Nice dinner but to be really top notch, can do a little more. Really enjoyed the roasted oysters. The she crab was good and the spicy pasta with shrimp was really tasty but expected a slightly bigger portion for the price. Enjoyed the Ken Wright pinot noir, but as a really nitpicky thing, expect a red wine to be served in a bigger glass.

Had a few drinks at the bar with a very friendly bar staff. Dinner upstairs was relaxing and service was great. Started with the "lobster escargot" which was very good. All of us at the table had the scallop special and a side of the street corn. Amazing food. Thanks for making final night in Charleston a good one. Will be back.

Almond basket with fresh berries and ice cream

It has been a while since we dined at Anson, but we were craving the Crispy Flounder with Apricot shallot sauce, and the only other good option is driving 2 hours to Savannah. The restaurant is beautiful with its dark wood and old pictures, most of which paying tribute to horses. The service was spot on. Nothing really stood out to us for appetizers, so we went in a different direction and decided to split the Lobster Buccatini main dish to start a dinner. This was a great pick as we loved the fresh noodles were fantastic in the White wine, and garlic, shallot reduction garnished with the grape tomatoes, We both ordered the Crispy Founder as I indicated that we were BOTH craving it. WOW, WOW, WOW, this is so much better than either of us remembered. I think it was the heat from the peppers that contrasted so well with the sweetness from the apricot sauce that made this dish so much better than before. For dessert the wife ordered and enjoyed the Pecan pie ala mode, I really loved the Almond basket. As the name suggests, the basket is made from crushed Almonds, likely hardened with sugar and melted butter. The basket was filled with fresh berries, ice cream, and a couple of sprigs of fresh mint. Yum!!!! We will NOT wait so long to go back the next time

Five Star rating brought to you by the restaurant's location, service and main dishes. It is also a gorgeous setting. Staff was both friendly and professional, very old school southern charm. The restaurant is right next to Charleston Market. And my shrimp pasta dish was scrumptious. Some things that weren't my favorite include the small dish size for the price and I did not enjoy the snow crab appetizer. While the specialty Margarita was $22 it was good pour. Overall, the ambiance, main dish, and professional southern service make this a recommendation and a would go to again!

Amazingly good

The BEST food we ate all week!!! It is amazing. The fish was incredible, the drinks amazing, the atmosphere terrific, the dessert made us tempted to lick the plate. Would go back again and again. Service had charm. Gluten free items marked on menu. We loved it and it was gluten free. Crab legs- yummy Gf dessert- yummy Fish- amazing we ordered the halibut and the grouper

Great atmosphere, good service and the food is amazing. We had the Tomahawk pork chops and the royal red shrimp appetizer, both were very tasty. It's located next to the Old Town carriage tours so you can roll right out of the restaurant and scratch the horses' noses. Recommend highly.

Beet and burrata salad

An excellent dinner with expert polished service: beet and burrata salad with pistachio vinaigrette to start, halibut and filet mignon for entrees, and hazelnut cake with a Sauternes dessert wine to finish. The meal was well paced, service was prompt and unobtrusive, and the upstairs dining room has old time ambiance with moody low country marsh murals and crystal chandeliers. Wines by the glass were very good and the rum punch was attractively presented.

As a Charleston native who's been living in Texas for the past several years, it had been quite some time since I've eaten at Anson (about 10 years or so give or take) During one of my frequent (but unplanned) trips back to the Lowcountry my sister made a last minute dinner reservations for us and Anson was one of the few available to accommodate so I was excited to give this old Charleston standard a visit with an older and more appreciative palate. The host at the front and hostess were all incredibly friendly as well all of the wait staff, unfortunately though I don't see myself returning for probably another 10 years based on the quality of the meal. For starters our table went with the tuna and fried green tomatoes and for my entree I went with the filet with a cup of the she crab soup on the side. The pros: -the tuna appetizer was very interesting and had an interesting contrast of flavors that I really enjoyed. This wasn't a dish I would have ordered myself so I was glad the table did -my sister had the brussel sprouts as a side and she said they were her favorite item from the menu that she tasted that night The meh: -The fried green tomatoes were fine. In a city renown for its southern cuisine though, you can find better. These just didn't have any love in 'em. --one member of my table ordered the lobster pasta...he said it was "just ok" but he was too hungry not to eat it. The bad: -Again, in a city renown for its southern cuisine no restaurant should be screwing up one of the state's homegrown food items - she crab soup. I've enjoyed the South Carolinian dish all throughout the state and can firmly say Anson has the title for my least favorite. I had 2 spoonfuls and pushed it to the side. I think sherry must be the #1 ingredient in Anson's recipe as it was all I could taste -I ordered my filet medium with black truffle butter but what I received was more medium well marching its way to well done. As soon as it was brought to the staff's attention they were very prompt in remedying the issue, however, by the time the freshly prepared steak was brought back to me the rest of my table was almost finished dining. I did try a few bites and it was cooked to perfection the second time around HOWEVER the truffle butter was missing as well as the accompanying parmesan tomato. I had to request they be brought back and when they were the butter was ice cold. -My sister ordered the salmon and she said it was extremely fishy. She only ate about half the dish before giving up on it. When the final bill came they had taken the she crab soup off of the bill On a final note - I also didn't get what ambience they were trying to go for in there. Casual southern elegance? Sports bar? The giant tv over the bar playing a game was giving off mixed vibes with the rest of the space. TLDR - Charleston (yet alone the Market area) has too many phenomenal restaurants to waste your appetite or money on Anson.

Shrimp And Grits

Very special. She-crab soup was phenomenal. Creamy, sweet yet savory and rich but light. Fried oysters were great too. Shrimp and grits. Phenomenal. A little smokey which was nice. Scallops were cooked perfectly. Risotto bed they was perfect. The tomatoes stole the show here. Special date night atmosphere inside. Friendly staff. Overall excellent.

Anson is a Charleston establishment I shockingly had never been to. All around I had a good experience. Service was friendly and the food was tasty. Started out with the fried green tomato appetizer that had delicious chunks of bacon with it. Ordered the NY strip with bone marrow butter and street corn as the side. Steak was perfectly cooked. Finally ended with the fruit basket for dessert. Loved the crunchy shell!

Mother's Day really was my day. Marianne was our very nice server and when she said the special of the day, I was crazy excited. Boy did they live up to expectations. Quite large ( and you got 2 shockingly) with the crispiest and very flavorful crust, then to bite into huge chunks of perfectly cooked crab. Heaven! The dish also came with mashed potatoes and perfectly cooked asparagus with a lovely sauce on the bottom of the plate.,I am critical of every asparagus I've had in a restaurant. Not these. I also had their famous crab cakes with buerre blanc sauce. I held myself back from licking that plate! What a Mama's day I had!!!

My husband and I shared the fried seafood platter for our entree, and it had grouper, flounder, and shrimp. Everything was really good, including the hushpuppies and fries. The desserts are small, so our table ordered three different ones- key lime pie, chocolate peanut parfait, and cheesecake. By far the best one was the chocolate peanut parfait. The dress code here says business casual, but you will see people dressed all sorts of ways. The restaurant and staff present as elegant, so I think most people would feel comfortable if they stuck with business casual attire.

We both loved our dishes and said we will come back again the next time we are in Charleston to have these dishes. The waitress said the seafood pasta is one of the best dishes they have and she was right! The service was great. The waitress was very engaging and checked on us often. The manager came by, along with other employees/ management. We have eaten at a lot of restaurants in the historic district over the years. This is one of the best.

Other than positive... 1) two of us ordered the Mediterranean shrimp pasta (I think that's what it was called). The shrimp was not cooked through on both of our dishes. Not slightly under - REALLY under. A TAD pink but mostly still gray. the pasta was only slightly warm too - just a lose lose. 2) The she crab soup was NOT good. 3) Grouper po boy. The Positive is that the grouper was decent however it was impossible to eat. Bun piled w/things. Seems like a good problem but not fun to try to eat as a handheld. 4) Music - Dean Martin and so forth being played in the dining room - great. Good vibe. For some reason that stopped and all we could hear was Tool being played loudly in the kitchen. The door to the kitchen was open and what I can only assume were managers were sitting on their computers at a high top right by us (I say that bc they went in and out of the kitchen and one was in chef like clothes). Why they didn't shut it down is beyond me. Overall disappointed.

The food is somewhat bland (out of 4 of us, one actually liked their meal while the rest of us were underwhelmed). Pros: location, easy to get seated, prices are decent (for DT Charleston) wait staff was good, drinks were good. Cons: primarily the food was bland. The host station was not running at its best either. We had a reservation and they told us they were "working on our table," and we should wait "under the stairs." Apparently "under the stairs" is also where they store napkins and supplies. We looked to our right and saw 3 empty and clean tables. After about 5 minutes of standing under the stairs, they sat us at one of those tables, which had not required any extra "getting ready." Just didn't sit well ( or stand well) with me.

My boyfriend and I went for happy hour and were so pleasantly surprised. I've been trying to avoid…read moretourist traps and we finally found an amazing spot with great food and wonderful pricing. First we were told to grab a seat anywhere so we sat at the oyster shucking station. The man shucking oysters (forgot his name, sorry!) was super kind and very knowledgeable and got our oysters ready in no time. I ordered 6 raw oysters and my bf got 6 oysters steamed. Due to a small mixup in the kitchen, my bf's steamed oysters came out a bit late, however they were delicious according to him. My raw ones were fresh and sooooo yummy. It was also happy hour so each oyster was only $1.50. Best price in the area!!! We grabbed some other happy hour menu items: hushpuppies, peel and eat steamed shrimp, steamed clams, and we ordered a side snow crab cluster not on happy hour. Everything was DELICIOUS. We walked out of there feeling good about the money we spent and we now have a place to go to every time we are in town. The ONLY downside was our waiter. He's lucky I forgot his name because he was awful and had the personality of a doorknob. I almost wanted to speak to the manager about him because he brought the vibe down. Horrible customer service, doesn't know how to be professional, and even when I waved goodbye saying thank you with a huge smile he just stared at me and didn't say anything. He needs a talking to because it's not that hard to be kind to others or have a little personality, especially in the hospitality industry.

Overall I had a pleasant experience, which may not be reflected in the amount of stars I'm giving them. If I could do a 3.5 I would. The food was the highlight of my experience. We got the pimento cheese balls to start, which were absolutely delicious. Then I got the shrimp mac and cheese, which was also pretty good. Nothing to write home about. My drink was pretty bad, which I partially blame myself for just for ordering poorly. It tasted like tequila and red dye 40 in a martini glass. It was also lukewarm when I got it. If I'm paying around $15 for a drink, it needs to be good. As you can kinda tell by the picture, the lights in the restaurant were ON. Which isn't really a problem, but it doesn't really make for a cool ambiance.
