. Service is fine whenever I'm there. What is don't like is that you don't get a printed receipt. Only text or email it to you. I don't go for that. I need to check my receipts when I eat out. You never know. And speaking of never knowing. Most recent visit, I was surprised how one meatball parm grinder and one sausage pizza came to $39 and change. But i shrugged it off and paid. Made sure i grabbed to go menu to check price. I went down the street and pulled over to do the bath with their menu. What I came up with is they charged me for an additional topping. Not cool. Not good. I called them to mention what happened. They made good though. I explained who I was, that i just left. Gave them my name. They checked. They realized and said I'd receive a credit in a few days. Thankfully they were correct. I did see that charge go back on my credit card as a credit. Happy that they're trustworthy, which they are.
