    Curry Beef Brisket Clay Pot
    Maurine S.

Had not been here in years and needed a spot to go for a quick bite. We ordered seafood chow mein, beef tripe and curry beef brisket in a clay pot. The ambience was very hole in the wall but the waitress was nice. The food was mostly just regular. The seafood chow mein hong kong style was soggy and the seafood lacked flavor. 3/5 The tripe was just tripe and the flavors were subtle 4/5. The curry beef brisket was the best dish, 4/5. The flavors were melded well with just enough of a hint of curry to not be overpowering. Initially I was unhappy with the cut of beef but realized that it was exactly as described. Brisket instead of beef stew. Lol. It would have rocked if it was beef stew but to each their own. Would I come back? Only if it was a late night and not much else was open.

New sign for Fat Wong's. It's now Garden Kitchen.

Closed for good! I tried to visit about 2 weeks ago and I missed the lunch time. So sad. I've eaten here for years and had so many good memories.

This place had been struggling for a while since the original owner decided to retire and his son took over. The menu had been reduced and the place was empty and for food quality had diminished. I drove by last week and noticed they were closed and a new restaurant was there.

    Barbecue Combination Over Rice ($14.95)

It's honestly been forever since I've last been to Fat Wong's Kitchen because with the previous ownership I felt like the quality was on a decline and my family and I slowly visited less and less. With a new owner I decided to give it a shot. My expectations were not that high because I always viewed Fat Wong's as the most average Cantonese restaurant which might be a bit harsh, but honestly in my most recent visit it was way better than I expected. My dad got the Fook Yin Fried Rice ($15.95) and I had to refrain from scooping too much of it on my plate because it was one of the best Fook Yin Fried Rices I have in a long time. I'm usually not even that big of a fan of this type of dish because I don't like my fried rice to be moist, but it really has that Wok Hei to it. Definitely recommend it. I also got the Barbecue Combination Over Rice ($14.95) with the Roasted Duck and BBQ Pork. Definitely skip the duck, it is not the best quality or flavorful. Plus it is lacking some moisture. That BBQ pork though is pretty good and tasty while also having some tenderness to it. The broccoli has no seasoning and is just cooked as is, but at least you get your veggies in at least. Overall honestly not bad at all. I think the new ownership is a step up. The interior isn't that much different other than the walls being painted, but it is comfortable enough. Parking isn't too difficult and there is plenty of street parking. I'd say it's worth coming back here in the future.

We were craving for Cantonese food when we were in the Bay Area 2 weeks ago. We found Fat Wong's Kitchen in San Bruno so decided to try it out. It was almost our last day of our trip. We ordered stir fry beef rice noodle (beef chow fun), pork and preserved egg porridge, shrimp wonton noodle soup, roasted duck noodle soup and iced red bean drink. The beef chow fun was authentic and delicious. Beef was a bit dry but the chow fun (noodle) were flavorful and not too greasy. They were known for the porridge because their restaurant name in chinese means "great porridge forever" (they play on words for beauty forever). Their pork and preserved egg porridge was also very tasty and the texture was just right. It had many preserved egg inside which I like. Shrimp wonton was mediocre because I had higher expectation on that. I'm wonton fan but their wonton tasted like dumplings and it wasn't flavorful. The soup base was also mediocre. Roasted duck noodle was very delicious as we were told that just added $2 for the thigh meat. If not, the chef will pick it randomly and may not have much meat. They gave us a lot of duck meat so it was worth to pay extra $2. Iced red bean drink was not bad but I've had better. Anyhow, we like the beef chow fun, the porridge and the roasted duck noodle. I recommended these 3 items. It was a satisfying meal indeed.

My wife liked their name in Chinese. I liked their name in English in English. Both their name and their Yelp reviews convinced me that Fat Wong's was worthy of trying. They are located on a busy street in San Bruno, not far from the many Chinese places in Millbrae in what looks like it used to be a drive through fast food restaurant. I went there for takeout 3 times in week during a recent business trip; so much that a few of the employees starting recognizing me. We ordered their wonton noodles, dumplings, beef stew and beef tripe. Everything was good. The wontons were large and full of pork and shrimp. My wife liked the dumplings. The noodles that came with our orders were nice and al dente. Both the beef stew and tripe was tender and full of flavor. We liked this place. We liked the price. We will be back when I travel up there for work again.

A spot for cheap delicious Chinese food. The service is good if you like to be left alone. You order, receive, and if you need you need to ask. I really enjoyed the brisket curry, and the pork cutlet was better than any I tried before from any Japanese restaurant. You are able to see the kitchen cook your food from your table and you can see outside to the Main Street of San Bruno which is a plus for me. I enjoyed this place and if you're looking for a Chinese food fix, this might be for you.

Lucked out! Their dining room has reopened for service. Was driving by and decided to stop in and check. During covid they were pick-up and delivery only. Looks a little emptier than usual maybe people don't know they back to having dine-in. Did not have to wait for seating. Fulfilled our hankering for chow fun. Ordered regular beef chow fun (gon chow ngau ho) and the saucy gravy beef chow fun (sup chow ngau ho). Both tasted great with good wok hay. Iced grass jelly (Leung fun bing) drinks to go with our meal. The son apparently runs the place now, everything is pretty much the same. Same old tables and same old decor but now they accept credit cards.

First time back since Covid. Was unsure of quality since several Yelpers posted quality went down hill during Covid. Ordered classic Cantonese dish - (roast duck noodles soup ) as a test. Happy to report it's a 5/5! The noodles were bouncy, just like in HK. The roast duck was perfect- crisp with just the right amount of seasoning. Not greasy at all. The broth just right, not overly salty like many places. Kitchen staff all speak ( and swear in) Cantonese , - a great sign Cantonese food cooked by Cantonese people. So glad to have this rare Cantonese gem in the Peninsula. Will be back! 2/7/25 Update: was in the mood for curry brisket so went back yesterday got that. The brisket they use is the same as the one they use for the sliced brisket in clear broth - so more tender than the traditions ngau nam and with no chewy grisly parts. It's a milder curry, no heat at all . I opted for the curry beef brisket clay pot rather than over rice ( to have enough leftovers). It came with about 7 or 8 generous slices of brisket, some wok fried yellow onions and sweet red pepper. Wish it had some potatoes. I give the curry brisket 4.5/5. Will be a 5 if curry has a bit more kick and with some potatoes.

Was sad to hear that they were going to close down a few months ago, but relieved to learn it was actually a change of ownership. Haven't had Fat Wong's for a while because they were only doing take out during the pandemic. Visited yesterday and all I have to say is, this place is a huge work in progress. I want them to succeed but they have a few things to work on. Ordered the Beef Brisket Noodle Soup, Beef Brisket Rice Noodle Soup, and Sautéed Beef with String Beans. Areas of improvement: 1- Poor business practice. Please let your customer know if there is an up charge for rice noodle. Got hit with a $1 charge but was never informed nor was it stated on the menu. 2- Quality and/or cooking method of beef brisket is lacking. I believe this is their signature dish. No longer the same as before. 3- Soup has no taste. Very disappointing. However, the guy server (non-Asian?) was great. The place did not give me dirty vibes even though there was a random piece of rice on our table right when we sat down. The sautéed beef with string bean was very flavorful. Enjoyed that a lot. Though it's not the greatest and not cheap, would still come back if I am in need of Asian comfort food during this cold winter season.

Authentic Cantonese noodle shops are pretty rare even in Bay Area so I was happy to finally try Fat Wong's. The service was prompt and dare I say pleasant. The restaurant is not that big and it was pack full of customers and a few regulars from the interactions I observed. We ordered the tossed noodles with braised beef brisket (recommended), braised fish ball/pork skin/turnip (recommended), shrimp dumplings, and beef chow fun. All were pretty good and satisfying but the beef brisket is recommend. I'd go back there again to try other dishes.

All of the food was what you expected from a typical chinese dim sum restaurant and we were very pleased. The biggest takeaway is from a short interaction I had with the hostesses (the women wearing the black jackets at the front of the restaurant). When one of the waitresses accidently knocked over the soy sauce on the table and onto the my pants, she was very apologetic. I understand as we are all human and mistakes happen. The manager came by and provided us napkins/wet tissues as well as being apologetic. I was able to go to the bathroom and wash/dry off the stain in 5 minutes. It was not a big deal at all to me and I went back to our table. When the hostess came by and said she was sorry, she also mentioned to sit on the inside of the table next time. I didn't want to counter as my mother was present as well as all the other staff were very cordial. However, when you make a statement like that and to imply that I had anything to do with the sauce getting on my clothes, it just takes turns all of these apologies into a hollow statement. Even though it was a bad interaction from one individual, it left a very sour impression on myself and I would rather go to other restaurants than repeatly go here again.

Our table of 6 ordered a variety of dishes and everything was delicious. the most notable items for me were the spicy wontons and fish in chili oil. The dishes were spicy but not so much so that you couldn't enjoy the actual flavors of the dish. For those that like the Szechuan tingling feeling, the chicken in explosive chilis was also quite good. We had also given the string beans, green onion pancake, and pork and shrimp dumplings a shot and all of them hit the spot. I'm usually a huge fan of braised beef noodle soup so decided to get that here too. It wasn't the same as if I had gotten this dish at a Taiwanese restaurant; compared to the strong flavors of the other dishes, this one was pretty mild. So it's something I would skip next time I come, but every other dish was on point. Our waitress was also great at taking care of us, bring out our food quickly and helping us to clear the other plates. Even after we finished our meal and overstayed our welcome by continuing to chat, the staff didn't make us feel rushed to leave.
