By the way, I've never heard of "By the Way" ... see what I did there?? lol One of my girlfriends celebrated her bday here and although I rarely come back downtown on the weekend, I wouldn't have missed her celebration for the world. Free parking on the street is of course, scarce but there is a paid parking lot nearby. Downtown as a whole, needs more accessible parking anywho. Upon walking inside, it's really cute and reminds me of the classier, bougie big sister of a neighborhood bar. Some of the servers were helpful, some not so much. We had a great table right slab dab in middle of the restaurant. There weren't too choices to choose from as a gluten-free girlie but the summer salad with grilled chicken was pretty tasty. The steak frites was delicious and very good portion size for the price too. And the little jar of ketchup they served on the side was so cute! I don't know why but that was such a great little extra touch.. However, the place is narrow and crowded. Everyone stands around the bar but it's not large enough to accommodate that so then many people standing are backed up right in front of seated guests dining staring at their butts lol. Ironically the bathrooms were super large and spacious though. I'd come back for lunch perhaps because the food truly is delicious, when hopefully not as crowded instead of an evening experience here personally... Ps. Like many, my love for Southern Charm led me here. It's a cool spot! The decor is unique and fun. We only stopped in for a drink and an app. We had the Grilled Onion Dip which was bomb, and I had the Hot Honey Margarita. It was also tasty! I think the menu could use a few more options, but what they do offer allows for a wide range of palates. This was one of the reasons we opted for an app and drink. It's definitely different than other places in the area. I do agree with other reviewers that it's a bit crowded and small inside for a typical dinner spot. Our server, Emily, was wonderful, though! Stopped by By The Way for drinks and just tried the espresso martinis. Overall they were pretty good and the actual drink itself was smooth, but whatever they used for the markings/design on top was honestly not good at all. It had a very sour taste that kind of threw off the drink. The space itself is really pretty inside and has a nice upscale vibe. The bartender we had was also very friendly and welcoming. One downside though -- my sister-in-law went to use the restroom and there was someone in the stall next to her getting sick, which obviously wasn't the best experience and definitely changed the vibe a little. So I didn't know when my wife made reservations but I guess this places is owned by some local TV celebrities. We had reservations so we were seated immediately and our waitress was prompt in coming to get drink and appetizer orders. We had the hummus and the meatballs and both were very good. After a bit the waitress showed back up and took our dinner order. We both ordered the Steak Frites. I was mainly just looking for protein. The fries were really good. Crisp yet still soft so almost perfect. The steak, not so great. I understand it was a sirloin but it had absolutely no flavor. It could have really used some kind of seasoning. I would have asked for some salt and pepper but the waitress kind of disappeared. For cocktails I had the margaritas which was very good, my wife had a couple different drinks. The first one was good. The second was on a card on the table and it was their Special. Not sure if the bartender didn't know how to make it, but it wasn't balanced and really had an off putting flavor. The place had a trendy feel to it, I did find it odd that the had a bouncer at the door, but that's not here nor there. Overall it was a good experience, a couple of misses that can be fixed. If you are wanting the celebrity owned restaurant experience you should go, but I'm not into that, and there are a lot of other restaurants in the area with amazing food. read more

By The Way has been on our list to visit for quite sometime. After attending an event on King Street, we walked and were sat at one of the high top tables run by the bar. I ordered an extra dirty gin martini and one of my friends ordered an extra dirty vodka martini. As you can see by the photos they weren't dirty at all. They were straight gin and vodka with a splash of olive juice. So there is one less star for that. We ordered fries, the duck confit deviled eggs with red pepper and the stuffed ravioli and they were great!! Everything had explosive flavoring (fries included) and I was pleasantly surprised. Prices are reasonable for Charleston and their overall menu looks great. I'm def looking forward to coming back for dinner and brunch. Once the place fills up (and it was packed when we went) it does get a bit loud. I made a reservation and when we arrived, we were greeted and sat immediately and had the cutest, personalized message at our table which was a nice touch to make us feel welcome by the team. Our server was over quickly and gave us time to peruse the menu. We ordered Espresso Martinis to start (duh) and a few appetizers to follow which included the Ceviche and Deviled Eggs. Both were perfect for the light lunch we were going for. However, the only downside was that the tortilla chips for the Ceviche were slightly stale. The Ceviche also could have been improved by a touch of sliced or diced avocado to balance the acidity but overall, we were happy with the start to our meal! For the main course, we split the Fried Chicken Sandwich and it was not just good, it was great. I also tried the Tomatotini and my husband had another cocktail (although I don't recall the name). We enjoyed those, but preferred the Espresso Martini we enjoyed first. We followed our second round by splitting a TropHop (when in Rome!) All of the team members we encountered, either up close or from afar were pleasant and friendly. We felt welcome and enjoyed our time dining at By The Way. What a surprise! Leaving the Tiny Tassel after a Yelp Elite Event, we saw BTW across the street. Looking like a lovely French bistro, and with a solid recommendation for the Duck Confit sandwich, we decided to enter. Lovely decor, in a somewhat art Deco style, with some beats music playing (I imagine lights go down and music goes up as the evening goes on). We split the Duck Confit sandwich, and it was as good as we were told. Along with a side of frites, the sandwich was dressed with arugula and goat cheese, with a baguette that was perfectly crispy. We stopped by after a fantastic dinner at Bistronomy to have a drink at the bar. The service at the bar was subpar, drinks over priced and ambiance plain. The food prices were outrageous compared to where we just came from. The bar decoration and woodwork is lovely but the rest of the place is basic. BTW has become one of my favorite spots. The menu is small but jam-packed with flavor. There's a beautiful bar that offers phenomenal drinks. I really love the Hugo Sprits. As far as food favorites for me, it's a tough battle between the mushroom ravioli and the steak. Did I mention there's a Wednesday special for 1/2 price steaks?! I love all the pictures on the wall and the bar is fully stocked to make all your favorites or new favorites recommended by the server. We got the fried oysters with caviar on top and it was fried to perfection and the caviar was the perfect topper. The espresso Martini was smooth and not too heavy on the coffee. Last was the duck confit sandwich. After speaking to the chef I see why it's on the menu is full of flavor and you get a mouth full of duck in each bite. The vibe is fun and sociable.
