We've enjoyed dining at Opal for over 10 years, but our recent visit was not nearly as good as before. We had reservations for a Saturday night and arrived to a normally full restaurant. Immediately though we noticed there were only 2 main servers taking care of all the tables. We were also told both servers would be taking care of us. This comment was the forewarning. We enjoyed many items we ordered like the veal meatballs, soup of the day, local fish. But my favorite item, the bolognese, was off. It was very plain, and lacked flavor. Just as we suspected the service was minimal and not as engaging as before. The starter and salad was served simultaneously, then a large gap of time before the entrees arrived. This was a definite off night. But it was Saturday night, and they should have been fully staffed for this business. Unfortunately, this experience left us doubting a future return. read more

Great food great service one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston / mount pleasant area worth a 2.5 hr drive !

It was my wife's Birthday weekend so I decided to take her to dinner and a movie. Looked up Opal's Restaurant and this place did not disappoint. Very nice atmosphere with attentive service. Started off with an Appletini for the wife, and I had a grapefruit margarita. Both were very good. Then on to the Strawberry and arugula salad, spicy shrimp bruschetta and veal and ricotta meatballs. All were fresh and sauces were very tasty. Could have stopped there, but no. My wife had the lemon crème brûlée and it was exquisite and creamy with a great char. I had the bone in pork chop with bacon fused gnocchi and Brussels sprouts. Let me tell you...THAT WAS THE BEST PORK CHOP I have ever had, bar none. Kudos to the chef a thousand fold. Absolutely delightful venue and great service. We enjoyed it so much that given its proximity to where we are staying, we ended up at Opal twice in two days. The food is well prepared. The steaks, seafood and salads are excellent. The cocktails are made well. The wines by the glass seemed a bit overpriced for the market. The mozzarella and prosciutto appetizer is incredibly delicious. The mashers have mascarpone cheese whipped into them, and they are hard not to finish even when you are already full! The only disappointment is the level of added salt to the pastas and soups. Given that it is an "Italian" restaurant, the pasta was a major disappointment. Stick to the proteins as they are well made and everyone enjoyed them. read more

I was excited to try this place because i absolutely love one of its sister restaurants. The service was very slow and forgetful. Table of four had reserved a booth but someone forgot to put that in the reservation. The staff was quick to point out the error was on a fellow worker. Took quite a while to get served a bottle of wine and a couple of cocktails. One request was quickly overlooked. Food was good not great. The shrimp bisque had a brownish color to it with a heavy shrimp stock flavor overpowering the bisque. I'd definitely not order that again. There wasn't much of a creamy texture to it. Overall bland. , there was a fish special ordered along with the scallop app special a steak and pasta special. Everything seemed heavy handed on the salt. The steak was cooked perfectly but swimming in a gravy/sauce that was unnecessary. Over all. I don't think we will return anytime soon. read more

It's been a minute! We hit Opal last for girls night on a weeknight and enjoyed dinner in the dining room. Our service was very friendly but quite sparse as the meal went on- flagged down a couple times for more drinks and the check. Bread came out after appetizers which was a little weird. The dining room hasn't changed in 15 years so it's looking a bit dated now- nothing awful. Charcuterie board was tasty- small (tiny, actually) portions of cheese but still fresh. The salad greens were a bit old (brown) but well dressed and tasty. Good in a pinch, esp since Mount Pleasant food scene is rough. My dining partners said the gnocchi was incredible so I clearly need to try that next time!! read more

We got the shrimp bruschetta, which was very good! The bread they start you out with is classic and delicious. We got the tagliatelle bolognese and the truffle and mushroom pappardelle. Both were pretty good :) our service was great. We had Stacy. They offer fresh ground pepper for every dish. We didn't order any cocktails but they didn't look super upscale- just traditional offerings with traditional garnish. Overall pretty nice! read more

Always amazing service and food. The staff is incredibly friendly and professional. Some have been there over a decade and I see why. The food is consistent and delicious, and the bar has a great atmosphere whenever I want a place to congregate. Personally, I believe the steaks are even better than Halls (and at a better value). The food was outstanding. The martini was even better than that deep and cold. The service was good although they did seem a little overwhelmed the ambience was loud and hot. I guess that's what you get when there's a good crowd, but a little air would've been appreciated hard to get it right in South Carolina Winter, though it was definitely a good meal and we'll be back. read more

Unfortunately never got a chance to eat it. 3 hour dinner service and by the time our meals showed up I was full of bread and water. Ended up canceling my dinner. Most everyone ate but took hours seriously. We left with nearly a already nearly empty restaurant. Honestly I was pleasantly surprised, I was putting this place off cause I thought it would just be ok but it was excellent. Started with the garlic clams and it was delicious, I prefer clams to mussels so I was glad to see it on the menu. I could have had 3 bowls of the clams and would have been happy. For dinner I had the daily catch which was tile fish and the pirlou which is a rice mixture with jumbo lump crab, this dish was delicious. The tile fish was perfectly cooked. It's a light dish perfect for someone who doesn't want to over indulge l. Hubby had the center cut filet cooked rare and it was cooked to the perfect temp. The crust of the filet was out of bounds. Dinner reservations set with some of my favorite Yelp friends, so I made my way over the bridge to meet Kat, Michael, and Alan for a fabulous time at Opal. This was a few months back, so I was just shocked when I discovered I had not written this yet. Here goes. It seems like something was going on in town the weekend we made reservations, I know, shocking for CHS! The point is, we had late evening reservations. The four of us were seated at one of the large booths. Plenty of room for more people or stretching out if need be. We started off with cocktails and a charcuterie board. I had spied the menu before arriving so I was good with the gin specialty cocktail and any of the meat and cheeses. The name escapes me now for this first drink, but I remember it being delicious. And so was every cheese off the board along with my favorite meat, the smoked duck ham. Could go back right now just for the board and cocktail and be thrilled. But we didn't stop there. For my entree I went for the ricotta gnocchi and lamb ragu. It was by far one of the best prepared meals that I started 2019 off with. The rich flavor, balanced out with bits of pistachio and celeriac was perfect. The leftovers re-heated and were delicious for two more days. That was a sad day when it was all gone! Not being a sweet tooth dessert girl, I opted for one more cocktail. And if you're like me and want to end the meal strong at Opal, order the Sunset Over Sullivan's. Knob Creek, pomegranate liqueur, and fresh lemon. Simple perfection. If you live in Mt. P, or just want a fabulous dinner away from the downtown scene, spend an evening at Opal. My sister and brother-in-law were in town and we wanted to take them out some place nice in Mount Pleasant. We loved Langdon's and wanted to check out its sister restaurant. We were not let down; this place is great! We started off with some charcuterie and cheese which was quite nice. We ordered 5 items (3 cheese and 2 meats) in it which was more than enough for 4 people. It came with toasted bread, honey, mustards, a few olives and a small arugula salad. I had a Porch Swing cocktail with dinner which was a really nice light cucumber vodka drink. For dinner I had the chicken which was excellently cooked. The Brussels Sprouts and potatoes were phenomenal- I would gladly order the chicken again. My fiancé had the salmon with feta orzo salad. She loved it, said it was perfectly cooked, had just the right level of char, and the sprinkle of preserved lemon peels on top really pushed it over the top. The feta orzo salad was the surprise winner though - none of us expected much from it but it was absolutely delicious. She ate every bite. read more

We just sold our condo in Marais. My husband and I love Basil and I especially love Opal for their Tagliatelle Bolognese with the lemon ricotta. We are down here for our last time removing our personal belongings since we sold our condo furnished. My husband decided on Basil as his last meal until we can come back in our motor coach. I absolutely wanted Opal. I called his food in and then mine....i was told I can't call food in but I could come in and sit down to order, then I would obvi need to box my food so my husband and I could eat our food together, in our condo, for our last night here. I thought "maybe knowing the circumstances, they might be able to make my pasta so I don't have to go in (I'm in a Comfrt set, no makeup, hair barely brushed on account of moving out all day) but to no avail. I haven't been this disappointed since..idk when. I may be a tad dramatic right now but I've been looking forward to this meal for months. Since the day we found out our closing date. I'm not saying to not go there. Go. The food is great. I'm just saying I really wish I had the tagliatelle bolognese instead of the shrimp fried rice that tastes like gas from Basil. read more

We just finished a New Year's Eve meal at Opal. I am gluten free and made a very specific order for dinner--nothing fancy. I had their fresh fish and brussel sprouts. How hard is it to not get that right? They were not that busy with other open tables around. When everyone's meal arrived, it was correct except mine. She took it back and I waited another twenty minutes for mine to arrive; however burned at that. There was no apology and nothing taken off of our meal. It will be a cold day in you know where before I ever grace this establishment again. I have eaten at many high-end places and can say I have never been treated this way. read more

I'm writing this review without having actually eaten there because we essentially weren't allowed to dine. I was looking forward to a date night after a long week and a friend had suggested this spot. Being the planner that I am, I took a look at the menu and saw that they had happy hour oysters and I immediately couldn't wait to try this spot. We arrived around 5:15 to find that the happy hour was only at the bar. Okay- this is common in some places so not a big deal. The bar was packed full although there was a 4 top with only two folks seated, however they were seated such that we weren't able to share the table. And no efforts were made to rearrange them by the staff citing Covid friendly dining. I'm sorry- everyone is sitting indoors in a poor ventilated place & unmasked. Covid restrictions are a joke at that point but I digress. We were told that we would have to wait for a spot to open. The dining room was essentially empty so we asked if we could just sit there instead and eat dinner. The response was that we would be seated at 9:30 as that was the next available reservation. No seats available for patrons stopping by. And no regard given to the time and that we could be finished with our meal by some of their later reservations. We walked out. I'm sure they are "busy" enough to not worry about losing a customer but this is unacceptable service. I want to emphasize that this is an upper management issue. The staff is simply following what they are asked to do by their bosses. I've eaten at a robust number of places across the city- this was poor service to a new degree. Opal may not care about losing my business but I will certainly not recommend this establishment to friends and family looking for a local spot. read more

My husband and I were told by a few acquaintances that we should try Opal. We arrived to a very nice ambiance, the staff was very friendly and attentive. We ordered the spicey shrimp which was good and I would recommend. For our main course my husband ordered the pan seared duck breast and I ordered the cavatelli with the veal meatballs. Unfortunately, neither one of us enjoyed our meals. The duck had no flavor,not sure there was any sort of seasoning. When I ordered the cavatelli I was expecting a spaghetti and meatball platter, instead I received a big bowl (portion was very good) of pasta drowned in a soupy sauce and small veal meatballs There was way too much sauce and it pouring over the side of my plate. Had it been delicious, I would not have mind, but again it was lacking. I wish I would have liked the food as it came highly recommended and just hope maybe I went on an off night. The fish special was tile fish which two people tried and both enjoyed. The mushroom pappardelle was enough for two people and very flavorful. My NY strip was cooked to perfection. The ambience is great, the service was excellent, and the food was delicious. I had the salmon and the crust and spices used by the chef were perfectly balanced and delicious. It sat on a chilled salad with a variety of items that really complimented the meal. However the other two entrees I tasted were the filet and the pork chop. OMG. They were huge with a sauce on top that was over the moon. Although the menu is not large, these three entrees were fantastic. One of our party of 11 ordered the chicken and he raved about that as well. Definitely a must stop. read more
