I was served by Suzie, who was extremely attentive and very professional. She noticed that I was perspiring after my long walk, so she immediately brought me a glass of ice water. For an appetizer, Suzie recommended the Heirloom Tomato Salad, which complemented my entrée of Beef and Pork Ragu perfectly. For wine, Suzie suggested a glass of GLS Quilt Merlot. For dessert, as I am a chocoholic, I selected the Chocolate Addiction. The only negative was the bread. It was a bun with a taste of honey. Personally, I believe that a fine-dining restaurant should serve sliced French bread rather than a roll. We had an amazing experience at Peninsula Grill for a birthday celebration! The atmosphere in the restaurant was elegant and intimate, making it the perfect spot for a special occasion. We ordered the two-person seafood tower, and it was the perfect amount to share. It included shrimp, oysters, crab claws, and smoked trout dip, with the trout dip being my personal favorite. Since our group wasn't very hungry, we shared a variety of appetizers, sides, and desserts. Each dish was incredible and we left completely satisfied without feeling overly full. We were sat and ignored for a good 10-15 min. Then were asked about drinks that came about 20 minutes later. Between this we tried getting our waiters attention to put in some appetizers but were brushed off. When we finally did put our food order in he kept pressuring us to order more items which felt really odd. He promised some bread that never materialized although we would all have appreciated it as one of the appetizers was whipped ricotta and peas. All in all the service was atrocious. The appetizers we ended up with as a table were peas and whipped ricotta which was inventive but needed something to spread it on? It was awkward for sharing which is what it was recommended to us as. Then the corn "soufflé" was much too dense to use that name - it was nice tho and the bean salad it came on was very summery and light. The oysters were properly cleaned and good (imo it's hard to mess those up) Dinner consisted of two steaks and the lamb (because our server was very negative about the poulet rouge dish) the steak sauces were alright but very dense. The lamb was nice but the glaze served with it soaked into their cold grain salad leaving the lamb a bit dryer than expected because it had a very nice but very hard sear on it. The potatoes as a side were quite good but the broccolini was a total mess. As we could never get service we opted to not have dessert but have heard that their coconut cake is good? This may be one of the older restaurants in Charleston but it's still one of the best! We did a quick family trip to Charleston for the weekend and chose the Peninsula Grill for dinner on Saturday night. They delivered! The service was as professional as you would expect from this restaurant. The ambience is also fantastic because while the restaurant was crowded, it was never loud and we were able to have conversations throughout the evening. Our food was superb on every level. From the starters to the steaks that were cooked perfectly, every item was fantastic. And to finish the evening, we had to do their famous coconut cake. The great Peninsula Grill was not so great this Tuesday night. They were out of the Tomahawk for two and they were out of lobster tails. The reason provided was that it was immediately following Memorial Day. I guess if you're a 4 star restaurant, it only applies some of the time? The shrimp cocktail was mid at best. Fresh, but small. My wife ordered the ribeye as did I. Mine was cooked fine. Hers was under cooked and more raw than pink. When we mentioned it to our waiter, there was a distinct drop off in service. At the conclusion of our dinner, we asked for the famous 7 layer coconut cake. It was as great as advertised. However, we weren't offered coffee or tea service. It was like it was forgotten about completely. So, while our waiter was nice and service was good, it lacked at the end. All in, we've had much better food and service at other Charleston known 4 star restaurants. I'd place the Peninsula at the high end of 3 stars but definitely not an elite restaurant. I had (2) starters as my meal: Seared Foie Gras - Macadamia Bread, Smoked Pineapple Chutney, Macadamia Cinnamon butter, Pickled Pineapple and Minus 8 Vinegar Artisanal Greens Salad - Brown Butter Sweet Potato, Stilton Blue Cheese, Radish, Speck Ham, Toasted Pecan, Pomegranate Vinaigrette I did not imagine that I would find such bursts of flavor in this beautifully plated salad but I savored every bite. Simple, quality ingredients with a smear of sweet potatoes with a spattering of pomegranate seeds and stilton was delightful! The foie gras with the macadamia bread was rich and delectable. Paired with the sweetness of the macadamia bread and chutney and then the vinegar for another flavor profile was memorable. Dining on the patio in the garden with a slight breeze and the gas lit lanterns was wonderful and encouraged me to slow down a bit and just enjoy. We had dinner at Peninsula Grill recently for my mom's birthday. We are local to Charleston and have lived here our entire lives so we have frequented Peninsula Grill several times. We had good service and love the atmosphere, but 5 out of the 10 people in our group got food poisoning from the food. I called to let them know, and I have received no call back. It's disappointing to pay $2,000 for a meal and get sick from it. It's even worse when the restaurant doesn't care enough to call you back. The food has just gone downhill. My reviews often contain the phrase "price sets expectations". At just a few dollars shy of $300 for two people to eat (2 salads, 2 NY Strip steaks, 1 dessert, 3 drinks) BEFORE tip... We went on a Tuesday night and it was pretty full, but Ally the sommelier seated us immediately. Our server David was great and the ninja staff kept water full. Food came out with good timing. I had the artisanal greens salad, the girlfriend had the summer salad (it's not a menu item, it was a special). Both were amazing. We both went for the New York Strip steak, medium rare, and it was done perfectly, seasoned nicely so you could taste the meat, the steak sauce was good. Yukon whipped potatoes were amazing but the serving size was small just for one person, never mind sharing. Asparagus with béarnaise was on point and definitely shareable unless you both just love asparagus and could eat a pound each. Ultimate Coconut Cake did not disappoint either. Keep in mind, this is a VERY formal restaurant complete with dress code. They relax it a bit for the summer, but I wore slacks, nice shirt, dress shoes, and a jacket and I was NOT out of place. Is this my favorite Charleston steak house? No, I still think Burwell's is #1 so far. Is this a close #2? Yes, I think so. I do not understand why this place is rated so well. We ate in the garden, and that was lovely, though the inside is pretty stuffy and uninteresting. The food is not good. We had a shrimp special that was good as an appetizer, but the hen, scallops, she crab soup, pork chops, swordfish were all not good. Way over salted, scallops were undercooked, was a really expensive below avg meal. Service was decent, though they did bring my father the wrong drink and then suggest he in fact ordered wrong, which was weird. This is a very pretty space. It appears to be a professional staff but after the week In Charleston we agreed this was the most expensive, least enjoyable dinner. They were friendly enough but fell down on the little details, some positives- Hubby said scallops were good, she crab soup was very good. Salted butter with the bread was very good. And because it was our anniversary very did treat us to two macarons with a sweet message. Negatives I specifically asked for no anchovies and my salad came with a heaping 5 of them spread out all over the salad. Hubby had one drink and they never asked if he wanted another. My glass was half full for more than half of dinner. I ordered the filet medium, what came out was a charred, very slightly still pink, but still somehow only room temp dish that I can't even rate for flavor because (except for the sauce which made it edible) I could only taste the burnt. The root vegetable gratin had appealing flavor in the sauce but half of the vegetables were still this side of raw. They start with warm, sweet rolls as well as the amuse which was a potato chip with creme fraiche and caviar. We started with the Elevation 1 seafood tower which has 5 shrimp, 6 oysters and crab dip. We also added caviar bumps for $25. They were served on the cutest porcelain pillows and the portion was generous. We also had the famous she crab soup- definitely the best I've had in town. Especially when soaked up using their warm rolls. I had the short rib which is new to the menu- it melted in my mouth. I will say I recommend getting a steak even though this dish was done well you can't go wrong with a steak from here! We added a flight of sauces for $20- honestly so worth it to try all the house sauces. My favorite was the lobster sauce. In previous visits I had the lamb and the millionaire potato. My husband and I celebrated our Anniversary of 36 years here. We had the waygu duo which was supposedly prepared at medium/ medium for us. However, we both later became ill. While waiting for our dinner to be served, a male waiter spilled a pitcher of ice on the my backside. He apologized and quickly tried to clean all the ice off of my clothes.The maitre d came over to check on me as well and apologized. While I appreciate their apologies I never saw the manager to resolve this situation to it's complete resolution. The pants suit I was wearing sustained a water stain from the ice water that was dumped on it. I will have to pay $20 to dry clean it. This expense should have been addressed by the manager and it was not! Nor was there any complementary compensation for my dinner after having dealt with this very unpleasant experience! We had a terrible experience here over Labor Day weekend, and I feel obligated to warn others. My husband ordered the grouper, went straight back to our hotel and within 40 minutes of eating it, he became violently ill -- extreme vomiting, horrible cramping, chills, and weakness that lasted through the night and into the next day. My review starts at the end of the meal, so please take the time to review the only photo posted. My wife celebrates her birthday around Thanksgiving every year. This year we had a lifelong friend visit during the Thanksgiving holiday and decided to go to the grandly lauded Peninsula Grill. Nervous our guest might be hesitant about the food cost, we forwarded her the menu and she agreed it was a time to celebrate. Reservations made. In great anticipation we arrived about 20 minutes early but our table was waiting. We were seated and our server (Jessica) arrived shortly afterwards. Our collective pallet did not desire any pre-dinner drinks other than sweet tea and water (no ice for or friend). That was a poorly received request, but serviced with a smile (however, ice was floating in our friend's glass?). I asked an asst server to provide an "ice less glass" which he promptly provided. However, for the remainder of the meal, that glass for our guest to our grandly lauded hometown restaurant was filled repeatedly with ice water?! While placing our order, our guest decided against a 1st course, but instead advanced to her main, only to reminded REPEATEDLY, that it would certainly not be enough - after all, who could survive on a "standard 4oz serving " of Salmon alone? After my wife and I ordered, our guest finally acquiesced and added a bowl of She Crab Soup. I had a Caesar salad with a twist (saintly seasonal greens) which I thoroughly enjoyed, my wife has the She Crab soup as well. About 25minutes later (a bit delayed) I enjoyed a seared and roasted duck breast cooked medium and on spot! It was served over a wild mushroom risotto with a red wine Demi glaze, and I will tip my hat to the chef for that. Our guests had a magnificently large grilled salon (I'm guessing 2x the servers suggested portion if not larger), and my wife...the traditional high end steakhouse New York strip "requested Medium and provided almost Well. Our attempt to demonstrate the error to our server and request a new steak was met with "I'll be right back", which didn't happen. We resorted to calling the person we think was the dining room Manager. He was very apologetic and a new steak arrived with 5 minutes. It was appropriately cooked but with appetite seared, it was only marginally enjoyed. Our dessert course was limited to the famous Coconut Layer Cake, and it was delicious for sure. But it lost its luster when we arrived home to find our leftover meal packaged as if it truly was a "doggy bag"; which makes me wonder...it that what our Server really thought of us.? So we are full circle now, back to that packaging of our remaining meal (a $310+ meal , tip included). A premier restaurant on a premium night is justified in charging a premium price for such a premium meal. But a meal is more than the food set before you, it is the ambiance, the care in which it is handled both in the kitchen and at the table, and presentation is sometimes better than half the value. In this case, that half was sorely lacking. Will I return to the Peninsula Grill, I'm not sure, What I know for sure is that if this evening was a true representation of this establishment's usual level of service and culinary skill, I'll look elsewhere for what I know I can find better in this beautiful home of mine. read more

Shoutout to the host the evening i was there, who was also from the DMV region! Had a nice dining experience here before a show i attended. Firstly, GORGEOUS entrance to the hotel, then the ambiance inside was classy, clearly upscale but not gaudy or 'extra'. Came for the 'Lobster 3 Way', which included lobster tempura, 1 lobster ravioli, and a poached lobster claw. It is perfectly portioned as an appetizer (i thought portion would be larger, but thats ok, it gave me a chance to order a steak). Ordered the filet with blue cheese crust/topping- i only wanted the steak if they could do the blue cheese which wasnt on the menu so to my delight my waiter said they could do it.. and MAN was it a tasty steak. I did ask for medium and it came out well-done but i didnt have time to wait for another so i ate it and it was still VERY good.. they were kind enough to offer free dessert for the faux pas but again- didnt have time, so they agreed to comp one of my drinks. Next door to the Planters Inn, a high end, beautiful inn, is this wonderful restaurant which has been a great experience for any that could afford it, whether by saving up or being invited here by someone who really treasures you as a friend. Steele chardonnay was $13 a glass, but was a delightful, smooth wine, chilled to perfection. Then the she crab soup for me. The crab was in the bowl but to the side, under a number of bean sprouts. Unusual, yes. Blending in the crab also blended in the bean sprouts, such that you end up having almost to chew the soup because of the sprouts. Delicious soup but missing the usual drizzle of sherry on the surface as so many other restaurants in Charleston serve with such soup. Thus, unfettered by alcohol you can enjoy the care that goes into making the tastiness of it. The main course for me was an 18 ounce double cut pork chop. (See the photo.) I asked whether or not this large meat serving was bone in. I was told that it was but unfortunately I was thinking (my bad) of the bone being more like a T-bone steak and thus I thought maybe I could handle an 18 ounce pork chop. It came out and there was indeed a bone but it was merely on the side of it, a smallish curved piece of bone. Thus the challenge was on for me to finish it. The meat was cooked to perfection moist and almost to the point that you thought it would melt in your mouth. I had thought about ordering one of their multiple steaks which they have on the menu but when I go back if they have this pork chop, it definitely will be what I order. Due to the size of this meat dish I unfortunately ordered asparagus with a bearnaise sauce. Not that it was bad by any means and you could tell that it was a fresh in-house made bearnaise sauce with quite tender and slender lengthy asparagus. My problem was finishing that delicious side ($10) due to the large pork chop. I did my best. Although we had decided that there was no way we could have one of their famous slices of coconut cake which frankly is known and loved all throughout the United States, and thus we told our delightfully helpful, there when we needed wait staff Michelle. Still, out came our light, but delightful, (and gratis) dessert in celebration of our anniversary, as the photo shows. The service and the atmosphere were wonderful. Definitely an elegant southern charm about the place. I got the Japanese Wagyu steak. The plating and presentation were exceptional. However, the steak was a bit over salted. It created a nice crust, but distracted from the flavor of the meat. Also, it was a bit chewy, which was surprising. I have had Japanese Wagyu beef before, And this definitely was not nearly as tender. read more

Somewhat Disappointing Came here for a 7:30pm seating when the dining room was pretty full. Consequently, due to the restaurant's poor acoustics, it was VERY loud and difficult hearing the waiter unless he leaned in and raised his voice. If you think the loudness might bother you, ask to be seated at one of the tables near the bar, which is in sort of an ante-room to the main restaurant. Here's what we ordered, and how I'd rate everything on a scale of 1 - 10 (10 being best): Lobster "3 Way" Lobster Ravioli, Lobster Tempura and Sautéed Lobster (4): The ravioli was OK, the sautéed lobster was dry, and the tempura was unimpressive. Also, the tangy-tomatoey sauce just clashed with the flavor of the lobster. She Crab Soup (9): Very good bisque with good texture. Pan Seared Diver Scallops (10): Quite possibly the best scallops we've ever had. Moist, flavorful, and very satisfying. Roasted "Charleston" Rack of Lamb (7): They serve very little lamb in this dish and it's not seasoned very well, though it is cooked tender. Yukon Gold Whipped Potatoes (8): We shared this as a side dish and it was very good, though I would've preferred it to have more of a garlic flavor. The Ultimate Coconut Cake (10): Lives up to the hype! Definitely the best coconut cake we've ever had. All that + tip came out to $250, without any alcohol. A bit overpriced IMHO.
