This was honestly one of the best places I have ever been to. It is seriously a place wish Yelp would let me rate it more than 5 stars. We are from out of town and saw this place and went here. There was a bunch of people sitting outdoors like us waiting for a good bit before any times to be able to come in since it's packed. As soon as we went in the vibe was cool to see and then our waiter was seriously one of the top of the top throughout the whole country. He was actually more than perfect about everything and we were all amazed at him and were all amazing at how the taste of the food was. One of the owners even walked up and spoke to us too and he was seriously wonderful too. My experience was not good. This was my first time back in many years. Although the host and waitress kept assuring us if we did not like something let them know. It got to a point we felt bad telling the waitress how bad the food actually were! 1. Waitress must have been new, she was very unsure about the menu questions. She forgot to give us our beverages and coke slaw! I hate we asked for it- the coke slaw was not worth eating. 2. This was my worst experience when expecting to travel 3 hrs for some good seafood!-it wasn't even mediocre. 3. I ordered, fried whole flounder, Mac and cheese and Coke Slaw!! HORRIBLE! My flounder tasted frozen and rewarmed. It wasn't even hot from the pan when placed in front of me. Definitely not freshly prepared. It had no seasoning. AGAIN HORRIBLE! 4. My sister had fried oysters that were overly breaded and tasted like Chicken Livers. She had sweet potatoes soufflé and Sea bass crab cake. Soufflé was returned- too soupy- no flavor. 5. It's family-owned, and Victor, the owner, personally greeted everyone as soon as we were seated, which made the experience feel extra warm and welcoming. They start you off with complimentary boiled peanuts--perfectly salted and cooked for hours until tender and full of flavor. The bartender was really hustling, shoutout to her. She took multiple orders right after making several drinks in a row, went to check on different food, while another customer was asking for the bill. The bar counter shift is not for the weak!! When my wife and I first arrived in Charleston, our Uber driver gave us some advice. He told us to skip the Italian restaurants, but make sure we eat plenty of seafood! I'm not sure about the Italian places, but seafood restaurants here are awesome and Hyman's is at the top of the list. There's always a line outside here and on a Saturday night, we waited about 45 minutes for a table (no reservations here). They first give you samples of the hush puppies when you're waiting and they're delicious! Once you're seated, they serve you a plate of boiled peanuts, this is the first time I've had this. When you get around to the menu, there are so many choices! We started off with the Carolina Delight which our server said they're known for. These shrimp and grits were fried up into delicious cakes, truly unique! Next I had a bowl of the She Crab soup. This may have been one of the best soups I've ever had! As an entree, I had the Southern Croquettes made with Chilean Sea Bass and my wife had Shrimp Scampi. So much food, you won't walk out hungry! There are pictures of celebrities everywhere here and plaques on the tables of where they are. I sat in the same spot as Rick Pitino. Took my mom to Charleston for the first time, and she said she wanted to try Hyman's seafood. We had such a great time. Everyone who worked there customer service the crap out of us the entire time! Clifton was an excellent server and took great care of us. They loaded us up with appetizers and they were all delicious. The hush puppies were phenomenal. The fried green tomatoes and grits were so savory. Our meal was great, but honestly, the appetizers came out a little more hot and tasted a little bit better than the food, not to say the food was bad for the meal, but the appetizers hit for us more than our main courses did. I fell in love with this place and it's staff. The service here was absolutely amazing, we sat at the bar and both server and bartender were soooooooo cool. The food was good. You have to try the glazed brussels sprouts- -they were amazing. Sometimes the tourist hotspot gets it very right. I thought Hyman's, from the food to the decor to the general store that they very ingeniously make you walk through after your meal to the "conversation starter" cards on your table, was a total hoot. One thing's for sure, you won't be bored during your meal here. For starters, the menu is basically a novel, with multiple variations of seafood. We were having an early dinner so I showed some serious self-restraint by getting a cup of the Charleston classic, the she crab soup, and a side of cole slaw. For my first time trying it, the she crab soup was ... interesting. Adding sherry definitely elevated the flavor. It was thick and chock full of crab meat but something was missing, maybe some acid or heat. I preferred my friend's New England-style chowder. Our waitress was actually the best part of our meal. Warm and funny, she started off with pointing out the literal array of sauces on the table (including a magic sauce that I put on everything), giving us a free plate of their boiled peanuts and hush puppies, and also giving us a complimentary appetizer of their fried green tomatoes and creamy grits (the Wadmalaw Delight). Though I think you can get either or both of those dishes by scanning a QR code. Still, we appreciated the kind gesture - loved trying a small bit of everything. The portion sizes are enormous. It is always hard to rate a place that so many people love or have rated highly. Does the high rating affect my opinion and experience before I even go in? Hyman's is a place that has been reviewed by so many people who apparently think it is perfection. So of course, I go in with high hopes. I wanted to avoid waiting, so I sat at the bar. A female bartender cleaned off the counter and gave me a menu. I will just say, that this particular lady seemed a little too busy to pay attention to some of the patrons. She wasn't very friendly and ignored us for a good part of the time. Luckily there was another lady working in our area who was easier to flag down and seemed much nicer and attentive. When I placed my order, I showed waitress 1 that I had followed them on IG, so that was supposed to get me a complementary order of boiled peanuts and hush puppies. She acknowledged this, but never brought the items. The menu also said if no staff recommended you the Carolina Delight appetizer, a manager would give it to you for free. No one offered, but I didn't want to bring it up to a manager. Probably that offer should be taken off the menu if it's not actually part of the process. I ended up ordering the Carolina Delight, and the grits cakes and sauce were very tasty. The shrimp was pretty good, but the texture was a bit off. (I later found out that despite being on the coast, this restaurant uses frozen seafood.) Overall, I enjoyed the dish though. The last thing I want to point out, and maybe this is common, but I don't commonly sit at the bar. More than one of the waitstaff from the restaurant would come to the bar to pick up drinks for their table and use their bare hands to fish out the garnishes for the drinks. They didn't wash their hands, just dipped in, grabbed a cherry or orange, and dropped it directly into the drink. Is this common? I would think using tongs would be more appropriate. So, I will round up from 3.5 stars and give this restaurant a 4, mostly due to the service missteps. It won't slow down their traffic at all, but maybe next time the service will be a bit better. read more

I'm not sure how or why, but I know I was very impressed with Hyman's Seafood. What can I say, they make delicious seafood southern style. First, they do not accept reservations so be ready to put your name on the list and maybe explore a bit before getting seated. They nearly perfectly timed my wait, but I wouldn't expect they always time things quite as well. Once seated, be prepared for an extensive menu. They have their catch(es) of the day and other specials in addition to a long menu. To avoid analysis paralysis, I went with the recommended shrimp platter as it also had a good variety of shrimp. I didn't know what to expect with BBQ shrimp (unique, good, but probably not something I would get too frequently). I loved the fried shrimp since they were very lightly fried. No surprise, their collard greens were great. I ordered a Bloody Mary to go with my meal and enjoyed it - would recommend. They have a deal where you get a double for a few bucks more, but I decided to pass since I had a run the next day. Great service. Expect a follow up during your meal from one of the owners. A nice touch that was done seeking legit feedback versus just checking a box. I'd love to go back to Hyman's. It will need to wait until my next trip to Charleston! read more

We shared the fried green tomatoes and grits, which was more like cheese with some grits and two tomatoes. This dish needed more tomatoes and grits to balance out the cheese. We shared the Chilean sea bass croquets and the Carolina Special platter. The best thing by far were the hush puppies-Hyman's Seafood makes amazing hush puppies (worth walking by the restaurant just to get the samples they hand out). The croquets and bread were OK-however, everything else was very disappointing. The place is actually larger than what I thought, looks like it is two houses pit together and when you leave they make you go through the gift shop Was a little disappointed because the NOLA shrimp is described as spicy, I can take really spicy this was very mild to my standard and a little too greasy for me but I was careful not to indulge with the sauce due to the amount of oil used, the biggest reason of my disappointment was that the shrimp is "tail on" nothing in the menu described as such also was expecting the shrimp to be local but it was from India was told by server. Had to use knife to cut the tails off and leave some protein inside not without acquiescence that made me sad but I refuse to use my fingers in the greasy sauce. This restaurant was the least raw fish but still seafood I could find on Yelp close to the Charleston market. A Saturday around 1pm our wait for two was about 15 minutes. First time here there is an employee along the road out front offering free hush puppies to waiting public. We were directed up the stairs wait for person tell them table number given. The inside spans a large area, lots of seating upstairs. I was drawn immediately to the corn on cob in shape of small rib, and oh were they delicious. What we didn't know is one order is more than enough for two, we had two orders. As for the entrees, mine in particular the Southern Croquettes Seabass was chefs kiss succulent. The taste is hard to describe you just have to experience it; my wife got bone-in 20 oz fried whole flounder. Quite a lot of fish at least 2-3 servings worth, she was provided an apple chutney sauce to accompany. Each entree included one side and coleslaw. My sweet potato soufflé not too sugary tasted more natural w maybe touch of brown sugar and raisins. She had African rice was okay, coleslaw was good to me maybe a touch of vinegar in it. We showed up at 5:30 on a Thursday evening. We were given a projected wait time of 45 minutes. In the end we waited about an hour but we were able to get one of the tables out front so we were good. A young lady had hush puppies for people to sample. The hush puppies were sweet and delicious. My daughter in law and I went in the general store. They have large sinks when you walk in where you can try different smelling scrubs on your hands. They smelled great and sure made our hands soft and moisturized. Our table ended up being upstairs in a smaller room. When your name is called, the hostess tells you where to go and what table number you are supposed to tell the next person you meet. It was our first time there but it sure felt like there are lots of different rooms. At the table there is a box that they encourage everyone to put their cells phones in so you can engage in conversation. If you do that, Hyman's will make a donation to a charity that you choose from a list. Love this. There are also these cool cards that make for great conversation. Our server was Daniel S. and he took such care of us. As people that had never been there before, he brought us some complimentary hush puppies and boiled peanuts. He helped us pick out the perfect meals and was there to check on us throughout our meal. My daughter in law and I both ordered flights of the moonshine margarita. It was fun trying four different flavors and comparing what we liked about each. We both decided we liked the strawberry best but all the flavors were good. The shrimp were lightly breaded and there were so many of them and they were cooked perfectly. The sea bass croquette was almost decadent. It is definitely a very memorable food that I will be talking about for a long time. The portion sizes were large and the prices were very fair for what you got. We really enjoyed that one of the Hyman family members came by our table and chatted with us. He was very personable and a joy to talk to. You felt like you were catching up with an old friend that wanted to hear about you. In these days where everyone is in such a hurry, it was so nice. You certainly felt like a valued customer. We could not have picked a better place to enjoy our evening. I had seen the very large number of reviews but did not know until we got there how many awards the restaurant has received. The nicest part is that the restaurant doesn't seem to take those for granted. Based on our experience they are doing everything right to deserve each of this awards on a nightly basis.
