The tl;dr is four stars for food/quality of food, but three stars overall due to experience and pacing: Service: Full disclosure that we came on a Saturday after the snowstorm on Tuesday night. I don't know if folks called out, but in general while everyone was lovely, it felt like they were overwhelmed. This is not a small restaurant and I counted at least 3 large parties (6+). It felt like we had two people helping us at times with long gaps in between. There was no wiping down of the table or freshening up of plates, and to be honest, I think it's just because there was too much going on and not enough staff. Pacing: We ordered the sourdough bread, oyster mushrooms, roasted carrots, loaded sweet potatoes, and Spaghetti & Crab with all plates being shared. The meal started as expected with drinks and bread coming out fairly soon after our initial order. Then, the mushrooms came out, and before we really were able to finish that dish, the carrots and spaghetti arrived at the same time. We finished those dishes and then some time later our server checked in to see if we'd gotten everything (we hadn't gotten the sweet potatoes). He apologized and comped those for us which was very nice, but the wait to get them ended up being oddly long (hence the comment about them being understaffed). There was a similar situation with our drinks - a refill was noted, but then it felt slipped through the cracks, and then it looked like it came twofold but the meal was basically over. Food: Everything we had was good, but I've learned that the bar in Charleston is high, and would say the meal was good but not great. These dishes weren't as creative as Sorghum & Salt's, and the flavors weren't as delicate as some of what we experienced at The Ordinary. The Grocery delivers a high quality dinner with fresh ingredients but, for me, there was nothing that signaled to me I needed to come back to try something else. The Grocery has the potential to be really great, and while my experience may have been a blip, as an out of towner I doubt I'd make it a priority to go back if I return to Charleston in the future.

Kinda a sleeper hit! This was our first dinner in town and upon entering, it was pretty quiet. I wasn't sure if that was an indication of the food or the looming storm. Luckily, I think the storm was what held people back as the food really shined! The tomato water martini was the most amazing riff on a dirty martini - probably my fav drink in the city. The cornmeal fried oysters with the pickling element was wow! So good and brought the briny salty to the cornmeal clad oyster. Green tomato carpaccio - wow wasn't expecting to love this one so much. I loved my lemon and crab pasta. Delicate, bright, and just that perfect dish to round out a nice final "summer" moment before we dive into Fall flavors. Excellent meal and would highly recommend, plus, also venture back.

Dinner at The Grocery. Aftering trying their sister restaurant Lola Rose-we were told they make Gluten Free pasta on site. Had to try! Unfortunately, they were all out of it when we got there. I opted for the Whole Fish (tilefish) and they even filleted it for me. It was very good. Justin and Emma (haha i know - she graced us with her presence) had the Paella, filled with rice, shrimp, clams and crispy fish. Needed more rice but they did like it. All paired with an excellent Cab-if you've never tried this one-put it on your list.

A comfortable yet refined rustic atmosphere, excellent service for dinner at the bar, and outstanding food created by a talented chef. My pork agnolotti was tasty, and the peanut butter bar with pretzel crumble was a large decadent serving. There's a nice selection of wine by the glass, Amaro, and Bourbon among other choices including mocktails made to order.

I really enjoyed the Easter brunch for my birthday! The food was great! I loved their fried green tomatoes which I didn't get a pic of! I ordered the eggs Benny that they put on top of biscuits, instead of an English muffin! I wasn't the biggest fan of my drink, strawberry limoncello spritz, but the food was great. The crudo kind of reminded me of a poke bowl, but it tasted great! They even gave us complimentary churros with a birthday candle! Great place! I'd love to try their proper menu one day!

This was my first time dining at the Grocery! I really enjoyed my experience overall. We came for my mom's birthday dinner and had about ten people so I got to try a little bit of everything. Their food is GOOD. I wasn't expecting this because I never hear much about this place! The appetizer of bread and butter was some of the tastiest bread I've had in a bit. I ordered the Spaghetti Crab which had a nice lemony taste and I loved that it was a thinner angel hair pasta. The tuna crudo was pretty good. I'd say my favorite thing I tried was the mushroom bolognese! I enjoy things that burst with flavor and this was that. The one thing I'd point out is that everything that wasn't a pasta dish had a pretty small portion of food. The service was great I had no complaints! I also felt really comfortable in the casual but upscale vibe they have curated in there.

Embarrassingly I admit I saw "Grocery" on the map and thought it was a grocery store. It wasn't until I walked past it one night I saw it was a restaurant that I realized the error of my ways and made a point to dine here. I walked over on a sleepy weekday night, rather early in the evening before dinner rush, and was greeted and seated immediately. I sat at the bar nearest the windows so I could watch the fire truck leave and return. There was one other lady at the bar and eventually a couple came in as well, but it was a relatively quiet night. The ambiance is not much to speak of. Lots of wood tones and standard diner vibe. What they lacked in visual appeal they made up for in service and food. The bartender was charming. He was easy to talk with, made great drinks and great recommendations, and was a legit joy to be around. Truly. The food also was very good. I ordered the Keegan-Filion Pork 'Milanese' - and I was quite impressed. It was very tender, nice and savory, and the tzatziki gave it a refreshing pop. I really enjoyed it!

Probably one of the best meals I had the entire time I was working in Charleston. All of the dishes were inventive dishes that utilize local produce. It has an open kitchen and a wood-fired oven, enhancing both the ambiance and flavors. Pro tip - go for Happy hour. Their standard drinks are only $5 and incredible and a lot of their veggie & pasta dishes are discounted which is what we would have gotten anyways Yes on a busy street /some what touristy but highly highly recommend checking it out

The Grocery team recently put together a bachelorette weekend dinner for our group of 9 and couldn't have made the evening more special! Coordinating with their events team from the start was a pleasure, and night of, our service was exceptional. Welcoming, warm and attentive from start to finish. We started with several small plates to share. The sweet potato steak fries were a crowd pleaser, with a restrained amount of seasoning so as not to mask the sweet potatoes themselves, and the whipped feta providing a creamy, salty balance. They could have been cooked just a bit longer for a more tender texture, but overall a solid dish. The BBQ glazed squash was another successful shareable bite. The romesco is bright and packs a punch when combined with the acidity of the pepperocini. The pepitas lend that little bit of crunch, and the cojita that salty element. The crudo was also enjoyed by all--mouth wateringly fresh, light and citrus forward. Top marks went to the roasted cauliflower though--what a stunner! Roasted to delicate perfection, the cauliflower is elevated by tahini yogurt and complex spice profile of the pistachio dukkah, with the shallots bringing a pop of vinegar. I had the mushroom campanelle for my main and was very satisfied with my selection. The pasta was al dente on the mark, bathed in a rich but not heavy umami conserva. The asparagus gives the dish a crisp textural pop in addition to the crunchy hazelnuts, while the green garlic adds complexity to the bite and the Parmesan and added salty element. At the conclusion of our meal, the team brought out two orders of churros on the house! Arguably the best churro I've had in recent past--delicate yet fried to a thin layer of crispy perfection, with a light sugar dusting and complete with three delicious dipping sauces. Thank you again for an exceptional meal, Grocery team!

The food was spectacularly good, from the appetizer, salad, entrees and dessert. It was a prix fixe menu that was set up for our group dinner. We were in a side room, it was cozy, to say the least, but comfortable to enjoy our dinner. Only thing is conversations are hard to hear unless you get up close. But the service was top notch. Each wait person knew everything about the menu, and even made recommendations for wine pairings. Highly recommend.

7 years later and I'm less impressed. The food is good but not great and not great enough for the prices. The restaurant is beautiful, cozy and trendy. Aside from that, is struggle to understand their following. First, the wine menu is disappointing. They have very few choices and most only by the bottle. Second, the food menu does not have a variety of offerings and what they do have is overpriced. The seafood pilau was $38 with only 2 shrimp and 3 clams. The double portion was $69. I was disappointed that the dish was not very flavorful. Our waitress was attentive, but was not able to split our check by what we ordered. She said that their computer would not allow her to split the checks four ways based on what we ordered. Though I like the ambiance, I don't plan on returning.

This is a wonderful farm to table restaurant in downtown Charleston. The first time I came here for a date night and the second time I came here for happy hour with a group of friends. My favorite items on the menu are in the produce section - mushroom dishes, squash, cauliflower, gnocchi, beats and salad. These are absolutely delicious with my favorite being the mushroom dishes and the gnocchi. The best part is that these are half off on happy hour which is such a great deal. For drinks - I'd recommend the fried green tomato martini and the ruby slipper. These are on the happy hour menu as well. The fried green tomato martini is such a unique drink and the tomato adds a nice sweetness. The ruby slipper is tequila based and very refreshing. Service wise - I had great service during happy hour but was not as impressed with the service when I was here for a date night. For happy hour service is limited to the bar and the bartender was very attentive. During date night we often had to ask to order a cocktail or for menus during the dinner service. Despite this experience I'm still giving it 5 starts though due to the great happy hour experience and the freshness of the produce dishes.

They take reservations so make sure to book if you have a large party! Very nice and minimalistic decorations inside. I got the Bistro Streak. It had Potato Gratin and Brandy Sauce with it. The steak was great! It was cooked to the way I like it and with the brandy sauce everything tasted great. My favorite was definitely the potato gratin. If that is a side I would definitely order just that! I would say the dish taste great, but for the price of $39 with 6 slices of beef and one block of potato gratin, I would say it is on the pricier side. We got bread which was good and warm and it was $5. The service was great! We had a large group and we got our waters refilled constantly and they definitely took care of us even though they were busy!

There's no traditional menu, instead, he takes the time to learn what you like and crafts drinks based on your taste. I've never experienced anything like that before. The level of knowledge and creativity behind the bar was incredible. Every drink he made was stunning and tasted even better than it looked. I was honestly so impressed that I couldn't even remember all the ingredients he mentioned because I was too busy being amazed at how good everything was. It was one of those moments where you realize there are real levels to this craft. I walked in thinking I knew a thing or two about mixing drinks at home, and left with a whole new respect for the art of it. The atmosphere, the personal attention, and the quality of the cocktails made this place feel truly top tier. Huge shoutout to the bartender, easily a 15 out of 10. But you can also make reservations (or try to get lucky walking in) at the Annex. The Annex is their weekends-only cocktail experience in the back of Last Saint. You walk to the back of the bar and press ring the bell by the yellow door. Someone answers and seats at one of six seats at the bar and three small (but private) tables. The Annex is a no-menu experience. The friendly and creative staff ask you questions about your preferences for drinks and then make you something that fits the bill. It was personal and fun, and we enjoyed all the drinks we had. A reservation at the Annex is good for a 1.5 hour time frame, which was perfect for us to have two drinks before closing out and heading to our dinner reservation. We sat at the bar, which I loved, because we got to chat with the staff and watch them make our and others' drinks while we enjoyed our creative cocktails. The staff have a wide knowledge of cocktails and an almost endless supply of ingredients to choose from when making your drinks. A truly fun experience. One I haven't had in any other city. The Buddy the Elf Burger offers a choice of a single or double patty; ours was cooked perfectly. The smoky bacon really brought everything together and gave it that extra "wow" factor. Of course, we had to order the Pommes Frites to go with the sliders and they arrived super crispy with a nice rosemary-lemon aioli for dipping. The grand finale was the Boeuf En Croute which was their play on a beef wellington. The filet was a nice medium rare with a flaky pastry crust and a delicious sauce bordelaise. A great way to finished. With its beautiful decor, great service and good food I would highly recommend this place for any date night!

my friend had the reservation for la cave for about two months now, it was for her birthday. The…read moreday before the reservation, she was called and said that the reservation was canceled. We thankfully got it fixed but when we showed up at the door, they asked for our IDs and we had to wait 10 minutes after our reservation to be seated. we were never informed that it was 21+, it doesn't even specify on the website. And result of this we had to be given wristbands before even entering the restaurant. when we finally entered the restaurant, we were happily guided to a beautiful table. the service was perfect. we got fries for the table and our food came out pretty fast. i got the salad which was okay, it had a interesting vinaigrette but i added lemon which really made it better. i tried my friends slider and it was delicious. the food and service saved this review. the place was gorgeous, i recommend!

The staff are…read morealways the best && I love sitting at the oyster bar and watching the guys chuck all the oysters while we're chatting and sipping champagne. The lobster rolls is delicious, the fires yummy, the seafood exceptional. Everything is fresh and you do not leave hungry. Inside is traditional coastal flare with beautiful tiles and decorations. There is a pay to park right behind the restaurant and usually where we park when coming here. We just love coming here!

Asked the bartender what would be good and he suggested the Creole shrimp. That sounded good and I've learned that you generally can't go wrong going with bartenders' recommendations. Anyway, they came out and they were WAY overcooked. They were like rubber and the seasoning was NOT on point. Honestly, I make Creole / bbq shrimp at home and they're always MUCH better than what I got at The Darling. The service (with the exception of the lousy recommendation) was decent enough. If I ever go back, I'll probably stick with oysters on the half shell. (Sorry no pic. I actually took one that day, but subsequently deleted it because it was so bad.)
