Once we got to the restaurant the waitress said the wait time would be an hour and a half. However we were able to find an online reservation for within 30 minutes. After being sat down, we ordered 4 appetizers to have "tapas" style dinner and we first got two of them within reasonable time. However, after 45 minutes waiting, we decided to cancel our order. The manager showed up quite flustered and while he did say it was up to us whether we wanted to cancel, the food "was ready" (though they never brought it out). He also said we had only been waiting a few minutes, which made the experience even worse because he was lying. Apart from the very unfortunate service, the food and cocktails were great. To be honest, we landed at FIG for a few reasons, the first of which is I tried to get a reservation at Husk before we arrived and realized that was virtually impossible. I noticed FIG in my initial search of dinner restaurants and saw glowing reviews but assumed I'd have equally bad luck getting a reservation. After an early afternoon stroll around the neighborhood surrounding our perfect little Airbnb, I noticed FIG was just a block or so away. I decided we should stop and take a look at the menu. We couldn't get a reservation before 10pm on something like May 10th (with a target date of April 14th), but their website perfectly explained that many people dine without a reservation and are encouraged to visit without one. Since the restaurant was so close to our home base, we decided to give it a shot at around 8pm. We were originally told our wait would be up to an hour, and neither of us in my party of 2 minded that at all. We posted up at two of the cocktail seats and ordered drinks while we waited. The bar was right in front of us and is seated on the same waiting list as the dining area, so we got to watch all the delicious dishes pass by as we waited our turn. Every single employee in this building, including even the food runner and the cocktail waitress, are factors to what makes this place so great. We stopped a food runner to ask her what one of the dishes was she'd just dropped off and she described to us, without any hesitation, in such beautiful detail, every ingredient and each preparation technique for both of the plates she'd just delivered. If I wasn't genuinely excited before, I definitely was then. Our cocktail server was no different. She was intimately familiar with every flavor profile, preparation technique and ingredient in every glass of wine and every cocktail on the menu, and even recommended a cocktail for me that wasn't on the menu (I prefer a vodka based drink and everything listed is gin based). The entire restaurant was full, and everyone was busy, but we never felt unwelcome, rushed, or burdensome with any request or questions we had. Next came the best part: the community table. We didn't really know what to expect, but the hostess approached us about 30 minutes into our wait and said there was room for us at the large, round community table near the bar if we were interested. We enthusiastically agreed, mostly because at this point we were eager to try some of the dishes we'd seen. We sat down in the middle of a conversation already in progress and a very sweet, talkative party of 1 (Alex from Brooklyn, we soon learned) was leading the conversation and immediately asked us where we were from, which helped us introduce ourselves to the rest of the table. Our new friends from Connecticut (party of 2) and Atlanta (party of 3) were sadly already paying out and getting ready to leave, but what happened next couldn't have been more perfect if we'd planned it. After the aforementioned parties paid and left, the 2 seats to our right were filled by two sweet ladies who we quickly learned were from the DFW area. After a brief, slightly begrudged congratulations on the Rangers win over the Astros earlier in the evening, we were off to the races. Everyone started talking like we'd know each other for years. Our server Drew came over a little while later and started describing "a few highlights" from the menu (he literally described every single dish on the menu in the same romantic, perfect detail as the food runner before) that made our decisions even more difficult. I finally decided we weren't going to make a bad decision no matter what we chose. We started with the ricotta gnocchi and chose the tilefish and red snapper for dinner. A few minutes later, 2 seats on our left were filled with a very nice older couple who was here, we learned, as a result of a tennis tournament they were competing in. Our table erupted in cheers and laughter when we asked where they were from and they answered "Houston." A table full of Texans (minus Alex from Brooklyn, but we were recruiting her pretty heavily throughout the meal and I'm confident she's seriously considering relocating now). As we enjoyed the delivery of our drinks and meals, we shared future travel plans, discussed the Hurricane and its impact, and of course, all things sports. What started as a random shot at a nice date night evolved into exactly what makes Charleston such an incredible place to be - a huge table of strangers became friends. I know this was an amazing evening (which ended at midnight, an hour after their posted closing time, but again, we never felt unwelcome or burdensome), and I imagine parts of it could be recreated elsewhere with the right attitude, but without the amazing staff, the perfect setup and the amazing food, I'm not sure I'd still be floating this morning. read more

My response to FIG is FIWI (Fig Is Worth It). The proof you say? Kellz and I drove up from Savannah just for dinner at FIG. No other activity - just to see what the crew had on tap. Hats off to the folks up front, our reservation was for 9 on a Wednesday but got to town early and just decided to drop in. They worked us in the best they could and treated us like champs. There is something to be said for staff who cares/ believes/ is nuts about the product they are putting out and our waiter was no different. Dude was great, explained the nuances of wreckfish and trigger fish and even recommended a the perfect spirit-free drink for my wife who is with child. We had the Gnocchi to start - please for the love of all the saints please start with this, mains were triggerfish and wreckfish and we finished it off with the baked Alaska. I could try to describe it, but I will save my inadequate words. Just know that everything was amazing and not just in the ordinary sense that you hear 10 times an hour in life, but the food is really awe-inspiring. Maybe my expectations were too high. I wanted to give Fig 4 stars at least, but considering the prices and all the hype, I don't think it's that worth it. The decor and ambiance were nothing special, and it was surprisingly noisy considering it wasn't very full and the other diners weren't particularly boisterous. The server thoroughly explained everything on the menu, but his attitude was a bit pretentious and almost condescending ("do you know what this means?" *smirking, knowing that of course we don't because we don't look like connoisseurs of obscure food terms*). APPETIZERS: The bread is decent but would have been better if served warm. The gnocchi with sheep's milk ricotta appetizer was DELICIOUS. Excellent taste and texture. ENTREES: I ordered the skate wing chop (skate is like a ray). It would have been much better if it had the same delicious lemony flavor as the accompanying mushrooms, cauliflowers, and greens (creamed shredded jack). My fiance had the triggerfish with clams. It was pretty good, but I've had better seafood for much less than ~$30 per entree. DESSERTS: The server made all of the desserts sound mouth watering, but we were especially excited about the lemon tart. It ended up being very disappointing. The sticky sorghum cake, on the other hand, was amazing, especially with the eggnog ice cream. I've been in the restaurant industry for years and have heard from esteemed chefs that FIG is the place to go in Charleston and they were absolutely right! From the ambiance to the food to the service, FIG was everything I imagined it to be. Even during the era of Coronavirus where employees have to wear masks and gloves, we could feel the sincerity from everyone we came in contact with-- especially our server, Kirsten. She was so sweet and helpful with wine pairings and food choices. We had the scallop and ramp postage stamp ravioli, the burnt eggplant with cottage cheese and their mouth watering seafood stew, among a few other dishes. Truly impeccable all around. We went to Charleston with an intense purpose of eating really good food and this place surpassed my expectations. We had black bass (yum), mushroom risotto (very yum), and spaghetti with crab (oh my, the best!!!) as our apps, and our entrees were grilled grouper and fish stew and had sweet peppers as a side. The fish stew's broth was absolutely amazing. It has a really casual feel (as I assume like most places are in Charleston), and the service was excellent. We visited Charleston last fall for a wedding and had dinner at Fig. My boyfriend and I split the ricotta gnocchi, the tomato tarte tatin, and the snapper. The food was just average to me. The tarte tatin was tasty but nothing revolutionary. The snapper was especially blah and I did not finish my portion. We felt a little spoiled for being used to better, fancier stuff eating out, but then we had the dessert. Chocolate budino with sea salt, crouton, and olive oil was solid but more importantly, the SORGHUM CAKE. The cake, served with caramel and ice cream, was ridiculously, eye-poppingly good. The texture is just incredible. My boyfriend enjoyed his with $32-a-pop Pappy Van Winkle 23-year and was very pleased. At least our dinner ended on a high note. I have to agree with another Yelper about this place. I had very high expectations considering the strong recommendations I received and stellar Yelp reviews I read. In terms of the ambiance, the interior is somewhat casual but trendy and upscale at the same time. They really push the farm-to-table aspect of the menu, and our server definitely spent way too much time hyping all of the selections. We sampled the Nine Vegetable Salad and all ordered the Poached Olive Oil Salmon. Both were tasty, but not anything amazing at all. The veggies had a strong, pickled flavor to them while the Salmon was just weird all around. The server mentioned the fish would appear raw from the low-temperature poaching, but I found it had no flavor. Also, the texture and temperature of the fish were very unappealing and bizarre. I felt like I was eating lukewarm, raw salmon. For dessert, we tried the Vanilla Pound Cake with Banana Ice Cream. Again, the item sounded very tasty based on the description, but it ended up being a flavorless sugar-overload. Our server was pleasant and very attentive, but she did go a little overboard on the menu descriptions. At times, the staff seemed very posh in a hipster way that was not appealing for such a high price tag. Our server's five minute description of the succulent salmon would have been more appropriate if it actually tasted good. An average experience at best for a very high price tag. This was our favorite meal during our May trip in Charleston! We couldn't nab a reservation in time, but we were able to get two seats at the communal round table. It had its pros and cons. When we first sat down, the people were so friendly. They were finishing up their meal and were replaced with complainers... ya win some, ya lose some. I started with a hibiscus cocktail, which was a little bit on the sweet side for me. But still refreshing nonetheless. After reading reviews, I knew that we had to get the ricotta gnocchi. Even though I'm generally not the biggest fan (very picky) when it comes to this dish. BUT IT'S ALL TRUE. It's one of the best overall pasta dishes I've ever had. The bolognese sauce somehow tastes so light and fresh. We also got one of our favorite appetizers, chicken liver pate... so good, especially on that brioche! We obviously had to ask for another slice. For entrees, I got the fish stew and my boyfriend got the prawns. I appreciated the crunchy toast for dunking into the stew. I love a good dipping situation. It's definitely a hearty serving of seafood in the little bowl! The prawns were nicely sized, and I think my boyfriend liked (not loved) his dish but he ate it all up. Our meal and server (who was from the Philadelphia area!) were delightful. Came in to Fig prior to attending the Charleston Food & Wine festival. From the beginning, the dinner was fantastic. I've had some great dinners - this was one. Potentially more important, I've had some fantastic service/servers - and our server was one of the best I've ever had. Our table of four shared a couple appetizers then each got our own "entree" for the main meal. Two of us (myself included) opted to just get another appetizer as an entree. To my surprise, the chef personally came out to present my omelet (come on, it's just an omelet - but not at Fig). He discussed the omelet - and that he doesn't trust anyone else to make the omelet - and our other entrees then spooned the truffle oil over it - it was probably the best omelet I've ever had. Food was great. Wine (good value) - I called ahead and they have a $25 corkage for wines not on their list. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine for our appetizers. Then, I was between a couple bottles for the second course. I opted for the per glass/bottles and asked the server to taste two of them to see which one I preferred. She actually returned with three tastes - opting to give me another option that she thought I may have liked. We ended up ordering one of my choices (cab franc) and enjoyed it greatly. I would give this a five star, but we got off to a poor start. We were sat in a cubby table way in the back, next to a four top with some very loud business men. It took our waitress 5 min to get to us, another 5 or so to return, which is when we asked to be moved. They were very accommodating, but it was 20-25 min before our wine was finally poured. On to the good part. The food was crazy good, from bread to dessert and everything in between. We stayed with starters. I had spring vegs with homemade fromage blanc, my wife the arugula salad. Overall one of the best meals I have had in the past year! We started with the Pate and Ricotta Gnocchi. The pate was perfectly prepared and spread easily onto the brioche toasts. It came with homemade pickles and mustard to make you feel like you were in a French bistro. The ricotta gnocchi was to die for and could have been served as a main. The Gnocchi melted in your mouth and the bolognese sauce was not heavy and paired well with the gnocchi. We had the grouper and bourride as our mains. I was worried that the grouper would be overpowered by the borscht, but was amazed at how well the paired together. The broth with bourride was so just flavorful and rich you wanted to lick the bottom of your bowl. Service was also outstanding and the cocktails on point. Yup. This was a five star experience. I had plans to attend a post-proposal dinner with my friends. They had already contacted management for special accommodations at the table upon our arrival. The staff and management exceeded our idea of what to expect. The waiter was very helpful and had super human white teeth! He was a real gem and we loved him. I'm sure he has some crazy stories about us, more specifically me, hahaha! But, he was a real sport!!! I'm not a very picky eater, but I found it a little difficult to find something that I would come back to have again. The menu is a bit too eclectic and could benefit with a "classic" item or two. They just repainted the inside and I found it very relaxing and modern, yet cozy. They had eucalyptus plant by the bathroom, and that was a nice touch!! So we came here with no reservations Oops, needed them 4-5 weeks in advance. The complaint is, when you put your name down you have to stay in the restaurant and there is nowhere to stand. They have a table for people waiting but it holds maybe 8-10, and there could be 15-20 waiting. So it gets crowded and you're standing in the way of people getting served. Its a good way of bringing in money but a bad way of making your patrons feel awkward in the way of everything. The saving grace was the food. Everything we ordered was really good, we ended up eating at the bar and our server/bartender was amazing. I would recommend this place but have a reservation - if you don't have a reservation I can't recommend this place until they change their system to something more logical. read more

Came here the last night of our vacation and the food was 10/10. We are from New York so we know good food and the food rivaled NYC restaurants. When they first sat us down we weren't served for quite sometime but the waiter did apologize. He coursed our our meal out which I appreciated because I hate when all the food you orders arrives at once. However he had our very savory strong tomato tarte come out as the same time as the delicate sashimi yellow tail dish, Which I did not think should be served at the same time! But now for the main reason I give this place 3 stars as opposed to 5 the table in my direct view of vision throughout the meal was a guy who was wearing flip flops which he kicked off as soon as he sat down and so I spent my ENTIRE MEAL LOOKING AT HIS DIRTY FEET! This place is not cheap and has white table clothes and very high brow food/service so the idea that 1) you would allow a man in shorts and flip flops in for dinner service and 2) have him kick of his shoes during the meal blows my mind. Honestly it ruined the meal for me! Not sure if covid has lowered their standards but such attire and behavior was shocking at what is considered a high-end restaurant. When we informed the server as such , her comment was "wish you would have told me". It was so nasty that we all looked at each other. We explained that it was not an ingredient listed on the menu. She took the salad back. Now onto the grouper. Being from coastal towns, our party has had our share of grouper. That being said, my one friend holds up her fork with this gelatinous thing falling from it and asks my opinion. I knew it was not right. My other friend the same. When we questioned it, the server abruptly called the manager who proceeded to try to convince us it was slow roasted, IT WAS RAW! All three of us could not eat our dinner and just sat and waited for the check. After almost twenty minutes, group decision was to just leave. Once we got up and started walking the manager ran after us and said, the food is no charge, but handed us a bill for $17.50 for the only cocktail we ordered. UGH...Never in my life. After the bartender brought our drinks, she asked if we were ready to order and we said no, we were just here for cocktails. She quickly let us know that she would have to "talk to us about that" (aka we needed to leave) because there may be another customer that wants to order food. Working in food and beverage previously, I can understand the frustration with customers only drinking and not eating. However, we were planning on ordering a bottle of Cabernet at the bar, making up for the lack of food order. Nonetheless, the hostess knew that we were here for just drinks and led us to the bar. The first time, we had a reservation and the second time we just walked in and were able to sit at the tall table in front of the bar after about 30-40 minutes. They change their menu pretty frequently so I can't tell you exactly what we had other than the ricotta gnocchi, which is a regular item. It is so delicate and soft, like pillows or clouds of yummy cheesy pasta...so good! Also, I was pregnant the second time we went and I have to appreciate the, for their non alcoholic cocktails, not every place has a nice menu of them. Our dinner at Fig last night was absolutely perfect, probably one of my top 10 dining experiences. The tuna crudo with sorghum kernels was a super start to the meal, and undoubtedly the best raw tuna dish I have ever experienced. This one of the most wonderful food I tasted in a long time and it was a great surprise to see that all dishes were amazing. It's not a pretentious restaurant. Must try: Lamb mint Gnocchi. This was the best dish of the night. I can't wait to try to replicate it The tartare was underwhelming, maybe because I thought the crisps were craklins but they were just fried thin layers of potatoes. Pork or potatoes, you can imagine my disappointment. Cocktails - hit or miss. I had one really terrible one. Better than average, it's no cocktail heaven like PX in Alexandria. Their beer selection was not extensive. Our waiter was very nice and patient with us even after in a drunken stupor I dropped my drink on the table.
