Very good experience but not great. If I could do 4.5 I would. I'd been before but not in a while. I think it loses a star for the steak not being top notch. I've had much better steaks at other high end steak houses (in other cities). Burrata, Mac and cheese, corn were all very good. Bread was a highlight. Service was very attentive and nice. My other small negative is your experience partly depends on where you sit. If you want intimate, sit upstairs. If you want more lively steakhouse, sit downstairs. If one eats brunch there on Sundays one must acknowledge that the food is good. Not "the best ever!" But good. The service however, is always exceptional regardless of which meal you eat here. What is intolerable is every Sunday is having to listen to the "Plantation Singers" torture us with LOUD gospel music. Every Sunday. Always too LOUD! The Halls' Sunday brunch is a tourist destination and having gospel music screaming in everyone's ears is a contrived creation by old Mr. Hall because for some inexplicable reason, he thinks that everyone enjoys LOUD gospel music while trying to eat a peaceful breakfast! Hall's Chophouse is one of those family-run places that seems to have been around forever and was highly recommended by our friends. My husband's name happens to be Billy Hall too, so we figured we had to check it out. We walked in and asked to be put on the waitlist for seats at the back bar. Even while we were waiting, the bartenders came by multiple times to check on us and brought us drinks while we stood along the wall. Then the owner, Billy Hall himself came over, shook our hands, and welcomed us. I absolutely love that kind of old-school customer service, it feels rare these days. The vibe was classic steakhouse: classy, lively without feeling pretentious. The drinks were strong, well made, and exactly what we were looking for. Once we got seats at the bar, we ordered the bison nachos and the steak martini as a snack. Both were so delicious. The nachos were loaded with flavor but somehow still stayed crispy and never got soggy. I was honestly in heaven eating them. Great people-watching, attentive bartenders, excellent service, and a fun atmosphere. We had such a great time here and can see why it's been a Charleston favorite for so long. read more

The service is excellent. Everybody wished us a congratulations on graduating and made it a welcoming ambiance. I got the tuna tartare to start, which was very fresh with the right touch of acidity. The tomahawk was cooked to a perfect medium rare with a nice red wine sauce (you can skip this if you want), and the flavor and seasoning was on point. The lobster Mac was creamy and had the right amount of lobster, the loaded mash potatoes were textbook, and the Brussels sprouts were the best I've ever had. I love Halls. Food and service seriously can't be beat. It's an A+ meal every single time and for every single dish. The employees are all beyond nice. Need to use the restroom? They'll make way and lead you to where the restroom is located. Dropped your napkin? They'll bring you a fresh and folded napkin without you even asking. Ordered the stuffed mushrooms, ceasar salad, halls chopped salad, fried calamari, she-crab soup, pork chops, Special wagyu, filet mignon, rib eye, chocolate cake, and cookie skillet. Yes, Yes, Yes! From the greeting to bringing the check, all staff were outstanding. The owner came in and introduced himself as we were sitting at the bar and saw him throughout the evening at many tables. Super nice touch. The menu, the appetizers, drinks and food were all well described, presented and delicious. My son started with the Espresso Martini and it was delicious (even though there were no beans on top) Heard about the She Crab Soup and, ya, it was delicious! Let's talk bread...I bake and sell in California and, ya, their bread is delicious! And being from California and knowing Napa wine, we went with a ZD and was a fantastic addition to our night! Talk about a good steak, it's here! I've had many from many places and so glad I went with the dry aged Kansas City Bone in Strip. This place knows its meat. Mine came out purple and I sent it back , no problem this happens when steaks are not temperature checked. But when it came back it still wasn't cooked medium pink red center it was still raw purple . So I gave to my friend and I ate some of his ,was not a huge deal and we overlooked it because we had enough to eat and it was delicious. This place delivers literally everything, every single time. The service is always impeccable. The dining rooms can get rowdy however it always feels comfortable to be able to carry a conversation. The food is spectacular from the salads to their raw seafood. Their steaks are cooked absolutely to perfection and I appreciate the server asking you to cut them in front of you to ensure adequate temperatures (never had a poorly cooked steak here). Their desserts are a total hit but the whiskey bread pudding is just perfection. A final note: their drinks are so good if you have 2 of them I guarantee you will need an uber home. Exceptional experience from start to finish. We were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary while visiting Charleston, SC, and Halls Chophouse absolutely delivered a top-notch dining experience. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by a high-energy, friendly host staff that immediately made us feel welcome and set the tone for the evening. I started with the Prince Edward Island oysters on the half shell, which were fresh and excellent. My wife enjoyed the grass-fed filet mignon, while I ordered the 45-day dry-aged ribeye. Both steaks were outstanding - incredible flavor, perfectly prepared, and exceptionally tender. The experience went far beyond just the food. One of the owners, Billy, introduced himself and then personally brought over two glasses of champagne to congratulate us on our anniversary, which was a very thoughtful gesture (even though my wife doesn't drink alcohol and champagne isn't my preference). The restaurant manager also made a point to stop by and congratulate us. Our server, Aidy (pronounced "eighty"), was awesome. Extremely knowledgeable of the menu, attentive, and genuinely enjoyable throughout the evening. As is tradition at Halls, they brought out and displayed the various cuts of steak while explaining the characteristics of each - a great touch that added to the experience. We ordered the mashed potatoes and the pepper jack creamed corn skillet for sides, both excellent. Dessert was the perfect finish: vanilla crème brûlée and whiskey bread pudding. One thing that really stood out was how well orchestrated the entire restaurant operation felt. From the hosts, to the servers, to the managers and support staff, everyone worked together seamlessly to create a polished and memorable dining experience. The staff worked hard, and each person clearly knew and performed their role perfectly. It was impressive! The dining room itself had a loud, energetic vibe that added to the atmosphere of the evening and fit the overall Halls experience perfectly. This is a 10 star review. Food is incredible and options are plentiful. This family owned and operated business is one of my favorite places to support. The people and service and food are fabulous across the board. The number of employees working here 10+ years or longer is impressive. I personally recommend the wet aged ribeye, the French press coffee, the old fashioned and the key lime pie. The main room is more loud than other rooms so if you want peace and quiet ask for the back rooms but if you like live music with piano, saxophone, trumpet and guitar cozy up to a seat in the bar or the bar dining tables. Wow, what happened to the service at Hall's? We had a table of seven tonight, seated at 6 PM, ordered some drinks and then waited about 40 minutes for the waitress to come back to take our order. After that, it took an hour to get our food. The food was good, but it's not even worth talking about after having to wait so long. read more

I'm always a little skeptical trying a restaurant in a touristy area, but this restaurant really blew me away. Our group started with the oysters Rockefeller, and fried green tomatoes. My favorite was the oysters from the apps. Mains were Australian NY strip, braised duck with sides of Brussel sprouts and creamed corn. I have never had braised duck before and it was so delicious! Halls Chophouse absolutely delivered a fantastic night out. We started with the Halls Chop Salad and it was incredible--both the flavors and the presentation were spot on. You can tell they really pay attention to the details. For dinner, we ordered the 8 oz filet and the mushroom risotto. The filet was cooked perfectly (medium rare just as we requested) and was everything you want in a great steak. The mushroom risotto was delicious and full of flavor, but for me (wife), it was just a bit too salty. My husband agreed. Next time, I would definitely ask for less salt because the dish itself was excellent otherwise. We skipped dessert, but honestly didn't feel like we were missing anything after such a great meal. The live music was amazing and really elevated the entire experience. The crowd and vibe were just as good--some people dressed to the nines, while others were in shorts, flip flops, and t-shirts with ball caps. Even though I'm a resident of Charleston, I had yet to visit Halls for snobby reasons - it's a tourist spot, there are other places, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, a friend is in town visiting, and wanted to go to dinner. We're both carnivores, so steak was the order of the day. I did pick a spot off the beaten path, but at the last minute snagged a reservation for Halls, and figured I'd "check off the box." I'm extremely happy I did. Last year I cursed myself by going to The Oak, which was like Outback Steakhouse 2.0; Halls (at least in my experience) was top tier dining at its finest in terms of presentation, service, hospitality, and overall vibe. Yes, it's incredibly loud in there, but that's life. My friend ordered the filet and I, the dry aged ribeye (with black truffle butter accompaniment), both medium rare. Lobster macaroni and cheese and the roasted jalapeño corn, along with the crab cakes and onion soup. The ribeye had fantastic flavor, though I secretly wished I grabbed the NY strip instead. No real reason, but it's a genius marketing move to display the cuts of meat to the table before ordering. That's what screwed me up. But, to be fair, I do that everywhere I eat ("maybe I should have ordered that"). Cannot say enough about the service. A+. Along with our incredible server, no less than two members of management came to our table asking if we needed anything, and that was in a full house. And they all seemed GENUINELY interested in making sure we were happy and satisfied - I didn't feel any of them were going through the motions. I don't usually drink, but I polished off two pineapple martinis and probably could have had five more. Also, I have to note we NEVER felt rushed - it's a hectic room, but the chaos is under control. Totally relaxed and comfortable. Halls Chophouse absolutely delivered for me, and I will certainly be back without a doubt. Halls Chop House is hands down our favorite steakhouse in Charleston and quite honestly one of the best restaurants we have eaten at anywhere. Every time my wife and I visit the city, Halls is a non negotiable stop for us. From the moment you walk in, the level of hospitality is unmatched. Being welcomed and checked on by multiple layers of management throughout the meal makes the entire experience feel intentional, personal, and exceptionally well run. The food is consistently phenomenal. On our most recent visit, we started with the Halls Chopped Salad, which was a perfect ten out of ten. I ordered the 12 ounce filet mignon and it was cooked flawlessly, easily another ten out of ten. We finished with the crème brûlée, which ranks among the best we have had in the country. Service, atmosphere, and execution are all exactly what you expect from a restaurant of this caliber. What makes it even more impressive is how well priced the experience is compared to other high end steakhouses. Kudos to Halls Chop House for continuing to set the bar. We had an excellent experience at Hall's Chophouse. After hearing rave reviews from friends and locals, we were excited to dine here. We made a reservation 2 weeks in advance, and we could only get in at 4:30 or 9pm. So we had an early dinner! I recommend calling way in advance if you know you are going to be in Charleston. The restaurant is a beautiful two story building, with room to accommodate an intimate meal for two or a large family or group. The service here is superior. Our waiter, Kyle, was welcoming, knowledgeable, and personable. We enjoyed the presentation showcasing the selection of steaks they offer. One of the owners also stopped by our table to make sure all was going perfectly. We ordered the Caesar salad and chop salad, and both were very good. Our filets were perfectly cooked and tender. We ordered the loaded mashed potatoes (not our favorite) and the cream corn (good). Our perfect ending to the meal was the cookie skillet. This was our first time here and we have very high expectations when it comes to steak. To start, we got wedge salads and the tuna tartare which was great. It was very fresh and light!! As for our main courses, we got the filet. It was pretty good and had a nice pepper crust!! I will say it is up there on our list. For sides, we got the pepper jack creamed corn skillet, lobster Mac n cheese, and wild mushroom risotto. They were all excellent but the creamed corn was my favorite!! For dessert, we got the chocolate chip cookie skillet with extra ice cream which was soooo good. The service was quick for a steakhouse. Halls NEVER disappoints. We dined there to celebrate my birthday. The service was amazing. Everyone was very attentive. We were seated upstairs, and it was perfect. The ambiance was cozy, not crowded. We could hear guests downstairs and around our table enjoying the FIFA final that night. As usual, Halls food did not disappoint. We started with the lobster tail tower for my husband and I, while our son had his calamari. We all shared the tomahawk ribeye steak that was cooked perfectly. The brussel sprouts are my favorite. Our son enjoyed his truffle fries as soon as they were placed in front of him. Dinner was amazing as usual. I am so sorry that I cannot remember our servers name, but he was sooo nice, professional, and was amazing with his recommendations. We've been to Halls in Columbia. This was our first time dining in the Charleston location. He recommended items like the lobster tower that we'd not tried before. If you are looking for a hot vibe, amazing service and top self food then Halls is your place to go. When walking in we were entertained by a very pleasant duo serenading us. The place is hopping and it is tight in the restaurant but everyone seems to work like a well oiled machine. We got a petite filet, prime rib and loaded potato and a creamed corn souffle. Everything was made to order and delicious. Portions for sides can be family sized or half portions can also be gotten. The dessert were delicious. We just love halls! This is our fist Sunday brunch && it was wonderful. I do think this is the best filet in town. Always cooked perfectly, a little charred on the outside, and packed with flavor. While perusing what I plan on eating at Halls come September 2025, I saw that I have never written a review. Which is wild considering Halls is in my top 3 restaurants of all time. Discovered many moons ago when I lived in Charleston (circa 2011/2013) Halls is the epitome of southern to me. California, where I'm born and raised, is also where the Hall family has deep roots, maybe that's why I feel so connected haha. They love the 49ers too wink! Anyhow, when I moved back to the west and met hubs, I knew I wanted to bring him to the south, specifically Charleston and more importantly, Halls which he loved and we've been back a couple times over the years from across the country. This restaurant is so freaking special and I don't know how Billy Hall makes you feel like a VIP every time you step foot in the door if he's there. You'll be lucky to shake his hand. Lots of hospitality and love. And how much more southern can you get than Gospel brunch which is a must do. Their French toast and bacon is served so unique. I brought my sister here last year and she loved her drinks and tuna tartare. I loved my bison nachos. The top of my to do list when visiting Charleston is visiting Halls (after seeing my girlfriends!) We will eat there more than once which says a lot given how amazing Charleston is for foodies. I honestly don't know where to start... from the warmth and friendliness of ALL the staff to the incredible meal my husband and I got to experience/share. We were first seated downstairs next to the bar, but after asking for a different table (which I absolutely HATE doing, but there were 2 guys just standing and talking to girls right next to us) Malcom made sure to promptly and professionally resolve the small problem. He was so incredibly kind and understanding so major shoutout to him. They moved us upstairs to a very private corner table where we were able to relax and fully enjoy our experience aka our meal. Our waitress upstairs was also incredible. She really took her time with our questions in helping us figuring which cut or steak would suit us best. She was patient and made us feel like we were the only people in the restaurant. We ordered the bone in filet mignon (one of her recs) and it was just to die for. The flavor was spot on and they made sure it was cooked exactly how I wanted it. They split it for me and my husband giving him the more rare part and me the more cooked part (this was our request). He also got the wagyu, which he said was phenomenal and just melted in his mouth. For sides we got the okra and mac n cheese. Both great. But man that okra surprised me and I could've eaten the whole basket by myself. We were celebrating and they brought us complimentary goodies. It was just the perfect touch and truly made us feel valued. We don't live in Charleston, but I absolutely can't wait to come back just so we can dine here again. I had dinner recently at the downtown location. Overall it was a great experience. I'm only docking a single star because while I appreciate the service- it was a little over the top. It wasn't necessary for the staff to continuously approach us while we were eating to say how thankful they were we were there. Once was plenty but it happened five times and it was a bit excessive and was an unnecessary interruption. That being said, everyone was very warm and welcoming. The atmosphere is nice, classy but I did note some people wearing tshirts don't think they enforce the dress code anymore. Or maybe it's more lax during the week. The food (as always!) was exceptional! We ordered the 8oz prime rib, bison steak, Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes. The flavors, the cuts- absolutely delicious. It's a great spot for dates, business meetings, or a family dinner (older families, I would not recommend bringing kids here as it is fine dining.) We ordered apps, salads, steaks, lamb, cocktails, wine, and dessert, hoping SOMETHING would be mediocre so I could write a balanced review. Nothing was. Not one thing. Now my family thinks I'm the kind of person who plans magical evenings. The pressure is immense. I looked everywhere for something to complain about. The water was too refreshing. I was a little overstimulated coming through the door, as there is not a defined hostess stand in the packed bar area (and there was also live music playing) but once we were settled upstairs, I was able to relax. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would. This was hands down the best food I've had in my life thus far. Getting a reservation during dinner time is hard, so plan ahead in advance. We got the Wagyu, Tomahawk, and several sides. The wagyu lives up to the hype, and we the most tender, delicious cut of meat I have had the pleasure of eating. The tomahawk was incredibly flavorful. The staff at Halls is above all others, excellent! The food was unbelievable, and we had the best time! We had the stuffed mushrooms, spicy shrimp and fried green tomatoes. The chop salad is something I am still thinking about! We ordered a variety of steaks, with mashed potatoes, Brussel sprouts and the corn (thanks to Megan), which was the star!! We finished up with deserts of crème brûlée, bread pudding and the chocolate chip skillet. Someway we finished them and were able to walk out without assistance, we were full! I was told that "Gospel Brunch" at Halls Chophouse was an absolute must-have for our Charleston girls' trip. It was certainly one of the best meals of our trip with the best service and one of the best experiences! First off, the owner himself was greeting patrons outside the front door as we entered from the rainy weather which plagued us the entire weekend. Such a warm and classy touch. As the name of the brunch implies, you could literally hear singing from across the street as we approached the restaurant. As soon as you enter the restaurant, there is a very loud group of gospel choir singers on your right who are belting their hearts out to hymns! Luckily our table was seated upstairs (while the music was wonderful, it was loud so we were grateful to hear it but not be right next to it) near the windows. Before we even ordered anything, our waitress came over and said she heard that we were celebrating some birthdays! Four October birthdays to be exact haha. They kindly brought us 6 glasses of bubbles so our 2 non-October friends wouldn't feel left out which I really appreciated. After that, I also got their famous Bloody Mary and then a Halls Old Fashioned. Apparently, Old Fashioneds are a big thing in Charleston because every place we went to had some special variation mostly with peaches involved which was amazing! On to the food, we decided to order some apps for the table and then essentially order our own entrees. For apps we got the Oysters Rockefeller and the Lowcountry Fried Green Tomatoes. I hungrily devoured both. Some girls got a cup of the She-Crab soup which I only had a bite of. It was rich and heavenly but I knew having an entire cup of that to myself would destroy my insides, haha. For my main, I got the Crabcake Eggs Benedict (lump crab cakes, wilted arugula, roasted pepper-Creole) which were yummy. My only complaint is that I wish the cakes were a little browned on the outside just for that texture but the flavor was on point and very lump with meat! Some of the girls got the lobster tail special which also looked pretty good but I was more than happy with my choice. For dessert, we all decided on getting one to share since we were nearly stuffed and settled on the Whiskey Bread Pudding. They brought it out to us with 4 lit birthday candles which was so sweet. Now I love me some good ole' bread pudding and this did not disappoint. All in all, a lovely time was had by all and I will certainly be coming back to Halls the next time I hit up Chucktown! read more
