To start this place is just super cute! Our waiter was beyond great at his job. Had good recommendations was friendly, checked in often and never left us hanging waiting to see where someone was. We had the lobster "escargot" as well as the fried green tomatoes - both were wonderful. The lobster was such an interesting take on the classic French dish. We all got the halibut - because it sounded so good and no one was disappointed it was AMAZING! What an incredible dinner experience at Anson! I came for my birthday and it absolutely did not disappoint. First of all, the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous and the service is top notch. They have an extensive wine list for whatever your taste is, as well as a variety of beer and cocktails. Everything we had was excellent and portion sizes were impressive for a high dollar restaurant. We ordered the smoked trout dip and fried green tomatoes to start. The dip was super yummy and the homemade crackers were excellent. The fried green tomatoes were perfect and came with so much bacon jam that we had some leftover and honestly just ate it with a spoon. My husband and I split the grouper and the gnocchi. Both were super tasty and the amount of grouper was great. The gnocchi was cooked to perfection and the wagu was a great addition. We also split duck fat potatoes which were great, but the Brussels sprouts stole the show! We ended with the apple streusel, which was ginormous, but we were practically licking the bowl after- it was soooo good. This was our third time here. Darnell is our favorite server. He's not only sweet, kind and super smart by remembering our entire order-he recommends the best wines and specials for the day. One of the best meals I've had in Charleston if not the best. Classy and classic Charleston vibe. Restaurant is in an old mansion, all the rooms are unique and beautiful. The drinks were great. Grilled oysters were perfect. Wifey got the waygu shortrib gnocchi and I had a bone in tomahawk style pork chop that was one of the specials. Both were incredible. It has been a while since we dined at Anson, but we were craving the Crispy Flounder with Apricot shallot sauce, and the only other good option is driving 2 hours to Savannah. The restaurant is beautiful with its dark wood and old pictures, most of which paying tribute to horses. The service was spot on. Nothing really stood out to us for appetizers, so we went in a different direction and decided to split the Lobster Buccatini main dish to start a dinner. This was a great pick as we loved the fresh noodles were fantastic in the White wine, and garlic, shallot reduction garnished with the grape tomatoes, We both ordered the Crispy Founder as I indicated that we were BOTH craving it. WOW, WOW, WOW, this is so much better than either of us remembered. I think it was the heat from the peppers that contrasted so well with the sweetness from the apricot sauce that made this dish so much better than before. For dessert the wife ordered and enjoyed the Pecan pie ala mode, I really loved the Almond basket. The restaurant is right next to Charleston Market. And my shrimp pasta dish was scrumptious. Three of us and we each wholeheartedly decided to forgo other reservations ti return twice during our visit because it was that good. More reasonably priced as well, which was an extra treat. As a Charleston native who's been living in Texas for the past several years, it had been quite some time since I've eaten at Anson (about 10 years or so give or take) During one of my frequent (but unplanned) trips back to the Lowcountry my sister made a last minute dinner reservations for us and Anson was one of the few available to accommodate so I was excited to give this old Charleston standard a visit with an older and more appreciative palate. The host at the front and hostess were all incredibly friendly as well all of the wait staff, unfortunately though I don't see myself returning for probably another 10 years based on the quality of the meal. For starters our table went with the tuna and fried green tomatoes and for my entree I went with the filet with a cup of the she crab soup on the side. The pros: -the tuna appetizer was very interesting and had an interesting contrast of flavors that I really enjoyed. This wasn't a dish I would have ordered myself so I was glad the table did -my sister had the brussel sprouts as a side and she said they were her favorite item from the menu that she tasted that night The meh: -The fried green tomatoes were fine. In a city renown for its southern cuisine though, you can find better. These just didn't have any love in 'em. --one member of my table ordered the lobster pasta...he said it was "just ok" but he was too hungry not to eat it. The bad: -Again, in a city renown for its southern cuisine no restaurant should be screwing up one of the state's homegrown food items - she crab soup. I've enjoyed the South Carolinian dish all throughout the state and can firmly say Anson has the title for my least favorite. I had 2 spoonfuls and pushed it to the side. I think sherry must be the #1 ingredient in Anson's recipe as it was all I could taste -I ordered my filet medium with black truffle butter but what I received was more medium well marching its way to well done. As soon as it was brought to the staff's attention they were very prompt in remedying the issue, however, by the time the freshly prepared steak was brought back to me the rest of my table was almost finished dining. I did try a few bites and it was cooked to perfection the second time around HOWEVER the truffle butter was missing as well as the accompanying parmesan tomato. I had to request they be brought back and when they were the butter was ice cold. -My sister ordered the salmon and she said it was extremely fishy. She only ate about half the dish before giving up on it. When the final bill came they had taken the she crab soup off of the bill On a final note - I also didn't get what ambience they were trying to go for in there. Casual southern elegance? Sports bar? The giant tv over the bar playing a game was giving off mixed vibes with the rest of the space. This is a hidden gem right in the heart of downtown Charleston! The atmosphere and service are both top notch. The food is even better! The short rib with goat cheese gnocchi and the spicy shrimp with alla vodka sauce is to die for. But our very favorite thing is the coconut milk, pesto gnocchi side that's offered as a special. We had it the first time we went and dreamed about it for months until we could return to the area. Luckily Darnell was able to get it for us even though it wasn't on the specials for the night. Sounds kinda weird but TRUST ME. So good! Love a good crusty bread baked to perfection? They have it. The bar makes excellent cocktails as well. And it does have a nice selection of finer foods. But by way of comparison, a comparable meal in Dallas would be about 25% less expensive. On a recent trip to Charleston after moving a couple of years ago to NC, we had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. It was amazing in every way possible! I personally have been a patron of Anson's since my late 20's and it is always consistently good. I love that it gets updates every few years to give it a whole new vibe. Our waitress was so friendly and helpful with choosing our starters. The she crab soup was heavenly and the Caesar salad was really tasty and fresh. I had the grouper entree and it was absolutely delicious! My husband had the halibut entree and his was excellent as well. We also found out that we could get a side of the goat cheese gnocchi as a special treat! There wasn't a single piece of food left on any of our plates. Perfection! They even made a spectacular 2 dishes for my wife who is vegan. The food is always incredible. Cannot recommend the sautéed shrimp appetizer enough. The flounder dish is also phenomenal. It has an old Charleston charm & is one of those hidden gems that is never too busy to find you a table. They always find a way to support the customers & I don't see that often anymore.
