My picky, not so foodie friend ate here many, many years ago and she had a hankering to return, so of course we went. This was my first visit. Old school, no frills neighborhood favorite that I was glad to get to try. We arrived around 4pm and while the place was pretty filled, there was only a few minute wait. As others mentioned, there is no one to greet you at the entrance or tell you to write your name on the waitlist...so be sure to do that. Paper tacked on the wall. We received menus right away but it did take some time for our order to be taken. Clams casino, eggplant grinder, small cheese, and medium sausage ( crumbled), onions and peppers. Fresh brew iced tea, unsweetened. Our dishes did take some time to get to the table. Service was top notch! Thank you Coleen! She knew her stuff and gladly answered all our questions with a sincere smile. The clams casino dish was fresh, full of flavor and texture, and probably one of the best I have ever had. Really. Just. WOW. very impressive pizza tucked in the quiet part of derby, just down the road from dew drop wings. I was right about leaving early to get a seat. It's a small joint with an even smaller parking lot. Server was warm, friendly. She immediately noticed that it was my first time and showed me the massive portions of the dishes served there. I ordered a medium meatball pizza and the shrimp Florentine that I regretted because of the tall price. The shrimp was huge, and plenty on the pizza so they made sure it was worth the money. Short of that it was amazing. All the seafood pizzas including the Connecticut signature clam one is around $40 or so and it only comes in medium. So be advised should you order anything like that. It's very old timey and a warning that it's cash tip only. If you don't have cash, you have to write down the tip to have the server manually enter it in on the tab. My complaint is that I cant decide where it goes on the pizza scale. It's very close but below the three big pizza places - only by a tiny margin. I would put roseland pizza under zuppardis. I don't think I can recall another pizza place where I kept saying "WOW." I will be back now that I know what to expect. read more

There is a reason why Roseland Apizza has been around for so long... Great food!!!! The pizza is an undeniably amazing thin crust pizza. Anchovy was my first topping of choice. Great, Real, I love Anchovy.... The second Pizza was a Tomato n Mushroom (red sauce) with fresh garlic... Just amazing!!! This is the type of pizza I grew up on (minus the burnt crust lol) I also wanted some vegetables so I ordered a house salad, and that went well above my expectations. It had more than just the traditional basic toppings. I wanna go back for the Antipasto salad. They also offer a family salad that is large enough for the table to share Customer Service was good. Just so u are aware, no one is going to greet you when u walk in. You have to write your name on the board with the number of guests. The staff calls each party in order as tables become available. What's annoying is the small crowded waiting area with ppl sometimes blocking the board and/or the walkway. We waited in the car and just went inside to check our place. We had 6 parties ahead of us and the wait was only 20-30min... I'm sure that in the summer it's probably longer. I also recommend carpooling because the parking lot is tight and busy I heard the food food was just as awesome as the pizza. I sort of hate to give this place 4 stars, but the pizza is 4 stars. It is very good, but more NY style than New Haven, and below favorite pizza restaurants (Pepe's, Sally's, Zuppardi's, Modern, Ernie's) in New Haven and elsewhere (ok I'll admit it - As a NY it pains me to, but CT pizza is the best. Lucali's and Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn are both solid too.) That said the Ceasar salad was amazing like 6 stars, easily be the best Ceasar salad I've had in my life. Nice crutons, Parmesan great dressing. The fresh bread was also great. That said, I saw some great lasagna coming out of the oven and every seemed happy with their food. I could see overall this place being a 5, and I could see someone on the pizza alone rating it as low as a 3. Anyway, this place is a solid 4 given the name. Final note, the place opens at 1 PM on Sunday and we got there at like 1:30 PM. The small parking lot was packed with cars spilling out into the residential street nearby. We got a table right away, but there was a wait not long after. Though by the time we left it was getting a bit quieter. This was a bucket list destination spot for me having been to all the acclaimed New Haven Pillars. For the feeling of the old-school neighborhood haunt, the family owned/family run/family pride-type feeling, and really good food...Roseland hits all the marks. The service was authentic and fantastic. Conversational, no corporate pieces of mandatory flare, just good honest people doing a damn good job. I had a salad, clams casino, and a small cheese pizza due to the professional scorers giving it high marks. I loved the salad, the bread that came with it, the mismatched plates, and the clams were exceptional. Washed it down with a diet birch beer ... what could be better?!? The pizza was good. It was very good. I'd say as advertised and I would always get one for the table. But I looked in envy of some of the speciality pies and entrees on other tables. Makes me want to go back asap. Pizza is fantastic! It is by far the best around and stands strong against any New Haven pizza place. Service is great too. My only complaint is that they need to clean the place. You can see the chunks of dust falling off the light fixtures and pictures on the walls. A little dust rag to them (even get new light fixtures entirely) would go a long way. I get that they're keeping the place "old school" and that is fine, but no one wants to see a thick layer of dust next to their head while they're eating. read more

I have been to all the popular apizza places in New Haven and then some and I would say, this is my FAVORITE one! Roseland is the best for apizza! If my family was visiting, I would take them here any day. Their sauce is delicious! Tangy and savory. Also, get all your pizzas with grated garlic, so so good! My personal favorite was the classic sauce with grated parm. My partners favorite was the mozzarella pizza. Their mozzarella with sausage was also yummy. We got 2 smalls and 1 medium pizza and basically had a whole medium left over. Their portions are great! It was only $45 for all 3 pizzas (pretty good deal to me). And we got a free loaf of bread! The service was fantastic! We came in on a Sunday afternoon and we're sat right away. The rest of the restaurant was busy and packed, but still ran efficiently. Our server was the kindest person and checked in on us a few times. Around the walls is a bunch of old school photos too. You can really tell it's a long time owned family business. A friend asked what I thought of my sausage, pepperoni and green pepper pizza from Roseland today. I said "It was great. . . 'Who am I kicking out of my CT Top 5?' great." This was my second trip to Roseland and first in several years. I remember loving that first Roseland pizza and my experience dining in at Roseland in general, but it was too long ago to consider for a proper place in my CT pizza rankings. This second visit clinched their spot. The pizza had thin crust. Sturdy with good chew on the bottom crust though. The pizza is more or less New Haven style, but has less char on the undercarriage. There was some char on the outer crust, which was crispy. So there's a little something for the chewy, and the crisp fans. The toppings were good. I believe the sausage is made in house, and in any event, it's substantial and a definite distinguishing factor. The peppers had a bit of good acidity as if they had been lightly brined. The pepperoni and mozzarella were classic and both good. The sauce was very good too. I got takeout for this visit and ate a few slices nearby before driving home. My pizza was ready on time. It was juicy and beautiful. Roseland is popular and tends to get crowded. Parking can be rough and I remember the seating being a bit cramped, but the restaurant is still old school neighborhood cool. If you get takeout, there is picnic table seating at the restaurant, and there is a nearby state park and high school bleachers for additional seating options. Roseland is definitely one of the best pizzerias in CT. 5 Stars read more

Finally made it to Roseland Apizza in Derby, this place has been on my radar for a very long time. Called ahead, was 20 minutes away, and the fellow on the phone said my sausage & garlic pie would be ready in 25 minutes. When I arrived, I was a bit surprised to find the parking lot full at 2 o'clock on a Saturday afternoon. No problem, I parked on the street. Walked into the "Orders to Go" entrance, and my pie came out in 5 minutes, as promised. Wow, when I opened that box, I was blown away by a beautiful looking pie. I had passed a State park (Osbornedale) down the street while driving to Roseland, so I headed back to the park to consume my pizza. The pie went down way too easy, Roseland lives up to their reputation. They are certainly in the upper echelon of the pantheon of awesome Connecticut Apizza. Char was perfect, sauce outstanding, and I loved the sausage they use. Looking forward to a return trip to Roseland Apizza in the very near future, my wife can't wait to get there for her 1st time also. read more

We had to check out the hype on this place. We drove 35 minutes on a Saturday afternoon to beat traffic and the dinner rush. The dining room opens at 1pm. We were early and we waited...so did others. There was a small group waiting to get in. Inside is nothing special, some old wooden booths, mismatched tables and chairs and plates, old family photos on the walls. Once opened they seated everyone quickly and servers got right to it! Our server was very sweet. We ordered right away...a small mozzarella with half pepperoni and an small mashed potato and bacon. We got our drinks...foxon park soda, yes, they have cherry! It's my husband's favorite and not everyone has it. We got a basket of soft homemade bread that was delicious. Pizzas were out in 10-15 minutes. They looked good and tasted even better. Super thin, crispy crust, but firm enough to hold the toppings. The kind of crust you don't leave behind! You eat every bite. The pepperoni was very flavorful and abundant. They aren't stingy with the toppings. I thought the mashed potato pizza was a little salty, but bacon and mashed potatoes can be. Our server boxed up what little was had left over. Credit cards are accepted but tips are cash only. It wasn't a problem for us and there is a sign at the door. I attempted to find a restroom but didnt see one and didnt want to wander though the busy kitchen area. It looks like takeout has a walk up window outisde. The good is they allowed us to order some beer to enjoy while we waited for a table. The service was friendly and efficient. Pizza was tasty. Not New Haven quality, but good. Unfortunately, we had fruit flies / gnats swarming around us, the walls and the food...after telling the server that night and calling them to tell the manager the next day, they didn't offer any kind of discount or return incentive or even assure us they are a clean establishment. Recently went to Roseland for some Sunday pizza. We arrived shortly after they opened and were able to get a table right away. We opted for the Fried Mozz to start as the garlic bread seemed a little steep comparatively. Our waitress also brought out some freshly baked bread. I enjoyed the bread and fried mozz. I don't think my fiancé was a fan of the fried mozz because the sauce was a little too chunky for his liking. He ended up with his standard plain cheese and I decided to live on the wild side and go with a shrimp casino. My fiancé enjoyed his pie. My was good too! This thing was loaded with large shrimp and bacon! Very tasty. It probably was $40 bucks for my pie... eek... but hey you live once. Portnoy isn't wrong; the pizza is fantastic, but you're splitting hairs between Pepe, Modern, Sally's and here. They're all outstanding! The place is a nice but small mom and pop on the edges of an old WWII factory town, and based on the speed and disposition of the service, the waitstaff are from that era too. Don't expect them to follow the sign in on the whiteboard where you write your name & party #. You'll get skipped for bigger groups or former football stars. It's a great local dive that is not interested in their growing fame. I can't blame them; I wouldn't want to share this gem either! Whenever we come back to visit we need to stop into a couple favorite pizza spots. We have been to all the New Haven must try spots and Roseland has to be a top pick for pizza in CT. Sweet flavorful sauce, crispy crust, overall great flavor. Cute location, nice staff, place was packed at 5 on a Wednesday night as well as seemed to be busy with pickups. Flash forward 18 years and my younger daughter loves to visit popular pizza places around the state so when we found ourselves close by we made it a point to get there for opening time. I needed to come revisit Roseland's Apizza as I gave it a two star last review. Additionally, I had to come check them back out as Dave Portney's from Barstool review was a 8.6. My daughter and I came a little after open time which opened at one on Saturday. The place was already packed with customers when we arrived. We were seated immediately but a waitress didn't get to are table until ten minutes after we were seated. We ordered are drinks and a small half cheese and pepperoni pizza with garlic, which I'm glad we ordered a small pizza. We were waiting and about an half an hour goes by and still no pizza. The waitress came to are table after forty five minutes and told us an establishment called in for fifteen pizza's and that's why it's taking so long for are pizza to come out, which she should of told us that while we were seated. She told us it's on a first come first served basis. As I was waiting on are pizza, I looked around and everyone that ordered waited a while for there food. The pizza finally arrived and my daughter and I took a bite and it was alright. Not great pizza but not bad either. I didn't taste the fresh garlic and the sauce was lacking flavor. The crust was okay but in my opinion, it's definitely not an 8.6. The overall pizza was just lacking flavor. Im glad I got to try the pizza while dinning inside because that's how you know if the pizza is good or not ,when it comes straight out of the oven. I decided to put my order in anyway and wait it out. My pick-up time was 7:40pm. They have the timing down to the T bc that's exactly when it was ready. The staff was pleasant when taking my order. Ambiance : This must be the towns best pizza spot. Cars were parked on the grass across the street. Kids were playing outside while either waiting for their pizza or waiting to dine in. Inside is a bit small for a large crowd. The counter where you pay the cashier is very limited with spacing. It's basically a multi-family home, and the 1st level was renovated into a restaurant with a large kitchen. It has a homely feel! I would give them a 10/10 the ingredients is fresh and the best sausage & Mushroom ever. Sausages in every bite, they are definitely not skimping. Mushrooms were fresh and not canned. A staple in the Housatonic Valley, Roseland Apizza does not disappoint. Once you walk through the door, the vibe just tells you you are in for a real treat. A small place, this place on a Friday night was just jammin. The menu was short and sweet, with some pasta and ravioli choices, along with some grinders. But the reason why I came was for their renowned pizza! I was also told to order the salad anti-pasta family style. With that said, the order went in, one large salad, anti-pasta, and a large meatball and garlic pizza The large salad antipasto was simply amazing, loaded with fire, roasted peppers, Italian, cold, cuts, lettuce, black, and green olives, along with other items I just can't remember. This was served with a side of bread, which was light and crusty, don't eat all the bread before the salad gets there. This bread should absolutely be used to dip into the remaining dressing on the bottom of the bowl. Now to the Apizza. The pizza arrived, piping hot, thin crust, and just was a beautiful piece. A work of art. Upon taking a slice, there was very minimal flop, thin crust, nice chair on the bottom and top, and the first bite.... All the combined flavors of this garlic and hamburg pizza were simply amazing and delicious that words cannot even describe. Also, there was a great beer. Menu both draft and bottle. Looking at the wine menu looked very well presented El Prez, from barstool sports, one bite everybody knows the rules fame gave this place a very high score. I'm not quite sure what the score was, but I think it was mid 8s. My opinion is this place is a top 10 in all of Connecticut, definitely a top 5 in the New Haven area after the big three in New Haven, and Zuppardi's in West Haven. For people outside this region, if you want to try out a really cool place with a great vibe, this should be a bucket list pizza visit no doubt. read more
