Fennel Confit
Nat B.

We called Sorghum & Salt after the restaurant we originally wanted to visit had to close for a special event. The hostess was nice, let us know that they have availability, and had us down for a reservation. We walked in and enjoyed their interior, which is modernist, classy, and spacious. We sat at the chef's counter but elected to order à la carte. We got the beets, pork shoulder, and the fennel confit. The beets and fennel confit were both enjoyable. I was taken aback by the pork shoulder, since it was served cold. That should be noted on the menu, especially since cold pork is not something most people would expect and is worth noting. We also got the orange vodka and the pear tequila, and both were tasty without being overwhelming, which made them easy to enjoy throughout the evening. Also, the restroom is like a disco, which was fun. Finally, we had a nice conversation with the chef, and our waitress was super sweet. Great service all around!

It's so nice to find a unique take on vegetable forward dining. Each plate was a balanced work of art. We thoroughly enjoyed everything that was placed in front of us. Service was perfect and we didn't feel rushed even though our meal progressed at a steady clip.

I loved the open kitchen and the vibe of the place, the menu was explained to us as smaller bites and our server recommended just the right amount of food for us. Fresh local ingredients and unique combinations. I'm writing this review a couple of weeks after we went so I don't remember exactly the dishes that we ordered, but I do remember that every one of them was delicious. They were flexible with making substitutions for a vegetarian. Two reasons for only four stars, and it has nothing to do with the food; the server insisted that we order all of our dishes upfront, we could not order some and then decide if we were still hungry like we usually do in a tapas place. Secondly, they refused to split the bill. We had a business meal and as it is so common, you're not allowed to have alcohol on the check for a personal business meal, but they wouldn't put 2 dishes on one bill and the rest on a second bill- they said down the line is the only way they could split it. I thought that was ridiculous and cost us $ because we were unable to write off the meal. There were some seats available at the bar where you were literally in front of the chef's area and could watch them in action. That would be a fun thing to do!

Hard to find expresso at restaurants for after dinner!!! Excellent news.

What a fantastic surprise!!!! We searched for a vegan restaurant in Charleston for dinner tonight. We spent the day here with coastal expeditions touring morris island looking for fossils. What a great way to end our day here with a fabulous creative vegan menu!! Our server was delightful. We sat at the counter and talked with the chefs as the items were prepared. Lots of bar stools making it quite pleasant for single patrons. We ordered 7 different menu items to taste as many options as possible. My favorites were the radishes, gem salad, cauliflower, carrots, gnocchi, beets, then persimmon. We will definitely come back here soon. Richard just reminded me that the vegan menu did not offer a high protein option. That would be a good addition. We were celebrating an early birthday and so they gave me a glass of bubbly!!! Very sweet.

Amazing dining experience with fun and flavorful food. The service was excellent and the new location is beautiful. We joined some friends for dinner on a Sunday evening at 6pm. We were there first guests but the dining room began to fill up as the night continued. The server was knowledgeable about the menu, very attentive, and anticipated our needs. Food arrived at the table as it was prepared and became ready. We never had a stack of dishes or an empty table waiting for the next dish. It felt as though the meal was timed perfectly. With two vegans and two with no restrictions it was easy for everyone to find things on the menu they wanted to try. This might sound a little strange, but you have to check out the restroom. LOL, just take my word for it. If you were last at their location at 186 Coming Street, check out their new location at 186 St. Philip Street.

I sat at the chefs counter and enjoyed not only a delicious meal, but had a delightful conversation with one of the chefs as well as the sweet gentleman who waited on me. It was a wonderful experience all the way around and I highly recommend this restaurant.

cool idea in the bathroom for storing mouthwash.

This was one of our food highlights in Charleston. We did our research to make a reservation for this place and left it thoroughly fulfilled and impressed. We got a liking for farm to table dining since our last trip to Austin, so wanted to experience it here in Charleston. The server here was super knowledgeable and definitely had so much knowledge about the local produce being used in our meals. Hats off to an adjacent server who also gave us a lot of tips even though he wasn't serving us. As my girl enjoyed her seafood, I ended up going with 2 items: 1) Butterbean Panzanella: Just very clean and easy to eat. 2) House made pasta: I mainly got this because I wanted to see how the chefs use the halloumi in the pasta. Damn this was so so good. I was very impressed. Also, kudos to the bathroom, which feels like you're at one of those elite nightclubs of sorts. They had one of the coolest dispensers for mouthwash I've ever seen. And - of course - I don't always see mouthwash offered to patrons at restaurants. I would definitely come back here again 20 times out of 10.

Everything was great. Did the tasting menu of four courses. The wine pairings were well done. The only thing was the service felt a little rushed at times but overall would recommend to anyone who loves veggies and delicate seafood.

Sorghum & Salt is what I always hope the restaurant experience will be. The food is fresh, creative, and of course, delicious. The dining experience is well paced, the servers are knowledgable (ours even caught an error in preparation before it was served), and the plate size is appropriate (you leave feeling properly sated if you take the server's advice). I first came here in 2021 when outdoor dining and social distancing was at the top of everyone's minds. I remember finding the interior charming and being blown away by the food. The ingredients are local and down-to-earth, but in preparation they're elevated and beautifully plated. Sorghum & Salt isn't so fancy that you feel you need to dress up, nor is the tasting menu full of things you (maybe) haven't heard of. Yet it goes toe-to-toe with some of the more expensive and fancier dining experiences I've had in my life. In no universe could I prepare for myself what Sorghum & Salt is able to make. Every dish brought something different and yet the dining experience as a whole still felt cohesive. I absolutely love that their vegetarian and vegan dishes don't feel like an afterthought - those flavors are just as well thought out and presented. When I look back at the end of the meal, it's hard to pick just one thing that stood out. I think the mark of anything truly great is that it's memorable, and that the memory holds up. I'm really happy that coming back almost 4 years later, Sorghum & Salt impressed me just as much. If you're in Charleston, this should be on the top of your list.

This place is top notch. I wish I had written this review sooner to be able to describe everything I ordered. To start, I had an impressive mocktail, that did not miss out on anything just because it was missing the booze. My friend and I ordered several dishes to share and each dish had an elevated complex presentation of flavors that blended so well! Who would think to top a savory gnocchi dish with shaved white chocolate? This place. The presentation was beautiful and well crafted in every dish. It certainly wasn't cheap? But it was worth every penny. Our server was also fantastic. Highly recommend you try this place!

Sorghum & Salt has always been a favorite of mine. I love that their menu is vegetable forward and local . Their new location just opened 2 weeks ago and omg it's so much brighter and just beautiful. The service was great. Mocktail did not disappoint, so complex and delicious. The food was delicious- we had the carrots, radish and gnocchi. Beet dessert and coffee. Everything looked like a work of art and tasted delicious! This continues to be on my favorites .

This place is Michelin level. Exquisite menu and the service matches it. Everything is exactly as mended and it's all simply delicious. Thoughtful - subtle - engaging. Just get here.

Potatoe Gnocchi itself tasted like fried french fries.

The food was edible. Maybe there was no Chef that night & an amateur home cook took over. Perhaps it was an off night?!

I am not someone who waits in line for a reservation. I always joke that if Jesus Christ is at the end of the line, I'm still not waiting. So... we paid someone to stand in line for us. The place itself is adorable. Small, intimate, and full of charm. I was a little thrown off that the only drink options are beer, wine, or water. Two people in our party don't drink, so that felt like a miss. But then the food came. And I get it now. It was, without question, some of the best food I've had in a long time. We ordered a lot, and every single dish delivered. The caviar sliders were unbelievably good, buttery, salty, and indulgent in the best way. The tuna toast, fennel and celery salad, and ceviche were all standout, with the ceviche being especially memorable. The soft shell crab and tempura flounder were perfectly done. Even the gundi surprised me. And to finish, the "not fried" ice cream and banana pudding were just outstanding. Service was excellent, warm and attentive without being over the top. The whole experience felt special. Bottom line: I hate waiting in line, and I still wouldn't. But I am very glad we found a way around it. Totally worth it.

Once they opened, someone came down the line to see if we wanted to sit now or put our name down for later. Definitely wish we would've just sat at that time since the earliest time they had once we got to the front was 8pm. Table wasn't quite ready when we popped back at 8pm but they walked us through drinks/wine lists while we waited outside and brought the drinks out to us while we waited. Got in to our table at 8:25pm. The food: Everything was delicious. We ordered 5 dishes between the 2 of us and ended up taking a little bit of the last dish home but only so we had room for dessert. Service was amazing, everyone was helpful and kind! Verdict: Would I wait in line, sweating in the 85 degree sunny weather again? Probably not. Would I wait in line again if it was a cool 70? Maybe. Honestly, didn't really fill the hype meter for me when there are SOOO many fantastic seafood restaurants in Charleston but glad I finally went! *not pictured: cacio e pepe fried cauliflower (are it before the phone could snap it)

Finds your table, if you arrive early for a reservation we had luck with them seating us and he says a kind goodbye as we left each time. Nice list of 3 mocktails so even if not consuming alcohol one can look to play the part at the table and enjoy the flavor notes of a well made cocktail. The first meal we had was a bit of a work/get together meal. We ordered an assortment of items off of the menu and created a more tapas menu. The charcuterie board we picked the cheeses for and it was lovely. All as expected and quite surprised to find a cheddar I enjoyed. Came with some grapes, figs, nuts, honey and I think mustard. Glazed carrots were phenomenal. Heartily enjoyed the beet salad and thought the presentation was quite pretty. Lamb lettuce wraps are alright. Not my favorite of all the dishes served but delivered as promised, nicely cooked and presented. Spouse really liked the lamb wraps and were a stand out dish to them. Meatballs are excellent truly great texture and flavor. Escargot was a fun take on a classic dish. Finished with a unique strudel in its presentation it was quite pleasant. Spouse liked the peanut butter chocolate dessert. For brunch, I had the carrot ginger soup. Which I must say was a total delight. The soup had the hallmark texture and base flavor of the carrot ginger but it had a beautiful breath of savory and some heat seasoning wise to it. It was quite an elevated soup and heartily enjoyed! I followed the carrot soup with a French toast. I am all for softly scrambled eggs but the French toast was a touch undercooked. (I did not let the restaurant know or give them the chance to make right. I regularly eat soft boiled eggs and soft scrambled so I felt comfortable with consuming them.) Strawberries were ripe and tasty. The whipped cream was gorgeous in thickness and flavor. One in law had the caesar salad with croutons and grilled chicken. Their bowl was left clean so while they are not the talkative of sorts they did seem to enjoy it. Ordered a baguette with butter. Unfortunately the butter never made it to the table but the baguette was enjoyed. Spouse had the Azur burger with the side of tapas style potatoes. All was cooked properly to temperature and texture. Flavor and taste as promised. Wasn't their favorite dish at Azur as we had tried so many lovely dishes a few evenings before. But it did deliver on what was represented in the menu. Other in law had the quiche and a side salad. They liked the quiche and would order it again.

After sitting there another 10 min and not being acknowledged whatsoever, I got fed up. Stood up, told my girlfriend I had had enough...and I flat out refused to give my money to an establishment that treats their customers in this manner. Honestly, I grew up in the Lowcountry and I can tell you that *most* restaurants/bars/shops/etc. in Charleston feature employees who are generally gracious/friendly/hospitable/helpful. Then, on occasion, you run into places like this. How they stay in business has to be a function of location alone, because their service is absolutely horrible! Will advise anyone who will listen to avoid this place at all costs!
