Brace yourselves--this is going to be a long one, because this experience deserves every bit of it. We recently had the opportunity to do a chef's tasting at Honeysuckle Rose, and from the very first interaction, it was clear this wasn't going to be your average night out. We had a bit of a hiccup to start--we couldn't find our gift card (of course). I called and spoke with Kelleanne, and I have to say, this is truly where the experience began. She was warm, understanding, and genuinely funny, turning what could have been a stressful moment into something easy and even enjoyable. She handled everything with kindness and grace, and it set the tone for the evening ahead. A couple of days before our reservation, we received a confirmation call from James--but not the typical kind. He asked thoughtful, personal questions: who my guest would be, our water preferences (yes, really), allergies, absolute no-go foods, and even a song that held meaning to us. At that point, our curiosity was fully piqued. When we arrived, the space immediately stands out. It's very dark--blacked-out windows, black walls, black ceiling--and it's all completely intentional. Before the meal began, Kelleanne explained that the goal is to create an intimate dinner party atmosphere, where you forget the outside world and fully immerse yourself in the experience. And it works. It really works. At your seat, you're given what feels like an invitation--that's your menu for the evening. Each course is introduced by chef River and sommelier Mary Kate, adding a personal and thoughtful touch to every dish. I won't go course-by-course (we'd be here all night), but just know: every single one was worthy of praise. Chef River is absolutely crushing it. We were lucky enough to sit at the chef's counter, which I highly recommend if you can swing it. Watching chefs River, Ryan, and Trae work was like witnessing a perfectly choreographed performance. After each course, every surface was meticulously cleaned--counters wiped, stoves reset--everything returned to pristine condition before the next dish began. It was as impressive as the food itself. And it doesn't stop there. You notice Cody in the back, carefully polishing each glass and plate to perfection. Every single person on the team is fully invested in making this an extraordinary experience--and that's exactly what it is. What really sets this place apart is the attention to detail and the personal touches. Maybe you get an extra bite, a meaningful story from Mary Kate, or a surprise dessert to celebrate something special. There's an element of the unexpected that makes the evening feel uniquely yours. We left completely blown away. Not just by the food, but by the people. Kelleanne and Ryan are the kind of individuals you genuinely enjoy watching succeed--they bring something special to the entire experience. And a quick note for those who notice the details (like I do): even the bathroom is stunning--beautifully designed and just as intentional as everything else in the space. If I could give this experience 10 stars I would. I wanted to treat myself to a nice dining experience for my 33rd birthday and I'm SO glad I decided to come here. The last tasting menu experience I had was at a 1 Michelin star in Italy so I tried not to keep my hopes too high but I was excited. Before you show up, you get several texts and then a phone call to ask if you prefer still or sparkling water which I've never been asked prior. I was greeted by a lovely hostess at the front door to check in and get walked to my seat at the chef's counter. I was sitting in between 2 people and to my surprise the lady next to me was the owner's sister. The place is so cute, low lighting and the decor was chic and sexy. The bathrooms are some of the coolest and nicest I've ever been in. (make sure you try both ) There's a card with my name on it and inside you find the menu which I thought was super personable and cute. Before they started service, the owners Kelleanne and Ryan came out with their team and just shared some words and then the Sommelier poured our first glass of champagne Each chef took turns before each course talking about the dish and the intention behind it as well as the somm for each wine poured. I cannot begin to describe how intuitive the service was, seamless and utter perfection. The attention to detail was impressive. In between courses you see the ENTIRE team working together in the back - polishing glassware and silverware, garnishing, dropping off dishes and all working together. Getting to see the owners assist in all of that was humbling to see that they were not above doing the tedious work and that they lead by example. Each course was perfect and paired with delicious selections of wine. I didn't think I would get full from this dinner because they were small tasting portions but man by course 6 I was getting close. First of all, I've never had a popover and holy cow it was delicious! She even packed a handful for me Togo as an extra bday touch! So thoughtful! The BEST thing ever was the slices of buttery, melt in your mouth first time ever served there - Japanese A5 Wagyu. At the end they brought out these mini cupcakes with candles for all the guests celebrating all things including me. They really know how to make you feel special. We also all got to leave with their special chocolate covered Oreos made by grandma which was a nice touch. They really know how to create a memorable experience and they made you feel like family. A plus was the bomb playlist that Kelleanne played during dinner. I thorough enjoyed myself and this in fact took first over my Michelin experience in Italy. Wow! I was lucky enough to have an amazing dining experience at Honeysuckle Rose last night. From start to finish, the food was top tier. I cannot say enough good things about the flavor profiles, the presentation, and the flow of the meal. Everything was spot on. I did the non-alcoholic beverage pairing and it was far better than most NA pairings I've had. I have a lot of Michelin starred meals under my belt, including two 2 Star experiences in the last month, and I can safely say that what I experienced here was easily on par in every aspect. Kelleanne and her team were amazing in food prep and service. And it was so great to see her appreciation for the team as the night concluded. From the call from James earlier in the week to establish preferences within our dietary restrictions to the last bit of dessert on the plate, this was a flawless experience. The space is cozy and feels both private and like you're dining in a friend's home. Each plate was exceptionally prepared with layers of flavors that brought out the elements of the dish - a true expression of local and in-season foods turned into exquisite cuisine. The menus at each place setting were a delightful keepsake and allowed us to both anticipate and follow along. I'm vegan and my husband is pescatarian and we left very pleased with the experience. If you choose the dinner paired with wine, book a rideshare as it's eight pours of wine (plus top offs) with your meal, so we were very very giggly and happy at the night's end. Every bite melts in your mouth and is just such bursts of flavors it's like a delicious firecracker in your mouth if that makes any sense. I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Chefs Table for the 8-course tasting menu at Honeysuckle Rose and it was truly a culinary delight. From start to finish, each dish was thoughtfully crafted and beautifully presented, showcasing the chef's creativity and expertise. The tasting menu began with a refreshing Caviar & Potatoes paired with Moët & Chandon that awakened the palate and set the tone for the meal ahead. Each subsequent course brought new flavors and textures to the chef's table, surprising and delighting my taste buds with every bite. Standout dishes included the braised white rabbit with Cavatappi in Marsala sauce; Braised Wagyu Short Rib, mashed potatoes, squash, Brussel sprouts, carrots with heavenly gravy and truffle (I would have drank the gravy if I was home); Anderson Ranch Lamb Chop with red curry that melted in my mouth tasted very rich and robust and the pastry's were out of this world the panna cotta was so rich and silky that provided the perfect sweet ending to the meal. The service was impeccable, with attentive staff members guiding us through each course and providing insightful explanations of the ingredients and techniques used in each dish. Imagine for a moment you were invited along with 28 others to the home of a master chef and a master sommelier. They prepared a 2.5 hour meal with eight exquisite courses, equally amazing wines and delivered hospitality like you were members of their family. Well, that's what it felt like to dine at Honeysuckle Rose (HR) last night. Having dined at Southbound this summer (see my Yelp review), we started following it on Instagram. It was there that we learned about the opening of HR. HR is usually open Wednesday thru Saturday with one seating the first two nights and two on Friday and Saturday. But this week they added Tuesday to the lineup. When we arrived at 10 minutes to 7, we were the last party to be seated. At each placesetting was an envelope with each diner's name and inside was the menu and wine pairings. What stood out in those first 10-15 minutes was the warm welcome from Andrew and Shawn and the delivery of a glass of bubbly. As each course is presented, the chef explains to the entire dining room the preparation of the dish and then the sommelier discusses the wine's geography and why it was selected. It's amazing how eight small tastings can be so satisfying and filling. We started with fish and lobster and then transitioned to duck, lamb and wagyu. I've often said what makes an incredible dining experience is more than great food, it's the service and connection you have with the wait staff. This is where HR is exemplary. Their level of service would wow someone in Napa or New York City. The cost is $250 per person, which includes everything, except tax. For foodies, this is a steal for the wow they deliver. We are still talking about how incredible the evening was this morning as we munched on a pastry treat they provided for breakfast. I learned that Free Reign Restaurants, the parent firm of HR and Southbound, is opening another Charleston restaurant in the next several months called Allora. Incredible evening! Honeysuckle Rose gives a unique twist on the traditional and somewhat stuffy chef's tasting menu experience. Once you enter, you'll notice that the walls and ceilings are dark and the window shades are closed. This was intentionally done so you'll be less distracted by your surroundings and more able to focus on the dishes being served. You'll also notice that there is fun, upbeat music playing, which definitely sets the mood for the great time that awaits. Shortly after being seated, the owners/ operators Ryan and Kelleanne Jones introduce themselves along with the sommelier. During the short intro, they explain the setting and give a brief description of what's to come. The most important part of that intro is the emphasis on them wanting you to feel like you're at a family dinner. They want you to feel loved and have fun. They even encourage dancing and singing. Once the food and wine comes out, it's not hard to notice that a lot of thought and love went into their selections, preparation, and presentation. Honeysuckle Rose is a very unique gem and regardless how many reviews you read, the love, appreciation, and amazing food/ wine is something that really can't be put into words. I saw this experience all over Charleston social media and for me this would be a costly adventure but I so wanted to do it. So I was so happy when they offered a petite experience. Though still $150 I was able to justify it with a recent job promotion. And I can not say enough good things about our night. The way they call you a few days ahead to double check on allergies and personalize the place setting made you feel so special. The ambiance and vibe was cozy and trendy at the same time. And the food it was soooo good!!! With little details like the menu in an envelope and a small treat to take home and they didn't skimp on the quality of what they served. I did the tasting menu on chefs counter and it was amazing! Arrival and Atmosphere: We were seated promptly at 5:45 PM for our 6 PM reservation, and from the moment we arrived, the warm and inviting atmosphere was evident. The music was fantastic and added a delightful, unexpected touch to the evening. Beverage Pairings: The beverage pairings, expertly curated by Shane, were nothing short of spectacular. The mix of wine and non-alcoholic options was a treat, allowing for a diverse tasting experience. Courses and Pairings: 1. This was my first time doing an expensive 8 course meal paired with wine. I LOVE the cozy feel of the space. It was such an amazing unique experience. The entire restaurant was served at the same time. Every time the server came out with the chef and they spoke about the wine that was being paired with the food. The chef went over what was in the food, and the best part- one of the friends we were with doesn't drink and they brought out a specialty drink every meal for him. My other friend has a pepper allergy and they made sure every meal had nothing in it that can make her have a reaction, to a point where they even recreated parts of the meal for her to fit her needs. Continuing a Birthday month-long celebration of events and experiences, let me take you guys through my experience at Honeysuckle Rose. This was truly an amazing experience! All of the courses and wine pairings were well thought out. It's amazing to see all the new food experiences that have come to Charleston. Honeysuckle Rose has a mouthwatering 8-course meal that takes you on a culinary journey. Each course is carefully prepared and the details are never skipped. The staff even give details and explanations on each dish so it really bolsters that high-class experience they're aiming for. The eight plates were: *Caviar and potatoes- a Small but mighty bite. *Strawberries and rhubarb- the blue cheese in this dish paired so well in every bite. , *Signature popover- I had a few and wanted more. The warm bread paired with the butter was heaven-sent. *Asparagus and morels- delicious and fresh. *Bank scallops- this fresh bite tasted like the sea and was magical. *Lubina Del Mar-the fish was cooked to perfection and the sweetness on top was superb. *Milk-fed veal- this was a succulent piece and I wanted more. *Wagyu New York strip- this dish was a 10/10 and the jus on this dish was rich and savory. *Strawberry guava soufflé- I'm a fan girl of Chef Heather so I was excited to see what new innovations she has created here. The dish was everything and MORE! I loved every offering but my favorite bite had to be the Wagyu New York strip. Absolutely delectable and luscious, deep flavor. As a passionate foodie from LA who eagerly travels for meals, and with a couple dozen Michelin-starred meals under my belt, I had great expectations of Honeysuckle Rose based on the price point, the requirement of a prepaid booking on Tock, and the reviews waxing poetic about the experience. I had misgivings when we entered a restaurant built to accommodate maybe 20 but with 30+ seats packed in, worsened when the chefs described their foods as containing far too many elements and seriously mismatched ingredient lists, anticipating I'd be facing a horrendously confused palate. This is a strong warning to passionate foodies: the food is unbelievably bad, demonstrating the gross ineptitude of the too-young and terribly inexperienced "chefs". One particular dish stole my appetite: it was supposed to be pasta with escargot and a popover with bacon jam. ("Skye", one of the chefs, introduced the dish by saying she hates bacon, but her fellow chef "River" insists people like it, so...?) I had requested a gluten-free option for this dish; my popover tasted like moist cardboard, and my "pasta" was missing escargot...and was made of nearly-raw and crunchy potato ribbons. When I asked the server to remove my dish because the potato "pasta" was uncooked, she returned two minutes later with a message from the chefs: they HAD to be prepared that way, because if they had been cooked, they'd have become mashed potatoes. OBVIOUSLY; I was simply bewildered by their choice to substitute raw potato for pasta instead of using literally anything else that could actually be cooked. Moving on, we were then served scallop-crusted halibut. You read that right: they thinly sliced scallops and laid them atop hunks of halibut, searing the whole thing scallop-down, placed in a puddle of "bread sauce" with (wasted) caviar stirred in. It was served with red wine. Why? Because the sommelier is the former spirits director at another establishment...not a sommelier. Add to that when I commented on the color of one particular wine, he confessed he's colorblind. At one point I excused myself to the restroom to discover its decor consisted of dozens of framed topless playboy pinups...one of which was just the staring eyes of a centerfold framed and set on the back of the toilet tank, ostensibly to watch the patrons use the facilities. Beside the toilet was a nightstand featuring an open jewelry box displaying available Tampax tampons for those in need. I returned to the table and told my husband I was on the verge of walking out, just as our lamb course (that, yes, followed a beef course) arrived at our table. I took a bite of the lamb; it was fine, but utterly unspecial. It was accompanied by a chunk of lamb sausage, which I also sampled. The casing was so tough that I had to pry out a piece of sausage, which left the casing lying on my plate partially attached to the sausage and resembling a used condom. (Fitting with the bathroom display.) The sausage itself was so heavily spiced it was inedible. I stood up, told a server we urgently needed to leave, and we made our escape. The meal was a depressing and painful disaster for anyone who truly loves exceptional food and real fine dining. If, like me, you're willing to spend a small fortune for a great meal with your sweetheart and prefer peaceful places with elegant ambiance and deeply experienced, professional staff...AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE. Two stars for their effort. But this was amateur hour with inexperienced chefs mimicking fine dining and failing miserably. You've been warned. read more

Such an absolutely delightful experience! We've eaten at some pretty incredible restaurants in the US and Europe, but this was our favorite dining experience so far. Honeysuckle Rose balances complex and fresh flavor combinations with a candid ambiance, and great staff. I cannot recommend enough for locals wanting a special experience! We Ubered and waited outside for a couple of minutes chatting with the host before we were escorted inside, directly to our table. The space is definitely packed in, but the chairs are very roomy and we were knocking into anyone. It was a bit difficult to scoot back the chairs to get to the bathroom. Every single course was incredible. It was the perfect amount of food to fill us up. And the wine pairings could not have been better. I'm not a huge wine person and normally get sick of drinking wine by the end of tasting menus, but did not with Honeysuckle Rose's! There were some unique wines that were expertly paired to enhance the flavors of each dish. As they market it, this is a "tailored" experience. Due to a holiday week, it was a bit hard getting ahold of the reservation specialist after I missed her call a few days before our reservation. It all worked out, but be prepared to answer on behalf of your party about still vs sparkling water, if they are left handed, and dietary preferences or allergies. Let me just start by saying what an incredible experience dinner was, and I say experience because that is exactly what it is, an experience in food and family. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect other than 8 courses and a 3 hour dining experience. Every detail had to be meticulously labored over. From the named place cards with your menu for the evening tucked inside sealed by a wax stamp (very nice touch) to the hand crafted mocktails (we went non alcoholic) there was not a single detail left out. Dinner started promptly at 7 and prior to every dish the chef came out of the kitchen and explained what is in the dish, where the ingredients were sourced from, how they were cooked and plated. Followed by the sommelier explaining the wine pairing, the region the grapes were grown in, what to expect while tasting the wine, and why it pairs nicely with the dish. Honeysuckle rose also catered to my food allergy and substituted my dish with something exceptional while my wife had what was initially planned (the quail). We have been to other multi course restaurants only to feel rushed so they could get another table opened. With Honeysuckle Rose everything is timed, we all get our plates at the same time, and the experience finishes at the same time. The evening closed out with the staff talking about how grateful they are of eachother and for all of their guests. This is a very quaint place, seating only about 20 people and it is only 1 service per night. The setting is very intimate and the music choice playing in the background was given much thought, very tasteful and appropriate. This is also a prepurchase meal and gratuity is included, I offered additional gratuity and was politely refused. There was not a single plate of food or drink that we did not thoroughly enjoy. Quite honestly the $500 price tag on this dinner was an easy price to pay for all you get. We got the chef's experience (seating at the bar top overlooking the kitchen). We were able to interact with chef River And chef Sky. I would strongly suggest getting the chef's experience, it's the same price wether sitting in the dining room or at the bar area (only 4seats). If you're looking for an exceptional dining experience, where every detail has been meticulously dialed in, and the food is second to none I would suggest honeysuckle rose. The venue is small, but that makes the whole experience so much better. It does feel like such a special occasion. The food was absolutely amazing...the tomatoes with the tuna tartar I will always dream about always. It reminded me of fresh tomatoes off the vine I knew as a child. I have tried to grow them myself, but have never recreated my childhood taste, it was amazing... I had that taste again. read more

This is it! This is the single best dining experience in Charleston that is like no other. It is a small dining room that seats maybe up to 25 or 30 people who all dine at the same time. First off, you pay at the time of your reservation, and the price includes all tips as well as the meal. You are given the opportunity to list your allergies and other dining preferences. A few days prior to the reservation, they call to confirm your reservation, preferences, including still v sparkling water, etc. You start outside and they seat each party separately, so be sure to arrive 15 minutes before your reservation. Inside, it is dark, but not dreary. The art and the music are not what you expect in a fine dining establishment, but it lightens the mood just right! At your table, is a personalized menu for the evening. It lists all 9 courses and the wine that is paired with that course. The food - words cannot even express the ways that they have managed to create flavor combinations that you would never think of working together, but are so delicious! Wine is not spared, feel free to ask the beverage director to top you off if you would like! Prior to each course being served, the chef introduces the dish and the beverage director explains the wine. Then everyone in the room is served the course. This is kind of a bummer to have to share but I felt it was necessary for anyone considering buying a gift certificate for friends and family. My fiance and I have been here 4 times, the first time within their first year of being open was wonderful. Service was great, food was awesome, wine was perfect. The next two times were about 1-2 years ago and they were also very pleasant. The last time we went was with a group of 10. It was REALLY hard to get anyone to answer emails, texts, or phone calls to schedule this. I finally got a text confirmation but it didn't have the time of the reservation so we were all an hour early and there is no where to wait. When we were seated, our table was basically on top of another large group so it was hard to even get into our seats without knocking over a wine glass or two. In fact, that larger party successfully shattered a wine glass holding red wine later that night. The chef this time around was new to his role; I remember him from previous visits but he was not the head chef those times. Perhaps this is why the food was disappointing. They seem to claim to make a big effort to cater to each guest and we had a couple who did not like shellfish or raw meats but the first course was an oyster and she was delivered this. There was a course with raw tuna pinwheeled with cucumber or something and so that course for her was just cucumber. I think if you claim to make an effort to make the experience great for all, then simply omitting the offending ingredient or allergy from the dish, especially when it is the main component, is inadequate. One of the larger courses was duck I believe. Each person's slice seemed to be at a different temperate. Mine was so overdone I could not eat it. As most people know, Michelin stars are giving to not only great restaurants but consistently great restaurants. Honeysuckle Rose will never qualify. Based on this last experience, I was reluctant to try the restaurant again. Now to the gift card issue. About 6mo ago my fiance gifted me their Gold experience. He had a really hard time getting a hold of them and confirming the gift and then actually getting the physical gift card so it arrived late for my birthday. Which is fine with me, it's the thought that counts. However, I have found it impossible to actually use this gift. When you make a reservation online, you pre-pay for the seating, which is very normal for a tasting menu but if you have a giftcard, there is no way to do that online so you have to contact an actual person. This is where things get tricky. I first started asking to use the giftcard in October and sent about 5 emails and never got a response. I happened to be in their sister restaurant and recognized one of the honeysuckle rose employees there and inquired what the best way to get ahold of someone would be. He told me to text or call Ellie their reservation specialist directly. So sent a few texts her way over the course of a week and finally got a response. I was told I could definitely use the giftcard on the day I wanted which was about 4months from then. Since the reservations weren't open yet, she asked me to get back to her in about 6 weeks when they would be open and that she would save the text. As instructed, I reached back out at the specified time point, have sent a few follow up texts over the course of a week, again with zero response. When I look at that desired date now on Resy, the day appears fulled booked so I guess asking 4 months in advance is inadequate to secure an important date. We were already really disappointed by our last visit and this lack of responsiveness is the nail on the coffin. I'll probably never hear from them again but would love to just get a refund for my fiance instead of trying to track these unprofessional employees down. Such a bummer. Hands down the best dining experience I've had. The owners created an 8 course tasting menu paired with curated wines. Every step of the experience exceeded our expectations. From the welcome and escort to the "Chef's Counter" (best seat in the house)! To the explanations of the wine and food prior to each course you were made to feel like a part of their family. The owners and all the staff took the time to chat with us and all diners. The small dining room(seats only 32) felt a bit crowded at first, but quickly transformed to an intimate dining room. It seemed like each course outdid the prior course. The wines were all amazing by themselves, from the Moet to begin the night, to the final desert wine. Giardino Pantesco. It was like nothing I've ever tasted! I imagine that if I came back next week there would be a completely different menu with flavor combinations that can only come from the minds of the best Chefs around. I made this reservation once I heard their goal was a Michelin star. I'm glad I did. At $250/person it may be one of the most expensive meals for many, but well worth the 3 hour commitment. I was only permitted 10 pics, so the boxed ginger cookie pastry cream sandwich that they give to all guests as a special treat for the next morning. Incredible! This was more of an experience than a meal. It was great. 8 courses with wine pairings. Each course and pairing introduced by the chef for that course and wine pairer. Many of the wines were first issue to Honeysuckle Rose, which I think means they're the first to serve those wines. Many of the ingredients were specially sourced from niche providers and all the courses were fantastic. They called to check for any dietary restrictions - shellfish for our party, and the menu for the whole restaurant didn't include any shellfish, so it wasn't just a special menu for our table. The courses included caviar, lamb, wagyu, multiple kinds of fish and more. So so good. read more
