Cafe Orchid gets the Jeff H. best wonton noodles $13.95 in Millbrae award. Even before they close, their wonton noodles still hits the spot. It is a light meal and does the job. Noodles are OK but the star of the show is the wontons. There are six plump, good sized, filled with shrimp & pork, well balanced wontons in the bowl. Cafe Orchid did a good with their interpretation of the Hong Kong wonton noodles. It is close to the ones you get in HK. By the way, the ice milk tea $4.55 is also good. read more

Used to be my favorite hk style steak place but they no longer serve it on a hotplate which to me is a faux pas. Steak was overcooked on one side and undercooked on the other which was disappointing since it feels like the steak wasnt properly defrosted before cooking. Cafe Orchid is a HK style cafe located in a pretty nice area in Millbrae. It was super busy when we went, but it's a fairly cramped space! You're sitting almost shoulder to shoulder with other patrons, with just a small gap between tables. They have an extensive menu, and specials for each day. I ended up getting beef stir fried instant noodles and a milk tea. The milk tea was tasty, but the noodles were too salty for my taste. I ordered a baked pork chop over spaghetti and cream sauce but it took forever for the order to be complete and when it was complete, my order was totally wrong. There were lots of reviews and photos of the stewed oxtail and i was really looking forward to it but when it came out there were hardly any pieces of meat which was disappointing especially because it's one of the more expensive items on their menu. Cafe Orchid has been a part of Millbrae for as long as I can remember and I decided out of the blue to try it out again. It's definitely a HK style restaurant that has had it's fair share of struggles during the pandemic, but seems to be doing well as of late as I see locals often visiting. Parking is definitely difficult and the entrance to the small parking lot behind the restaurant is a bit poorly designed. It is also easy to miss since there is only one lane in and out of it. I thought the service was pretty good despite what others have said. It depends on your experience, but I've had no issues with it so far. They definitely encourage you to use cash rather than card for payment. I recently ordered the Baked Pork Chop with Rice ($13.95). It won't blow your mind, but it was good and hit the spot. Coming into a cafe like this that was definitely my expectation. I like how the edges of the pork had a bit of a crisp and it was tender all around. The sauce had a pretty nostalgic taste to the other tomato sauces that I had growing up eating HK style food. You will also be dissapointed if you are expecting this to be some gourmet tomato sauce because that isn't really the norm for HK style baked pork chops. So tone down the pretentiousness a bit! It's still some good food. They also give a ton of rice and this dish definitely fills you up. The only downside is the location, but otherwise this is a solid spot for Hong Kong style comfort food especially for Millbrae. read more

The Hong Kong milk tea lacked sugar, and when we asked for sugar, they said they didn't have any. So it was straight up strong. The porkchop rice was small, with lower quality porkchop meat. The sauce, my friends said, reminded them of spaghetti O's. That wasn't a compliment. Basically, it tasted cheap. The Hong Kong tea mixed with coffee had sugar and was strong. My friend said the spaghetti was horrible. Like cheap dollar store spaghetti noodles. Slippery and gummy. The rest of us had rice. They were stingy with the rice, too. The Hong Kong milk tea hit the spot, a tad bit too much condensed milk but didn't mind it. The beef stew noodle soup with wonton was a great choice for the stormy weather today. Wonton pieces were big, beef was tender, overall a hearty dish. The chicken wings were a little disappointing. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely the Hong Kong style chicken wings you but presentation was not the best. It definitely looked like they just tossed left over fries from someone else's order onto the plate. I felt like the baked porkchop spaghetti was okay, I've had better but it got the job done. I was referred to 蘭苑 Cafe Orchid by my sister. She was referred by her friend who lives in Los Angeles and frequently visiting Millbrae. Wow. This place is famous. I have been dying to try this at a restaurant in Houston that always ran out. It's not a good idea to try everything within reach. We both ordered milk teas: Hong Kong style 香港奶茶 milk tea and 鸳鸯茶 tea & coffee. They used condensed milk to sweeten and silly me, I forgot to stir. Besides 烩猪扒意粉 braised pork chop spaghetti, I ordered "Curry Pizza" (hahaha that's roti canai with curry sauce). It was so greasy and tasted like scallion pancake without scallions. The curry sauce was very tasty and mildly spicy. My sister ordered her usual 海南鸡饭 Hainan Chicken. I actually liked it from this restaurant. The meat was really tender and sauce was tastier than other restaurants in south bay. We both love soups. I ordered 羅宋湯 Russian Borscht and her chicken dish comes with soup of the day already. My soup tasted sweeter than I expected and kind of water down minestrone. I'll skip this next time. I read a few reviews screaming about CASH ONLY. Right, I don't see credit card symbol on the menu nor on the window. However, there is credit card sticker on the next door massage parlor, which happens to be so close to the door when opened.
