Celebrated my husband's birthday on Friday the 13th in March. This was our first time trip to Charleston and we chose to celebrate his birthday here based on the menu and the Yelp reviews. We each selected a different tasting menu to share the whole experience and added a seared foie gras. The food presentations were beautifully done and we mostly enjoyed the food. The highlight of our meal was the combination of the beef and seared foie gras. It was so delicious. The service was amazing throughout the entire evening. Overall, we had a great meal with a very relaxed atmosphere.

Highly Recommend! This was truly one of the coolest dining experiences I've ever had. We chose the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings--each of us selected a different tasting, so we had the chance to try everything. Every course was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented, and the wine pairings elevated the entire experience. The service was outstanding--attentive without being overbearing--and the staff made us feel genuinely welcomed. From start to finish, everything was exceptional. I can honestly say this was one of the best dining experiences of my life, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for something unforgettable.

Very charming building on the outside, classy on the inside. Very pleased with atmosphere and seating comfort. Service was great in the sense of timeliness, keeping your glass full etc. However the friendliness wasn't quite there for me. We ordered both tasting menus. Highlights were the bread, the duck, the pork belly and the salmon. The beef has a lovely demi glaze, but lacked coarse seasoning you expect on a fillet. Perfectly cooked and tender though. Dessert was simply masterful. I was disappointed that there was no offering of coffee or tea with dessert or at least after as a digestive. I certainly would return, but not until I've tried some other fine dining establishments in the area first. I give 4 stars. I took one away due to the lack of seasoning with the beef, and the lack of warmth from the server.

I have to admit my 1st visit was better than this recent visit. Started with the pork on toast app and it was not great, i actually considered sending it back. It was dry and lacked flavor. The tenderloin was very good but I missed the venison that we had last time. All in all our serve Angel was great. The ambience was great.

Amazing dining experience, from the ambiance, to the wine list, to the service - we were blown away. This was my first time trying fine dining and it was an absolute delight. The tasting menus were so good and well thought out, each course builds and dessert was fantastic. Thank you for making my birthday a special one.

Quite the experience. This was our splurge dinner while visiting Charleston. My girlfriend and I opted for the tasting menus. With wine pairings these ran $220 each. Rather spendy, yes, but also very good. She had the ASHLEY TASTING MENU, consisting of: SOUP & SANDWICH--Open Face Brioche Lobster "Roll", Chives, Lobster Bisque / ARCTIC CHAR--English Peas, Poached Garlic Bechamel, Fingerling Potato Chips, Meyer Lemon / FRIED POULET ROUGE--Caviar, Gold Leaf, Preserved Roma Tomato, Pickle Buttermilk Dressing / LAMB CHOPS French Onion Potato Napoleon, Asparagus, Black Garlic Demiglace, Butterless Hollandaise / APPLE COBBLER SOUFFLÉ--Cinnamon Soufflé, Caramel Apple Ice Cream, Vanilla Anglaise. I opted for the COOPER TASTING MENU, which included: FOIE GRAS TORCHON "BRULEE"--Peach Cider Curd, Toasted Pecans, Finger Lime, Basil / BLUE CRAB SALAD--Pineapple Sorbet, Cucumber, Radish, Romesco Sauce, Tequila Vinegar Gel, Cilantro, Tortilla Crisps / BERKSHIRE PORK Gnocchi, Smoked Paprika Tomato Sauce, Manchego, Truffle Crema / WAGYU BEEF Garlic Butter Whipped Potatoes, Petite Vegetables, Smoked Foie Gras Demiglace / CHOCOLATE & PEARS--Chocolate Truffle Cake, Port Poached Pears, Grand Marnier Toffee Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream, Blood Orange Gel. Everything we had was artfully prepared and presented. The "journey of taste" we went on was one of wonder. We shared and mixed and matched between our two menus. The wine pairings were exquisitely done. Perhaps somewhat ironically, I very much enjoyed the wine pairings from the Ashley with the foods from the Cooper. At the end of the night, with tip, we dropped almost $600 for the two of us. Was it worth it? Probably. Service was excellent. We had a great time. And it was quite memorable. I wish I had taken some pictures of the meal.

There's nothing superior to Circa 1886 in Charleston. From the exquisite atmosphere, the the superb menu, and the incredible top tier service you get from the time you enter until you have laid down your fork- it's divine (Craig is amazing- cannot say enough good things about him and he always times our plates so well). We always order both chef menus to really get to experience the high caliber quality food they put out but have also ordered entrees like the tenderloin and it's so good you'll be audible about it.

Tucked away in the original carriage house of the Wentworth Mansion, replete with its original pine floors and enchanting architectural accoutrements, Circa 1886, as their website so understatedly notes, "evokes the romance and Old-World charm of historic downtown Charleston." An understatement, indeed, considering that in 2020 the restaurant was cited as one of "The Most Romantic Restaurants in the World" by Architectural Digest. But Circa 1886 offers diners infinitely more than alluring ambience, as the restaurant is consistently ranked as one of the finest the city of Charleston has to offer. For over a decade, Executive Chef Marc Collins has worked with local farmers and fishermen to create an innovative seasonal & local menu that has taken Lowcountry cuisine to new culinary heights... In 2019, he launched a unique four-part menu that takes diners on an historical journey through South Carolina's fascinating foodways - Tastes of Native Tribes... Flavors Brought from Africa... Influences from Europe - and how these elements have been fused into a decidedly modern take on Lowcountry cuisine... South Carolina Today. Needless to say, the menu presented so many intriguing possibilities that it was extremely difficult knowing what to choose. Somehow or other - undoubtedly by pure chance - my dining partner and I managed to put a dent in all four categories. I began with the Foie Gras (from Europe), which, when I happen to spy it on a menu is almost impossible to resist. Mr. Collins version was particularly avant garde, bewitching the palate with such delicious traveling companions as cassava pudding, pomegranate strawberry jam, lime basil oil, and smattering of hazelnuts. My dining companion's Shrimp n' Rice Grits (from Africa; pictured) was equally au courant, incorporating smoked ham hock gravy, Burden Creek Dairy goat cheese, and tiara of cabbage leaves. It was a rather warm evening in Charleston, so we decided to take the piscatorial route. I opted for the Paprika Grouper (from Europe). Pillowed on a seabed of leeks n' kale, it was accompanied by crispy fingerling potatoes and garnished with Manchego cheese and an intriguing preserved tomato & caper crudo... A captivating combo of flavors and textures to say the least. My dining partner's Rainbow Trout (Native Tribes; pictured), however, was even more thought-provoking. The filet was enveloped in an ethereal sunflower sumac crust and kissed by an enticing corn sauce, with a wild rice porridge, arugula, and cranberry paint in strong supporting roles. Other interesting items that are definitely worth a try... Butternut Squash & Peanut Soup: grilled scallion lacquer, dried mango; Southern Grilled Cheese: pimento cheese mousse, grilled brioche, Surryano ham, paddlefish caviar, cured yolk powder; Chicken Fried Duck Breast: Hoppin' John, turnips & tops, orange & grapefruit salad, buttered biscuit gravy; Peri-Peri Pork Belly: coconut red rice, collard greens, red onion piccalilli, guave purée; Sea Scallops: blue corn grits, copper carrots, Brussels sprouts, vanilla bean vinaigrette. Desserts continued the kitchen's winning ways with one representative from each of the menu's above-mentioned four culinary categories: Sweet Corn and Huckleberry (Native Tribes): sweet corn Bavarian, Johnny cakes, huckleberry sorbet, puffed hominy; Coconut Sombi (from Africa): Carolina gold rice pudding, fresh mango, coconut sorbet, benne seed tuile; Mousse au chocolat (from Europe): dark chocolate mousse, caramel crèmeux, pecan profiterole, chocolate sauce. Our denouement of choice, however, was the Strawberry Shortcake Soufflé (South Carolina Today; pictured): beautifully textured buttermilk soufflé, rich, decadent Grand Marnier ice cream, and sweet fresh strawberries... Incomparable. One final note. Circa 1886 also has a fabulous wine list... including a Bucket List Wines by the Ounce, with one, three, and five ounce pours of some extraordinary vintages. And their innovative specialty cocktails are certain to raise a few eyebrows as well as spirits... Like Spring on Wentworth: Vodka, Limoncello, Lemon, Basil; Ladies Man: Glenmorangie, Cocchi Americano, Orange Bitters; or Little Bird Told Me: Spiced Rum, Campari, Pineapple. If you are visiting the Charleston area, Circa 1886 is certainly worth a visit. Check that... a journey.

This was my "splurge meal" while visiting Charleston. | Food | I enjoyed the Cooper tasting menu, which included an amuse-bouche and the following items: 4 stars - Foie Gras Torchon "Brûlée" with Peach Cider Curd, Toasted Pecans, Finger Lime, Basil Blue Crab Salad with Pineapple Sorbet, Cucumber, Radish, Romesco Sauce, Tequila Vinegar Gel, Cilantro, Tortilla Crisps 4 stars - Berkshare Pork with Gnocchi, Smoked Paprika Tomato Sauce, Manchego, Truffle Crema. The pork was delicious, however the gnocchi was a bit gummy. 5 stars - Wagyu Beef with Garlic Butter Whipped Potatoes, Petite Vegetables, Smoked Foie Gras Demiglace. The wagyu beef was so tasty and perfectly crusted. Amazing dish! 5 stars (And I'm not even a chocolate fan) - Chocolate & Pears with Chocolate Truffle Cake, Port Poached Pears, Grand Marnier Toffee Sauce, Vanilla Ice Cream, Blood Orange Gel | Atmosphere | The restaurant is on the grounds of the historic Wentworth mansion hotel, and is in the original carriage house. The front entrance walkway consists of a lovely seasonal garden. Inside feels very "old money" with a formal dining room and circular tables with white linens. | Service | The service is impeccable. Our server, Craig, was very professional and handled out group with aplomb (including seamlessly removing a place setting when one person was a no-show to ensure we had more space). We wanted for nothing throughout the entire meal. He was amazing with explaining the details of every course and also the wine pairings. Pro Tip: If you can enter the restaurant by way of the Wentworth mansion entrance and lobby for a peak inside the gorgeous mansion! (There is a cutoff time by which you can enter the mansion).

The chef's tasting menu with wine pairing is out of this world. The food was perfect. Inventive, delicious and small portions, which I prefer. Service is amazing. Great fine dining experience, best in CHS imo. ~300pp.

Had dinner here while staying at the Wentworth Mansion for our 1 year wedding anniversary. It was fantastic!! The service was superb, the food was superb. We started with pork belly that was cooked so well it melted in my mouth. I also had the lemon fish, it was perfectly cooked and so good. Our desserts came with little chocolate medallions that said "happy anniversary!" Just a fantastic experience all around. We will definitely be back!

My husband and I did the tasting menu for our anniversary dinner. The location is a bit off the main drag and close to the college. Upon arrival you walk through a historic house that has been turned into a bed and breakfast. The restaurant is in the back, which was the old carriage house. The food was flavorful paired with the wines, however, we were one of the last seatings that night and felt rushed. The food came out quickly and there was not much time between our courses. If your looking for a tasting menu in a cool location, this is a great place. Unfortunately overall I won't be back again and will looks elsewhere next time.

We were in town for the weekend, and my husband was nice enough to make a reservation at this restaurant. It is contained in a former mansion in town. The ambiance was excellent. They have two different tasting menus as well as a regular menu. We opted for the regular menu and were very happy with it. We started with the pork belly appetizer, which was good. For my entree, I had the beef tenderloin. It came with a delicious demi glaze, mashed potatoes, and several vegetables. My husband had the scallops entree and really liked it. For dessert, we shared the special soufflé. It had apples and apple pie ice cream with it and was fabulous. A true dining pleasure.

Ask the Community - Circa 1886 Restaurant

What is the dress attire for dinner?

I'd say dressy casual. Jeans w button down shirt for guys. Dress or nice top w jeans for ladies ok too.

How are the meal portions? Can two people share an entree?

Not really. The portions are just right . . . for one adult.

Poogan's Porch is a couple blocks off the main Market/Bay path, but it's still close to a good number of hotels and historic sites. It was a casual 15 minute stroll from my hotel right on E Bay. The service and food were excellent and the setting is inside a finely converted historic style home. We had a reservation for brunch on a weekday, but it wouldn't have been impossible to walk in that time of day. I would assume that it gets busier on weekends and in more tourist seasons. There is an option for outside seating, but in the Charleston heat and humidity, we opted for sitting inside. My friend and I each got cocktails and entrees. Cocktails were generously sized and reasonably priced. I was right to get the cajun remoulade on the side of my Fried Chicken Sandwich as this allowed me to dole out my spice as I could tolerate. My friend's Chicken and Waffles were fluffy and moist. The seasoning on these boneless chicken tenders was *chef's kiss*. Here's the only thing that I will mention as a drawback: The bathrooms. I understand this is a converted house and the historic-ness is part of its charm. However, when your women's bathroom has two stalls and one of the toilets isn't screwed into the floor and you cannot close the door without straddling the bowl... there's an impact to your enjoyment of the restaurant. I would emphasize this even more when the waste basket in the bathroom is overflowing and there are multiple hosts at the host stand waiting for customers to come in. If you haven't been to Poogan's Porch, it's worth a visit the next time you're in Charleston.

Although some dishes are seasonal, these happen to be entrees that are served year-round according to our server Both were quite delicious. There were only two medium pieces of fried tomato so I do wish they put more in the plate but oh well. My partner loved his bouillabaisse and apparently it's the southern rendition of a French dish that is one of their most popular dishes. It has lots of seafood in it. The meal also came with complimentary warm bread, which was nice. The pecan pie was very good, but the crust was kind of hard and there were fewer pecans than I'm used to and more caramel. The ambiance is more formal but people were dressed mostly casual (and chic if I might add). For the price, we didn't feel the experience was worth it. We thought it was an attempt at elevated southern food that didn't quite succeed.

Asked the bartender what would be good and he suggested the Creole shrimp. That sounded good and I've learned that you generally can't go wrong going with bartenders' recommendations. Anyway, they came out and they were WAY overcooked. They were like rubber and the seasoning was NOT on point. Honestly, I make Creole / bbq shrimp at home and they're always MUCH better than what I got at The Darling. The service (with the exception of the lousy recommendation) was decent enough. If I ever go back, I'll probably stick with oysters on the half shell. (Sorry no pic. I actually took one that day, but subsequently deleted it because it was so bad.)

We were staying at the Meeting House Inn so were able to easily and leisurely walk to lunch and dinner. Service was excellent, true Southern hospitality, and the restaurant is adorable. Food was amazing, each of the four of us loved our dish and tasted each others as well: - shrimp and grits - 5/5, plentiful and plump shrimp with a flavorful sauce over creamy grits. This was not my dish so I only got a taste and next time we go back I'm going to get this for myself! - grilled salmon sald - 5*5, arugula, couscous, dried fruit, pine nuts, feta, lemon shallot vinaigrette (this dressing is so delicoius! I want the recipe!), two of us ordered this one and again, i got a bite and want to order this for myself next time (see the problem here?) The combination of flavors and textures was amazing. Rave reviews from all. - scallops or was it special flounder - 4/5, I can't even remember what I ordered and the fact that I cannot quite remember it but distinctly remember my friends' lunches means I did not order the right dish! It was solid but not something to write home about (or on Yelp about) - corn muffins - 5*5, i'm pretty sure the corn muffins came as the "bread" for the table and they were so yummy! Our server heard me rave about the not too sweet, moist yet with a nice crumb muffins, and asked if I wanted the recipe, to which I said Yes! I look forward to going back next time I'm in Charleston!

We got there just before 6 PM, and although the restaurant was pretty full, they told us they'd try to seat us outside due to our party size. That worked perfectly since they had heaters going. They quoted us a 45-minute wait, but it ended up being closer to 15 minutes -- a great surprise. The service was seriously outstanding. I have zero complaints. Everyone was so personable and attentive. For appetizers, the beef carpaccio was my favorite. For entrées, we ordered the pork chop, tuna, duck, and lamb -- and we all shared bites. Everything was delicious. My pork chop did come out a little dry, but when I mentioned it, our waitress didn't hesitate at all. She immediately took it back and insisted on bringing a new one, making me feel completely comfortable about saying something. While I waited, she brought me a complimentary soup, which was such a thoughtful touch, and the replacement came out quickly. The manager personally brought out the new dish and waited while I cut into it to make sure it was perfect. She even came back later to check again. That level of attention to detail really stood out. To top it off, they brought out dessert and a round of champagne for the table. I wasn't drinking, and they noticed -- so they brought me a mocktail without me even asking. That kind of attentiveness is rare. The inside looked beautiful, and I'd love to sit inside next time to experience the full vibe, but outside was perfect -- not too cold, not windy, and overall just a great atmosphere. Overall, one of the best service experiences I've had in a long time. Highly recommend.

If you're getting food, definitely try the blistered green beans, poutine, and the farmer's salad (which is like a Cobb salad/bowl, it's amazing) *but* my all-time fave is the fried chicken sandwich - it's honestly one of the best l've ever had in Charleston. Also, this place is huge so they were able to accommodate my friend's post-wedding party (about 20 people) at the last minute and we had a blast. Everywhere else we tried to go either didn't have the space for us or were closing so it totally made our night! We just made sure to call ahead to check and they were more than happy to have us - the bride was happy so you know it was good :) Bottom line, the Peacock is a local gem hidden in plain sight on East Bay and, as a local, it's become one of my top go-to's in Charleston. You can't beat the prices (seriously), ambience, quality, and awesome staff. They also have live music every week so they know how to keep it classy and lively at the same time. I highly recommend checking it out!

We also ordered one of our favorite dishes, the Farmer's Salad with Chicken, and it was absolutely delicious -- so good, in fact, that we dove right in and forgot to take a photo first! The food at the surrounding tables looked equally incredible; I'd especially recommend the cheese plate and the tuna. As a bonus, there's a nightclub on the second floor that gets lively on weekends, so the fun doesn't have to stop after dinner. If you haven't been to The Peacock yet, do yourself a favor and stop by -- great food, great drinks, and a wonderful atmosphere. We'll definitely be back!

We were a little early for our reservations and were told that they are seating exactly on time, which was totally fine. We strolled around a bit and returned at our designated time. We were seated on the first floor in a room near the street. We loved how each room had a different ambiance to it! It really is a beautiful restaurant with a lot of charm to it! Our waitress was very nice! She was very helpful with her recommendations and very attentive. My husband and I both ordered drinks and my daughter ordered a Shirley Temple. Her Shirley Temple was extremely grenadine heavy, which I think they assumed they were doing her a favor, but she was a bit overwhelmed by how sweet it was. They serve it with a Sprite instead of Ginger Ale, just FYI. For dinner, I of course had to order the She Crab soup. Believe the hype! It was the best She Crab soup I had in Charleston. It was sheer perfection. I ordered the Skillet Chicken Cutlets and my husband had the Braised Beef Short Ribs. His dinner was delicious, the short ribs were so soft and tender and just melted in your mouth. I enjoyed the few bites of his more than my chicken, even though my meal was still good. There was A LOT of corn with my meal, but everything had such a great taste to it. We rounded the dinner off with a piece of Pecan Pie and vanilla ice cream which was very good as well. This restaurant is definitely on the more expensive side so be ready to drop a pretty penny. Overall, it was pretty darn good, and we will probably be back!
